Fish Heads is a true oceanfront dining experience since you're actually dining out on the pier. The wait can be long, especially with larger groups. I've been here with a party of 12 before, and we definitely waited a while, but I was impressed that they were able to accommodate a group that size. This time, I was with a party of two and we were seated pretty quickly. My one complaint about the wait system is that they announce when your table is ready, but if you're out of earshot, you'll miss it. It would be nice if they used a text, call, or buzzer system so you could walk down to the beach while you wait. Part of the pier seating is covered, but the farther you go out, the more exposed you are. We were seated near the end, so it was hot in the direct sun and very windy. But that comes with the territory, and the views make it worth it. There are also plenty of birds hoping you'll share your fries with them, which is both expected and pretty funny. We each ordered a Pain Killer. It was good at first, but it quickly became watered down, and I didn't think it was worth $10. We also got the nachos, but the price adds up quickly once you start adding toppings. Most of the menu is very à la carte. The prices seem reasonable at first, but sides and toppings can add up fast. The burgers don't come with fries, for example. We both got the West Coast Burger. It was good, but nothing particularly memorable. Service was attentive and generally friendly. Overall, Fish Heads is one of the better dining options in the area. The pier setting and views really make the experience unique. I enjoy coming here and will likely be back. read more

One of the few ocean view restaurants with a pier, its a cool experience but a bit off the main beach road. No other retail / restaurant for a few miles, so this place seems always packed. Drink selection was good, view is great, service is good but too packed for me. Did not try food, saw appetizers moving quickly but they did not look good. Stopped by Fri late afternoon for late lunch around 2PM and the parking lot was packed with cars parking roadside. I was surprised when to see plenty of seating available on the patio. Guess many of the cars were for people on the beach. First beer I ordered...they didn't have. However, they still had plenty of options. I came for Fish Tacos and they had Wicked Tuna Tacos available ($19) and they were excellent. My bride ordered the tradtional Fish Tacos and added pickled red onions and cilantro lime alioli on the side ($19) and enjoyed them. The food came out FAST. Almost immeditately. Thinking they were staffed for a much bigger turnout. Service from Zoe was super friendly and attentive. Wow do I love this spot. Located in the gorgeous Nags Head Outer Banks, this restaurant has it all. They are the perfect spot if you want to get a nice drink with ocean views or if you want to get lunch or dinner. The staff is friendly and the food is so good. This was a great spot on the pier to eat and drink with our dogs, who are allowed in the outdoor seating area. It is literally right above the beach with great views of the ocean. Really great vibes and food! Bathroom located outside the restaurant given the restaurant is physically on the pier. It took a while for my sour cream to come (actually everyone in my party finished their food before I got it), but our waitress was EXTREMELY kind and offered a drink for us on the house. This place was nearby Jeanette's pier (which was our next stop) so we stopped by for a bite to eat. We were seated right away and the service was good. It was too windy for me... but that's not a fault of the establishment... the food came out super fast and was tasty. The fries here are bombbbbb (they get cold fast cause of the wind so gobble them up quick!) our server was so thoughtful she brought a tasty of their new sour since most people didn't like it... and she was right it wasn't our jam so we opted for a different drink! Talk about great service! The views from the seat and pier were great! We saw some surfers, families along the beach, and some people fishing! Definitely a place for the locals but if you are able to journey out to this hidden gem you're in luck! Such a fun and unique waterfront spot in southern nags head. While you wait for your table there's a bar and patio with picnic benches at the front you can sit and wait at with a drink. Once you're brought back, you enter this pier space with dining tables and a large bar along with flags, koozies, street signs, and funny license plates on the ceiling. Pretty large menu with lots of seafood offerings and drinks. Definitely more of a fun atmosphere to grab drinks and maybe some apps and sit on the pier and watch the ocean. The atmosphere is a 10/10. One of the biggest perks is being able to eat your meal out on the pier. They also have live music and a very family-friendly environment. We waited about 40 minutes on a Friday evening during a holiday weekend, which I thought was completely reasonable. While you wait, there's an outdoor bar where you can grab a drink, along with plenty of outdoor seating. We started with a half-pound of steamed shrimp as an appetizer. They were fresh and well-seasoned, but they were slightly overcooked, which made them a little harder to peel. For my entrée, I ordered the fried fish platter. The fish itself was good, but the breading was much thicker than I expected almost like a hush puppy batter. It also had a noticeably almost overwhelming sweet flavor than any other fried fish I've had, which wasn't my preference and brought my rating down to a 3/5. My fiancée ordered the coconut shrimp platter and rated it a 6/10. She felt the shrimp didn't taste as fresh as the rest of the food. Overall, if you're looking for a great place to spend time with family or friends, this is definitely worth visiting. The atmosphere alone makes it an enjoyable experience. If you're searching for the best seafood in the area, though, this may not be your top choice. It's possible I ordered the wrong item, or the holiday weekend affected the food quality. Still, I think fried fish should be one of the safest menu items at any seafood restaurant, so take that for what it's worth. read more

