Delicious chicken + Yucca & best plantains ever
    Engrish T.

This place is an absolute gem. The chicken was well seasoned, juicy and delicious. The yucca was perfect, soft on the inside, crispy on the outside. But what blew me away were the plantains. They were the best I've ever had!! Loved that they were cut smaller to maximize caramelization. The photo is missing the other 3/4 of the chicken cuz they were on our plates. Can't wait to pick up my kiddo from JMU to come here again.

    Carne Asada

Stopped by here during lunch time. The guy taking our order at the register was nice and helpful as it was our first time trying this place out. I got the carne asada and my niece got a quarter chicken with fries and yuca. My carne asada was ok but I felt like it lacked flavor. The beans and rice were just ok as well. My niece's chicken was really small, she ordered a quarter chicken but it was super tiny. I tried a piece and wish I had ordered that instead of the carne asada. The chicken was really flavorful. Don't know if I'd go back but if I did it would just be for the chicken.

    Pretty damn good chicken.

I was passing through Harrisonburg and I was in one of my cravings and this time for some Peruvian chicken and some yuka. Yelp to the rescue and it led me to this hidden gem. Apparently this used to be some other restaurant but this new one is a hole in the wall. The owner is this young man who was very friendly and approachable. He recommended to spice it up using a tabasco sauce on the white rice which gave the rice a kick. Their rotisserie chicken is seasoned perfectly. I ordered the half chicken and I ate it down to the bone, sucking each bone until the flavor was gone. Another favorite thing here is their GREEN SAUCE, which is homemade according to the owner. That green sauce is definitely spicy so beware. However the spiciness is like wasabi as it is hot for a little bit and then disappears ready for your next bite. The yuka satisfied my craving, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, not burnt; I devoured that as well. If you're looking for MOIST, TENDER DELICIOUS CHICKEN and perfectly cooked YUKA, I would recommend this FOODGASM spot.

The first time I came across them was during the Saturday morning Downtown Charlottesville City Market (pre-covid). I've also encountered them at Charlottesville Festival of Cultures (pre-covid) and most recently at the Autumn Nights Thursday Night Market (which ended in October *SAD*).  We ordered the pulled pork sandwich, lomo saltado and tried a few empanadas (the chicken empanada & the beef, egg & olive empanada. Amidst everything eaten, the pulled pork sandwich truly stole the show! The sandwich included a heap of Wandering River Farm pork shoulder with pickled red onions and jalapenos on a light, fluffy bun. The meat wasn't thinly pulled like I'be seen in many American based pulled pork sandwiches, but more broken into small, juicy tenderized bite size morsels, lathered in an amazing creamy spicy sauce and then piled on top of the buns - overflowing onto the platter with a side of fried sweet potatoes. The fried sweet potatoes were also pretty good - they kept their shape and were actually fried in thin circular slices. Unfortunately, by the time we demolished the pulled pork sandwiches, they had lost some of their fresh crunch and thus were a bit softer than expected, but nonetheless the fried sweet potatoes were a good side dish to the sandwich! The lomo saltado was stir fried beef tenderloin with onions and tomatoes, served with a side of papas fritas (hand cut potato fries) and white rice. This dish was prepared on the spot - cooked over an open stove and thus the flavors were super fresh and worth the wait~ The empanadas had thicker, doughier shells (which I really appreciated) and were filled to the brim with meat. Not super spicy but the sauces that came with them really gave the flavor an extra

Both the server and the owner were really nice and professional. Got a few different dishes to try a little bit of everything. Tried the ceviche, it was excellent down to the details. Even tasted a hint of ginger in the juice it is served in. A tiny detail but it sets it a step above most other places who don't bother. Also had the Papa a la huancaina which was very good! Had a tamal as well which was exactly what it should be, if not a bit on the small side compared to other places. For the main course I had the steak with two sides and it was perfect. The steak was cooked perfectly and was tender as can be. It was cooked perfectly medium as requested. Got fried yucca and fried plantains for the sides, both were very good. There were many other sides that were available to suit your preferences. Anyone who is in the area needs to give this place a try. It may not be the food you are used to but it offers many really good flavors. Nothing is oddly spiced that would be an issue for super picky eaters. I highly recommend checking it out if you are from the area, gambling at the casino or just traveling through. You will absolutely not be disappointed.

The Sausage gravy was a white, almost flavorless gravy. You could see bits of sausage in the gravy, but it sure did not taste like anything. It was very underseasoned. I added salt, pepper, and hot sauce to impart some flavor to it. The eggs, corned beef hash, and hashbrowns were cooked properly. The corned beef hash is of the canned variety, but it was crisped up nicely. And the hash browns were crispy. I added a bit of salt and pepper to the eggs and hash browns, and hot sauce on the corned beef hash. If I had not tried the Sausage gravy and biscuits - this would have been a 4 or 5 star review. My server asked me during checkout how everything was. I articulated my experience with the Sausage gravy. Service was good. Paid with Apple Pay. #4CsRestaurant
