We had a Sunday lunch at BJ's Carolina Cafe while vacationing in the area. Only a few tables were occupied when we arrived at 11:30, but the after-church crowd arrived shortly thereafter and by the time we left, there was a short line waiting for a table. The food was an OK. My pulled pork had a smoky taste but was definitely dry. In a state known for pork BBQ, this was average at best. The slaw, however, tasted very fresh and was not mayonnaisey ; I liked it. The hand-cut fries were OK, but would have been excellent if they had been hot. My dining companion's burger was cooked as requested and she thought it was very good. Service was OK, but definitely not overly attentive. Compared to prices down the road in Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head, the restaurant is a good value. Based on our experience, BJ's Carolina Cafe mainly caters to a local crowd. All in all, it's fine, especially if it's nearby or on your way to/from Outer Banks. read more

We've ate here a few times and each time we come a particular waitress is very rude towards us and my 4 year old brother who has autism. The most recent time we ate here she went as far as to ask the surrounding tables if they want to move away from us very loudly. Right in front of us btw. My brother was never causing any trouble or doing anything to anyone. That being said he is friendly and can get a bit loud every once in a while, but nothing crazy. This is the only restaurant that has ever had a problem with him. On top of that our service was very poor, almost like the waitress was avoiding us. Stopped by it was great. Service was excellent. Ordered a sweet tea and a lemonade. The sweet tea was great but the lemonade was phenomenal. The lemonade was made on the spot to ensure freshness. I got the fried fish of the day, which happened to be flounder. It came with two side, I got the cucumber salad and pasta salad. Also ordered the BBQ Platter with fries and coleslaw. Both plates came with cornbread. They were great! Wanted to try as many sides as possible and was not disappointed. Got a brownie to go because their dessert case is strategically by the register to pay out. I was already entirely too full because the flounder was the size of my head, but everything in the dessert case looked way too enticing! There were so many pies... pecan, coconut, peanut butter. We tried BJs on a chance, as we normally head to Mels's on our way off the island. We were pleasantly surprised. First the waitstaff were helpful and cheerful. Let me say that the prices were so reasonable that we thought the check was Incorrect. We had almost the same exact meal on island and the cost more than double the cost. I would say that this was probably the best breakfast I have had on any OBX trip that I have taken. All basics eggs scrambled or over easy. All cooked well Pancakes, grits biscuits and potatoes all very nice. We will definitely be going back. read more

I cannot say enough good things. It started with us coming in and we were greeted and told they are short staffed and just got an unexpected rush of people so there were gonna be some waiting but they would love to have us if we didn't mind. LOVED THAT! Then even though they said, there was no delayed service and the food was still served quickly and hot! Then the food was great, reasonably priced. Atmosphere clean and spacious. The only thing better than all that was the service. Our waitress was amazing. Incredibly attentive and friendly! Maybe the best bang bang shrimp I've had, fried fresh catch of the day was flounder and it was perfect. Was so stuffed I couldn't even eat a bite of the cornbread but I took it home to eat later because it looked and smelled so delicious! We've been here three times (and counting). It's a great little cafe right before the bridge to Outer Banks. We've went there for dinner and breakfast. The location is super convenient. The servers are all super nice (had three different ones). Dinner: We agree, for the style of fries they make, they are the best. Honestly, you could go here and have loaded fries for your meal and be happy. Be sure to order a beer, as their drafts are great. Fries are house-made. You can tell. On our first visit, we were surprised at how good they are. The waiter was nice enough to tell us the little story about em'. All of the sides we tried were great. Fam agreed the fried pickle spears were amazing. Fries as mentioned. Entrees are a little more lackluster. They're good just those daggon fries are too good. I had a burger first then a chicken platter with cheese. The chicken chesapeake wasn't too good. I got to try the chicken tenders; they were by far the best. Pulled pork was decent. Breakfast: We didn't think they'd nail a breakfast, but they do. My omelet was filled with thick cut bacon, akin to pork belly. Biscuits and gravy were legit. Sausage links were great. When you crave a satisfying meal that screams home-cooking, this is the place to go! We visited the in-laws last weekend to celebrate my MIL's birthday. There are no options in Poplar Branch, so I scoured Yelp for something within reasonable distance with a variety of menu options (read: not all fried) for all of us to enjoy. BJ's came up and looked like a great choice. We stopped in after church, around 12:30. There is plenty of parking in their unmarked lot. We were greeted immediately at the door and taken to a large table. I LOVE the seating here - a collection of Amish-built family dining tables, mixed with more conventional tables and booths. We felt right at home. At the entrance, I noticed a collection of preserves and their own cornbread mix to take home. The restaurant had a steady stream of diners coming in on this rainy day and plenty of seating to accommodate! Our server, Heather, greeted us right away and was the epitome of Southern charm. My family can be a bit terse (even ornery) sometimes and she was "sweet as pie" through our entire meal. She was even kind to our toddler who was having a hard time sitting still. She went above and beyond to make sure we had what we needed. Collectively we ordered a black and bleu burger with side salad, bacon cheeseburger with fries, ham & cabbage special, fried shrimp lunch platter and garden salad with grilled chicken. Hub's side salad was HUGE - falling off the plate huge. The burgers and fries looked delicious and were raved about. Shrimp platter was enjoyed (and also large portion). My salad was really good and fresh, but the amount of chicken for the price ($6 add-on, making my salad even more expensive than the shrimp platter) was a little disappointing, especially considering how large the burgers were. The ham and cabbage special also looked particularly delicious. Tasty food and great service. I wish we lived close enough to take advantage of the weekly specials which are listed on their website. We met one of the owners, Wanda, who was kind enough to sit with us for a few moments and chat. You can tell she puts a lot of love into the restaurant and the meals served here! I didn't take any photos because I was in such a hurry to eat the good food! I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and fries, my boyfriend ordered the fried flounder with fries and cornbread, and we ordered hot wings for the table. Everything we ate was yummy but the winners were the wings and fries! Plus for the price of the food, you can't beat it! Also, if you get the chance to try their BBQ sauces, please do! I bought a bottle for the road. When I checked the web site for the menu and saw they had fresh fish and love music on a Wednesday, i was in. I had the grilled flounder with a side salad and fried okra. Wow what a meal, it really hit the spot for just what I wanted. I sat at the bar and had great service from Missy with her friendly smile and Southern welcome. This is our 4th time dining here this week and we weren't disappointed. Today we got the Fried Chicken Special recommended by our servers Sharon and Tara (great personalities and very knowledgeable about all aspects of their menu). The chicken was perfectly cooked, the hand-cut fries were crispy and HOT, and the homemade cornbread was hot and fluffy. If they aren't offering the Fried Chicken Special, don't worry, EVERYTHING that we've had from their regular menu was delicious and worth ordering. There isn't a problem finding a parking place and you won't have the horrible volume of beach traffic either. This alone is reason to dive there!! The place is pretty clean along with the bathroom which is unusual considering it's a place off of a remote area on 158. The waitress, Tara (I think) is very pleasant and friendly. I ordered the crab cake which was full of crab meat and not breaded like others. It's all crab meat the way it should be. My friend ordered the red drum fish and she said it was moist and flavorful as well. Highly recommend this place. Will come back if I'm ever in the outer banks. We had a very large local crowd for Burger Night, 20+.....when we arrived the sweet girl at the door said there were only 2 waitresses on staff, they took us to the back room where we helped her set up a very long table.(we arrived first), very quickly everyone came and all seated with menus. The waitress was absolutely amazing, she was patient and friendly with our loud group. We got drinks first then time passed till we ordered but it was well worth the wait. Everyone got exactly what they ordered and how they wanted it, we were in awe. If was one of the BEST burgers I've had on the OBX. I wish I had the waitresses name but kudos kudos, kudos. This place is out a ways, 5 or 6 miles beyond the Wright Memorial Bridge on NC 158. We used to come out this way when Saul's BBQ was still open, so we thought we'd give the BBQ here a shot. The chopped pork here is quite good, much better than I had anticipated actually. It is very lightly sauced out of the kitchen, but tender and has little smokiness. The meat is brown in color rather than the gray you usually see - probably a combination of cooking method and sauce. The bun of the sandwich is not the standard bun, more of a brioche, and it is firmer than you usually see, but the sandwich works, and the slaw is nice. Whatever, this is worth a try if you're in the area. The FFs are also good., and the service is excellent. We'll be back next trip down to the OBX. read more

