This upscale Peruvian restaurant is very easy to find in the heart of Garfield. The ambience was very Latin centric with upscale field and Instagram worthy decor. The salsa music in the background gave it a nice touch as we enjoy a great appetizers and plentiful meals with phenomenal flavor. Highly suggested to try any of their wide range of plates, including the soups, ceviche, and fish dishes, and classic lomo and steak plates. The salad, including the mango and avocado salad was a hit, especially with the red onion. The only downside is we came on a Tuesday afternoon and the kitchen was understaffed so the food came out a little bit slow. However, everything was hot and still tasted amazing so we really didn't mind waiting for a little bit while catching up. The space is a small restaurant in a shopping plaza and will not easily accommodate parties larger than six. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area and are looking for an upscale twist to classic Peruvian cuisine. read more

Our first time trying this place. I asked the gentlemen on the phone how many people does one order of ceviche serve, he responded, "one." Since there were two of us, I ordered three - one for each and a shrimp one to try. NEWSFLASH: One order easily feeds five. It was no wonder the bill was $100 for 3 ceviches and a chicken w/ rice. Also, not the end of the world, but I'm used to the fish in ceviche coming in small, diced cubes. These were giant pieces and a bit too raw. The shrimp ceviche I'm used to uses cut pieces of shrimp, these are whole, so we had to cut them. The chicken chaufa/rice dish was good but tastes exactly like Chinese fried rice. We were thinking the chicken would be whole legs/thighs, etc. marinated in peruvian bbq or chimichurri sauce. It was tiny squares. Live n learn. The best part was the tortilla w/ sweet and sour sauce on it, but they only give you two tiny pieces. Would highly suggest they add a few in a separate container as there's a lot of rice. read more

Arriving about 12 pm on a Thursday, we found the parking lot full. After circulating around the parking lot a few times, we finally found a parking spot. Pisco De Mar is a small restaurant with about 12 tables. Although the restaurant is small, the white table clothes and professional looking table set-up make for an upscale appearance. The wall and ceilings also add to the overall ambiance. Promptly seated we ordered the Lunch Special ($12.99) which included an appetizer, main course and a drink. I had the Inca Cola because I am naturally curious, ceviche (marinated shrimp with onions in lime juice) and the Sudado de pescado (Peruvian steamed fish served with white rice. Really good Peruvian food, the place is a little small, but the service is good, I got the chicken anticuchos as appetizer, the lomo fino saltado and the seco de cabrito as a main, all the food was amazing, the chicha was good to. They also gifted me a small chilcano when I first enter. The only thing I didn't like that much, was a dessert, the passionfruit cheesecake, but the rest was awesome. read more

One of the best Peruvian restaurants I've been to outside of Peru. The food was very authentic and super fresh. Highlights include: Ceviche Mixto - outstanding flavor, includes mahi mahi instead of the "garbage of the sea" tilapia Jalea - very large portions and cooked to perfection Lomo Saltado - La carne tiene mucho sabor Chicha Morada - homemade, not from a mix. I could taste the maize in the drink Picarones - best dessert ever! The seating area was tastefully decorated, and the ambiance was chill with salsa music playing in the background. Wait staff was very friendly and helpful. It's a little pricey but worth it- you are paying for excellent quality Peruvian food. BTW, my Peruvian wife and mother-in-law absolutely loved it. It's been twice that I've eating at this restaurant, the food does not taste authentic, the cook is forgetting to add salt and ingredients, I ordered a beef chaufa and it needed soy sauce, rice needed to be fried, and I only got 5 little steaks bits. I've also ate tallarines verdes and the taste was off with no salt. I've also eatin the arroz con pollo; total disaster. It was only less than 500 years ago (in 1570) that Potatoes came to Spain (from the Peru region) and then from Spain to the rest of Europe (e.g. Ireland). Clearly a region with an 8000 year old history with Potatoes, knows a thing or two about making mashed potatoes. Causa Limeña De Pollo (Mashed potatoes with chicken, lime, mayonnaise, avocado, and Aji) will surpass all your expectations. Just the presentation is like a work of art. In the central and south America, the Industry Lions, when they entertain their clients (or their Lioness), they invariably go for Peruvian Cuisine. It is an occasion when the Lioness looks at the Lion and like Sally Field says, "He likes me, he really likes me". Keep that in mind when you goto Pisco De Mar (93 River Dr, Garfield, NJ). It is perhaps one of the more expensive Peruvian Restaurant in NJ. Loma Saltado (Marinated strips of sirloin steak stir-fried with soy sauce, chopped red onion, & tomatoes, and served with crispy French fries & rice on the side) is a very typical Peruvian dish. If, you want to know how good Pisco De Mar is, try Loma Saltado there. Or try Causa Ceviche (Mashed Potatoes with raw fish cooked in citrus juices). These two will blow your mind. the food is fine. but the turn-off is the dishonesty. my wife and I had dinner there. the food and service was fine. at the end when I asked for the bill, they automatically added a 20% gratuity but didn't say a word about it. I gave them my credit card and when they came back with the final bill, there is still a line for tip. if not for my careful review, I would have put another 20% tip on that line. We are so glad we chose to eat here. The server Luisa was fantastic. She answered all of our questions with patience, we had a lot. The food was fantastic. She started us with a complimentary cup of soup, and fried corn. Then we had a Shrimp and rice dish with sweet plantains and a skirt steak with pesto linguini. Everything was better than expected. Today The Boys went to Garfield to try Pisco De Mar and are they glad I brought them there. Outstanding Peruvian Restaurant. Big thanks to Karen for taking such good care of us. They have a $12.99 Lunch Menu that's off the charts. The portions are huge and the quality is top of the line. We had Ceviche de Pescado (Bass) and Ceviche de Camaron (Shrimp). You can get the ceviche as your appetizer for $1 more. Enough for a meal. Excellent !!!! I got a few orders of Peruvian Potato Salad for the table. The entrees were huge and delicious !!!! We had Peruvian Fettuccine with Shrimp (Jumping Shrimp), and with Chicken. Fried Fillet of Fish with rice and salad, and Lomo Saltado (Steak). I've grown up in NYC and had an abundance of choices when it comes to Peruvian Food. I moved and could never find anything as close to it in Upstate NY and the NJ area. A fan of this place for authentic peruvian food, service and ambiance. Been there many times and a fan to enjoy fine food. This time around found prices higher and definetly smaller portions for ceviches and chaufas. A bit disappointed this last visit as the higher price points sort of limits the ability to order more dishes. A careful and fine line when owners think they are saving and be cost effective. The end result is going out less, and if going out to dinner w family orders are not as big due to the higher prices and less forget ordering desserts for the table. Food for thought.. I never had Peruvian food before. Yesterday, I was nearby dropping off a rental car, when I saw Pisco de Mar. I went in and decided to have the lunch special at $12.99. My appetizer was Cerviche de Pescado, fish cerviche, which was delicious, fresh fish in a citrusy marinade with two sauces, one of which was spicy. My main course was Tallarin Saltado de Camaron, pasta with shrimp Peruvian style, with onions, scallions, tomatoes and soy sauce. Really good.
