While waiting on some laundry to dry across the street, I decided to check out this bar since my friends had previously recounted their fun experiences there. I walk past it frequently and noticed the pool table so I've been meaning to practice my skills. It was busy but not crowded, very casual, and had a nice laid back ambiance. People were chill and they kept bartenders very occupied, but they were friendly and the bartenders were calmly keeping up with the orders. My only complaint is that one of the billiard balls was missing. Other than that, I think this is going to be my go-to spot to relax after a long week or my hideout when I don't have a busy weekend. read more

If you're looking for a "Cheers"-type tavern with regulars who look epoxied to their seats and an interior heavy on vintage atmosphere, this neighborhood bar fits the bill. It's been in the same location since Prohibition was repealed, and the history of the bar is described in meticulous detail on the pub's website. This is definitely no trendy pick-up joint for Gen Z drop-ins. As you might expect, they have a robust calendar of events encompassing bingo, trivia, live music, and dance parties. However, more important to me, they make a half-dozen specialty cocktails and a half-dozen Bloody Mary variations. We used to come here on a more regular basis, but the bar itself is pretty dirty, (not grungy) and the overall vibe seems to get drunk / wasted amongst the regulars. If you're looking for the men's room, it's literally the door to the right of the bar itself, and the women's is up the stairs to the left. read more

I remember walking past the St. Mary's Pub as a kid, too little to peek over the half door - it's been there forever but now it's a whole new St. Mary's Pub. I moved out of the neighborhood and when I came back, I had a new little spot to dive to. I'm really excited to see such a fun new little spot outside of La Mission and closer to Bernal. St. Mary's went through renovations and have new owners. I love the interior and the feel. The owners (and bartenders) are very nice people and make some pretty nice drinks. They still play the Giants game and have that neighborhood bar feel. The Margaritas come in full size pint glasses, for about $6.00. Sunday is"Sunday Blood Sunday" where they have 7 different and very unique Bloody Mary's. My favorite so far is the Inferno Mary, made with a homemade habenero sauce. I heard that there was a GSWarriors going last Thursday night, so I arrived at 7pm to save a booth for the small party I was hosting to send off one of my colleagues--sob. The entire bar was full of Warriors fans with some standing around cheering their team on. The vibe was neighborhood sports bar. I saw and greeted a few people I remembered from before, and met some more by being helpful. When the game ended, the pub emptied. And we had the place pretty much to ourselves for a couple of hours until the DJ arrived at 10pm. We were glad to be able to chat easily. As the DJ started spinning, the music got louder with each hour and the place filled to capacity. By 11pm, shrieking metal was blaring from the speakers as a group of goth metal heads entered. We had to yell at each other to be heard and cup our ears to hear any conversation over the din. As I scanned the room, I saw hipsters to guys wearing paint spattered jeans to techies and metalheads. The bar started emptying again at 1am and we left to walk ourselves home before closing time at 2am. read more

This is a pretty chill space. Drinks are reasonably priced, and the people here are nice. The decor is relaxed; its your basic dive bar. They also are cool about folks bringing in food from one of the restaurants in the area. So why 4 stars? Well, I'm here to see the the Warriors game advertised on the board outside the place. The problem is these lights that hang at just the right level to obstruct the view of the TV. Raise (or lose) the lights and this place is a solid five stars. read more

Great bar...and that's from someone who doesn't drink! I've guest DJed here twice now and the bartenders are just great. Super friendly and willing to make their specialty drinks without alcohol. I had a killer virgin bloody mary my first time and a nice refreshing lime/guava spritzer last night. And the popcorn machine!!! Popcorn is the way to my heart. Our (me, George and fur baby Rochelle's) favorite local kinda divey, but clean, bar. The bartenders are awesome and aren't afraid to get creative and won't give you attitude if they don't have all of the ingredients for your cocktail of choice (shout out to Morgan for coming up with the maraschino cherry wash to sub in for Luxardo and agave in place of simple syrup for my Hemingway). The owner Maria is very receptive to suggestions on improving her customer's experience and seems to really appreciate people who choose her bar to spend money and time in. The regulars are always entertaining and friendly and have a great bond with each other that is always fun to watch. A great place to watch sports and the bartenders will happily change the channel on one of the two tvs if you ask. We drop by St. Mary's at least once a week (unless we're traveling) and always have a good time. read more