Went there several weeks ago while on a golfing weekend. The food was great and the service even better. Had a 14 ounce Prime Rib and it was the best piece of prime rib I've had in a long time. Bigger then 14 ounces, two great sides and plenty of tea. Don't let the outside fool you. It's a great place to eat. I hear breakfast is the bomb too. Great place to stop on the way back home from the beach. They have a breakfast buffet for $10.50 with bacon, sausage links, scrambled eggs, grits, biscuits, sausage gravy, french toast sticks and seasonal fruit. My friend got the buffet and had 3 plates.... They also have some lighter and cheaper options for breakfast as well. I opted for the corn beef hash with fried potatoes, over easy eggs and wheat toast. The wheat toast was nice and thick too. The corn beef hash was some of the BEST IVE HAD IN A WHILE. It had a good crisp to it and my friend that never has hash tried some and said they loved it. Only complaint was from one of my friends that had a Pepsi and it was $2.99... little steep for a smaller establishment. My ice tea was $1.99 and that seemed more reasonable. I'm a part of a large-ish family, so getting everyone fed is always a challenge. With 17 adults and 21 children vacationing together in Corolla, Wanda and BJ took care of all of us. We had caesar salad, pulled pork & rolls, prime rib, baked ziti, green beans, cornbread, coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, chicken tenders, and every single dish was a hit. We were celebrating our daughter's graduation from high school, and we added a sheet cake for desert, and everything went incredibly well. The delivery was on time, the food was hot and incredibly delicious, and both Wanda and BJ were wonderful. I can't endorse them well enough for what they did. The place is definitely a worn down diner. We sat right away and also checked the buffet... Looked like packaged stuff, nothing fancy or appetizing. We all ordered from the menu. Here is what we got: Pig Candy - this missed the mark completely. Skinny, limp, fatty bacon with brown sugar sprinkled on top... It left a lot to be desired. Sausage egg and cheese on a biscuit - so small, looked like a kids size, my hubs was disapointed, but he did say the biscuit was good. Country boy - I was so excited for the ham, after all, it's a bbq place right? Well, it was awful, it was literally grey and thin and severelly overcooked and over salted... I didn't have the heart to send it back, but it made me sick just looking at it. The potatoes and eggs were cooked well though and were good. Belgian waffle - can't go wrong here. Overall, I'm full. This is now one of my favorite places to eat. I had bbq fries and Thai sweet chili wings that were phenomenal. My son had the bang bang wings and stated they were the best wings he's ever had. The staff was outstanding. They greeted everyone who came in. Took our orders quickly and had a very fast turnaround to serving. Everything was reasonably priced with large portions.