This was our first and most certainly not our last time eating at Fish Heads. We got our food to go but had to go inside to pick it up, and wow! This place has an incredible vibe and even better view of the water. It was very busy and you could tell it is loved by both tourists and locals. Despite how busy they were, the staff were very friendly and attentive. We got an order of coconut shrimp, fish tacos, shrimp basket (with sweet potato fries), and fish basket (with sweet potato fries). It was all delicious!!! Firstly, they do not skimp on portion size. The fish and shrimp were all fresh and full of flavor. The coconut shrimp was the best I've had, and I love that they have sweet potato fries as an option. Rudest hostesses you'll ever meet. They act like they're 12 years old, I get better customer service at a McDonalds. I understand it's a busy place and throughout waiting an hour and 20 mins we asked twice politely where we were in line. They said there's 5 parties in front of us but 4 because they'll sit us before a party of 10. Then they proceeded to call the party of 10. When they finally called us they laughed at us. You're two grown woman, we did nothing wrong, act your age and polite especially because it's your job to. I also overheard them talk about another party stating "if they don't leave show them the parking lot," then fake strangled their neck. If you don't like your job then quit! Quintessential beach spot. Oceanfront with a pier for fishing. Wide selection of beers for all palates. The wicked tuna tacos (weekends) are the best fish tacos I've ever had. Tuna caught locally, so fresh and delicious sauce. Nightly music is good, we sit at the bar and enjoy the atmosphere. It gets busy, so i can see impatient folks not enjoying wait. No, they don't have cocktails, but they have tons of beers on tap, seltzers, cider, and you can get sangria, Prosecco, and margaritas on tap. Side salad, taco bowl, and happy hour shrimp were the best items. Fried fish was too sweet, sweet potato fries were overcooked, and the crab cake lacked flavor. The crab cake did have the perfect texture and ample salad to accompany it. Drinks: good flavor, limited options, mainly beer. I liked the agave margarita and pain killuh. We ordered drinks at the outdoor bar while waiting for our table. The bartender was efficient. Prices: reasonable prices for a seafood restaurant in OBX, but with lots of upcharges. Most of the upcharges are listed on the menu. Some we did not realize until paying the check. For instance, one member of our party is gluten free. Fish heads only has a couple gluten free items and use flour tortillas for the tacos. Therefore, we ordered the tacos over rice, blackened, and with guacamole. The upcharges for blackened and guacamole were expected. Then the rice was $2 (even though it replaced the tortillas). Plus remoulade sauce was an extra charge. One of our party didn't receive the toppings that originally came with the item, but was charged extra for asking for remoulade sauce. Location: excellent, you dine right on the pier with beautiful views of the ocean. Plan to bring sunscreen or cover up since you may be seated in the sun. Also some of the benches open up to the water so made sure phones, purses, and other items are secure. Service: okay, they are usually busy so you may need to ask for water refills and forgotten items. Our waitress was nice and our food came out quickly. Parking: deep, thin parking lot located in front of the restaurant. This lot fills up quickly and is challenging to turn around in. Public beach access parking lot adjacent is also usually full. Coming to eat or to be eaten alive? My gosh... the mosquitoes here were insufferable. Went here on a Friday evening. The place was packed and we were given an estimated 45 minute wait but were seated in 25. We walked the pier and watched the folks fishing prior to being seated, which was a nice pass time. The whole space was kind of shack style where there was roofing but no windows closing you in. Mosquitos were just going to town on all the diners. While this in itself was a bother, the wait staff's reactions were what were more disappointing. We asked if we could get bugs spray to which our server said they could not provide any. Yet the table next to us received bug spray from their server. When we went to apply the bug spray, staff told us to spray it elsewhere while the other party at the table over was not given any instruction to do so even as they applied bug spray within the establishment and the mist did spread. Finally our server profusely apologized to the table next to us for the bug situation when they were leaving but completely ignored us when we were on our way out. Anyone paying attention could notice the difference in treatment... pretty blatant racism in my view and definitely would not support dining at this establishment. Food was also not good - on its own it would be a 2.5/5 at best. I tried the fish tacos. The tortillas were not warmed, the pico de gallo was just chopped veggies and not a salsa at all, and the fish was far over salted and extremely oily. Came with a side of rice which was dry, hard, and unseasoned. There were a lot of positives here and a few negatives but overall it's a solid restaurant! Positives: shrimp happy hour is a great deal! Super messy but wonderful for the price. I got a crab cake sandwich with non of the toppings but asked for sauce on the side and it was $2, which is ridiculous. The crab cake was good but was pretty small for what it should have been on the sandwich and was cooked pretty dark. Ambiance and view were great! Server could've been a little friendlier but definitely wasn't rude. My steamed shrimp looked like someone accidentally dropped the old bay seasoning all over them. It was ridiculous. I asked for melted butter and got liquid butter. The kind you put on popcorn at the movie theater. My mom had a burger which she said was good. And the sweet potato fries were ok.
