I am, by profession, an estate liquidator. In my line of work, one frequently needs to scrap gold jewelry and silver items that have low-desirability in an estate sale, items that simply did not sell when they were offered, or ones that are damaged. Before I discovered Oxbridge Coins (now Polyak Precious Metals), my usual way of dealing with these was to sell them to a private buyer of scrap precious metals, with whom we did business for about 12 years. However, we would get only 75% of the scrap value of gold, and 60% of silver (he had to make a profit too), which meant that our clients (usually family members of the decedent) would only get 50% of the scrap value, since we also took a percentage of the sale. And although we trusted our buyer, we could not verify that he was accurate. And in order to try to determine the metal content of an object, if it was unmarked or dubious, I had to use acid tests, magnets, and a lot of guesswork. That all changed when I discovered Oxbridge in 2015. Soon I was bringing all of my precious metal scrap to Roy, Boris and the other good folks there, and getting a considerably higher percentage of the scrap value, which meant that our clients also got more. Not only are the staff honest and professional, but they have often gone out of their way to advise me on items that I was unsure of. They have an XRF spectrometer gun that can instantly and accurately assay the metal content of any object; a device that costs a minimum of $15,000 (putting it out of reach of people like me). They have used it to determine that items I brought in which were marked as gold were actually plated, items that I thought were silver were actually platinum or palladium, and even that a 1 oz. medallion in an estate, which I presumed was plated, was actually solid 24kt gold (it sold at auction for $2,400!) Having done business with Oxbridge/PPM for 6 years now, I have the utmost trust in them, and satisfaction in all of our dealings. I recently had a stellar experience working with Boris at his family's precious metals shop. I wanted to sell several gold Maple Leaf and Krugerrand coins, a half bag of 'junk silver coins', as well as a number of miscellaneous coins of various values. Boris could not have been better to work with. He was consistently informative and a pleasure to interact with. He explained his fee structure, and we quickly agreed on what I felt was an excellent price for the Gold. Then with great time and patience, he and his cousin Roy, counted the very heavy bags comprising the $500 face value of the junk silver, which included half dollars, quarters and 2500 dimes! We agreed on what I felt was also an excellent price for the silver, and then on the miscellaneous coins. Throughout what was at least an hour to 90 minutes of focused attention to me, Boris kept a detailed list of all I was selling and the associated price to be paid. At the end of the counting and valuation, Boris added up all I was selling and the prices to be paid to me. He then cut me check for the total, which has been deposited and cleared. I left the shop feeling so pleased with my experience...patient explanations of the value of what I had brought in, what I felt was an excellent pricing structure, Boris' attentiveness and his enjoyable interaction style...and above all, I felt at all times he was honest with me, which is so important in these types of transactions. Roy was very professional and efficient (maybe just a little too -- I would have preferred a more thorough explanation of how the process works, calculating the weight and worth of the different kinds of gold, etc., but that's on me to research, I guess, and a quick and no-nonsense business exchange over a potentially emotional process was probably for the best). He even offered me a little money for a not very good quality diamond in an old ring that another place said would just be melted down, which I found odd. Also, unlike the other place, where I didn't see what the fancy metal detector was reading, he tilted the screen of the device forward each time so that, had I known what I was looking for , I could have confirmed his numbers. I also like that there appear to be safeguards in place such and fingerprinting and ID checking. All in all, I felt positive about the experience and will likely go back. I went to this shop after getting 2 appraisals. This guy after telling him I used to work at a coin store. And I knew what my items were worth. Most people think if the get 50% of the value that's great. But when it comes to gold and silver. Most buyers ROB you. I was taught if any weight said it was more than the gram wieght, even if its a point shy of being anther gram, tell them its less. This loser of a business man offered less than a 3rd of the value on the first item out of 4. I told him I'm not stupid. He shows his thumb and forefinger pinched together and said he's only trying to make a SMALL profit. What a JOKE. I was trying to help a small bussiness. But found a man robbing people. And I live accross the street.. I'm the only one to visit in the last month. And I've kept video of out side my window for the last year. Very few come into his store. Many leave with the same bag they came in with. I think ill call the mayors office to ha e them checked out. How can they pay rent + and have no income?????And they say Boris knows his stuff!
