I have to say that the workers here work very hard. They're polite as well. But it's hard to eat here, especially on a hot day. The stove is right behind the counter and there was no ventilation in the restaurant. It was hotter inside than outside which made it unbearable to eat there. That's why we took our food to go. From my experience, the small unknown places like this tend to have some of the BEST flavoring. The small mom & pop shops and eateries usually have the best offerings.. besides, it's always better to support small businesses than the major chains. they already have money coming in. This place was really authentic feeling. It reminded me of taquerias I came across in LA, NY, TX & AZ. When the dishes came out, they explained what each one was - which I really appreciated. I'm back. Right after my dentist appointment I headed over to my favorite pupusa spot. Same as last time, I was able to walk right in and place my order. The owner is always pleasant, and made my order exactly as asked, the slaw being put in a container instead of on the platter. I didn't want my Pupusa to get wet until I'm ready to eat it, and I put the slaw on myself. Dont come for me I'm a picky eater. Overall my food was done before I knew it , its always brought out to the car to you. While waiting, the car next to me alerted me to the persons bringing my food out to me. What is this hidden gem??? So I stumbled across here after going engagement ring shopping with a friend at Towson Town Center. At first, I was a little bit worried because it looked sketchy from the outside but I told myself "best food is served at hole-in-the-wall places" and I went in. I am glad that I did. I got Lomo Saltado ($12.95) which was basically steak sauteed in olive oil, onions, tomatoes and herbs served with rice. I cannot comment on if it's authentic Peruvian food since my only experience with Peruvian food is at Chicken Rico. I will say that Pollo Amigo was delicious. They were not stingy about their portion of meat, meat was not chewy,well cooked, and seasoned perfectly. I am a meat + rice kinda girl so this hit the spot. They gave me this green sauce that was super spicy. It reminded me of the green sauce that I get at Chicken Rico. What made it even better was the service. This gentleman (I am guessing is the owner) kept stopping by to ask if we were doing good and gave us so much fries and grilled plantains. Overall, I liked this place much more than Chicken Rico. Better food, better service and cheaper food. I went to Pollo Amigo for the first time with a colleague over lunch. I got the chicken burrito. Quality authentic food at an unbeatable price point. I ordered a burrito, my colleague got the fajitas. He loved his and I loved mine. The pico was spicy, the sour cream was hearty, the guacamole, wholesome, and the burrito balanced. It was served with rice and beans. So fresh, so clean. It was so good, I went back the next day (today) to get the same thing. Their main attraction is their Peruvian style quarter, half, or whole chickens. I know what I'm ordering next time I'm in. Reminds me a lot of place I went to with my mom growing up. It's nice to see mom and pop businesses still thriving, and reminding me of home. The owners are good people. I forgot my wallet, so I ran home to get it. Their tacos were great, served with black beans and rice, pico de gallo and a wedge of lime. I love the corn tortillas (i am not a fan of flour). Just the right amount of tender grilled steak, spritz of lime and dig in. It was very fresh, light and the marinade of the steak pretty much took over the taco taste. Very simple and straight forward. The Jason Taco was smothered in cheese - inside was some sort of a steak stew...which was very unique but delicious. It also had rice and beans inside. My fiance' opted out of the sour cream as he isn't a huge fan - which i think was a good idea because the burrito was saucy already. Both the dishes were delicious and the portions were amazing. This was our second time here and we ordered 1/4 Peruvian chicken with rice and beans and pollo soltado. The Peruvian chicken was a dry, no seasoning, tasteless, meaty and salt less rotisserie type chicken and the beans were totally bland- no flavor at all. Nothing compared to Chicken Rico's Peruvian chicken in Baltimore. The chicken in pollo soltado was under cooked. The first bite I took and I got this raw chicken in my mouth- I lost my entire appetite at that very moment. The next few bites also had under cooked chicken. It made me feel sick. However, I did not want to waste the food so I had the rice with vegetables (minus the chicken). I don't know what has gone wrong with their food quality this time. I wanted to like this place but it was just average to me. I ordered the Jason Burrito (the price is now $11.95, not $10.95, FYI). I'm not a fan of sour cream and black beans so once you remove those from the meal, the burrito is just rice steak, and topped with melted cheese. I would've really appreciated being able to have more options to add to the burrito, even if it was plain, chopped tomatoes or some other vegetables. The