Poké has been an insane hype. Maybe it's because of the hype that I ended up feeling pretty disappointed by it. I came in on a Thursday night at 8pm and people had started clearing up. The menu selection is very nice; the idea of building your own is fun. However, as some other people have said, I had a guy who was quite rude and talked with his employees before bothering to serve me. He was very standoffish and sounded bored while serving me, but was quite happy to chit chat with his coworkers. Also, while he was scooping the tuna, he paused for one second and put some pieces back!!! I can't blame him; that's probably regulation, but I don't think you should let a customer see you're giving them less...so I'm docking -1 star for service. ...especially when the final price comes down to close to $14! Yes, it's very photo worthy, but honestly the taste was just okay. The fish selection is fresh, but it's so little in the bowl while all the other ingredients aren't so expensive to buy. I'd rather buy a chirashi literally anywhere else that sells sushi and get three times as much protein for the same price. The bowl itself is just pretty small and fills you more on carbs than it does on actual food. All in all, just another overpriced trend. Money aside, this is in a hip area of town so of course things will be expensive, but the taste? What taste??? Maybe I should ask for a bigger douse of sauce, but then it's just me eating rice with sauce. The lack of flavor plus the unequal distribution of food just does not work. First time ever trying Pokéworks and will definitely be back. Buddy and I stopped in around 830 on a Saturday night to find there wasn't a seat open. The line moves very quickly. Menu has variety, offering 8 awesome sounding dishes that you can get in either bowl, burrito, or salad form. Food was fresh, flavorful, and staff was very helpful. Moving through the line you notice none of the "toppings" are labeled so don't be shy to ask questions. Overall this chipotle like fast casual restaurant was very good and doesn't come with the food coma like feeling when leaving the infamous Mexican chain. Excited to return. read more

I am lowkey living for this place. I've only been here once because it's so out of my way but if I had a car I would totally come here more often. It's located in a very busy area where lunch and dinner times cause it to really boom. But if you come at a off time, you might skip the rush. It works like this, you tell them what size, then what rice, what meat, then you can get all the toppings in the world (as long as it can fit in that bowl), and sauce. I think this is a great versatile way of eating since there are so many different combinations to what you can have. The fish taste fresh and there are no complaints there. They have complimentary water so if you don't want to pay for a beverage, they do offer those little cups by the soda machine. The service is great, it was my first time there and the worker really explained to me how it works and what I could do with my bowl. read more

I would normally not grade so hard at a restaurant especially when it is so new, but I have to give it 1 STAR so that the management at this restaurant knows that they have some serious flow issues. let me start by saying that - the food is fantastic - the sauces is some of the most flavorful I've had - and all the fish and other protein looks really fresh the reason why this place FRUSTRATES me it's because they have such a high demand and most of the time, it's the bottlenecks at the end of the line that kill the efficiency which end up making the customers wait up to 45 minutes. an example would be my most recent visit, where there seems to be five people manning the floor. the girl that grabbed the rice and protein was super quick. the next guy in line that mixes the sauces was also super quick. then came the toppings which was a huge drag because there is a lot of options and people usually take a little bit longer to decide - which i understand. that isn't the part that bothered me , rather it was the two people standing by the cashier that didn't do anything to help (couldve been floating between stations). because the topping guy was swamped, there was nothing to ring up anyways. instead of helping, I saw two people just standing by the cashier. I ordered a large bowl through yelp. Because there's already $3.99 delivery charge, I only selected 10% tips through the App. The food arrived one hour and half later. The driver called me to go out to pick and asked me, "Miss, did you order the food? What's wrong? I drove 7 miles for a dollar or so tips. What's wrong with you?" I paid $20 to get $14 food delivered. I may not know the rules here clearly enough and didn't check distance, but I don't order just to get insulted like this. This is the worst experience I had with food delivery. The manager reached out and apologize for it. Sounds like it's a third party delivery service through yelp, and they will investigate that. I'm loving the poke trend in Cambridge and Somerville. There are a few spots (Manoa, Poke City, and Poke Works) that