What starts as a quick trip for a few items somehow turns into a cart full of both "needs" and "well... why not?" I'm convinced part of the problem is the environment. On a Saturday afternoon, it's packed. Between the crowds and the sample stations every few aisles, it almost feels designed to slow you down and tempt you into buying more. So this past Thursday, I tried a different approach. I showed up at 8:00 pm, about 30 minutes before closing. Game changer. It wasn't empty, but compared to a weekend crowd, it felt wide open. No sample stations, no congestion, no navigating carts in every direction. I walked in with a list of five items and was in the checkout line within five minutes. Only two staffed lanes were open, plus self-checkout, but with just one person ahead of me, I stuck with a cashier and was out quickly. And for once, I actually bought only what I came for. If you're trying to avoid the Costco "cart creep," give the late evening run a shot.

During my visit this morning (March 21), the self-checkout area was clearly backed up, with several people waiting in line. At the same time, there was only one traditional checkout lane open with a cashier. While there was an employee overseeing self-checkout and helping when issues came up, it didn't appear there was any effort to open an additional staffed lane as the line grew. This seems to be a recurring issue at this location. If staffing limits the number of cashier lanes that can be open, it may be worth expanding the number of self-checkout stations to better handle peak times. Otherwise, adding support at the front end when lines build would go a long way toward improving the overall experience. I enjoy shopping here and will continue to come back, but I hope this is an area that can be improved.
