One of the few ocean view restaurants with a pier, its a cool experience but a bit off the main beach road. No other retail / restaurant for a few miles, so this place seems always packed. Drink selection was good, view is great, service is good but too packed for me. Did not try food, saw appetizers moving quickly but they did not look good. Stopped by Fri late afternoon for late lunch around 2PM and the parking lot was packed with cars parking roadside. I was surprised when to see plenty of seating available on the patio. Guess many of the cars were for people on the beach. First beer I ordered...they didn't have. However, they still had plenty of options. I came for Fish Tacos and they had Wicked Tuna Tacos available ($19) and they were excellent. My bride ordered the tradtional Fish Tacos and added pickled red onions and cilantro lime alioli on the side ($19) and enjoyed them. The food came out FAST. Almost immeditately. Thinking they were staffed for a much bigger turnout. Service from Zoe was super friendly and attentive. If you want music and either wine or a beer this is the place to go. Right on the ocean with a cool breeze and even cooler sounds. Our waitress was friendly and able to split the bill into 4 different checks. I shared the burger and load fries which both were good. I did have a bite of the tuna which wasn't bad but not good either. read more

This was a great spot on the pier to eat and drink with our dogs, who are allowed in the outdoor seating area. It is literally right above the beach with great views of the ocean. The food was also incredible. Servers were amazing (several of them stopped by our table to say hi to our huge dogs). read more

This is definitely one of the more happening locations in OBX. Always high energy, the staff are all very friendly and talkative. The food is also great all around. Highly recommend if you're looking for a good drink on the pier as well. You can go from the beach to the restaurant easily too! Parking is a bit rough but somehow everyone makes do! read more

The atmosphere is a 10/10. One of the biggest perks is being able to eat your meal out on the pier. They also have live music and a very family-friendly environment. We waited about 40 minutes on a Friday evening during a holiday weekend, which I thought was completely reasonable. While you wait, there's an outdoor bar where you can grab a drink, along with plenty of outdoor seating. We started with a half-pound of steamed shrimp as an appetizer. They were fresh and well-seasoned, but they were slightly overcooked, which made them a little harder to peel. For my entrée, I ordered the fried fish platter. The fish itself was good, but the breading was much thicker than I expected almost like a hush puppy batter. It also had a noticeably almost overwhelming sweet flavor than any other fried fish I've had, which wasn't my preference and brought my rating down to a 3/5. My fiancée ordered the coconut shrimp platter and rated it a 6/10. She felt the shrimp didn't taste as fresh as the rest of the food. Overall, if you're looking for a great place to spend time with family or friends, this is definitely worth visiting. The atmosphere alone makes it an enjoyable experience. If you're searching for the best seafood in the area, though, this may not be your top choice. It's possible I ordered the wrong item, or the holiday weekend affected the food quality. Still, I think fried fish should be one of the safest menu items at any seafood restaurant, so take that for what it's worth. read more

