Hidden gem in Harrisonburg. Delicious, flavorful, and juicy chicken for great prices! $20 gets you a whole chicken and two sides (see my photo), which is enough to feed three normal people or two very hungry college students. The interior is definitely dingy, feels almost sketchy walking in. Chairs and table are cheap. They have freezers with ingredients in them accessible to patrons(which could be a health violation). But despite the lack of care put into the appearance of the restaurant, the food is quality and service is quick. 5-10 minutes for your meal to come out and I'm sure it's made pretty fresh. Fries are nothing special, might even be a frozen brand but who knows. Plantains are done so well here! They are cut into small slices so that there is more caramelization on each piece, which enhances the flavor so much. And of course, the chicken. Super juicy and flavorful. Much better than a cheap rotisserie chicken. You will tear through this thing in no time because of how good it is. I'd probably recommend getting the food to go so you can eat in a more comfortable environment. But believe me, Polla a La Brasa is some of the best bang for your buck you can get in Harrisonburg! This place is an absolute gem. The chicken was well seasoned, juicy and delicious. The yucca was perfect, soft on the inside, crispy on the outside. But what blew me away were the plantains. I got the carne asada and my niece got a quarter chicken with fries and yuca. My carne asada was ok but I felt like it lacked flavor. The beans and rice were just ok as well. My niece's chicken was really small, she ordered a quarter chicken but it was super tiny. I tried a piece and wish I had ordered that instead of the carne asada. The chicken was really flavorful. Simply fantastic chicken! In the middle of a long drive on 81, I used my copilot time to find some non-chain food. Good thing this place popped up. Penominal Peruvian chicken with very serviceable sides. Tostones were peeled and properly twice cooked seconds after we ordered... but that's not what this place is about... The chicken... if you are not familiar with the intricacies of Latin/Carribian/South American chicken, this version is closest to Jamaica Jerk but without the hot spice and a bit less anice. There is lots of smoke, garlic, thyme, pepper and some salty/umami/citrusy notes that are hard to explain. I'll just say that, after eating every speck of our half bird to take care of our hunger, there is now a whole bird and a few extra sauces (the creamy one is pretty unique - closest to shrimp sauce at a hibachi place) tucked safely in our cooler heading for home. If you live in the area, or if you can spare a few extra minutes passing through, stop and get this chicken! read more

A great little Peruvian chicken place in an unsuspecting strip mall on the east side of Harrisonburg... We went here while staying at Massanutten ok the recommendation of resort staff (confirmed by Yelp of course!). The menu is small but mighty. I had a quarter chicken with yucca and a salad (I love that salad was a given!). He had half a chicken with rice and salad. My LOs shared chicken tacos (no hot sauce) that was perfect for sharing. The chicken was perfect and I have no complaints. The menu is limited but if you want good Peruvian chicken, check it out. If you want something fancy, I wouldn't bother. read more

I was passing through Harrisonburg and I was in one of my cravings and this time for some Peruvian chicken and some yuka. Yelp to the rescue and it led me to this hidden gem. Apparently this used to be some other restaurant but this new one is a hole in the wall. The owner is this young man who was very friendly and approachable. He recommended to spice it up using a tabasco sauce on the white rice which gave the rice a kick. Their rotisserie chicken is seasoned perfectly. I ordered the half chicken and I ate it down to the bone, sucking each bone until the flavor was gone. Another favorite thing here is their GREEN SAUCE, which is homemade according to the owner. That green sauce is definitely spicy so beware. However the spiciness is like wasabi as it is hot for a little bit and then disappears ready for your next bite. The yuka satisfied my craving, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, not burnt; I devoured that as well. If you're looking for MOIST, TENDER DELICIOUS CHICKEN and perfectly cooked YUKA, I would recommend this FOODGASM spot. read more

