Pollo Campero is a chain fast-food restaurant serving Mexican style chicken that was located near my hotel when I was visiting Houston. I ordered online for pickup and used their website, which has very good eye appeal and is straightforward to use. After placing my order, I went to the restaurant for curbside pickup. However, after following the directions in the curbside pickup area, I was told to go inside to pick up my order--what's the point of having a curbside pickup area when the service was not offered? I entered the restaurant and it is clean, with tables closed off in consideration of social distancing measures. There is a large bottle of hand sanitizer on the counter and the lady told me to wait a few more minutes, as they are still preparing my order. Overall, the staff were professional, but not too friendly. They serve Pepsi products at Pollo Campero, as well as some Mexican drinks such as Horchata and Mango juice. In time, my order did come out and it was well packaged. I brought it back to the room, and there was certainly value in the amount of food! I ordered the four piece meal with drink and empanedas, which is more than ample for one person! The roasted chicken was juicy, while the fried chicken was very tender, but not as crispy as I expected. The empanedas came with a good sauce and has a good filling inside, while the yucca fries were okay. The coleslaw and rolls were on the bland side. Overall, the meal was acceptable in taste, and generous in quantity. As this is a chain fast-food establishment, variations in service is something to be expected, and this place certainly met mine. read more

I miss eating at this chain. I spent a lot of time in Guatemala and loved eating at these fast food places. There are now several in the U.S. and try to eat here when I am in a city that has them. It isn't the greatest food but really good for fast food. If you are not a fan from before they were in the US, you may not understand the great following it has in Central America. 3.5 stars. We stopped and took advantage of the drive through, which was friendly and fast! The grilled chicken is lemony, garlicky and delicious, worthy of 4 stars. The sides were 3 star and rather disappointing. Corn tortillas were cold, cracked and very dry. Coleslaw was just cabbage and Mayo, so very bland and one note. Fried Yucca was cold and greasy. Received a coupon for Pollo Campero; one of which was for a free meal without having to purchase anything. So off to Pollo Campero I went because, why not? It was a good time as ever to try this place out. I mean, that was the whole purpose of the free meal offer after all, right? It was about 30 minutes before closing time, but since I was ordering to go, that didn't matter to me. With the free meal, I was supposed to get 2 pieces of Campero fried chicken, 2 pieces of grilled chicken, two sides, and a roll. For the sides, I asked for some rice and fries. They didn't ask me what kind of meats I wanted, but since it was free, I didn't bother to specify what I wanted either. I got home and opened the box. I had been given one fried drumstick, one fried wing, one grilled wing, and one breast. I would have preferred an extra fried breast instead of the drumstick, but again, FREE! The fried chicken pieces weren't impressive. I like my fried chicken to have a bit of a kick to it. Or, if not, then it better be damn tasty. The fried chicken here didn't have any kick to it, and although enjoyable, it wouldn't be something I'd be willing to drive out of my way to get. I enjoyed the grilled chicken a lot more than I did the fried chicken. However, I thought they were way too greasy. As for the sides, I really enjoyed the rice but not so much the fries. The fries were cold and soggy. I understand it was pretty close to closing time, but when I was there, they still had a bunch of chicken but not fries. The roll didn't impress either because the one that I was given was tough and cold. I understand that I came in with a free coupon and not as a paying customer, but I'd imagine that if you really want new customers to start coming back, you'd want to impress me and give me the freshest food instead of what seems to be leftover? When I first saw the construction from grassy field to a building, I was very excited to see the new development in this mixed neighborhood. Wait, another chicken joint opened at this brand-new strip mall near this busy intersection? Pollo Campero joined 5 other chicken restaurants within a mile on Beechnut (KFC, Popeye's, Regio, Church's & Frenchy's). Yeah, birds aren't welcome, but hungry people are. I always welcome new restaurants to the area, especially something unique. The food was pretty good, as other reviewers said. However, there are some missed basics. - Parking is a nightmare. The strip mall was not even half occupied, but the parking lot was already full during lunch & dinner hours. I had no choice but