This place was nearby Jeanette's pier (which was our next stop) so we stopped by for a bite to eat. We were seated right away and the service was good. It was too windy for me... but that's not a fault of the establishment... the food came out super fast and was tasty. The fries here are bombbbbb (they get cold fast cause of the wind so gobble them up quick!) our server was so thoughtful she brought a tasty of their new sour since most people didn't like it... and she was right it wasn't our jam so we opted for a different drink! Talk about great service! The views from the seat and pier were great! We saw some surfers, families along the beach, and some people fishing! Definitely a place for the locals but if you are able to journey out to this hidden gem you're in luck! Such a fun and unique waterfront spot in southern nags head. While you wait for your table there's a bar and patio with picnic benches at the front you can sit and wait at with a drink. Once you're brought back, you enter this pier space with dining tables and a large bar along with flags, koozies, street signs, and funny license plates on the ceiling. Pretty large menu with lots of seafood offerings and drinks. Definitely more of a fun atmosphere to grab drinks and maybe some apps and sit on the pier and watch the ocean. This was our first and most certainly not our last time eating at Fish Heads. We got our food to go but had to go inside to pick it up, and wow! This place has an incredible vibe and even better view of the water. It was very busy and you could tell it is loved by both tourists and locals. Despite how busy they were, the staff were very friendly and attentive. We got an order of coconut shrimp, fish tacos, shrimp basket (with sweet potato fries), and fish basket (with sweet potato fries). It was all delicious!!! Firstly, they do not skimp on portion size. The fish and shrimp were all fresh and full of flavor. The coconut shrimp was the best I've had, and I love that they have sweet potato fries as an option. Came here on a saturday at rush hour and was told there was an hour wait so we put our names down and played on the beach. Ended up only having to wait 25 mins! Service was extremely friendly and quick. Love the pier and watching everyone fishing. Live music was so fun and added to the vibes. Food portions were very good and reasonably priced and flavorful. I usually never expects restaurants on a pier to be good, but that changed once I ate here. Fish Heads was amazing. I loved the atmosphere, the music, the oceanfront view. And don't forget the shrimp which is 20 cents during certain hours, it was DELICIOUS. I also ordered the fish basket and it was quite tasty. The service was also very well and she made sure we always had refills. My only complaint about this place was the water was a little weird tasting and there were a lot of flies and bugs near our table. After I apologized to my stomach for hyping her up to be let down but I will be back on a Wednesday next time. TLDR: Beautiful view, decent food, and okay service. Be weary of upcharges. Often busy so arrive early. We arrived around 4:30 pm and a table for 8 took about 20 min. Food: Okay food. Side salad, taco bowl, and happy hour shrimp were the best items. Fried fish was too sweet, sweet potato fries were overcooked, and the crab cake lacked flavor. The crab cake did have the perfect texture and ample salad to accompany it. Drinks: good flavor, limited options, mainly beer. I liked the agave margarita and pain killuh. We ordered drinks at the outdoor bar while waiting for our table. The bartender was efficient. Prices: reasonable prices for a seafood restaurant in OBX, but with lots of upcharges. Most of the upcharges are listed on the menu. Some we did not realize until paying the check. For instance, one member of our party is gluten free. Fish heads only has a couple gluten free items and use flour tortillas for the tacos. Therefore, we ordered the tacos over rice, blackened, and with guacamole. The upcharges for blackened and guacamole were expected. Then the rice was $2 (even though it replaced the tortillas). Plus remoulade sauce was an extra charge. One of our party didn't receive the toppings that originally came with the item, but was charged extra for asking for remoulade sauce. Location: excellent, you dine right on the pier with beautiful views of the ocean. Plan to bring sunscreen or cover up since you may be seated in the sun. Also some of the benches open up to the water so made sure phones, purses, and other items are secure. Service: okay, they are usually busy so you may need to ask for water refills and forgotten items. Our waitress was nice and our food came out quickly. Parking: deep, thin parking lot located in front of the restaurant. This lot fills up quickly and is challenging to turn around in. Public beach access parking lot adjacent is also usually full. Coming to eat or to be eaten alive? My gosh... the mosquitoes here were insufferable. Went here on a Friday evening. The place was packed and we were given an estimated 45 minute wait but were seated in 25. We walked the pier and watched the folks fishing prior to being seated, which was a nice pass time. The whole space was kind of shack style where there was roofing but no windows closing you in. Mosquitos were just going to town on all the diners. While this in itself was a bother, the wait staff's reactions were what were more disappointing. We asked if we could get bugs spray to which our server said they could not provide any. Yet the table next to us received bug spray from their server. When we went to apply the bug spray, staff told us to spray it elsewhere while the other party at the table over was not given any instruction to do so even as they applied bug spray within the establishment and the mist did spread. Finally our server profusely apologized to the table next to us for the bug situation when they were leaving but completely ignored us when we were on our way out. Anyone paying attention could notice the difference in treatment... pretty blatant racism in my view and definitely would not support dining at this