Will never go back! Owner snotty and charged me for extra mild sauce and they didn't tell me when I asked for it and they have never charged for it in the past. Then he lied and said I had more than I had. The Rikin's were only about a fourth of the way full and I had four which really only made one if they filled them right. Wow! This place is busy! It is a small place, with all the tables full, then there are people lined against the wall, waiting for go orders, not counting drive thru! The menu is spread across the wall. Unfortunately, in order for me to see it, I had to stand next to a table of people eating. I apologized and told them it was my first time. They just waved and kept chomping. I settled on steak burrito for hubby and Al pastor nachos for me. Never had that kind before. I had to wait against the wall, but there was a support beam right there, which made it awkward for waitresses to go around it, me and the others. We managed. The guy running the waitresses, money and general traffic back there was magnificent. He was quick with your order, pronto with orders coming back and the flow was smooth, orderly and refreshingly, no bad moods over it! When I got home, we settled in to eat. From the outside, it seems like it would be really, really small inside, but it's actually bigger than it seems. And you know what.. Same with the tacos! Wichita is not lacking for fantastic Mexican restaurants, and if it was just a matter of the al pastor, carnitas, and barbacoa meeting snuff, I could leave my five stars, finish this sentence, and move on to the next review. But there's a little more to Pollo Express. Aside the standard taco fillings I've already listed, they offer a "transmission" taco, a discada-like filling of chorizo, peppers, and onions that gets its name from it being just a little bit greasy. It's a little messy and a lot of indulgence, but I liked being able to try something different. The menu claims fame for the tortas, and while the crispy pork tenderloin in the hefty torta de lomo is indeed pleasurable, the notoriety of Pollo Express is found in their eponymous chicken. Rotisserie chicken is common among street vendors in Mexico, but it's not often seen in the Mexican restaurants around here. The bird is slathered in a paste of guajillo chiles and left to rotate on a spit until ready for consumption; all you need to complement the vibrant earthiness of the chiles on this tender and juicy bird is some tortillas and some salsa. At first I was a little disappointed that the rotisserie chicken wasn't incorporated into more of the menu - I would have loved to see it as an option for a taco or torta. The interior is dated, but very clean. Seats perhaps two dozen and it was full while we were there. The service was great...super friendly and efficient even while very busy! We were offered an endless basket of warm chips and three different salsas..mild, hot & verde. All fresh & scrumptious! The Super Nachos were...SUPER! Completely loaded including fresh homemade guacamole (TDF) & tons of fresh cilantro!!! If you enjoy nachos...these are a must! The carne asada taco dinner was the hit! Three of our five ordered #9! I've been going to Pollo Express about since the time I read Brad S.'s review here. I started with the pollo, duh, because I believe that when a place offers such a broad menu, as many like Pollo do, you should go with what they're pushing. It might all be ok, but it won't all be REALLY good. So I started with the namesake chicken. And it's REALLY good. Upon going back many more times I learned a few other things: they make the chiles rellenos freshly, not frozen as many other Mexican restaurants do, and they are a menu highlight--you can taste that difference. In fact, they run out of them frequently on busy weekend nights, so if you want your chiles rellenos, get there early. I also learned that the al pastor is pretty good for a place that doesn't make it from a trompo (a vertical spit), and the carnitas are also a very decent impression. But I had never tried the "transmission" taco until recently after the Eagle article, and now I have to agree: this and the al pastor at Taqueria El Fogon are the most authentic tacos in Wichita. ALL of the tacos in Mexico City taste like this--full of meat and really juicy, because that tortilla is dry!--the transmission taco is really closest, for me, to what in Mexico City is called a "Campechano"-style taco-- chorizo plus one other meat (it varies which). Delicious. So the other thing I learned is that the family running Pollo Express is from Mexico City. All of the regions of Mexico have their noted regional specialties, of course, but in the capital it's tacos, tacos, tacos, and more tacos. I wasn't really expecting much from this quant building just off of Pawnee. I've heard good thing but I just didn't know. Well, it's good...really good. Let your eyes drift to the lower part of the menu to the chicken. My wife and I shared the half chicken with beans and rice. It comes with tortilla so you can wrap all that goodness up and top it with their homemade salsa. Speaking of homemade, you need to try the guacamole. It is so fresh, chunky, and perfect that you will be ruined from ever enjoying the supermarket variety again. The chicken is tender without losing its juicyness. Flavorful without bring salty. My take: It took me four years of living in Wichita to find this gem. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT let the outside of the restaurant sway you from trying this joint. It is one of the best authentic Mexican food that I have ever had. Period. They claim they are "Wichita's BEST Mexican Tacos" and I can certainly attest that they are. Below are details you may find helpful. Location: Pawnee and Meridian. It is worth the drive whether you live in West, East or North Wichita. Parking/Establishment: Parking isn't terrible. It can be a bit packed during lunch. Very small building. During prime lunch/dinner hours, it isn't a bad place for a date or meal for two. Tonight we had a table for six so we got very lucky. Greeting/Hostess service: I've always been greeted with a smile, along with chips and amazing salsa. it is seat-yourself where seats are available but the food is so good we have waited either indoors or outdoors for an open spot. Menu/Prices: Food ranges from breakfast burritos to lunch and dinner items (tacos, tortas, enchiladas etc) Food: I've only had the torta and tacos so I can only review these two items. The torta comes with choice of meat, beans, pico, mayo and lettuce served on the freshest bolillo bread that I have ever tried. It is also one of the biggest tortas that I have experienced and could certainly serve as a meal itself (they usually ask if you want fries, I usually decline because I get a taco as well). Ask for the transmission taco. It is a traditional taco on a corn tortilla but what really sets them apart from other tacos are the grilled onions. Drinks: The horchata is amazing. They also offer Imported Coca-Colas from Mexico (YUM), Jaritos, and fountain drinks. Service: Service is always amazing, no matter how busy they are. They are definitely some of the most polite staff that I have encountered. It is also quick service so if you find yourself waiting for an open table, do not be discouraged. Which sounds daunting but for approximately $5 per person. And we're left full each time. Never disappointed.
