We tried Popo's this evening. Saying that the building looks rough is a huge understatement. We knew as soon as we pulled up that we'd either get some of the best food we'd had in a long time or we'd die of food poisoning. There would be no in-between. We were right, and fortunately the food was great. The chips and salsa were great, but unfortunately they're not unlimited free chips and salsa like most places. The first round is free and it's 50 cents for each refill. The food was delicious and really fresh and the portions were really generous. We finished up with sopapillas that were so hot and fresh, we had to let them cool before we could eat them. If you can get past the appearance of the building, this place is definitely worth checking out. read more

This business catered our work Christmas party, and the food was not very good. I have never eaten in the restaurant, but I wouldn't go unless I was invited by a friend. It might have been that we got all of the wrong stuff for the party, but I didn't really like it. read more

This is a great place to stop by for lunch and/or dinner. The quality of their food is top notch and they have some of the best red enchiladas in southern New Mexico. However they prepare the red sauce, I don't know but it is flavorful and buttery smooth. There daily specials also make this place very affordable. Since they are only open for short periods of time, and not all day, it can be hard to make it here, but it's totally worth it. read more

When we've returned to Roswell to visit family during the 27 years since we moved away, Popo's is usually the first restaurant we visit. I always order the #1 Combination with the Chile Relleno (my favorite item on the menu!), one cheese enchilada, 1 meat enchilada, both w green sauce. I exchange the chalupa for a crispy taco. I always have food left on my plate. Their chips and salsa are delicious! We always purchase 4-6 lg containers of their salsa, to take home to OK to share w friends. We love Popos!! read more

Best Mexican Food ever! It had been over 25 years since I had Popo's with my dad and I went out of my way this summer during our vacation so I could share this place with my wife and kids. Darn. I use to love this place. I liked their stuffed sopapilla and green chili cheese fries. It's always been divey (at least since I've been eating there over the past four years), but this last time it was totally sketch. The floors, menus, and tables were filthy. There was literally a bug on my menu. Come on. There was a great crowd there on Friday night and our server was sweet, but those were the only pluses. The once-terrific salsa was unbalanced and boring. Bad chips. Queso was yummy but it was such a weird color that I would feel bad recommending it. I had a combo plate with a taco and enchiladas. I used to be able to recommend this place as an off-the-beaten-path option. If I had written this review two years ago, I may have given it four stars. On our most recent visit, the restaurant was filthy. I do not use this word lightly. I've been in places where they've neglected to wipe down tables and have not held it against them: inattention and preoccupation with other things is understandable. This visit: every table that was available had food remnants and water rings. There was food on the floor in multiple places--even in walking areas where no tables are. I can only imagine the kitchen. No one seemed to be responsible for cleanliness. The food: really disappointing. The salsa was sadly bland. The rellenos are perhaps the worst in Roswell--breading lacked flavor and all the chile flavor was missing. The beans were probably the most exciting part of the meal. The service: aloof but okay. The building: something you can overlook IF the food is good and the tables are clean. Otherwise, it's another strike against you. Overall: this place has been mismanaged to the point where it's not recognizable anymore. They've cut corners on everything. No diamond in the rough. Just rough. read more

Great service. It is a local Mexican restaurant that serves a homestyle, authentic menu. The dish I ordered was good, although not very spicy. The chips and salsa were decent served as an appetizer. Overall, this is a normal small-town restaurant with a local feel. The decor is very plain with a Mexican-style eating area. Inexpensive, take the whole family. I actually dared my husband to go in here. It's on the rough end of town, surrounded by autobody and appliance repair shops. I'm so glad we bothered! The chips were thick and hot. The salsa was good, maybe not spicy enough, but good flavor. The one bad thing: if you order a soft taco, they still dip the tortilla in oil. It's just...wet. with oil. But the hard tacos are super yummy. The building was a house, so its all separate little rooms and red tile floors and white plaster walls with arches. Popo's is a local restaurant off the main streets of Roswell but still downtown. There are no frills just great Mexican food. Being from Arizona, I feel qualified to say this could be one of the best in the SW. The red and green enchilada sauces were magnificent with delicious layered flavors. The chili relleno was one of the best ever, seemingly freshly made prior to serving. The table salsa was fresh and excellent and not too hot, just right. After we had eaten this delicious meal and waxing about this gem of a restaurant, our waiter ask us if we would like a sopa for desert. The sopa was perfect. We could have paid 2-3 times more for this meal that might not have been nearly as delicious. read more

Absolutely love his place. I have never had a problem getting a table as soon as I walk in and the servers are very prompt at getting drinks. The menu is small enough that you don't feel overwhelmed trying to figure out what you want and you get complimentary chips and salsa! It only takes about 10 minutes to get food on your table and even when you call your order in to take home, as soon as you're off the phone you can head over because it only takes about 10 minutes for them to have it ready for you. Popos use to be the place we went to every time we made it to Roswell. It has definitely gone down hill. We use to order stuffed sopapillas that came with rice and beans. Now you only get the sopapillas. The chips always seem to be stale. Today we had to wait forever to receive our food. I had to ask 3 times for silverware and 3 times for a to go box. It is just not worth the time anymore. We will not be returning! read more

I visit Popo's every time I am in Roswell. Just good classic authentic salsa, chips, and food! Sopapillas at the end are delish. Very very affordable prices. The place is not fancy, but it is clean with lots of locals and the staff are friendly and helpful. I really hope I don't read another review that the prices are too high... that's when you opt to go to taco bell instead as this place has authenticity. My favorite thing here is the chips and salsa.... I could drink the salsa but everyone has their own style.