pico de gallo and guacamole are served on the side of the burrito. They're very delicious and fresh but Pollo Amigo gives very small portions. I'm talking like a teaspoon of each. Needless to say, I had already finished the guacamole and pico de gallo before I even reached the halfway point on the burrito. And just in case you didn't get enough rice in your burrito (which I did--too much actually), then there's more plain rice as your side. I had plantain as a side order. The portion was great. It came out piping hot like the rest of the food. But it was not particularly sweet, like it needed a couple of days to ripen more. I barely ate two. The decor is definitely nothing to write home about. In fact it's kind of depressing. However, what Pollo Amigo lacks in ambiance is definitely made up by the delicious and CHEAP food! I got the 1/4 dark meat with plantains and salad as my sides and I cleaned my plate. The chicken was sooooo good. The skin and meat were so flavorful, and I had to try not to lick my fingers...too much.... They give you little dipping sauces for the chicken, but I didn't use those because the chicken was fine as is. And then there was the salad! I don't even really like salad, but I was trying to be healthy. Oh my god, that salad was so freaking good! I hadn't had a salad that fresh in so long. They put some sort of mayonnaise dressing on it (I think) so just a heads up in case you don't like mayonnaise. The plantains were also really good--they were firm and not all mushy. It really doesn't get any better than this, at least in America. Since I grew up right outside of DC I'm so used to having any kind of food I want in walking distance. I love to see small businesses succeed. It is very small and there are a few tables to sit down and eat but they're all taken at lunch. I believe its a family own restaurant and the people working there are extremely nice. It just made me so happy. So anywayssss! The food. Was super hungry one day and decided to get steak! I knew it wouldn't disappoint. Ordered the lomo saltado which was steak, onions and french fries all cooked together with a side of rice. You can get beans on top of your rice, I opted out this time. (that probably doesn't make any grammatical sense). As one would expect from properly prepared Peruvian chicken. Very moist. Strong flavor. All business. I liked the aroma from the cumin rubbed on the chicken. So good, I couldn't control myself and ate more than half a chicken. Although not necessary since the chicken itself carries lots of flavor, Pollo Amigo has two sauces - a white mayo based sauce, and a spicy green sauce. I also tried the yucca and fried plantains as well. Like the chicken, both of these side items boast great flavor. Paired all this food with a can of horchata. I love horchata. Yea, horchata. Ambiance (7.5/10) = a small shop with maybe 4 tables at most. Not much glamour here. When you come here, it's all about the food. Service (8.0/10) = really liked the guy that took our order. Very friendly. Overall opinion = A great find during a recent trip to the Baltimore area, thanks to Yelp. Yelp does it again! I searched "lunch" in Towson, MD and Pollo Amigo came up. After reading some of the reviews I knew this was going to be good. As others have suggested, this is a hole in the wall with a limited menu, but it sure does pack a punch. The restaurant has minimal tables inside so don't be shocked if you are obligated to "carry-out". I opted for the 1/2 chicken ($8), which came with a combination of white and dark meat as well as two sides of your choice. I opted for the classic rice and beans. The spice rubbed rotisserie style chicken was delicious! The chicken had the perfect amount of spice, with crispy skin and juicy flesh. The rice and beans were also very good - a perfect accompaniment to the flavorful chicken. The platter also includes a spicy green sauce and zesty white sauce, both work harmoniously with the chicken, rice and beans. In short, this place is the real deal for chicken. The fries are so random but it is what I love about it. The plantains I wasn't a huge fan of, I am used to them when they have a glaze of some sort on them, these are just plain roasted. You get a TON with a side order, but unfortunately I just didn't like them. First time I ordered to go, second time I ate there. They don't have many tables, all miss matched and even some random tables outside in random places where they could fit. I was shocked to find a peruvian place in the middle of Towson. This is probably the only Peruvian restaurant in the area, they also have a large selection of mexican dishes. My girlfriend and I ordered the Chicken saltado and roast chicken with plaintains and beans. The roast chicken is flavored to perfection, the seasoning on the chicken is on point. The plantains were soft and sweet on the inside with a caramelized crunch on the outside. The beans were creamy and salty goodness over rice. The chicken saltado is sauteed chicken breast with peppers, onions and french fries over rice. Carbs over carbs, mmmm. There is plenty of seating and the pricing is just right.