Definitely the best time I've had in San Francisco this far!! I'm a San Joaquin County native born and raised. Visiting the city is always a privilege and adventure. This occasion I was blessed with free Giants tickets so we went. After the game we cruised and the ladies had to use the restroom. So we decided to stop here. Looked like a cool dive. Upon arriving we revieved smiles and greetings from the patrons smoking, we felt comfortable. As I led my two friends in I was greeted by John, the bartender. My friends went to handle business and I ordered my drink and he offered the usual garnish that compliments it. I take it plain tho so I said no. We began talking about the neighborhood then felt part of it. It was around 1130 and you can feel the vibe of guests enjoying the atmosphere. Red leather button top booths reminded me of Cadillacs or an elegant lounge. Before you know it, our rest stop becomes 2 drinks a piece. Asking ourselves, "are u sure you're ready to go?.. ok one more." Definitely a cool spot to accidentally run in to. Thanks John. Really three stars average, and four stars if you're a regular here. From the outside this bar looks divy, but once inside it's not like that. A roomy space separates the bar and the counter, with stools against the other wall. Pool play is cheap and that's always a plus. There's about a dozen regulars (non-barfly-looking) from the way the bartenders interact with them, and pretty much leave you alone. A place to hang once you get to know everyone - locals and workers. A place to stop in and catch sports once in a while. read more

The bar that popped my 21 cherry.. Funny.. It's a real bar's bar, the pool tables by the restrooms, chess boards with missing pieces, cool lighting and always poppin music. I love the little hokey popcorn machine here. It's not quite a dive bar but definitely not a cocktail lounge. I'd say it's best described as a very decent local. The kind of place that once they get to know you you'd be welcomed through the door with a greeting. I'd walked and driven past the pub many times over the recent years and during this visit I walked up here from my sons place. A steep mile but manageable. I immediately turned left upon entry and found a corner stool at the bar where I could lean back and rest against the wall. My favorite kind of spot. Full view of the bar and all who entered but nicely tucked away where I wouldn't annoy anyone. The locals are friendly, I had a great chat with a 50 year old guy who appeared to be rushing to sow all his remaining wild oats across South East Asia as quickly as possible. The highest compliment I can pay a bar is regarding their pour. This bar has a great pour so no need to order a double. I will be back here on future visits. read more

I'm shocked at all these one star reviews! I've been here twice and its quickly becoming my favorite neighborhood bar. I've been to Broken Record far too many times and the crowd here is always better than Pissed off Petes. Also why is everyone at this bar super good looking and drinking alone? I like the male bartender here way more than the female one. He showed me his id and I stared at thing for the longest time looking for the birthday. I thought he was trying to point out how much older he was than me since everyone does that when they check my ID so I look at the year and I'm like oh thats okay and my friend and him are all wtf and told me he had the same birthday as me! Hi Tim! Ohh FUN FACT TIME. Just earlier that day we had a statistics professor guest speak and he told us in a room of 25+ people, there is a 50/50 chance two people will have the same birthday. Their last call is 1:45am on a Tuesday night which is awesome since I get out of class at 10pm. Crazy! I'm so used to midnight last calls. How am I supposed to drink myself to emotional oblivion in two hours time? Thank God for St. Marys!!! There is a jukebox and a pool table. You have to tell the bartender if you want to use the jukebox though because they have to switch the music thingie over. The pool room is in the back in the tiniest room ever so you have to use those short fat sticks the majority of the time. People always look so silly using them teehee. Drinks are crazy cheap. They ran out of pineapple juice though so I couldn't get my new favorite Malibu+vanillavodka+pineapple juice concoction. They also have daily specials written in chalk on the door. Ambiance is dark and moody with plush booths and tables opposite the bar. Lots of food options right next door that are open late. The pizza place is awesome. Midnight pizza omnomnom. A friend that lives around the corner from St Mary's said that he heard the place was recently remodeled, so we went in to check it out. Atmosphere: 4 stars: some funny kitchy stuff without being cluttered. I personally prefer the Pete Rose picture by the cash register. There are some nice leather booths that look pretty sweet. We sat at the bar, but they looked great Activities: Pinball, pool table, sports on 2 TV's, and of course drinking. Drinks: Full bar. The beers I saw were Trumer Pils, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Blue Moon, Anchor, Big Daddy, Guinness (tap). In bottle/can I saw PBR, Oly, Bud, Miller. In general, this is a great little neighborhood bar. Not fancy, but comfortable. The two proprietors of the establishment were behind the bar, and were both very friendly. It's not the closest bar to my house, but it is fairly close, and I think that it will be a place that I visit on a more regular basis. read more

