Can't help but think this old-school Polish place is going slowly downhill. Perhaps the changing population and surge of other ethnic restaurants in the area are contributing factors? I don't know but Polonia isn't like it used to be. PROS: Numerous daily specials. Nice waitresses. Good dill pickle soup. CONS: The rye bread tasted stale and was rationed like the Ukrainian army preparing for invasion. In the old days Polonia heaped the rye bread upon the table with real butter, the bread used to be soft in the middle with a hard crunchy crust. Not anymore. When I asked for more bread, the waitress brought precisely one slice in a plastic baggy. This piece tasted stale too. Small pierogi. Really small. Many of the dishes are uninspired. Just glumps of starchy food thrown about the plate covered with gravy. Perhaps that is Polish food in general. Portions much smaller than they used to be. Prices for the general combo plates have hit the $10 and above ranges. The parking lot was a train wreck. BOTTOM LINE: Something was just missing here. Like that special feeling was gone. Polonia serves good food but for the prices charged and portions served, one can find better value in some of the suburban Polish restaurants. After two visits I still have somewhat mixed opinions about Polonia. My first visit we were able to choose the type of sausage on the Polish combo, second visit apparently there were no substitutions of any kind allowed that day, but nowhere on the menu does it specify that the sausage and the combo is fresh only. I prefer the tomato sauce on the stuffed cabbage to be a bit thicker, theirs is watery. Pierogi were fine, I do like the squeeze bottles of sour cream on the tables, very handy. I was disappointed that the only mustard available for the sausage was bright yellow, no coarse brown or anything worthwhile. I do really enjoy the beet salad, the dill pickle soup is good, and my mom really enjoyed the kielbasa sandwich even though she ordered smoked but received fresh. Seating is a mystery. With people waiting inside the door and out, the hostess??/server (blonde woman who seemed to be really upset to be there) had several open tables all around the restaurant, but just ignored the guests lined up and waiting. When the group in front of us asked about the open table that was near the bar which could accommodate their party of four, they were told that it is reserved for the servers...What???? When you're busy with a line out the door you have multiple open tables and you have a table just for the staff? That's an interesting way to run your business. read more

Great food and service! It was my first time here, and it definitely exceeded my expectations. My love and I arrived famished and there was a bit of a wait. We left and walked down the street to see if we could get in faster anywhere else.... which was a no. Came back to no wait and we were seated right away by a very pleasant gentleman. Waitress was right over to get our drinks started. Menu was not overwhelming. In my starving state, I forgot to take pictures of the menu, sorry. I ordered the combo plate. Kraut, sausage, golabki, mashed potatoes and gravy and 2 pierogi. You also got to choose a side of soup (dill pickle or cabbage), cucumber salad or beet something. Also could upgrade the cup of soup to a bowl for $0.50. I chose the dill pickle soup and upgraded it. So glad I did. Best dill pickle soup I have ever had. The sausage, sauerkraut and pierogi were fantastic. Very flavorful. The golabki was ok. The cabbage was a little tough, otherwise great polish food. Casual atmosphere and decent prices. Yesterday was the worst dining experience I have every had. I have been going here 30 years+ and never had such a bad dinner and bad service. Husband and I had the Polish Trio. We could not eat the potato pancakes since they looked and tasted like cotton soaked in grease. I reminded my waitress that we also ordered the chicken wings as an appatizer. Never got them and at the end when we no longer wanted them,since we had finished the edible part of our dinner,she wanted to know if we wanted to take them home. No! We wanted them to start our dinner. Service was horrible...food just as bad and soaked with oil.I asked for the manager and the waitress told me he left for a new keg of beer and no one was there to supervise them.Really? So Good!!! (warrants three exclamation marks) Now, I'm not a real Pole, but I've got enough of it in my blood to have a decent cred with this stuff, and this is what I've been looking for. The Czarnina was better than I'd ever had and- oh the beets! So delicious. There were dishes that my mother said she hadn't had since she was little kid and had forgotten about. Everything was perfect. Comfortable atmosphere- sorta like your grandmothers kitchen. Pork was juicy, pierogis were fried not boiled, beets were sweet vinegary and just firm enough. The service was mediocre, but I can be cajoled into apathy on that front, if there are sweet sword hanging from the walls. Could do without the music but who cares when the food is so good. I love Polish food! I love pierogies! They are one of my favorite comfort foods - if I'm stressed, sad, feel fat, etc. pierogies (good ones) make it all better - except for maybe the feeling fat part, but if they are good, it is worth it. I love Polonus in Wyandotte, and I still think their food is wonderful. I have tried Polish Village before and they are ok - but Polonia deserves the award for best pierogi in Detroit! I took my cousin for a tour of Wayne State's campus since she will be attending in the fall, and then we were trying to figure out where to go to lunch. I first suggested Greektown since she is new to Detroit, and as we were driving around, I remembered how close we were to Hamtramck. (Now, I forgot to tell you, my cousin is from the South and she has a pretty thick southern accent.) She too loves pierogi - only she calls them pie-rogi. So as we were eating our pie-rogies, we couldn't believe how delicious they were. Pan fried potato cheese pie-rogies from Polonia are definately the best in the city! I love the fact that they give you a huge ketchup size bottle of sour cream right on the table - they don't assume you only need a little from a tiny condiment cup - they assume (correctly I might add) that you would like as much sour cream as it takes to enjoy your pie-rogi! We also ordered a meatball each - they are huge so you only need one. It was moist and tender and just plain good. After our wonderful lunch of meatballs and pie-rogies, we were stuffed and happy that we didn't go anywhere else. I am definately a fan of Polonia! read more

