This place is very close to my house, so I have tried it a couple of times. Each time I get a very angry lady as a server, and the food looks like it came out of a can and was microwaved. This place gets recommended all the time, and I have no idea why. I don't mind a hole in the wall, but this plate is especially offputting. It sort of looked abandoned from the outside, and going inside doesn't really change that impression. Villar's Mexican Café has some of the best tasting authentic Mexican food in Wichita. It's a small family owned restaurant and I have not seen one young person working in there. I say that because some people can be so critical of others, and you don't know someone else's story. Ruth is the older lady they speak of who works there. Sometimes she's nice sometimes she's kind of Kurt. If you walked around all day and you were her age helping people some pleasant some not; don't get breaks and you do it all day long and are of a certain age, You may be a little grouchy too. Maybe this isn't the place for you to stop the next time you come through Wichita, but for us locals, we're darn happy with the food. First time visitor from out of town and I liked the Deluxe Burrito lunch. Big chunks of pork were well flavored and portion was great. I was a little confused by the beef chili poured over the top which was tasty but very rich. My burrito wasn't served with rice or any side & when I asked for sliced avocado or guacamole to help offset the strong meaty flavor, they said they didn't have any guac & avacado was not ripe. I asked if I could get something green and the lady suggested lettuce. I said yes "just a bit" and asked for a few slices of tomato on the side & she told me she'd have to charge me extra. They charged me $1.50 two small bowls of each. It seems if you are a Mexican restaurant you should have guac at lunchtime or else throw some free lettuce on the side of the plate. When I tried to gently provide this feedback at the end of the meal & saw how much extra she charged for lettuce, the lady became very hostile & defensive. Not willing to receive friendly feedback or suggestions. Beware! But other than this, food & service was ok. Salsa was watery but tasty. Corn chips yummy! My soda was refilled promptly and the older lady checked on me several times. Prices seem a bit high (one taco with rice or beans is $8.50). But my burrito was only $ 9.50. The older lady told me to get the Monterrey next time cuz that comes with sour cream, lettuce, and avocado (I guess when they are ripe)? It's also 9.50. Not extra for lettuce? Atmosphere was a bit dumpy with torn seats and old stained carpet. Bathroom was freezing and overall temp in restaurant was chilly. I'd go back if I was really in the mood for a taco with lettuce! Didn't give a ticket when checked out so didn't know what I was charged. At home looked up the charge and it was $21 for two lunch taco specials with rice and water. The special wax advertised for $7.50 each which would have been $15 plus tax - where did the $21 charge come from. BE WARE AND DEMAND YOUR TICKEET BEFORE YOU PAY. THE SERVICE WAS NOT FRIENDLY AT ALL. The salsa was running nothing with no substance and the rice was plain no seasoning. Will mot return or recommend. read more

This is the last time we will be in here. The older woman was rude to a family with their grandchild. This isn't the first time the older woman not wanting to wait on certain customers, even if they were long time customers or even new customers. I've heard where this place maybe closing soon, if it does, I hope that the owner gets people in that actually aren't rude, or flippant as to how they treat their customers. Mexican food at its finest. Family atmosphere and the most amazing food we have had in awhile. We split a double combination dinner which was $14.95. Two fried flour tacos, two tostadas, and two chili covered cheese enchiladas fed us both. They do not carry alcohol, but food is great. Closed on Sunday. read more

I think that Villar's Mexico Cafe has been a staple for my parents and I for about 10 years and I would like to keep it this way because I see the heart and work in the staff that it takes to run a business. The taste of the food is sooo delicious and it could only be better if there were more to have and then I think, "The meals are huge, how could there be any more to have?" but I know it's a business and it's great. I usually get the Deluxe Burrito and it's so good just what I want which is slow cooked pork. It's a real throwback to being a young adult and for that I will always love Villar's Mexico Cafe. I'm satisfied whenever I go in and they take care of you. read more

I walked in to this restaurant today with my mom she had called a head to get a to go order and when she got there she asked to be seated and wanted to eat there the owner told her she can't eat here and needed to buy her food and leave we had been there two minutes said nothing to no one to upset anyone, they had other customers sitting and eating it was 1pm so they was not about to close my mom has been coming to this place for years she thought the owner was messing with her at 1st but the owner would not let up told my mom she can take her food and go down the street and eat the food she had just bought form Viller's can eat it at the McDonald's she asked what could be the problem the owner just sold her the food and told her to get out. I don't know why they decided to pick out my mom but she left in tears. read more

I have walked this earth for a number of years and just recently found Villar's. I mourn those lost years. My tastebuds are suing for depriving them for so long. The cheese enchiladas are excellent. The beans are pinto and you could eat a whole bowl by themselves (just not near an open flame). The chips and salsa could go toe to toe with any other restaurants in Wichita at High Noon and not fear. The portions can make a large man giggle and a small man cry. Try you must! read more

Villar's Mexican Cafe, not to be confused with Villar's Mexico Cafe Delano, and most certainly not to be mistaken for El Mexico Cafe, is the Villar family's most recent of many, many restaurants this family has had in Wichita over the years. The menu is largely the same at both this and the Delano location, and based upon my review of the latter, you would think I would be ready to ream this place in a similar fashion. While the concepts and preparation seem to be pretty similar (number of microwave doors slammed while waiting for my meal: 9), here there was a little more care put into the whole enchilada, in a manner of speaking. Some kind of combo meal. The freshly-fried and very largo flour taco was filled with ground beef that was thankfully seasoned. Chili verde had large pork chunks that were tender and not dry. The cheese enchilada and its accompanying sauce ended up occupying half of my plate. I got the feeling the beefy sauce was meant to extend the meal and justify the slightly higher prices than I would normally expect for this type of food. Ditto for the single tamale I added on the side, which was also covered in the enchilada sauce. Rice and beans passed muster, though neither were extraordinary. They were better once I dumped a good bit of the salsa on there - the hot, not the mild, which tasted like canned tomato sauce. Entirely by accident, I ended up ordering almost the same exact meal that I had at Mexico Cafe Delano two years ago. This meal didn't suffer from the same flaws. This isn't my type of Mexican food, but at least at Villar's Mexican Cafe I can understand why people continue to walk through the door. It serves as a better homage to the Villar legacy of the past 35 years. read more

This is the Monterey we have searched for since the early 70s. Huge serving and so tasty. I prefer the roasted pork but the chunk is also excellent and they use real cheese. The first "Special Monterey" we ever experienced was at a place on Highway 54 that had been a gas station and the plate was called Nicks Special. Villars makes the closest thing to it. read more

This is a small mom and pop business, that makes you feel right at home from the moment you walk in, and great staff. This is one of my faves when I visit, I have to get their deluxe chili cheese burrito. Out had the most tender meat and its smothered cheesiness.. This place never fails me, and the portion size is enough for two meals for just under $10. They also have have excellent tacos but can never get both because the taco are a good size as well. read more

Went here for dinner, got the all meat burrito and ordered a taco to go for my dad at home. The meat was dry and the service was very slow. When I asked for the to go item, it took over 30 minutes to get me a taco. I can make one at home in less than 5, just saying. read more