have popped up recently, but Poke Works is conveniently in Davis Square. The food is great and a nice break from some of the other take out spots. I'm a huge fan of Mexican food but every once in a while it's nice to take a break. Poke Works is a good way to break it up, but expect to wait. I've been here a few times and each time there's been a line. My three star review is mostly because the line could be managed more effectively with one additional person on the line and a better flow. I'm not sure if it's because of turnover or the team here is still getting used to it, but if you're parking - pay a little extra because you're going to be waiting. I just had to extend my time after twenty minutes and I'm still unattended. If you have 30 minutes to wait for "fast food" then check this place out. Otherwise, try out one of the others I mentioned above. ***UPDATE*** The owner was kind enough to reach out about my review. He explained they're working to improve the flow and hopes I'll return. It was OK. I love sushi, I love sashimi, but there was just something about seeing my tuna scooped out of a vat and into a large burrito that I found to be off putting. So the appetite appeal is not there when it comes to store layout. Additionally I found the tuna to be a bit fibrous. Not sushi grade The menu however is quite inventive. I was super excited about this place once I saw that they had sushi burritos!! I think it's better in theory than execution because it was quite a messy "burrito" and a bit too squishy. The next time I came, I ordered a poke bowl which I enjoyed much more. The quality of the salmon was pretty good. I was really disappointed in the quality of the tuna. I could only eat about half of it because it contained so much connective tissue, so for the price, it really wasn't worth it. The service is terrible. Both times I encountered rude service. I do enjoy the food here at pokeworks, but the last few times I have ordered for delivery my order has been incorrect. Tonight I made it simple and ordered 2 of exactly the same bowl. Large Hawaiian classic brown rice heavy sauce, seaweed salad, sesame seeds, masago, green onion and wonton crisps. When they arrived one looked like ahi tuna and the other albacore tuna, one did not have any sauce on it, no masago and no wontons. We called the restaurant and the young lady on the phone told me the order was correct and she watched them make it. This is not ok with me and terrible customer service. There are only a few tables that can seat around ~20 people, so we walked back to our apartment to eat it. If the line is long (it will be), an employee will give you a menu so you can make your decision beforehand, which is very nice and efficient. Service was wonderful and very friendly. Way friendlier than I would be at hour 4 of scooping raw fish. / HOW TO ORDER: When you get to the station, you'll order either a 'Signature Work' or build from scratch. I'd recommend getting a 'Signature Work' and omitting and adding stuff to it, which they'll do for you. ~ Choose a bowl of burrito -- bowl so you can save your leftovers better because these bowls are huge. You can also get a ... salad. ~ Choose between brown or white rice (or quinoa) - I like brown because it adds a nuttier texture to the dish. ~ Choose fish -- All about that salmon or tuna, baby. They also have tofu and chicken if you don't like raw fish. A regular gets you two scoops of protein, so you can mix (tuna + salmon) and a large gets you 3. ~ Choose mix-ins -- my favorite are: cucumber, seaweed (not slimy at all!) ~ Choose sauce -- you can go classic with salt or shoyu, or crazy like wasabi aioli. The gochujang sauce was quite spicy, so beware. ~ Choose toppings -- MUSTS: green onion, furikake (seaweed/sesame seed mix), wasabi tobiko, and sesame seeds. I was beyond excited when this place opened after having to fill this enormous void every time I'm in NYC so gracias, you're like this sexy fusion of all the yumminess of sushi but in a bowl (or ginormous roll) also, don't do a salad, who are you? The line is usually pretty intense because it's a popular spot so if you're like me and have a tendency to get hangry, mentally prepare and be nice to your friends while you're in line waiting. Maybe chew some gum aggressively or dig out that hard candy that's been in your bag far too long. I tried the pokebowl with salmon and tuna (I asked the husband, WAIT, albacore or ahi? apparently alabacore has more healthy fatty acids, but do you) which was fresh and just firm enough with brown rice and asked for half the rice cause rice is cool but unless you're gluten free and live for rice, it's not that cool. Then I topped that bountiful fish mountain with cucumbers, edamame, hijiki seaweed, cilantro, ponzu and sriracha for that acid and spice, sweet chili gochujang and let it rain avo, sesame seeds, jalapenos and onion and garlic crisps. Tried to order via the app for the first time. I placed the order and went to pick it up at the estimated time. The staff said they didn't get the order and the app was confusing so I placed another order. Checked my credit