establishment. Food was also not good - on its own it would be a 2.5/5 at best. I tried the fish tacos. The tortillas were not warmed, the pico de gallo was just chopped veggies and not a salsa at all, and the fish was far over salted and extremely oily. Came with a side of rice which was dry, hard, and unseasoned. And it has nothing to do with cash vs. credit card, because they offer a lower price for cash already. Raise your food prices, if you must. Don't put some bogus charge onto your tickets. There were a lot of positives here and a few negatives but overall it's a solid restaurant! Positives: shrimp happy hour is a great deal! Super messy but wonderful for the price. Their salad bowl was fantastic and staff was very nice! Negatives: parking is definitely a nightmare and you need to get there early to get a spot. They charge for every single add on you can get. I got a crab cake sandwich with non of the toppings but asked for sauce on the side and it was $2, which is ridiculous. The crab cake was good but was pretty small for what it should have been on the sandwich and was cooked pretty dark. First time eating there after a few years. Always went there for the ambiance and the food was meh. Glad we tried it again. The menu is much expanded with such a variety. They also expanded their seating so there are tons of optima to sit out on the pier. I had the seared tuna on a proof bun. Asked for a side of their sauce they serve on the wicked tuna. Perfectly cooked! Everything was an up charge (sauce $1) but I didn't care. Service was friendly. My friend had to wicked tuna tacos which she liked a lot. Be prepared for it to be windy! We always have a great experience with the staff who are friendly, though with the view it almost wouldn't matter. Sitting on the pier especially during the evening is wonderful! Though it may take a wait to get in, yesterday we waited 30-45 minutes but it can get longer. We went around 4:30 pm for an early dinner which was perfect. Drinks served out front while you wait. Food is always fantastic here! I've gotten a few different things but my favorite so far is the coconut shrimp basket with sweet potato fries. Great sauce to go with it too! I actually ordered twice to make sure my first experience was not an anomaly. I read the reviews and was excited to sample the excellently reviewed food. My first experience was as a customer of the pier, and in the mid-afternoon, I placed an order for what I thought would be a great break during my fishing. I ordered the blackened tuna bite tacos. I created a note that would pick up when ready. At the prescribed time, I walked to the restaurant to retrieve my order. When I went to the counter I told the waitress I had an online order. She looked behind her and he handed me a bag. Nothing was said. Nothing. The tuna seemed less than sashimi grade, was extremely rare, and had no sear to the outside at all. There were two plain flour tortillas filled with raw, unseasoned small chunks, accompanied by what appeared to be a store-bought mayonnaise slaw mix. Lacked any originality and was cold. Was also presented with a condiment cup of lower-quality yellow rice also lacking flavor. Very disappointed but tried to remember it was off-season and later afternoon around 3 pm. The tuna bite tacos reminded me of frozen tuna from a big box store not thoroughly defrosted. I did not ask to speak to a manager or complain as I was still fishing and thought it may be a fluke. Fast forward a few hours and the family wanted to try. We ordered the appetizer southwest egg rolls, crab cake sandwich, shrimp basket, fish basket, and family fries. As I was going to check out I noticed that after I chose the crab cake sandwich the item on the menu showed out of stock online. So we called. We were told that there was one crabcake sandwich left for our order. I proceeded to the restaurant and to the bar carryout area. A young lady then asked if I had called in an order online and I stated that we had. She said that they had tried to call me (this is within 3 miles of our home) to say that they were out of crab cakes. I questioned her as we had just confirmed the crab cake was available. She said they had been running low and asked if I wanted a replacement sandwich. I had to feed my family so I said yes and asked what was available. She told me to look at the sandwich menu. I did but was also did not want the remaining orders to get cold while something else was being prepared. I opted for the tuna salad sandwich for expediency's sake. After a few minutes, a bag was placed on the table in front of me with nothing said and then the waitress approached me with a receipt for refunding the crab cake sandwich due to being out of stock, and then proceeded to hand me a new bill for the tuna sandwich for $14 and said there was a price difference. The price difference was a full-price tuna sandwich with no apologies or discount for their issues with portion control and availability of product after verbally confirming the order. At home, the shrimp basket appeared to be a few low-quality store-bought breaded shrimp, fries, and slaw. Overcooked mass-produced breaded shrimp. The fish basket was again low quality, the same size commercial breaded fish rectangles of small proportion. Family fries were commercial fries deep Fried with condiment cups of sauce. The balsamic sauce was one of the worst attempts at a balsamic that I have ever tasted. In summary, not fresh, not good and they didn't care. read more

Great location on a pier over the beach. The place draws lots of customers, but they're way overwhelmed and unorganized. The experience is rushed and unwelcoming. They don't explain anything and serve up drinks that are made without liquor, but rather sake without letting the customers know. I consider this rude, insulting and a total rip off. Aside from all this, the place is filthy. Sticky accommodates, tables and essentially everything. The staff, management and investors simply don't give a damn because they get their customers by default. There are too many other places in the OBX that actually care about their customers. read more