Who in the Metro hasn't been tempted to visit Polonia? Especially after their appearance on Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations", this is one place we've been yearning to try for almost a year. Their soups, Dill Pickle and Duck were both tasty. I have to admit neither sounded that appealing to me (especially the duck soup knowing it had duck blood).... but i'm glad I threw caution to the wind and tried them. The polish trio appetizer with pierogies, sausage and potato pancakes was excellent but by the end of it i think it ruined my appetite for the main course. We also ordered the lard which was better spread over the hot pancakes so it melted... eating it cold with the baskets of cold bread just didn't taste right. My beef goulash was UH-MAZE-ING! I wish I had enough room in my tummy to finish it all! The city chicken dinner's looks deceived us, it looked like small portions of chicken on a stick but it actually was a plentiful amount of juicy tender chicken breast. Being such a homely and inviting environment, the staff could stand to be a little less brief. They were really nice and I loved that our food came out real quick, but the waitress was like Road Runner... "beep, beep" and she was off! But hey, if eating tough bread with gritty fat on top of it is your thing, getcho grub on. This place wins on only a few levels: -darkness -fresh in-house made sausage -they accept credit/debit cards I could care less if they're authentic or not (though I question the lauding of a polish place as supremely authentic when they serve TIRAMISU as dessert). Babcia could be running the kitchen and serving up the meals and I'd still favor Polish Village- their quality is more consistent, their flavors more memorable. UNGH. disclaimer: i messed up bad when i came here, i ordered a roast beef sandwich. in a polish restaurant. LET ME EXPLAIN, YELP. i had a lot of travelling to do this day and didn't want to eat a bunch of simple carbohydrates that would have left me sleepy after burning through them. makes sense, right? thanks. so i got my roast beef sandwich. it was QUITE good. beef was a little more cooked than i like it, but it wasn't dry and they gave me plenty of it. mayonnaise was good, too. my friends had two of the polish sampler plates, i think they were called? two pierogis, two potato pancakes, a sausage (kowalski?), and some soup. they had the dill pickle soup and all four of their eyes almost popped out of their heads when they tasted what was going on, lol, too funny. although i don't like pickles i do wish i would have ordered some. i did have a little piece of a potato pancake and was seething with jealousy. yes, they servers are as beautiful as everyone mentioned they are. one of my friends told me the guys in the kitchen were putting their mugs on us the whole time we were eating LOL. i can't imagine these guys' blood pressure if they get heated every time someone looks at them? had a couple of the dessert crepes, as well. do NOT pass these up, they're incredible. two crepes, strawberries, chocolate syup, and creme fraiche. outstanding. i can't wait to come back here!! eric b read more

This having been the place that Anthony Bourdain came when he visited Motor City, I had, needless to say, high expecatiations for the food I would get at Polonia. For the most part, it did not let my expectations down. The dill pickle soup is to.die.for. Smooth and creamy with the perfect amount of dill flavor combined with a cream just heavy enough; it is hard to describe until you've had it. They serve it with optional sour cream, but I say the soup stands well on its own without any sour cream. Polish food is in and of itself, well, not all to excited. It is the essence of meat and potatoes, but that can be done either very well or very wrroonng. Wrong being too fatty, too greasy, too too much. Polonia does a really great job at not overdoing it. Their kielbasa was done perfectly, to where you didn't feel gross having eaten a giant sausage. As for thier pierogis, all be them certainly true to tradition (as familiar as I am with traditional Polish food, which is not very), left me a little dissatisfied. They were decent, but not outstanding. Perhaps it's because most of my pierogi experiences have been "gourmet" ones, so these just seemed lackluster and simple. We got a sweet cheese and a potato, and they tasted just so. Not a deal breaker, but certainly not a deal-maker. Also, got the potato pancakes. Incredible - this time where simple was the star. Needed nothing added to them, perfect in their fried potato-y goodness. All together, Polonia did not let my Anthony-Bourdain-high standards down. The neighborhood is cool (in Hamtramck, which used to be a neighborhood heavily populated by Polish immigrants) and the food is solid. read more

