This place has been around for a while and is still great. I have never been disappointed, not one single time, coming here for the past five years. The staff is completely professional and friendly. Hands down the food is absolutely great, the portions are huge, and the prices affordable. My works takes me away on long trips, sometimes months at a time. I go here for my last meal in Jersey. I get the steak and green spaghetti. It's not a pesto sauce.. it's something else , like basil and something! Just deliciousness!!! My wife gets the staple .. rice, beans, and chicken... very tasty, can't go wrong. Try the "papa la huancaina", it's potatoes with a light cheese sauce. Delicious.. Super tender chicken! Be prepared to wait especially at Dinner time and weekends. Street parking, it is hard to find a spot around the area but well worth the effort. All the meats are grilled. Besides the chicken, they offer steak and ribs and other delicacies such as beef heart kabobs, tripe, chicken hearts, liver, gizzards on the grill. Side orders too. Peruvian food. Try the Ceviche, T-Bone Steak, Arroz Chaufa, it's all good. Service is very good 90% of the time ( I go there alot) It's comfort food with a Peruvian twist. In this neighborhood full of Peruvian restaurants and many with the same name, this one is the best of all by far. read more

A client of mine recently took me here for lunch, going on and on about how great the food was, and how their chicken was the best I would ever eat. That was most certainly not the case. My 1/2 chicken was so dry and bland that I could barely even get enough of it down so that I would not make a scene. The hot sauce they provided was the only way I could eat the chicken, and when that ran out the waitor was nowhere to be found until he showed up later with the check. My goal now is to make up some excuse as to why we need to go somewhere else the next time I work for him. read more

I finally went back to this place as it used to be my favorite spot when I was a little girl. Sadly, I was very disappointed with the food. I order a half chick with french fries and salad. The check was cooked very well but it lacked flavor. The french fries were soggy which is terrible because how can you mess up french fries. As for the salad, the dressing which is a staple peruvian dressing had NO flavor :( I would go again, maybe it wasn't that great because I went close to closing time...we shall see next time. read more

I stopped here because of the picture of papa a la huancaina which is exactly what I was looking for and THANK YOU to whoever posted that picture because I ordered to pick up on my way out of town and the papa a la huancaina was perfect. Came here for some cheviche peruano. It's a lot different than what you get on the west coast - less spicy and not as lemony - but good, nonetheless. I had bistec encebollado, Sandra got lomo saltado. Robert had baked chicken, avacado and platanos maduros. Given that you really can't get food like this on the west coast, it was bangin! Out here, lomo saltado (steak with fries and onions with rice) will run you like $20! Over here, It was like $9!! Seriously, if you can get into Passaic, head over here! read more

The food is very tasteful and at a very reasonable price . The portions are also very generous . I've had Peruvian food in Miami and NYC so this is not my first time . It was pretty crowded when we went for dinner but our waiter forgot to put one of our orders in and he did not notice until we flagged him down about 20 mins after getting everyone else's food . I used to love El Chevere. Today I ordered two chaufas and two salads. The chaufas have a good tasted however the meat cut were so smalls, They used to cut them bigger. The single order is expensive $12 dollars so I believe they can afford to give you more meat. The salads in there are a very simple salad iceberg lettuce, two slices of tomato and 3 of cucumber with the secret dressing they have. It cost the whooping amount of $3. The side is very small and I know they are charging for the dressing however that increase is not justified. In top of it the amount of dressing in it was very little! I love Peruvian food but I will look for another restaurant. If I am going to be over charged then I got to Costanera in Montclair (which it is expensive as well) however, there you get great service, ambiance and gourmet plating. Service in Washington Place, Passaic location is HORRIBLE! I've been eating here for years and the service gets worse every time. The lady at the take-out counter is rude and has no respect for their customers. They are plenty of Peruvian restaurants that give better food and way better service. This place is great. My choice if i want Spanish food in the area... I usually get the half chicken since its so cheap for a good amount of food. But if i wanted to spend a little more i usually go for the lomo saltado or the chicken fried rice which both are awesome. The staff are nice and the decor is pretty good too. I wish that I could give this restaurant no stars that's how awful this place is! They make you wait a long time and then the food is disgusting. It use to be a good place to eat but now forget it! I've tried different place and they all taste like they were prepared before and they just reheat the food. The owner or manger is very inconsiderate of it's customers. Never again do not come here go somewhere else. The waiters are also very inattentive and will leave you sitting there while you have to get an employees attention. read more

