    Cuban Sandwich
    Abbey S.

We came to Poor Richard's twice on vacation because it was so good. The first time we had a Cuban with pasta salad and a hot Italian sub with fries. They were all amazing, especially the hot Italian. The second time we got an angry burger and a cold Italian sub. We agreed that the hot Italian was better than the cold Italian, but it was still really tasty. The angry burger was awesome! I loved the flavor combination and it was a great size for the price. Their French fries are also super good! The staff is very friendly. Wait times can sometimes be long when they're busy but it's worth it!

Food is meh, little value for the money and don't try to customize. Exactly what you expect of a resort deli. It's adequate but that's at its best, the cucumber salad was very good.

Excellent service, food served hot and fast. Great pub atmosphere, even an area to sit outside. Daily specials, good beer selection. Close quarters, get to know your neighbors!!

The food was delicious. Service was great, you order at the counter and they bring to order to you. It was very busy at lunchtime, small but looks like it has additional space for the dinner/evening crowd. Has outdoor seating that we could bring our dog. Waterfront from back deck.

Still so good! We visited three times during our trip. Over the three visits we got the Greek wrap, the Rockfish wrap, the Tuna Melt on Rye, the Beef Philly, the Sailor Sandwich, the Shrimp Burger (daily special), the Italian Sub, the Pulled Pork sandwich, and the Crab Cake sandwich, and a Hot Dog with mustard. For sides we had fries, chips, artichoke pasta salad, potato salad, and the cucumber salad. We also had the cookies. Everything we've had has been delicious!!! I cannot emphasize enough how good and fresh all of the food is, and they do not skimp. It is my favorite restaurant on the Outer Banks, and has become a tradition for my family! I still highly recommend.

We had a good experience at Poor Richard's on our first visit. We had a nice gift card to burn so ordered our meals and some additional sandwiches for carryout to have for dinner. The soup of the day was New England Clam Chowder. It was served piping hot and was very good. So many places over-thicken chowder with flour and make it pasty. This was not that way; it was creamy and delicious. I had planned to get their daily special sandwich of Grilled Pastrami with Cheese. I talked myself out of that when I saw they serve Boar's Head meats. (more on that later) We both ordered The Angry Burger from the specialty sandwich menu, and these were also very good. They were half pound and were served with a generous dollop of homemade pimento cheese, bacon and pickled chiles Jalapeños. The beef had a good flavor, maybe needing a pinch of salt, but all-in-all this was excellent. We each took half home, since we are past the stage of eating half-pounders. We both had potato salad for our side. We were glad we had the good chowder because the potato salad is not something I would order again. The potato chunks were way too large, the potato was mealy, and the dressing was bland and tasteless. All it takes to improve this is to cut the potatoes smaller and dress them with vinegar while still warm, then add your mayo dressing. Thankfully it was not loaded with onion. For our carryout we ordered from the cold menu; one ham and one turkey breast. These seemed overpriced for what they were. There was less than 4 oz of meat on each. $12 for a lunchmeat sandwich is a bit much. I am not a fan of Boar's Head. It is ubiquitous and not particularly good. For items like the ham and turkey it is okay, but I know from experience that the pastrami and corned beef are not delicatessen grade. They have tried to be all things, have driven the smaller producers of good grade meats out of the market, and are producing mass quantities of mediocre products. I can show you a gas station that features their meats. So, I was disappointed to find them at Poor Richard's. I heartily recommend Poor Richard's but advise sticking with the specialty menu to avoid the Boar's Head stuff. If you like Boar's Head products, just go to any market that sells them and make a much less expensive sandwich at home.

We arrived at 12pm and the line was out the door. It took roughly 15-20 minutes to get to the front and right as we did we saw a sign that said they ran out of fries and onion rings. Not ideal at all since we were with a 4 year old. After we placed our order we noticed several of the sodas from the soda fountain were also all out. I'm not sure if we arrived after the lunch rush or if they just didn't anticipate so many people on a rainy day. I ended up ordering the pastrami and cheese sandwich which was a 5/5 but the side of chips were just alright. My wife ordered the tuna salad sandwich and really enjoyed it too. Her side of potato salad was much more enjoyable. Since the restaurant was so crowded we ended up eating outside under the covered patio. The tables and chairs were soaked so it took us a full roll of paper towels to get everything dry. It's interesting that they keep these seats open all year round but no patio heaters are present. All in all the food is here is great but the logistics leave much to be desired.

Busy Friday in March! Streets are vacant! We shared a warm Italian sun with fries ! Very good but greasy! Very local feel!