Went here for my first-ever experience with a Polish restaurant. I mainly chose this location over the other big Polish restaurants in Hamtramck due to the fact that it is non-smoking. I started out my meal with a Polish beer called Zwiec, a pale lager that went done easy and was so refreshing for the summertime Before dinner, I had a cup of the dill pickle soup, which I found to be the right combination of dill and pickles (not too dilly, nor was it too briny). I ordered the Polish Trio for dinner, which came with two pierogies, two potato pancakes (they were a little greasy but soooo delicious!) and a link of Polish sausage. Service was prompt and friendly. The ambiance was very authentically Polish....there was Polish folk music playing in the background, and the walls were adorned with pottery. There was also a large mural on one of the walls depicting a bucolic Polish village scene. We topped off our meal with coffee and split a lingonberry crepe (very unique, and an amazing choice for dessert!). I am giving it four stars instead of five simply because I have not tried the other Polish establishments and have nothing to compare it to. This place was a real value, as we had dinner, beer, dessert, and coffee for two people for under $30!! read more

Both offer good food for super cheap, some items are better here or there, but Polinia wins by a HUGE margin when it comes to service, neatness and acceptance of this very rare monetary exchange venue called THE credit card! This restaurant only confirms what I've been suspecting for a while, that Anthony Bourdain isn't all he's cracked up to be. The polish food at Polonia is ok, but certainly not the best in hamtramck. One of my favorite polish foods is the oddly prepared goabki (beef, veal, and rice stuffed in cabbage, fried, and covered with tomato sauce). I like to think of it as the polish burrito. So I ordered the combo plate which came with goabki, kielbasa, saurkraut, and pierogi. I ordered the dill soup with my entree and it was quite tasty. I really prefer a thicker soup and the dill soup had a good texture. The combo plate came out soon after and it looked and tasted overly greasy. The pierogi were just alright, nothing special. But good nalesniki (they must have farmer's cheese!) and pierogi are hard to find, I've really only had good ones from relatives. The goabki was good and kielbasa was alright. The service here was by far the worst out of the three famous Hamtown polish restaurants (Polish Village and Under the Eagle). Eventhough I'm of polish decent why do i always feel like a gringo going these kinds of places? Maybe its because I understand more Japanese and Spanish than Polish... My waitress acted stuck up, did not seem interested in explaning some menu items to me, and never asked me how my meal was or if I wanted any refills on my drinks. Ultimately, the food is probably 4-stars, but I can't stand snobs and the service here was bad. I guess I'll keep going to Polish Village for to get my polska fix. read more

This was my first foray into Hamtramck's Polish food scene, though I've had Polish food many times before, and better Polish food at that. My potato pancakes were ok, and the mushroom crepe special was good, except for the lukewarm cream sauce it was drowning in. The dill pickle soup is 5 star quality. The service was more prompt and friendlier than what I was expecting, but the restaurant was dead 2 hours before closing, and they ended up closing right after we left (1 hour early). If I wanted Eastern European food, I would't refuse to eat here, but I wouldn't choose this place as a first, second, or third option. read more

From homemade fresh polish sausage to great czarnina(duck soup) and out of this world dill pickle soup. The potato pancakes are light and crispy and not greasy. My standby is the polish platter which includes 2 pierogi, fresh sausage, glumki, kapusta, mashed pot and gravy and soup, for only $9. How can you beat that? If my religion were pierogis I would have to admit I would currently be having a crisis of faith. The last dozen times I have had them have left me severely underwhelmed and Polonia's Pierogies are no exception I am afraid. Capitol A average. The funky pseudo sour cream in a refillable condiment bottle is a little off putting too I might add. The polish sausages are nothing to write home about either. The smalec seved with cold stale pre-wrapped bread is a food crime! Served with some piping hot fresh bread it might be good but as is it's like eating Crisco with soggy Bacos on stale shitty bread. Yuck! The dill soup is delicious and I make it a point to get a bowl instead of a cup whenever I go. The Ghoulash on potato pancakes were truly awesome. Not sure why the Hungarian themed dish is the best thing they serve but the rich beefy goulash goes so well with the crispy pancake and it has been a winner every time I have had it. The service always seems to be be somewhere between indifferent and hostile. I have been the only table eating here before and it still took some effort to get the waitress's attention to order more beer and then I got the stink eye for interrupting her book reading. It's worth the occasional visit but it's a shame Polonia is not more of a home run because it really could be if it wanted to. read more

