Always a 5 Star experience when gathering for drinks here. Over the years, the names have changed for the provider of Polite Provision's delicious orderable food to go along with their polite provisions. Items such as scrupulously prepared meatballs, fried polenta, spaghetti with mushroom sauce, etc., from the prior next-door, connected purveyor "Soda and Swine"...but those days are done ...I digress. And where is Soda and Swine's Yelp page? I know I did a review, but now the page appears gone completely in search? Nah, it's just hidden, presumably to accommodate Fortunate Sons, which opened about a year ago after re-construction of both establishments. I'm too lazy to see if still owned by Consortium Group. I did search my reviews and found my updated Soda & Swine review dated 8 & 10 years ago. O_o !! Now, food is still served, however, there's a new name in town called "Fortunate Son" (next door, connected). Apparently, food now served is Asian-inspired. I've not visited recently to taste. The North Park area is a great neighborhood with many different types of food close by. While you're there, don't forget to stop by "An's Dry Cleaners", where the most inventive gelato's, ice creams and sorbets come from. read more

I would say the one piece is service could be slow due to people there but drinks are great and GO during Christmas...you know the rules, one quick review, let's go: Food/Drinks: AWESOME and ever changing. Unsure if I should write this review here or for Fortunate son (their sister restaurant) but I'll include both. Initially I had tried going to Fortunate son but there was about a 30-45 minute wait on a Tuesday night at ~8pm. Since it was late and we didn't want to wait, we ended up going to their sister bar next door, which was open seating and we were able to sit immediately. They had the same food items served. We didn't actually get any drinks at the bar here but I must say the ambiance is SO CUTE. This is the perfect spot to get a drink, go on a cute romantic date night, and hang out. As for the food, the review is more for Fortunate son but since we ate here, this is where the food review will go. Ambiance: 10/10 Staff: 10/10, super friendly and helpful Lo mein: 9/10, not oily at all, shrimp were seasoned to perfection, and overall seemed like a good quality spin to a normal take out dish Wonton soup: 1/10, this felt like a miss. The soup was super bland and nothing was really tasty about this dish unfortunately Crab Rangoons: 0/10, unfortunately also a miss. There was little to no filling in these crab rangoons and so I really couldn't eat it. It was just fried wonton paper. String beans: 7.5/10, these were well liked at our table. Good flavor! Overall, I'd come back here for the ambiance and perhaps the lo mein and string beans and definitely to try a drink. It was just a bummer that the food that wasn't good, really wasn't good. Polite Provisions is housed in an old pharmacy and it has so much style and charm. We loved every decision they made with the decor. My mom and I stopped in early in the evening and enjoyed our time there. I loved my spicy margarita, but my mom was disappointed with her root beer float because their root beer is more of a ginger beer which she wasn't expecting and didn't want. I mentioned that to the bartender as I was cashing out and she mentioned that she also doesn't like it for the same reason and I wish she would've said something when we ordered. Polite provisions is a winner! Some of the tastiest and craftiest cocktails in all of San Diego with a dope prohibition era decor and vibe. They spare no expense with the presentation and decor and it puts you in the mode to get some boujee delicious drinks. The cocktails are pretty fairly priced, but you should expect to pay around $15 a drink. I've never made a bad pick when adventuring away from my go tos. There's a handful of nonalcoholic, handcrafted sodas that you can get ala mode--a unique offering for us teetotalers. Got the Sparkling Almond and Cinnamon Cherry Cola. They're interesting and tasty, just wish they were not so heavily propped up with so much ice. The outside patio seats are well heated and there's real oil lamps on each table. Beautiful decor inside and i love that you can order food from the Chinese restaurant next door, Fortunate Son, and they will bring it over. Parking is definitely a struggle here, because of the area. Definitely plan ahead and carpool is probably your best bet. We got here around 3:40 p.m. on a Saturday and it took us a bit of driving around to finally grab a spot. I know this place can get really packed later into the evening, but at the time we arrived it was pretty empty. Be prepared they will ask you for ID regardless of how old you look, it's just a precaution. They asked us to show ours as soon as we stepped to the bar. We sat down and were served very promptly, I ordered a blue velvet. When it came out it wasn't quite as blue as the picture, but the taste was exactly what I wanted. Light with just a little sweetness but not too much. I like that the Ice Cube has their initial stamped into it. I also like that they use the one large ice cube instead of a bunch of Ice cubes. They have a good amount of seating, and I look forward to coming back here again to stay longer, and possibly have some food delivered from next door. We were standing/sitting so close together, we might as well be one big party. Despite being so busy, the hosts and bartenders were very attentive and friendly. The vintage decor is sooo classy especially with the awesome Christmas decorations this time of year. But you gotta have some patience if you wanna get in with their first come first serve mess.