Ladies and Gentlemen: we have a local. St. Mary's Pub has reopened under new ownership. I've lived in the neighborhood - couched between Bernal Heights, Noe, and Glen Park - for a while. And it's been a dead zone for bars, save for the old St. Mary's which was cave-like, smokey and totally unwelcoming. I like a good dive as much as anyone, but that place was no good. So when St. Mary's Pub reopened this week after a few months closed, we were excited to try it out. We have already been back a couple times and will be back more. They put in new floors, raised the ceiling, painted the walls and installed big red vinyl booths. It looks fantastic. They have good beer and liquor at good prices. The bartenders and owners are super friendly, as are the other patrons we've met. If I could have dreamed up the ideal bar to put a block from my house, this would be it. So, it's totally weird to say this, I know, but: new St. Mary's, you are a dream come true. read more

Last night I had to drive my friend home to Bernal Heights, on the way to her house she mentioned that St Mary's pub had been remodeled and was under new management. I have only ever been there once for a Birthday Bash and didn't really like the place then. Way back yonder, well maybe a year ago, we caught the 14 down the dusty trail of Mission Street for this Birthday Bash. I wanted to get there early and leave early so we could go further into the Mission. We walk into the bar and it smelt like ugh can't even describe it. The place was dark and dingy old and gross didn't enjoy myself that much. So when I hear through the grapevine that the place has been redone, that's exciting news. Just within the distance to my house that I need and gives me that variety of life that I have been looking for. We pull up outside and my friend says she wants to go home, tired or some lame girl excuse. So I drop her off and my way decide the Variety starts with spontaneity So you can imagine my shock when I walk into St Mary's Pub and the place is divine a Mecca for the outer mission. Jimmy behind the bar was decked out in a white shirt and tie with an apron. Well lit tastefully decorated and comfortable. Drinks were cheap and Jimmy has a heavy pour, just what everyone likes to hear. Some friends that live nearby suggested this place for after dinner boozing a few weeks ago. On a Saturday night, it was busy, but we were still able to get a table. HATE that it's cash only, otherwise, LOVE this bar. The crowd was very diverse, people were friendly, drinks were cheaper than a lot of places, and parking was easy. What's not to like? This is not a hip or even a 'scene' bar. This is a straight up drinking bar. The bartender is friendly, however, as is the regular customers though they're drunk for the most part. Though they might seem a little rowdy, they're harmless and if you don't want to just sit around the bar counter, you can either fiddle around with the jukebox, or play pool in a separate room in the back. They're incredibly welcoming in here, though. And the best part about this place, I pretty much agree with Randy F.'s comment: No one you know will come looking for you here. read more

Visited St. Mary's with a couple of friends one weekday evening. Overall, it was a decent bar. I don't drink, but my friends really enjoyed the beers they have on tap. I can't remember all of them, but it's a decent selection. They also told me that their mixed drinks were pretty good too. There was a couple bartenders working. They were pretty friendly and attentive. There was one girl there that was pretty wasted and the bartenders knew when they needed to cut her off. Very responsible. The atmosphere here is super divey. I thought the music was too loud. It was hard to have a conversation. The bar stools were all taken when we got there, but they have cool half booths where you can sit and chill. There were a lot of what I assume to be regulars and I didn't feel particularly welcomed. I kinda felt like we were getting the side-eye the whole night. I don't know if I would come back here. My friends said the drinks weren't anything to write home about and the atmosphere was not super welcoming. A solid 3-3.5 stars for St. Mary's Pub. read more

Looking around the bar you could tell that it has been around for a long time and some of the guests have probably been around and in their same seats for just as long. Everyone was very friendly and I had no trouble striking up conversation and hearing stories from back in the day. I even met a guy who works at one of the bars further down Mission Street. So now I've got a familiar face when I visit. So what did I take away from St Mary's Pub? The People here were nice and very welcoming. I was offered a seat at the bar immediately, had the channel changed upon request and after only an hour was bought a beer by one of the regulars. There is one pool table and a couple of arcade games. Drinks are very affordable. I've never tried them, but they apparently have a special Bloody Mary menu on Sundays. Yep, it's a dive bar. The drinks are strong and the service is good. I'm currently surrounded by a baseball team still in their uniforms. Who drinks on a Friday night in their uniforms? The best part of St. Mary's is the pupusas from next door and the low traffic. This neighborhood has amazing food. Bring it in here and relax. They have a pool table in the back but it's in a tight room and you're forced to use the short stick 60% of the time. read more
