I ventured into Pops this afternoon after brunching at the St Francis Fountain across the street. Upon entering, I was immediately struck by the low lighting and dingy feel of the bar. All was soon forgotten when my Bloody Mary arrived with a strip of bacon, a pickles asparagus, a pickled green bean, and a pepper. This was a whole meal in a glass, and I couldn't be happier. So I walked into this bar with a stank attitude-- partly because I was tired but mostly because I didn't realize TBB (Tech Basic Bitch or Behavior if you don't use "swear words") had sunk so deep in my DNA. Timeline of basic thoughts below: Upon getting out of the Lyft (clearly protesting Uber-- ref: TBB): "Who is this absolutely kind bouncer greeting me with a smile?" Upon entering: "Why aren't ppl huddled together like cattle while on their phones?" Why is the owner being so nice to my friends? Wait, why is he being so nice to everyone?" Navigating the crowd: "How come I don't have to say excuse me 50 million times before someone looks up from their phone and moves 2inches?" Ordering drinks: "Where is my craft cocktail menu with ingredients I can't pronounce? Why is this bartender not giving me a side-eye for asking for Kettle One and soda? Why is this drink so reasonably priced?" DJ: "Wait they're not playing house/EDM music?Oh whoa... It's just regular 90s music that we can all enjoy.WAIT...They have karaoke....someone just chose California Love...Are we in Oakland?" This place woke me. Dive bar in the Mission with the expected interesting characters. The place has a vintage style photo booth in the back, so that gets a thumbs up in my book. The booth is covered in graffiti and stickers, plus smells like farts inside, but hey, it is in working condition. The beers are reasonably priced. Now I know why people call this place Poops. I came in again and the place smelled like sharts and BO. The doorman overheard me saying that it smelled like the toilet overflowed, his reply was "it probably did". The clientele is the most annoying breed of skater hipsters, like the place isn't good enough for regular hipsters anymore. Much like Thee Parkside, I'm definitely not cool enough to hang at Pop's on a regular basis. But with that being said, if I were sleeved with tats, got around town on the same skateboard I've been riding since the Tony Alva days, owned nothing but leather jackets, and only bought shoes at HUF, I'd be a regular here faster than you could say 'Dogtown and Z-Boys.' There's no room for trust fund hipsters at this joint -- it's the real deal. These cats are the forefathers and mavens of the great American Apparel plot for world domination, and something tells me they'd happily ring the necks of any deep-V wearing art school dropout who tries to step on their turf with Serato boxes and bedazzled Toms slippers. Not shoes, slippers (c'mon, those things are ridiculous... even if they are a philanthroper's wet dream). Anyway, I think you get the point as to the general make up of their patrons.... As you might expect with a lead up like that, as for the space itself, you'll find dark sticky floors, cheap drinks, DJs spinning real vinyl in the back of the room, and bartenders who'd just as quickly give you the finger than entertain the idea of making you a lemon drop or apple tini, no matter which sorority sister is celebrating a birthday. If you're looking for the perfect night to play, hit 'em up on Monday when they'll throw down a plate of bacon with your tall Budweiser. I met a "secret friend" at Pop's the other night for drinks & conversation. Though Pop's is, literally, two blocks from my apartment I'd never been there... I don't know why, as my roommate (Bonnie) told me that they serve free bacon there on Monday nights. You'd think that would be impetus enough for me to go there immediately... For some reason it wasn't. Maybe I'm losing my edge. Anyhow - this is where I met my "secret friend" the other night (b/c it is close to home & it was raining.) My "secret friend" & I were both pretty impressed with Pop's - it's a great dive-punky bar - one which was even crowded on a weeknight. The drinks are very cheap, there's a pool table, a photo booth & the bar has it's regular creepy guys who listen in on your private conversations... Making lewd comments under their breath as if they were a part of it... Plus, lots of punk rock Mish hipsters... PLUS, PLUS - two blocks from Taqueria El Farilito which stays open until midnight on weekdays, 2am on weekends and is the perfect place to get grub to soak up the cheap drinks you spent time consuming at Pop's. But this place is way too hip and sedate to be compared to the 540. They do, however, get bonus points for a pool table. And a photo booth. And an ATM! With a Thrasher sticker on it. Which seemed to my drunken self to be PRETTY DAMN COOL since my bf works for Thrasher (even though it's really totally of no consequence to the bar or this review) and kept me entertained while I withdrew money I couldn't afford to throw away on more alcohol