I had this place bookmarked for my trip to San Diego from New York after doing a search for non-alcoholic drinks. This place came up as a completely alcohol free bar and I was so excited to try it out. The bartenders were friendly, the vibe in here is so awesome. Cool things to look at on the walls, an entire shelf of non-alcoholic wines and beers, merch from the owner herself, it was a very unique and hip place. I really couldn't believe I had the bar to myself on a Tuesday night around 6. The message this place stands by is what makes it amazing to me. Check out their website, you'll see what I mean. In the mornings they have functional coffee drinks and by night they have functional cocktails. There were delicious options to choose from, some with Kava, some with CBD. I ended up going with the drink called the weekend, which was watermelon, coconut, peach, cherry sour and lemon. It was garnished with a sour patch watermelon candy and that's exactly what it tasted like. I just had one drink and closed out and my bill came to $21 and I was like eeeeeek. I love the idea of this place, being sober myself and still someone who loves a bar and the social atmosphere I think this place is amazing and needed in every city but I wouldn't stay here and hang out because of the drink prices. Word on the street is that the 2 female owners had some disagreements with their investor so there's somewhat bad blood and that's always a bummer to hear people especially those in the sober community not be able to resolve their differences after they've made such an incredibly safe haven for us to enjoy. The place was almost empty around 8pm, which we found concerning for its prospective longevity. We also thought the prices were pretty steep -- maybe I'm biased as someone who drinks alcohol, but if I'm getting a mocktail or other NA drink, I'd like to pay less than $15+ for it. Still, I ordered the Ave Maria and thought it was one of the best mocktails I've ever had. One of my friends got the Malibu (he liked it but did complain about the price), and I don't remember what my other friend got. We sat for a while and played Connect4 using the fanciest set I'd ever seen. Some more people came in, so it didn't feel nearly as empty by the time I left. Ahh, I'm sad I had to leave this type of review because I was really excited to come here as a longtime Mac Miller fan. I came around 11:00am and saw they had coffee and teas on the menu, so I had pretty high hopes, especially since I believe their syrups are homemade. I got two drinks, a chai and a coffee. Unfortunately, the chai was basically not drinkable--it tasted like straight syrup, almost like a candle haha. The coffee was pretty mid too. I got the horchata latte, and honestly it just tasted like a regular oat milk latte. There were two people working, and the person taking orders seemed really stressed and was stressing out the other worker who was making the drinks. They weren't communicating very well, drinks were being mixed up, and overall it just felt like a really rushed experience. The actual space itself is so nice and cool, and they were playing Mac, which I loved. There was a small line to order at the bar. Two of us chose the Desperado, and my other friends opted for the Cruise Control, and the Finer Things. My drink was the Desperado, which was spicy, but I would have liked more mango flavor. The Cruise Control has ube in it, so it was a pretty purple mocktail. Right now I'm sipping on the "Oy Vey" -- a kava drink with Metolius chia, oat milk, and nutmeg. It's my first time trying kava and it's genuinely interesting. If I had to make an analogy: Kava to an alcoholic drink is like Impossible meat to vegan food. It gives you that cocktail-style kick and complexity, but without the alcohol. Really cool experience. The ambiance in here is incredible. When I walked in, there was a tarot card reader, a photo booth, and even a tattoo artist doing flash tattoos (looks like a Friday the 13th / Valentine's event). My fiance and I are Big Mac miller fans and we felt that though there are pictures of him, that and the name are about all that gives honor to his artistry. Non alcoholic drinks were good, it's nice as a sober person to have that option. But ultimately it seems like just a gay bar with pictures of Mac miller, I think using his name to get fans to come and then not playing his music is a big let down. I really love that sober options are having more than a moment... More than just needing to order soda instead of a cocktail.. More than just a small mocktail section of three drinks on menu filled with other cocktails. What really impressed me the most with good news bar was that menu actually. Under their functional "cocktails", they listed how the drink would make you feel. When I went to the soft opening, I was really low energy and exhausted and drained from work. I wasn't sure if I was even going to have a good time, but I was meeting friends there and I didn't want to miss out on this. I ended up ordering two of the drinks that were labeled as energizing and social, and I definitely felt that within 15 minutes of having the drink! They have things like kava, reiki, mushroom powder, and other things that actually will give you a satisfying social experience if that's what you're looking for. I drink alcohol regularly and do not regularly consume alternative beverages. And yet I had a great time and ordered a few drinks. The atmosphere is really cute, great green couches and Mac Miller photography over the walls. If you're wondering why he's there, it's because good news was the name of one of his songs and it's honoring his struggle with addiction and saying that there's good news out there about getting better. Some advice for the team/ considerations beyond what I loved here: - drinks are still $12-18, normal prices for cocktails but more than most mocktails you'll find elsewhere. I do understand these have more complex ingredients, but it still was a shock. Time will tell how people respond to this. - live entertainment or pop up events are a must on this space. I felt like I needed something else to do there and so we didn't stay long. - there was no food! Pop up vendors, snacks, anything is a must. - the service was very slow.