This was a great sandwich shop! My family was out Christmas shopping when we found Poor Richards. We were looking at the board out front when a passerby stopped and told us to definitely eat there. We were sold. There's a menu board right inside where you wait in line (if there is one, there was for us) and choose what you'd like. You order and pay at the register, and then seat yourself. They call your number on your ticket when your food is ready. I got the crab cake sandwich which was a 10/10. Really great. The crab was lump and it wasn't all filling, which happens sometimes with crab cakes. I finished most of my sandwich, but it was a pretty big portion. I also had the cucumber salad which was really good. I could've eaten more if I had room! Everyone else liked their order, too. No complaints at my table. We'd definitely return when we're in the area!

Stopped in here to check out "Poor Rudolfs" for the holiday season. This place is extremely small. They had live music going on, but it was honestly too much for such a small place. I think someone with a guitar would be fine, but they had a whole drum set up. The food was okay. I got the Cali wrap, but it was all meat. It needed lettuce or something. The sausage balls weren't good. The service was fine. Overall, I'd say 3.5 stars? Not my favorite.

We liked Olives so much, we dined here twice in the same week…read more I recently visited the Outer Banks for a week with my wife and we stayed in Manteo. Prior to arriving in town, I had made a reservation for dinner at Olives for later in the week. The day we arrived, after we unpacked and settled into our rental, we decided to take a walk to explore as we were staying in town. We happened to walk past Olives and decided to look at the menu - and that made us want to go there that night as we did not make any plans that evening and didn't want to get back in the car. I spoke with someone at the host stand and made a reservation for us. I figured I could cancel the reservation for later in the week after we had dinner. (Spoiler: We decided to keep the other reservation.) The food and the service were both excellent. The first night, I had the tri-tip souvlaki which was a special and my wife had the chicken souvlaki from the regular menu. We started with an order of the dolmas and they might be my new favorite. We both enjoyed our dinner and a nice booth with a view of the marina. We ordered a piece of the baklava to go. The second visit, we started with the hummus appetizer and I had the Keftedes and my wife ordered the gyro. The keftedes was so delicious with the tomato-based sauce. Luckily I had some pita to dip in that sauce. My wife enjoyed the gyro and I enjoyed the bite I got to try. The restaurant has a few greek wines on their menu but not a lot of selection. The restaurant is on the smaller side but they do have a few tables outside in the courtyard which in the nice weather is a good option and helps with capacity. I do recommend having a reservation, though. Everyone of the staff were friendly and welcoming. Special thanks to Topanga for giving us some great tips on places to visit in the OBX.

Unfortunately, the restaurant had already sold out of one of its signature dishes, moussaka, even though the owner had enthusiastically recommended it while speaking with us at our table. The suggested substitute, pastitsio, did not meet expectations. The béchamel layer was sparse and lacked the rich, creamy character that defines the dish, and the ziti pasta appeared to have been overcooked (even for a casserole) during reheating of a pre-prepared serving. One aspect of the meal left me puzzled. Why serve Greek rice alongside a dish that already contains plenty of starch? Greek cuisine offers so many wonderful vegetable accompaniments that would have provided better balance and showcased the flavors of the region, including fasolakia, briam, yemista, gigantes plaki, or kolokithakia tiganita. On the positive side, the staff remained attentive throughout our meal, kept our water glasses full, and genuinely tried to accommodate us. However, they did not seem fully familiar with which menu items were available (wait staff need to check the 86 board before and during service!). Several tables offer pleasant views overlooking the park and wharf, which adds to the atmosphere. I also would have enjoyed seeing more of the classic blue-and-white décor that evokes the charm of a seaside taverna in Greece. Overall, the restaurant has potential, but the execution of the food and the dining experience fell short of the expectations created by the menu and the recommendations.

Normally it's the location in Nags Head or if we're down south then Morehead City but the JM website said there was a location in Manteo so we made the trip over. Very easy to find in Manteo as the store is right by a laundromat and the old Piggly Wiggly. Not tons of parking, but it was good enough for 7pm on a weeknight. (Note that currently if you just type in Jersey Mike's Manteo on Google, the map pin is in the wrong location. Going through JM's website to a Google Map will equal the correct store location). If you've ever been to a JM's then you know that your place your order, any cold subs are more or less made right away and then for something hot you wait until it's done since everything is made to order. I order a #7 (Turkey & Provolone) and the Old Lady orders a #43 (Chipotle Cheese Steak) with a request to really grill the peppers and onions. My sub is more or less ready within a few minutes. Her sub...not so much. Working backwards, the store had just opened a little more than a week prior and aside from two people working from I assume the Nags Head location, everyone else was new and the tickets/orders were all over the place. Website, phone and in person stuff for hot orders were backed up all over the place with several people hanging out waiting for orders. After about twenty minutes, a member of the staff asked what we were waiting for and realized they gave my wife's sub to someone else picking up a take out order. Whatever. After a few minutes the correct order was fired up and all things were good. No issue with the cleanliness of the store as two members of staff (they had a lot of people working that night) were cleaning things the entire time we were there and no issues with the food quality. Sure, the long wait was a PIA but afterwards there was more apologizing than necessary and all was good.