that I definitely didn't need. This bar could not suck any harder if it were a back-alley crackwhore down on her knees looking to score some rock. I so wanted to like this place, being as I live five steps away from it and it had the potential to be my local. Any bar where, upon last call, I'm a mere 30 seconds away from my mattress, has to fuck it up pretty hard not to get my vote. Much has been said here about the tediousness, the prententiousness, and the scab-addleness of Mission hipsters, so I won't elaborate too much on the tedious, pretentious, scabby clientele. I will say that these people, on any average night, act as though this is their first time in a bar. Ever. There is screaming, yelling, hair-pulling, hand-wringing, and puking on a regular basis. Learn to hold your drink, peoples. You're an embarassment to Mission hipsters everywhere. And the first night I moved in? We enthusiastically popped over to Pops, looking to settle in and introduce ourselves to the bartenders as neighbors and make some friends. What we saw was the bartender doing a healthy coke trade from behind the bar and four sketchy-ass motherfuckers looking to pick a fight with anyone who looked at them crossways. We were later awakened by those same four gentlemen kicking the shit out of a homeless man in the middle of the street at 2:15, one of whom was pissed because he'd gotten the homeless guy's blood on him. Goddamn, seriously? I wanted to like this place--the drinks are cheap, the vibe has potential, and the photo booth kicks ass. But's it the few dozen that spoil it for the rest of us, huh? This might be the cheapest bar in the City. They always have good specials and if nothing else you always get the PBR pitcher for $6 which holds about 4 pints. My friends loved the free bacon on Mondays and its now become a legend among us. Told with pride to disbelievers who don't understand the concept of free delicious bacon. This is certainly my "neighorhood" dive....and that's true for several "regulars" I see there everytime I stop in. It's cheap. Like, HELLA CHEAP. You can always get a pitcher of Pabst for $6.50 (except on Tuesdays, when it's only $5). The Happy Hour is awesome ($2 wells and $2 domestics). The daily specials are great (Wednesday is $1 Hammes, if you're into that thing). The jukebox is a thing of dreams. In one sitting, I played Minor Threat, the Misfits, and Operation Ivy. The next person up knocked out Iron Maiden and Madonna. After that, I think I heard Snoop Dogg. There is a photo booth ($3 for 4 pictures/black and white/on the darker side) that has captured many of my drunken nights. A lot of people who have known about this bar for ages are jaded on it, claiming it's stuffed with hipsters and over-rated. Pop's used to be one of my favorite hangouts in the city. Fun to be had any night of the week. On weekends by midnight it's usually packed to the brim with hipsters leaving art shows or broken up parties & whatnot. Also, they dont usually I.D. so expect to run into a few underagers. The bar is pretty small a few tables & booths line the left wall, stools at the bar. Pinball, jukebox, pool table & photo booth in the back. I would recommend against playing pool here because the drunk patrons making their way to the bathroom as well as the close proximity of the jukebox & walls will just piss you off. I also recommend against using the photo booth because the regulars (i.e; hipsters) will give you dirty looks and snicker, & don't play Lynard Skynard's 'Free Bird' before 1:30 a.m. or you will get booed, but I guess that goes for any bar. read more

Heres why: -Friendly bartenders -Groovin' tunes that are reminiscent of wacky high-school hijinks -Very dark and good for making out -Cheap drinks -a pool table (ok so lots of places have pool tables but still) but most impotantly...A PHOTO BOOTH!!! Seriously I'd go to this place just for that. I definitely don't get a hipster vibe at all. If anything it's almost anti hipster. Or maybe I'm just too drunk to notice. I spent at least 80% of the nights here for the last three years of my life. It's not for everyone but it's definitely for me. Dark, dimly lit environment, providing a juke box, a pool table, video poker, erotic photo hunt and table-top video games. The bartenders are all welcoming and friendly and the drinks are always on the cheap. Pay attention to the specials: Sun - $2.50 Jager, Mon - $1.50 Bud bottles, Tues - $5 pitchers of PBR, Wed - $1 Hamm's (my personal favorite), Thurs - $2 Bud tall cans, Fri - $2 well drinks, Sat - $1 PBR The perks? Monday night, Tuffy gives out free bacon, Wednesdays have Handlebars at the DJ table, Thursdays in the summer time there are BBQs and cookouts and once a year they have Tricycle races. The crowd on the average night is usually a close-knit, loud-mouth group of regulars and a few randoms who wandered into the bar. The busier nights, which tend to be Wednesdays and weekends can get a rather eclectic clientele in there that has you wondering, "Where did these people come from?" But if you are a fan of flannel, have tattoos and know how to talk shit, you'll probably fit right in here. Its a comfortable place, too far out to be picked up on the radar of the super hip, so it tends to be completely lacking of airs. It's somehow become my gold standard of bars. I don't know how it happened but I find myself in other bars thinking, "*sigh* It's not Pop's." And now that I'm away from the city, I miss it. I actually miss a bar. By the way, here's a little bet for you: There's a 98% chance that any night you visit, you will hear "Ace of Spades" and "Crazytrain" each at least once, if not several times. read more

