Lovely wines here at Pomum Cellars. It's located at the very end of Artisan Hill and when I say the very end, I mean, you turn where it doesn't look like there aren't any tasting rooms but yes, it's there. It's a hidden gem. My friend and I came here on a Sunday during our wine tasting day. We walked in and were able to be seated immediately, which was nice, since they only allow walk-ins. Reservations are not taken. The space inside was beautiful too. I really liked the style, as it had an industrial and modern feel to it. The tasting included four wines: chardonnay, tempranillo, syrah and cab sauv. All of the wines were solid. I don't usually like white wines, but the chardonnay was a nice surprise, as it wasn't as sweet as I thought it would be. It had a buttery flavor to it, which would go perfect with pasta. All of the reds were great, but I liked the cab sauv the best. It had great balance, but was robust enough. I'm glad we discovered Pomum Cellars as this was our first time here. Dogs are also welcomed and they provide treats! Pomum really is a hidden gem in the area, which is worth finding. read more

FANTASTIC! It is so hard to find a winery that has amazing reds and whites but this place knocked it out of the park. As someone who works in the industry myself, I love to go try other places and this place EXCEEDS the bar. I prefer whites but their Syrah and Temp were to die for. Cool/fun atmosphere the the tasting room staff are amazing. I think this is my newest favorite and I have already told many to folks to go there. I'm delighted to be the first person to post Pomum Cellars. As a wine steward and buyer for VinElla of Woodinville, I taste more thah 2,000 wines every year and, believe me, it ain't as much fun as you'd think. In one day, about six months ago in Seattle, I tasted 422 wines. Folks, it was WORK. And I wound up buying four for the shop. FOUR. And that's about the average. So, on a Saturday morning, back in May of '07, I was driving along Woodinville-Duvall Road when I saw a sign for a winery I had never heard of: Pomum Cellars. I drove past, at first, but came back later out of curiosity. I went to the tasting room - right next door to Chatter Creek Winery in a Woodinville office/industrial park - and went in. They had two wines; a big, silky Syrah and a blend of all five Bordeaux grapes called "Shya". I tasted the Syrah first and was floored by how inky and delicious it was. But the Shya...Man! I had trouble getting the aromas because of some food in the room, so I took the glass out to the parking lot and spent a good ten minutes smelling and tasting it, telling myself, "No, it's NOT that good. It can't possibly be THAT good." But it was. And, a year later, it's even better! Folks, Javier Alfonso, Pomum winemaker and son of a long-time grape-growing family in Spain's Ribera del Duero, has crafted one of the top five wines I've tasted from Washington in the past two years. With all due respect to the Quilceda Creek 100-Point Cabs, the best wines I tasted from this state in '07/'08 were Bob Betz's "Pere de Famille" and "La Serenne" and...Pomum Shya. It's THAT good. And, even before I met Javier, I thought Shya tasted very, well, Spanish. It has that beautiful, pure fruit profile, artfully married to incredible terroir notes that you find in the great Spanish wines, and - though it will age beautifully for at least ten years - is amazingly drinkable NOW. I promise you, friends, this is a winery you will eventually count among the top four or five in Washington, and you'd do well to discover it now, while you can still get some of this gorgeous, small-production juice. read more

It's neither possible nor right to talk about Pomum without talking about its remarkable second label, Idilico. Both are the children of Javier Alfonso, Spaniard and all around excellent winemaker. Through Pomum Javier crafts and releases an outstanding line of wines made from the sorts of grapes that you find in most Washington wineries, but Idilico is all about using the Spanish varietals that grow so well in Washington State. Starting with Pomum, there's usually a Riesling leading the tasting. The partner and I have tried several vintages and this wine, like all Pomum wines, is pretty dependable in style no matter what the year. Expect a very dry style with big fruit and mineral flavors. A recent addition to the tasting menu is a Chardonnay that shows excellent balance between vanilla and cream notes from lees aging and citrus from the grape. The reds will include a Tempranillo (pro tip: if asked whether it tastes like it's made in the Ribera del Duero style or the Rioja style, always say the former) and a Syrah, both terrific examples of their varietals. Finally, the tasting will end with the remarkable Shya. Shya is a red blend that varies in composition from vintage to vintage but always shows off Javier's skill as a blender. The 2012 is Cab Sauv dominated (I think around 85%) and is chock full of flavor with great balance between tannin and acid and all the chops needed to age a while. How about Idilico? Well, this is a second label, so the full line typically isn't available for tasting (though wine club members have a little pull in this regard), but if you can score a tasting, do so by all means. Representing whites they make an Albariño, and the reds include a Monastrell (a.k.a. Mourvèdre to the francophone), a Tempranillo and the best example of single varietal Grenache in Washington State (especially the 2013). Those are all great, but if you want great plus intriguing, Idilico has you covered with a Graciano. Usually used as a blending grape with Tempranillo in Spain, this little number is tannic and bold and is going to be amazing after a few years in the bottle (If you want to drink it now, pro tip number two: give it lots of air). There's also a "Roble," in this case a Tempranillo/Graciano blend with just a little time on oak that's accessible and easy to drink right now. I love both these labels, but I have to confess a certain weakness for the Spanish grape, so I try to pick up some Idilico whenever I can. Great wine aside, Javier has always hired great people to work in the tasting room. Mark, the previous tasting room host, was funny, personable and knowledgeable, and the current hostess, Kate, is an absolute delight. So at Pomum, you'll always taste the grape while in excellent hands. Bottom line: Check these folks out as soon as you can and be sure to taste everything that's put in front of you. read more