My boyfriend and I tried this place before attending a show at the ANT. We told them we only had 20 minutes to eat and they were able to accommodate us. We both ordered the Polish dinner, which have us a sample of all their tasty food! We started with a cup if their dill soup, which was a new experience for both of us, but it was so yummy! Very rich in flavor and a unique taste! The pierogis were amazing. We both have never had such tasty and perfectly cooked pierogis! The stuffed cabbage was was flavorful and reminded me of home cooking. The mashed potato and Polish sausage were also wonderful! As my boyfriend put it, "I loved everything on that plate." This place is disappointingly average, especially when compared to Polish Village Cafe (just across the parking lot.) The food is fine but tastes very pre-packaged and I suspect their soup is from GFS. The interior is OK and the staff is adequate. I don't have anything particularly negative to say about it, nor do I have anything particularly positive either. I did notice they have a good menu for Seniors here. Anthony Bordaine really screwed up by eating here and not at Polish Village Cafe. read more

I just got back from another visit to Polonia and I am happy to report that the offending canned mixed vegetable side has been replaced with a non-canned variety of broccoli, zucchini, squash, kidney bean & carrot medley. It was seasoned well. My chocolaty, molasses-like Okocim Porter married well with the pork schnitzel and potato dumplings. The slightly caramelized potato dumplings are the bomb-diggity! I've tried the chicken pie there, and was so impressed that I am determined to take the next available Tuesday afternoon off work, in order to take some to my Mom. Dad is hooked on the pork chops -- pounded thin and lightly sauteed so that they do not lose their moisture. I love 'em too, they are my choice on any day BUT Tuesday. The chicken pie probably got on the menu as a result of the soup coming from freshly made chicken stock. You've got to do something with all that boiled meat. It makes me smile inside. The flaky pastry is stuffed full of shredded chicken, with a thin layer of stuffing between the pastry and the meat. They really should not be called pot pies; there are none of the mixed veggies or white sauce one typically sees in a pot pie. The little potato dumplings (I think they're called Kopytka) are almost worth straying to another entree on the menu. Almost, but not quite. :) Get the pork chops with a little wedge of lemon. Heaven! Small banquet facilities are available upstairs. Interesting note: Years ago, the restaurant in this building was something of a socialist cafe. The original white tile walls can still be seen. The original tables were zinc tops. They had the best potato pancakes! And the current restaurant here, Polonia, still has the portrait of FDR hanging up. read more

I have been to polish village several times...and with the general consensus being that it was the better of the 2 major polish players (plus that it feels just like my grandma's basement where my early polish food experiences began) I never felt the need to venture to Polonia. Well flash forward to this Saturday night and the wait for six of us at PV was close to an hour. So we went to Polonia and got right in. I like that Polonia has more space, even if it lacks that grandma's basement authentic charm.... much less claustrophobic. I have to say, while I've definitely always been pleased with PVC's food and flavor, Polonia has the edge. The pierogies were great and pan fried (compared to PVC which seem to be deep fried and not quite as good). The pork chops were pounded thin, well flavored, and had a perfect crunchy texture. The sausage was flavorful, even though it didn't have that full kielbasa flavor, it was still very fresh, well textured, and went perfectly with the kapusta (sauerkraut). The dill pickle soup was not very pickley, but was still very good. City chicken was perfectly cooked and flavored. We tried at least 6 other items, and all were very good The only hiccups... service was a step slow. Took a long time to get a second pitcher of tasty polish beer and I had to have over 1/3 of my meal without it. The dessert crepes were underwhelming. Just a folded crepe with a small scoop of jelly or apple sauce. Stuffing those crepes with the sweet cheese from the pierogies would have been outstanding. And finally, the bacon and pickle appetizer. The pickles were great and the bacon spread was flavorful... but the base seemed to be hardened bacon grease which made it unappealing at least visually. Some people at the table couldn't get over that, but I ate it up. So yeah... the main edge goes to Polonia for basically perfect seasoning with every dish. Polish food can often be underseasoned... but not one bite. And at no point did it think about reaching for salt pepper or asking for hot sauce! read more