card and there are now 2 charges. I showed the staff this and they said there is nothing they can do about the duplicate order and I'd have to contact level up. They canceled the second order per my request. I asked her to check again and she found the first order - it was never seen and the order wasn't prepared. I've never had actual poké from Hawaii so I don't know how authentic this restaurant is, but according to my taste buds, I 100% really enjoyed this :) I came here in on the second day of their soft opening. There was a huge line, but it went surprisingly fast. To be honest, I spent most of the waiting time deciding on the different selections that they have anyway. I ended up choosing the Hawaiian Classic bowl. My boyfriend got the Umami sushi burrito. When you get to the counter, you have to tell them the size you want ($10.95 for a regular not bad), the rice you want, and what kind of flavors you want. It's pretty straightforward. I love raw fish, so seeing the platters of raw fish and seafood made me drool. At the end of the counter, they ask if you want crispies (I.e toasted garlic, toasted onion) with extra charge. For beverages, they have a huge variety, but I highly recommend their infused teas. I got the tropical green tea and it was really good/refreshing! I was really happy when I saw that they had additional condiments on the side because I was scared that it might be under seasoned or that it didn't have enough sesame oil. They had soy sauce, sesame oil, and sriracha - how clutch! The bowl itself was amazing - the fish was super fresh and the size of them were perfect. The flavors were great and I could taste all the ingredients that they put into it. With that being said, I really didn't need the extra soy sauce, sesame oil, nor the sriracha. For my bf, he really enjoyed his sushi burrito with sriracha because he loves spicy food. In terms of table space, I would say that they have plenty and some spaces will clear up so you don't need to worry about not finding a spot. Their initial expansion notice came a grueling 6 months ago in the summertime! Since then, I kept close tabs on their social media to pinpoint when exactly they'd open up. Lo and behold, they made an unassuming announcement right after Thanksgiving for an early December opening...THE TIME HAD COME. I popped in the second day of their opening and was welcomed with a line (almost) hitting the door. While the line moved along smoothly, I would rate my overall experience as dismal. No, I haven't been to Hawaii, and I'm far from a Poke connoisseur...but I've had pretty darn memorable Poke in Venice beach and Pokeworks NYC under my belt, and this was just astronomically far from their standards. I get that they've just opened up and have a few things to work out, but WHY DID SAUCEMAN DRENCH MY BOWL IN SAUCE? Because of him, I wasn't able to complete the last half of my bowl that was drowning in "Salt" sauce. My rice was quite literally swimming in a sea of sauce. In addition to sauce man, I was rushed by toppings lady who tried to slide my bowl off to the register without crab salad, seaweed salad, massago, green onion or avocado? Hell no, please uncap my bowl! If you haven't had poke before, this restaurant has the same ordering style as Chipotle. After trying this place two times, I have to say you have to go the build-your-own route. The first time I ate here I had the Hawaiian Classic, one of their signature works and I felt pretty 'meh' about the whole experience. I made the mistake of getting it with brown rice in a last ditch effort to eat healthier, but halfway through I found that I wished I had gotten white rice. Something about all the flavors of the fish and seasonings together probably would have fit better with white rice (more like sushi?). It tasted good, but I wasn't blown away. I decided to give it another go, because it wasn't really the restaurants fault that I had made the terrible decision to get brown rice. This time, I decided to go burrito. And MAN, it makes the world of difference. Once you get over your fear of ordering (flashbacks to ordering Chipotle for the first time), you just tell the staff what you want. The staff is very friendly and helpful, which is great because all the stuff looks the same in the tubs and you can't figure out the difference between one tub of green stuff vs. another tub of green stuff. Or whatever that crunchy stuff is suppose to be in that other tub. What you're left with is this giant sushi roll (basically), filled with your dreams and hopes. And it tastes like victory. I went once on a Tuesday evening, and the second time on a Saturday in the afternoon. There was virtually no line either time I went, but the weather was pretty cold so it probably would be a bit busier as the weather warms up. Seating is a communal set-up, so if you're going in a big group you might not be able to find seating together. Even with 3 people, my group had some trouble finding seating. But as long as you're okay with sitting next to strangers and waiting for a bit, seating moves pretty quickly. read more

