Stopped by Pops & Poosh for lunch and had such a great experience. I'm a big fan of Haitian food and don't come across many spots nearby, so finding this place felt like a real gem. We visited on a Sunday and were lucky enough to catch Soup Joumou day. The soup was rich, comforting, and full of flavor. I had the beef version and finished every bite. The patties were another standout: flaky, crispy, and juicy. We tried both beef and chicken, and the beef was definitely the favorite. We also ordered black rice with peas, fried plantains, stewed chicken, baked mac and cheese, and griot to go. Everything was made fresh, well-seasoned, and the portions were just right. The drinks were refreshing too, we had the Couronne Fruit Champagne soda and the Ji Sitwon lemonade. One thing to note: food is cooked to order, so it's best not to come in a rush or to call ahead if you're short on time. It was about a 45-minute drive for us, but absolutely worth it. Even the leftovers didn't last long at home. Plenty of parking, great food, and a spot I'll definitely be returning to. I love me a good Haitian Patty, and I will travel to get some. This restaurant lives up to the social media hype! On a Saturday afternoon I was able to walk in and get a dozen chicken and a dozen oxtail. Yes, OXTAIL patties! They were delicious, the pastry surrounding the meat was soft and flaky. I wish I lived closer so I could get an order more often. Service and presentation was amazing. They're easy to get to, right off Merrick Road, and in a small shopping center with ample pull up parking. Can't wait to come back and try their traditional plates. For starters we had the chicken, beef, cod and shrimp patties, they were flaky and had a good amount of filling my daughter absolutely loved them and even wanted some to go. You could taste the vanilla in the homemade Haitian lemonade & cola lacaye will always be offered at any authentic Haitian restaurant. For our entree I couldn't resist getting the Red snapper with diri djondjon (Black rice) and fried plantains. The snapper was a decent size and was fried well a fish sauce was also given and it had good spice to it with peppers and onions. My daughter had chicken in sauce with white rice and black bean sauce. Bean sauce with white rice is her favorite so she was sold the chicken she mentioned being good. My first time trying Haitian cuisine at the raving request of a coworker. There patties are like nothing I've ever had. The crust is almost indescribable. We drove here from New Hyde Park to give Pops and Poosh a try! We ordered two lemonades, a fritaille platter with griot, a side of Mac and cheese and a side of duri djondjon. The lemonade tasted very authentic according to my husband and I loved it, too! It has a nice essence of Haitian vanilla that you can really taste. The griot, the national dosh of Haiti was very well seasoned and fried to perfection! We really loved it (and bonus, they didn't give a plate full of bones or too much fat). The rest of the fritaille was delicious, too (Accra, bannan peze, and sweet potato). The Mac and cheese was lukewarm, but tasted good and is very creamy. I'm actually glad it wasn't too hot because I had to feed my hungry daughter right away! The duri djon djon was piping hot and tasted good, too. I am so happy I found this Haitian restaurant on Yelp. Haitian food is top tier, but in the states most Haitian immigrants focus on healthcare, law or engineering, so you don't see as many restaurants. I am happy to see more Haitian restaurants popping up. If you have never had Haitian food, be prepared for lots of flavor as the spices are left to marinate into the dishes. And I will be bold enough to say that the rice is the best in the Caribbean. I ordered the legume (vegetable stew) which came with sauce pois (bean sauce) and white rice and the Mac n cheese. EVERYTHING was delicious and fresh! I was pleasantly surprised to learn they don't automatically add meat to it, but you can get that separately. Growing up on Long Island I made many Haitian friends, and I was always fortunate to be the beneficiary of their parents' delicious cooking whenever I was around. Pops & Poosh brings me back to those days I spent at my friends houses! From their delicious Legim, which is a stewed vegetable dish that you can get with or without meat, to the savory Haitian patties (You can get different types- Chicken, Beef, Cod Fish, Herring, Veggie, or Conch. I tried the Chicken, Cod Fish, and Beef. All of them are fantastic!). Everything is made with love and passion, as well as flavor that will have your taste buds dancing (To Kompa, perhaps!). They also offer lambi (conch) and griot (pork). The griot patty I know is grabbing the attention of anyone who reads this. Last Sunday I was in the mood for soup so I went and got their soup joumou. Now I don't have to drive to Queens or wait to have some at my parents' house. First of all, they offer two options, with and without meat. And they didn't slack on the meat. The restaurant itself was very clean on the inside with a beautiful display of houses in Haiti. However, I wasn't impressed by the food. I ordered tassot with white rice and sos pwa. I also ordered a beef patty which turned out to be free because it was my first time there. On my drive home I indulged in the beef patty, which was delicious, it wasn't too flaky (which I appreciated since I was in my car) and the beef was seasoned to perfection. As a Haitian, I really wanted to enjoy this place, however, I was extremely disappointed. My meal didn't come with a side of sauce or a side of pikliz. I went to go visit my aunt in Freeport. On the way there decided to go and get some Patties. Unfortunately by the time I got there, it was closed. They close at 5pm on Sundays. They (I'm assuming owners/cooks) were literally locking the door. After a brief convo. They gave me some cod, lumbi and shrimp Patties on the house. That was very kind and generous of them. They definitely didn't have to do that. But bc of this. They have my business. Besides there generosity these are one of the best Haitian Patties I've ever had in a long time. 1st They don't make a mess when u eat it. And 2 they actually contain a good ratio of meat compared to flaky dough. And before this restaurant, never even knew lumbi patty was even a thing. I will be going back next time I'm around. read more