Our criteria for dinner last night was easy; inexpensive, good and the availability of beer. This hit all three VERY well! My girlfriend and I both loved the fact that Polonia is a no smoking establishment. The dill pickle soup was good, the white borscht was EXCELLENT and was delivered by the owner. I guess he might have read a few reviews on Yelp! saying the service was occasionally bad because he was very accessible. Terrific Polish food that reminded me of my grandmother's cooking, served by a distractingly pretty waitress. I had the combination plate (two pierogi, stuffed cabbage, sauerkraut, sausage, and mashed potatoes) and a bowl of dill pickle soup. Not a thing was oversalted, and I would put that tomato sauce on just about anything. With the menu, they drop off bread, napkins, silverware, and a big bottle of tap water. That water is a nice touch, because there wasn't much of the unnecessary "How is everything tasting?" dance, and I prefer it that way. read more

Yummy, cozy, hearty Polish cuisine. Dill pickle soup was sour & creamy. Duck soup had a lot of noodles (thick soup) and a little broth (I would have liked more of the bloody broth). The Polish trio was an appetizer style nibble of the sausage, pierogies, and rich buttery potato pancakes! We also ordered the Smalec lard & bacon bread spread, which was real yummy, but the main gripe is that the bread the served was room temperature, which did not mesh with the Smalec as well. Toasted bread would have melted the Smalec so much better! Here's a trick though, spread the Smalec spread on the warm potato pancakes, and it makes it even more yummy & naughty! The dinners came with the small size soups. My city chicken was so tender and was a modest yet filling portion of flavorful pork on 2-skewers. Yes, city "chicken" is actually usually pork. My GF's beef goulash had beef so tender it just fell apart on the fork. Excellent. The entrees had potato and kraut sides as well. Overall an awesome & authentic European experience. While our waitress was a cute, scantily clad Polish gal, admittedly she was rushing through our orders quite fast even though the restaurant wasn't very busy. The hours at Polonia are quite limited, they close at 8pm on slow weeknights, and 9pm on weekend nights - so this is definitely a place to eat dinner at a legitimate time. Were the pierogies a little bigger & more stuffed, the service a little sweeter, and the bread came out toasted with the Smalec - I would have then given this place 5-stars. PIEROGIES!!! Aggghh. I love their pierogies. Their potato pierogies are a MUST experience! They add in bacon & cheese for good measure and serve it with a squirt bottle of sour cream to dose the lovely dumplings in. Ahh, pierogies, they warm my little heart. Between that and the pickle soup, yes pickle soup, I really cannot be swayed with my high opinion of Polonia. They do a stellar job in my two favorite of all Polish concoctions. I'll even ignore that the waitress gave us our bill on post it notes. The pickle soup begs description for those who are not familiar with Polish fare. The pickle flavor is there but not overpowering. The pickles are sliced razor thin, so you taste them but you're not biting into hot pickle chunks. The soup broth has a great mixture of pickled tartness, dill and earthy potato. There's chunks of potato in the soup as well. In addition, I tried their dish called: Jumanji. Sounds exotic, huh? Well it's as Polish as any dish gets here. Smoked Kielbasa, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes in a gravy that is out of this world - sop it up with your bread - GOOD! I have never been anything but full and happy leaving Polonia. Hooray for feeling fat n sassy! Haha. There is something charming about the decor and the staff is undoubtedly 100% Polish. I wouldn't be surprised to walk through the kitchen to see grandma back there cooking up a storm! Go here, you will not, could not be sorry, unless you had your tastebuds removed in some freak accident. I love this place! Far better in my opinion than the joint next door. First of all the surroundings are cute and upbeat with tchotchkes, a wonderful mural, and other sweet decorations. Festive music and lively conversations in Polish fill the air. Fun atmosphere is only the beginning. The food is out of this world and very inexpensive! The czarcie jadlo is a huge potato pancake filled with cheese and mushrooms and covered in a tasty tomato-based sauce. This juicy creation will make your tastebuds sigh in ecstasy! I don't even like dill pickles but their dill pickle soup is heaven. My beloved loves the Hungarian potato pancake, stuffed with beef goulash. Slowly turning one of many large chunks of meat around on his fork, he remarked that this meal "is the perfect thing for any red-blooded guy." Even our sundae was very flavorful with whipped cream, chocolate sauce, and a delicious cherry-flavored liquid at the bottom. The waitresses are sweet and efficient, and I've always known them to dress and act appropriately. The guy cooking was pleasant, the place very clean. We always leave delighted at our food and experience here. My only complaint is that they close a bit early-8 on weeknights and 9 Fridays and Saturdays. read more

Good, not great. The goulash is quite tasty, with thick homemade noodles. The dill pickle soup is not dill pickle-ish enough. The potato pancakes -- my test at Polish restaurants -- are a bit heavy. Not bad in a pinch, but for a better Polish experience, I suggest Under the Eagle. read more