park at the strip mall next door and walk across a flowerbed. - I was surprised to know not a single staff tried every dish. When I asked about the spiciness or their personal favorite, I got a blank stare. I suggested it to Mikey (he denied to be a supervisor nor a manager). I'll have to quiz them again next year. I read every review from other Pollo Campero restaurants. Just about everyone praised on the grilled chicken - Peruvian pollo. Since I was rookie with this new pollo, I decided to try the "Latin Shake" as the advertised special. Talk about the poorly decided packaging; they squeezed chicken and side dish containers into a bag that barely fit. Worse of all, it was top heavy. So I put it on the table, it went like a Slinky and tumbled on the floor. I was mad and embarrassed at the same time. They manager quickly ordered someone to clean it up and replaced my food. I exited the restaurant quickly. After I drove away, "Oh, sh**!" They forgot to give me my drink. Guess what? My replacement was packed the same way. This Pollo Campero just opened. I know they have a lot of room for improvement. I do hope they hurry up, because the crowd is coming soon. The grand opening fiesta is on 11/5/15. I first visited Pollo Campero in LA years ago, and was super excited when I found out that a chain opened up right across the street from my job. I arrived around 1pm on a Monday and the tiny parking lot was completely full. I walked inside and was greeted by employees that went out of their way to provide excellent customer service. I already knew what I wanted, but it was nice to see the other choices. I had no idea they also served things like tacos and empanadas. The two piece meal came with a side, chips and an option of tortilla. The price of the meal is more expensive than other fast food chains. First off, I waited like 10 minutes for the meal to come out. I heard one of the waitresses explain they ran out of chicken and are cooking up another batch. I guess they are still pretty new at this stuff since the location only opened a short while ago. The good thing is the chicken was hot and fresh when it was brought out. The breading was tasty, but the chicken itself was moist. The side I choose was fried yucca, which tastes just like potatoes to me. They're cut thick, like proper English chips you would find at fish and chip shops. However, I only got four pieces with my meal, which I thought was rather skimpy. There's a salsa bar for chips and they had three kinds, a green tomalito, a chipotle and a hot red one. There's also pico de gallo, onions and cilantro mix on the salad bar. For drinks, they have the standard soda fountain as well as horchata, mango and guava fruit juices. I tried the horchata and found it a bit too strong on the cinnamon. There was like half an inch of cinnamon at the bottom of my glass. Horchata is a sweet drink made from rice, kinda like sweet soymilk with cinnamon. Overall, it wasn't really what I had expected in terms of fried chicken tastiness or value. But I might be back and try other things offered on the menu. 4/5 stars! read more

First I will like to say, that food is wonderful. Unfortunately the last few times we went they were out of grilled chicken. Each and every time we go, we get told that there is always a wait. Today we went through the drive thur spoke to one employee. We asked for a 12 piece family meal and off the back only offer fried chicken. This place is a total deception for this brand. During the CRISIS OF CORONAVIRUS we went by for the very first time to try and purchase some chicken to go for our families. It had been the first time for us at this location and the shift manager treated us like CRAP. We didn't know where the drive thru ordering intercom was and we saw cars pulling up to the window. We therefore, went to the line and proceed to wanting to order in there but the shift manager THOMAS with a very angry attitude basically screamed at us telling us literally "YOU MUST ORDER AT THE SPEAKER" (in Spanish) we then told him that we were sorry and that this was our very first time at his location. With all this bad attitude I wanted to make sure I got his name and title so I can proceed with a corporate complain because I don't believe this restaurant represents the corporate culture and value of Apollo Campero. We went inside the store (as to not hold up the line) and asked for his name, GM name (Iliana) and store number (Which he claims he didn't know) and just told him that his attitude as how he was treating clients (specially first time buyers) was not correct and was not representing the values of his employment brand. With all this he didn't once apologize nor did he change his attitude. I don't believe this should be allowed or be the way of operation SPECIALLY in the mist of a pandemic as we are all suffering in every aspect and new business should always be welcomed with OPEN ARMS and gratefulness.