I've been coming here since they first opened. The staff is always friendly, the food is always really yummy, yet addicting, and the prices are reasonable. I took away one star because the parking lot (public) sucks and looks dirty. The area is gross but once you're inside, you forget how crappy the outside area looks. If you want really good food that is fairly priced and don't mind the overgrown grass in the parking lot, or coughing up change for a meter, then visit this place. I have been in this restaurant a few times. The food is good. However, the service by the waiter is horrible. The waiters are flirtatious to girls and tell improper comments. One time, I went to eat at this restaurant with 3 friends. The waiter was courteous to my female friends but was very rude to my male friend. He almost threw the dish on the table. Most of the times, there is a vagabond in the front of the restaurant. He demanded money from me on two occasions. One time, he followed me to my car demanding money. I was afraid. Food is amazing, espcially the stuff potato ball with meat and raisins are amazing. I could go there just to eat that. I would have gave 5 stars,but they don't wait till you finish your appetizers. I've been to a few El Chevere spots, but I will not return to this one. I ordered by phone for pick up. I will preface this by saying that when you walk in, there are two possible places that you can pick up an order, it's not clear. I went to one side and stood behind a gentleman who was speaking to the man at the register. This conversation went on for a while and seemed more personal than business related. He saw me standing there and did not acknowledge me. I saw another customer was paying on the other side of the counter so I decided to go over there hopefully to get noticed. Well, the woman who had just taken the money from the previous customer decides to just walk off as I'm trying to get her attention. My food was sitting right there. So, I say "Excuse me, excuse me" to the man who has continued to have this personal conversation with the other gentleman and he ignores me. I repeated myself quite a few times and loud enough so I could get his attention. I then went back to the initial side of the counter and say "I have an order to pick up" pointing to where my food was. Can you believe he looked STRAIGHT AT ME and said nothing? I mean, we were looking eye to eye. Unbelievable. I went back to the other side and got another worker's attention and she finally gave me my food. Because of this atrocious customer service, I will never set foot in this establishment again. As for the food: The tostones were rock hard and the chicken was over salted. Came here on the recommendation of a Peruvian friend from Lima who lives in the area. My family LOVES this place. Location is hard to get to and the food is decent. I don't like ceviche ( which is the thing to get here) but the lomo and the seco are pretty decent. Huge portions and decent service. We ordered Takeout- the JALEA- which is baked potato, & seafood- Starting off, we paid cash & the woman refused to give us a receipt- hm.. got home after 40 mins driving & ate the food was so high in extra salt that my mothers blood pressure actually went up! baked potato was CHARRED- burnt, tasted nothing but salt. & the seafood was EXTREMELY HARD like rocks-& everythng was saltier than ever before. the food is usually great- but this experience was Hell. TO TOP IT ALL OFF, after getting home & starving the entire day we hadn't eaten anything, we started to eat it, n noticed all of this..my mother immediately had me call the restaurant- they tossed us around to different employees finally allowing us to speak to some man who said there was nothing he can do My mom of course three the food in the Trash bc she was so angry!!!!! we said well #1, your employee refused to give us a receipt which is sketchy to begin with- THEN he said we had to fish the food out of the garbage and carry it BACK to the restaurant:NOT: again we live 45 mins away!! this is ABSOLUTELY unacceptable business ! I used to love coming to this place or ordering from here at least twice a month. Unfortunately last time I came here I had a horrible experience and I will never ever come back. My food had a hair in it and when I told the waiter he simply removed my plate and didn't bring me a replacement nor had some type of discount on my bill. No manager approached me to apologize for it. I also had to go to the front to ask for my bill because my server was no where to be found nor stopped by our table to see if everything was okay. VERY DISAPPOINTING EXPERIENCE....my boyfriend and I stopped at this location, one stormy Saturday night. We had the best food ever and the waiter was wonderful. We were so happy with the food and service that we decided to drive from NYC to NJ to have a delightful dinner on 7/3/16. I went to the ladies room while my boyfriend being was seated. When I returned to our table, I noticed 3 waiters were hanging around at the entrance. The place was not busy however 15 minutes passed by and no one came around to ask us if we were being served or if we even wanted water. I was going to get up and get the manager but my boyfriend was being patient and told me to wait. A waiter went to the table next to us, 2 times, and didn't even acknowledge us. A man walked in and was seated behind us; his order was taken right away. A family of 4 came in after that and their order was taken, right away. We got up and started to leave. It was only then that this waiter asked if we were being served. We asked for the manager and explained everything. NOT ONE SINGLE WAITER OR THE MANAGER said a word. No apology, no, "please do not leave, we'll take care of you." NOTHING. All the diners in that area were looking and some shook their heads. This is not the way to run a business. We would up going to another location, it wasn't as nice, but when we told them what happened, they shook their heads. They were extremely nice to us and took care of us. It's very sad that this happened because we were really looking forward to having another wonderful experience and great food; this did not happen. read more

Tried this place after Peruvian friends highly recommended it. Bad experience started with parking. There is a public parking lot behind the restaurant. In addition to paying meter, you need to pay a mean looking gentleman to look after your car. Have never seen this. Initial service was great, very friendly, and food came very quickly. Food was decent, not quality, but good taste. Portions were huge (several people can eat from one plate). Then the waiter dissapeared, and we needed to find anyone to get us more drinks and dessert. The place was less than 40% full, and waiters were just hanging out talking. Then the tab came, and 15% had been added to the total (we were a party of four, so didn't understand this). Then came the credit card voucer which read PRE-TIP AMT (and this amount already included the tip!). So diners beware with this dubious policy. I doubt I would return. Then are places just as good in nearby areas that will avoid you all of the issues we encountered. read more