Love the chicken!! The yuca was so fresh and hot that it just melts in your mouth and the addition of the yellow sauce!!! Such an epic combination. The chicken was a little different from what I'm used to at home, maybe I like mine to be a little more well done and less on the fatty side but maybe that's just my preference . But the skin of the chicken was a lot better than most Peruvian chicken places I've been in. Definitely a hidden gem by JMU. Must try if you like Peruvian chicken. Ps. Went to Pollo a La Brasa today and walked out within 5 minutes. No customers were in the restaurant and the young lady at the register didn't acknowledge us, smile, or make any attempt to make us feel welcome. She had the death stare as if we were bothering her. There were no menus so I asked her and she pulled out a single dirty menu from under the register for our party of 4. No thank you. I can't imagine the other reviews for this place are real patrons as the comments are night and day from the reality. Recommend owners decide if they want to be in business or just close now and save money. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped by Polla a La Brase on a whim while we were on a road trip down to Tennessee. I saw that we were going to pass through Harrisonburg, so I started searching for lunch spots. I saw that this place as highly rated, and hey, who doesn't love Peruvian chicken? The place was very dim-lighted for the afternoon and was a big dingy, but the food made up for it! Chose this for my lunch spot while in town for a basketball tourney. This place did not disappoint. I often choose Peruvian or other South American places as they always cook good food. The owner is super nice and a great guy. Will be coming back when in town again. This is not a Peruvian restaurant. It is Mexican. The service was great! The food was delicious! ...but the menu was small and the restooms were in poor shape. If you're in the mood for some homemade tortillas with delicious toppings, this is definitely the place to go, but if you're in the mood for Peruvian ceviche.... don't come here. We were excited to have Peruvian style rotisserie chicken on our way home from Pittsburgh. We checked our trusty yelp app and found this place. It was located in a small strip mall near James Madison University. Although the guy at the counter was very friendly the restaurant gave me take out vibe. We recommended his favorites dishes as we discussed travelling central america. He explained that owners are from Honduras and gave their food a Honduran touch. We ordered a whole chicken, rice and yucca. The meal came with a small salad. All the food was very good. The yucca was a bit less fried than im used to and there were a few pieces that were not cooked enough. I would really like to see a restaurant make steamed yucca with side red onions... The meal was served with 3 dipping sauces instead of the typical 2. The whitish sauce was good with the chicken. The green sauce was more like chopped jalapeños than a sauce. It didn't have that addictive flavor that I expected. We really enjoyed our dishes food, but expected tradition Peruvian flavors. Our meal felt a bit flat on flavor. I thought we had pulled into the wrong place when we drove up. The restaurant is located in an out of the way industrial strip mall. However, as soon as you get out of the car you can smell the chicken cooking. The place is not much to look at, but the food gets the five stars. I had the half chicken which was taken fresh out of the oven and was steaming hot and flavorful. Perfectly cooked and you could taste the spice rub in the meat. It was served with two sides (I had the rice and beans. Yum!). My wife had the plantain special which we guessed would be like mufungo, but the plantains were sweet and covered with well seasoned ground beef and a delicious sauce. It was steaming hot. The girl at the register was less than helpful with describing what the meals came with. The food came far too quickly to have been freshly made. The chicken, though moist, was more seasoned and a bit spicier than expected as well, which was a huge negative for me as I am sensitive to spicy foods. It also was not hot enough in temperature, so it had either been sitting a while or was not fully cooked. The rice was good, but the plantains were swimming in grease. This place is legit as HELL, the flavors were just explosive. I stopped by here while I was helping a friend in the area and decided to step out of my comfort zone. I am used to roasted chicken and potatoes while traveling in italy, and that was the closest experience I had to compare it to. The difference is, these flavors are on a whole other level! I ordered the 1/2 chicken dinner (Rotisserie ) with black beans, rice & give fries. The chicken was very moist, well seasoned with just enough bite to make it enjoyable. All items came out piping hot. The black beans were very flavorful as was the rice & yuca fries. The staff wss pleasant enough not overly friendly but not rude either. Restaurant was clean, but not at all busy for a Wednesday night. I would recommend this restaurant if you are looking for Peruvian style chicken dinner. read more