I am diggin on Pop's simply because it is right around the corner from my new pad.They serve a great selection of beer and have the best ATM sign I've ever seen. Oh, and a photobooth. It is black and white, and those are the best kind because the high contrast makes everyone look beautiful. I can pass those pictures out to all my future boyfriends and they will think I was a model in a past life, but really I was just drunk at Pop's. *EDIT* I've decided to remove one star from this review because after getting to know the bar a wee bit more, I have some complaints. Too many vagrant/hipsters all f*cked up on pills. The last couple of appearances I've made, the patrons have been a wee bit too good for their gutter punk clothes and so rowdy and annoying that holding a conversation without having a drunk scream in your ear or run into you, spilling your beer all over the bar, is close to impossible. Ok, drastic change has to be made unfortunately. Besides being very inconvenient to get to, they have the worst DJs I've ever seen. Well there might be an exaggeration, but it's pretty close. I went on a Saturday night (maybe not the best night to go there) and it was like bro bar for hipsters. The DJs were seriously 2 OC looking dudes seating behind their Macs. The playlist started with Modest Mouse and then went down hill from there with a mix of Jimmy Eat World, The Ataris, Blink 182, and such. Seriously? You're gonna play Jimmy Eat World after Modest Mouse? I'm no music snob but 90's pop punk are THE WORST bands and obviously you know nothing about 90's indie rock. Were you really dj-ing or just playing random shit from your Pandora? The only highlight from this bar was they make good drinks and for $6 I got my sweet tea vodka in 16oz glass. I could describe the beverage prices or the dog guests or the clientele or the movies they show but all of these traits are reductionist. Ah...I love it when a pint of PBR and a Bud Tall Boy are the same price--$2 baby. But, I'm classier than that, so I always start with vodka...then I'll move to crappy, hipster beer. Perfect dive bar atmosphere but super-friendly staff, which is such a bonus when you go to dive bars because usually you have some idiot in his/her early 20s, with more tattoos than brains, in dirty clothes, and thinks that being rude=cool behind the bar more often than not. Thankfully that is not the case with the girls working the bar at Pops. Super-friendly, funny, and bless-em, they all have lead wrists. Though, I will have to grumble a little over the crowd. The people around my age in the crowd were cool, but then you have a small minority of baby, wannabe-hipster chicks ruining your buzz. I've been enticed by this place ever since I saw their name pop up on the now defunct myopenbar list. How did they make it on there? Free bacon on Mondays...duh. Nothing like tasty slabs of salted pig to turn me into an alkie on a Monday. I saunter into this place, and I kind of immediately feel like its very Samuel L. Jackson-esque from Pulp Fiction. I mean, everything about it....the super dim red lights, American Psyco on the TV, a crowd that is open to being cool, but only after they get to know you. The bartender comes over after a short wait, and asks me what I want to drink. I really wanted to say "I'll have that bad ass mother fucker over there", but instead said "PBR". Trust me, I would have said the former if I would have pregamed a bit though. Over the course of the night, I guzzle 3 PBRs but only dent my wallet by $6...whoa. On top of all this? I got some free bacon on request. Bartenders are pretty cool to talk to. One had clearly been born and raised inside a keg. Not only did he stand on top of a keg and roll it into place using only his feet, but he could also whip out a bottle opener with a 360 twist to it. That probably would look even cooler if it was done with a scary Dirty Harry gun. Go on a Monday, you'll get a seat, you won't pay much for drinks, you'll eat free bacon, and you'll be a bad ass motherfucker. read more

Coolest Vibe ever! Loved this place. From the pool table to the Pacman table top and graffiti tagging all in the restroom. I thought it was awesome. The bartenders were really nice. The crowd was super cool. Beer wasn't priced high and yup I would come back here and if and when I live in SF this would be my local bar kinda like CHEERS but way more grungy and darker.