Stopped by for lunch and ordered the Hawaiian Classic and Omani Classic. This is not traditional poke, it's more like the fast food Baja Fresh of poke. The fish is mixed and seasoned to order with a few options for toppings and is served over white or brow rice. Two regular sized bowls will run you about $25, a bit over priced for the amount of fish you get - there was way more rice then fish. The tobiko tasted a little strange and the fish was over seasoned to the point where I couldn't finish it. If you're looking for traditional poke I'd steer clear of this place and head up to GoPoke in Chinatown. Way more traditional and large potion sizes. read more

Went for dinner to check this place out. I've had poké before and was interested to see how Pokéworks ...works. First off, the staff were awesome - they were friendly and helpful. My problem with this place was that they didn't have the things I wanted. I ordered the Hawaiian Classic since it was on the menu and it seemed like a good first item to try. No white rice. That's fine, quinoa is better for me anyway. Halfway down the line, no classic sauce. Oh okay, well whatever works best then is good. I kind of understand running out of white rice. The food here is wonderful. Every bite is packed with flavor and tastes fresh. The staff are nice, they have good covid protocols, and the prices are great for the portions you get. The ahi tuna is the stars of this restaurant. The ahi tuna tastes incredibly fresh and works with almost anything you can think of. The barely there rice was hard, nil sauce, had only enough protein for a 2 protein not the 3 protein that we paid for. It was also missing quite a few of items asked for. And it was only 3/4 filled. I've been to the Pokeworks in NYC and really loved it, so as soon as one opened here in Davis square I had to go try and support the restaurant. We went around 2:30p on Sun and there was a line (thankfully not out the doors), but it was moving along. One can expect the line to be slower than other fast food restaurants as customers have the options to customize their orders. Think Bolocco and chipotle but with seafood and Japanese condiments. For the choice of a regular ($10.50 - 2 protein scoops) or large ($13.50 - 3 protein scoops) poke bowl, you could choose to fill your bowl with as many toppings as you would like. Protein options consist of salmon, tuna, shrimp, scallop, tofu, chicken. Other toppings you could add are avocado ($1 extra), seaweed or crab salad, tamago, cucumbers, edamame, dried seaweed, mango, tangerines, garlic crunch, toasted sesame, etc. It would be more efficient if the toppings were labeled. I like to have my sauce on the side so I can regulate the amount I put in the bowl without making it too saucy or underwhelmed. They have different sauces as well - ponzu, sriracha aioli, poke house sauce, etc. I really like the concept but the only thing I didn't like so much was the quality of the fish, which is a big deal. Sushi Burrito! Sushi Abomination! Get the sushi bowl. The sushi burrito doesn't do the ingredients justice because of the concentrated areas of flavor with empty pockets of sadness. As beautiful as it is, the bowl is easier to eat and enjoy the different components of fish, crunchies, sauce, and toppings. It's best to make your own so you can maximize tastiness, although I'm sure you can order one off the board and add to that. I made my own sushi burrito, regular ($11.72 including tax), a scoop of salmon, a scoop of ahi tuna, onions, cukes, masago, shoyu, spicy aioli, onion chips, seasweed salad, furikake, wonton chips, and green onion. My friends went ham on the toppings and one couldn't even get his burrito wrapped almost, but we don't discriminate any sushi burrito. I definitely didn't stuff mine enough with seaweed salad, mango, or avocado, those definitely would have added to the tastiness though. Opening weekend was busy and took us 40 minutes from the door to payment. They ran out of poke classic sauce, sad face, which I'm pretty sure is just unagi sauce. ALAS no options of burrito were giving and by the time I realized I was too abashed to correct them. I finally got to check this place out and I couldn't be happier. I was worried because when you hype things up it sometimes it doesn't live up. Let me tell you it does! Now full disclosure this is the first time. Pokeworks runs as an assembly line similar Chipotle. Making this delish food quick and affordable. I was very excited to come here for the first time - raw fish is my favorite. However, I will not be coming back anymore. My friend experience was great, second - less so, and today's convinced me to stay away. Second time I got a quinoa bowl, the quinoa was undercooked and the tuna looked weathered. Today, the quinoa smelled like dirty socks and tasted similarly. I really enjoy all the toppings and always fill up on them. Today, I noticed the staff was irritated with the fact that I wanted most of the toppings on my bowl. 3/4 staff members that helped me did not say hello or make eye contact (I don't need pampering, but like establishing some basic human rapport with people I encounter).
