Bit pricey, as food trucks tend to be, but friggin amazing food. If you're in the area they're worth the stop.

The huarache is savory and it came with 2 hot sauces- one red and one green. The asada meat is well cooked and tastes delicious. The cheese, onion, and cilantro on top make it even better. Family-run taquerias are owned and operated by folks who often feature family recipes passed on by grandparents and other relatives who came from Mexico and beyond. You'll find familia in the kitchen. If that doesn't make it authentic, I guess I don't know what authentic means. That being said, Big Bro and I tried Los Portales recently. We were underwhelmed by the flavors until we put on the sauces. Sauces are a perfect example of differences in preference, not authenticity. The ones at Los Portales were thinner than what I prefer, but the flavors were just what was needed. What one person likes, another doesn't. The presentations were beautiful and the portions were large. I had a gordita which I expected to love but didn't. The thick house made tortilla was tasty, but I discovered I like crispy better. We devoured the guac and chips, delicious. Big Bro ordered his go-to for Mexican restaurants, chimichanga but it was just ok. Adding sauce made it more flavorful. Many people prefer the food at Los Portales and call it authentic. I also call it authentic, but prefer other recipes.

The service was fantastic, and it felt like a true family restaurant. The chips were so good, and the salsa was spicy but not too much for people with sensitive palates. I love this style of chips, not a thin restaurant style but a thicker, more savory bite. We went through one portion before our food got to us and they brought more out when I asked. I highly recommend the tacos. I made a mistake and asked for birria not quesabirria tacos, so make sure to specify that if you want quesabirria (with cheese). But, the birria was good anyways! I also got the taco macho (see the pic for what's inside), and wish I would've ordered 2 of those! My husband got the huitlacoche and squash blossom tacos and they were both so good. I was so impressed they had huitlacoche as an option, I've never seen that before! The drinks were ordered and delivered from the server, but she said since they're working on a liquor license they have a bar next door that makes them. If you order a drink with your food, they charge for the drinks and food separate for that reason. I liked my jalapeño margarita! My husband got a cantarito and said it's the best one he's had from all the places we've tried to far!

The streetcar boondoggle is not affecting their block so parking is available. Decor is calming. I did not opt for an adult beverage as they were a bit pricey and I needed to retain focus. Settled on chicken enchiladas. Very tasty with some kick. The cheese was drizzled on top rather than baked through. Service was exceptionally friendly, I suspect from the bartender/proprietor. Would definitely return if in the area, but for now I am generally avoiding streetcar construction chaos. If you are downtown anyway, go.
