Popey's is a nice, fun place for snacks and ice cream. Located in the middle of tiny Morris, which is the middle of a rural area, it offers good food and a friendly vibe. We like the burgers because they are cooked fresh to order and to your preference (medium, medium rare, etc.). The hot dogs are tasty, the krinkle fries prepared crispy as we like, and we also enjoy their soups and wraps. There are a lot of choices of food and ice cream. When you are inside you order from the grill on one side and ice cream on the other. There have a bunch of ice cream flavors, some special treats (brownie sundae for instance), shakes. etc. The youngsters behind the counter are hard working, friendly and eager to help. The building is falling apart, it looks abandoned. I asked to use the bathroom and they referred me outside to a little shack near the dumpster where I was kindly greeted by a bear. The ice cream was overpriced and subpar, they don't even make their own ice cream. They sell Giffords ice cream that I can literally go to the store and buy a whole quart for cheaper than the price of a cone. I waited 30 minutes for my food and it wasn't even good. They've been around for fifty years, and their website describes a visit to Popeye's as "A Nice Ride to a Nice Place". I agree. Popeye's has a big selection of food and ice cream, so if you want a burger, hot dog, fries, rings, or even a portobello sandwich, you can get it here. And what about dessert? Well, there is Gifford's ice cream galore. I saw 25 flavors on their menu yesterday. We paid $11 for a flurry and a small dish, My dish of Raspberry Chip Cheesecake was fantastic, some of the best ice cream I've had in a while. We decided to have our ice cream in their dining room. They're always very kind accommodating and very hospitable. Any and all of the staff that I've ever come in contact with have always been extremely pleasant. They're all a great bunch of good hearted wholesome people working here. The shop is very clean with that great fresh ice cream shop aroma. If you know what i mean. I loved Popey's when I was a kid, and love them still today. Their menu seems to constantly expand but always has quality summer staples of hot dogs, hamburgers, and of course, ice cream. When you go, anticipate a line at both stations (there are separate ordering stations for food and ice cream). It doesn't seem to matter when you go, everything is made to order (at least, it seems that way) and takes some time. I've never had a problem with seating though. There is indoor and outdoor, the outdoor being nice if you're treating your dog to lunch (and before anyone gets worried about the dog in a car waiting for me on a hot summer day, dining with said dog is a two person job. Went at 2 on a Thursday afternoon. It was not busy, only 2 other parties one enjoying their ice cream and the other eating a meal. The young man behind the counter was pleasant and helpful. We ordered one medium and one medium rare burger with fries. It took about 25 minutes which seemed quite long as there was no one ahead of us. The fries were fine and a decent amount. The burgers were well done and very dry. The cost was over $30, without beverages. I used to love going here to get ice cream and sometimes food. Today was very different, to the point where I probably will not return, even for ice cream. I placed an order for a hot dog and fries. And then I decided to call my dad and ask if he wanted anything to eat. So I went back up and ordered him a burger and fries. Obviously his order was going to be done after mine since they were placed separately and others had ordered between. My order was called less than 10 minutes after I placed it. Then the next person, the next person and then the person that ordered after my dads order, then the next person after my dads order and then someone that called in after I placed his order got their food. Then about 5 more minutes went by and the girl called my dads order. When we got home he said the roll was stale - probably intentional too, for whatever reason. When I went up to get mine the girl told me the second order would take longer...obviously I knew that. But for it to take 20 minutes when there was only about 4 people in the whole place? Interesting. It seemed like it was intentionally pushed back and took longer. Whatever. The thing that pushed me over the edge, was a girl who went over to the ice cream toppings put a scoop in her hand, walked away and hid it. Then turned around put her whole hand up to her mouth and ate whatever it was. Then proceeded to go over to the other items and stir things and touch everything. She didn't wash her hands and they do not wear gloves there. And since they aren't wearing gloves, they're supposed to be washing hands more frequently. A couple other girls took a plastic spoon to the tub of ice cream to have a bite, fine but still not appropriate. Employees are not supposed to be eating in the work area. So we happen to live in a certain location where there always seem to be multiple options in multiple directions. There's almost like a formula in our heads that is constantly balancing distance, potential satisfaction, price, etc. We drive 25 minutes West for some of the best ice cream in the world, or even 20 minutes East for one of a kind hot dogs that you can't get anywhere else. The funny thing is that no matter where we're thinking of going or what we're thinking of eating, this place is pretty much on the list every time and here's why. They have really REALLY good ice cream and really good selections. Is it the best in the world? Probably not, but it's really good. They have really REALLY good food and a great menu selection. I mean definitely more expansive than you'd expect from a "standard" burger joint. We definitely are biased when it comes to hot dogs and have our front-runner favorites, but the dogs here are really good. Burgers, check, fried stuff, check! The fact that you can get your food and ice cream right in the same room is pretty sweet even if the food was mediocre, and they are way better than mediocre. The bottom line is that we have really good ice cream and burger/dog options 30 seconds from our house, but we'll more often than not opt for Popey's. It's just super consistent quick food that has never dissapointed. read more

10/5/16 I was out for a motorcycle ride through western Connecticut on this delightful early autumn day, and found Popey's Ice Cream Shoppe. Perfect timing, since it was late lunch time. Upon entering I found they also offer a pretty extensive menu of sandwiches and other light fare. The interior is a nice, warm, bright, traditional space with large windows and adequate seating. The young woman at the counter who greeted me, and took my order was friendly and cheerful. I decided on a tuna sub with lettuce, and tomato. I also noticed they offer in-store made soups that vary daily. I asked for a bowl of chicken noodle soup that was chock full of carrots, celery, chicken, noodles, and a bit of onion in a very nice, but not salty broth. The tuna sandwich had a decent amount of tuna with the right amount of lettuce and tomato, on a warm toasted loaf. What made my stopping in even better was that an older, local fellow came in to eat, and introduced himself, asking about my motorcycle parked outside. I invited him to sit and chat while we ate. We engaged in a great conversation about motorcycles we'd each had over the years. That made the experience worth the stop by itself. I love Popey's and I'm a Waterbury guy who grew up on Frankie's, and both restaurants are good. Here is why I like Popey's a little more. 1) It may seem minor but I love hot relish on my hot dog, and Popey's is great. It's real relish vs Frankie's hot relish. Popey's has real peppers and it's hot vs the sticky/syrupy version at their competitors. 2) Their milkshakes. I don't remember if Frankie's has them, but you can go next door and get one at Carvel. I don't like having to go to another business to get something to drink. 3) Popey's has great outdoor seat and the area is nice and quiet. The only negative I have about Popey's is how long it takes to get your food. A simple order can take over 10 mins to get, which based on what they're serving is too long. read more

The ice cream is pretty good, and the food isn't too bad - it's your usual burgers, hot dogs, curly fries, etc. I had a chili dog that was .. mm alright, a bit heavy on the tomatoes (I prefer bean-leaning chili), but I ate it. Once in a great while I'm near a TV and see "Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives" and I always wonder why there isn't a great place like the ones featured on the show anywhere near home. Well...Popey's certainly isn't it. If you're looking for adequate fast food (Average hamburgers, hotdogs and fries) Popey's will serve the purpose. The Ice Cream falls in the same category, adequate. Not a surplus of flavors to offer, and about average. We had a horrible experience here! My wife and I were in the area having dinner yesterday and passed bye Popey's. We saw the good reviews and decided to stop in after dinner for an ice cream. While we waited in line to place our order I checked in on Yelp and was pleasantly surprised to see that there was a 10% off coupon. In fact, the coupon was in appreciation for first time customers. Unfortunately, that's all the appreciation we received and Popey's had nothing to do with it apparently. We were waiting behind an elderly gentleman who received his order but was standing at the counter while he was putting his change into his wallet. The young lady at the counter, ready to take our order, just stood there. I was not sure if she was still helping the elderly gentleman or ready to take my order. She finally moved to the side, into my view, and again, just stood there. I was waiting for her to say, "Welcome to Popey's, can I help you?" but all I got was a robotic stare. Was she still helping the elderly gentleman? Was she ready to help us? Who knows. I, the customer, had to ask if she was ready to take my order. We ordered a sundae with chocolate chip ice cream, hot fudge, peanut butter sauce, whip cream and a cherry. The young lady , without a please or thank you, promptly made our sundae and before she began ringing our order up I presented the 10% off Yelp coupon to her. She looked at my phone with a blank stare and said that she had never seen the coupon before and didn't think Popey's could accept it. Huh? You don't know what it is and you can't accept it? First, we are talking about .60 cents off and secondly, what do you think, Yelp just posts coupons for businesses without their permission? Um, no! So, now the young lady, not knowing how to handle this situation because .60 cents is a huge hurdle to over come with the register, has to walk over to the other side of the restaurant to consult with a manager. The young lady comes back over to me and says that they can't accept the coupon! Wow! At this point Popey's has completely embarrassed us in front of other customers who are clearly talking about us. I said to the young lady that I couldn't believe I was getting hassled over .60 cents and that I would have to include, in my review, that they would not honor THEIR coupon on Yelp. I have never, in all my reviews, had to resort to this but it's the point of the matter and the fact that, we, the customers, were being embarrassed because of Popey's ignorance. Now the young lady goes back to the manager and the manager comes over. The manager, the young lady, and a young man behind the counter all had to tell me, several times, that they know nothing about the Yelp coupon. Guess what? I DON"T CARE! It's not the customers problem! It's Popey's problem! The manage, with great hesitation, issued me the whopping .60 cent discount. Does it end there? No, the young lady asks me to include it in my review to let everyone know they won't honor the coupon! Are you kidding me? I have to do Popey's job? How about I get behind the counter and scoop ice cream too while I'm at it? The coupon should have been immediately accepted without punishing and embarrassing the customer regardless of whether Popey's knew about it or not. Why? Because IT"S NOT THE CUSTOMERS PROBLEM! It's the business's problem. Instead of taking the opportunity to welcome a first time customer, a Yelper at that, the opportunity was blown. As far as the ice cream goes it was nothing special. The whip cream was watery, the hot fudge was cold fudge, and the peanut butter sauce had a grainy consistency. I saw people eating hamburgers and fries but it didn't look like anything special and the fries were clearly frozen. I wouldn't come back here. If you read this review and feel the need to write to me to complain and whine about my review because you love the place and the food, don't bother. You see, the management/owners don't care about my review so why should you? Instead, just write a good review. I certainly don't care and won't write to you to tell you how wrong you are. read more

Went to this place after an out of town soccer match brought us up to Morris. Clearly posted were the prices for ice cream and waffle cones. $3.99 for the small cone with $.30 extra for the cone. The cashier tells me that the two cones total is $12 and some change. I asked why so much as it is posted on the board for $4.29 each (including the cone). The cashier says the prices are wrong and there is nothing she can do. I eventually was refunded the difference, but obviously the business was aware of the discrepancy and chose to ignore it. High priced , fried food and junk food. Long long waits for food, and ice cream line is long also because there's not much else around for competition until recently. Ice cream is Hershey's , and used to be better back when I was a kid . It was legendary when I was a kid and used to eat all that stuff but there's not much for healthy eats there .
