I used to go to the Porch Swing's sister bar, Front Porch, in Midtown regularly. I get nostalgic for its late night kitchen so I decided to stop in Porch Swing for the first time in over ten years. The place has aged a bit and the inside is more rustic than Front Porch ever was. The menu and kitchen are pretty much the same; solid food at late hours. The pizza is better than what I remember although they could cook the pie a little longer. The bar itself has specials Monday through Thursday. Mondays and Tuesday probably being the cheapest with its 3 dollar and 4 dollar beers respectively. Back before Christmas pop ups became a thing, Porch Swing Pub was doing Christmas right. I have only come during the holiday and my squad and I had a good time. I don't remember the pricing, but I believe it was a set price to partake in their Christmas festivities. This came with a table set up with plates with Christmas cookies, icing, and sprinkles. Porch Swing is located on the corner near Heights Blvd and Washington. There is plenty of parking. The location is a little on the older side and I feel like it's one of those spots that have lots of regulars coming in. They have daily specials and happy hour. While it feels more like a large dive bar than a pub, Porch Swing is far more versatile of a drinking hole than most nightlife spots in The Heights. There are lots of reasons to come here, whether it's their daily food specials, happy hour, or simply needing a venue where a lot of people an gather without the pretension. The place is bigger than it looks. They've got a good ample amount of indoor and outdoor seating and is ideal for groups all around. They've got a pool table, darts, and lots of TVs for watching sports. Parking isn't an issue as they've got a decent sized dedicated lot. Beware of the men's restrooms since every trip I've taken has ended in regret. (#1) Their array of food items is pretty typical for pub fare, but I'd venture most folks here are for the wings and the pizza. There do offer an array of finger foods from chicken tenders to chips & queso to loaded fries. Some are partial to their wraps, sandwiches, and burgers but I'd only go this route to curb any potential hangover. When in doubt, I'd say the pizza is the thing to get. Given all the taps and bottled beers they have, I'd almost be quick to call them a beer bar if they didn't already have a full bar. The have a range of domestic and a small selection of imported beers. Interestingly they have a dedicated selection of single malt scotch, which is definitely gets a thumbs up. While the folks behind the counter are nice, I do think they're somewhat understaffed. The wait times for drinks has been my biggest issue and I've been more apt to order food knowing that it'll come to my table or area quicker than a drink. While I think they're a solid, no frills bar with a decent amount of things to offer, I'd stick to less busy times for the most ideal visits. ___________ (#1) Hold your breath for 6 minutes. I came to porch swing club for the Wednesday trivia nights. I thought the trivia night was really well done. The format was 8 groups of 5 questions each and they have their own point system for each question. Vibes were great and every participating table was well engaged. They had a few tap beers on hand that were decently priced. Parking is a bit tough if you can't find a spot in their tight lot, but alternative street parking isn't too hard to come by. First time visit. Sat 12 noon, not too early but maybe a little. Place has its own lot which is really nice, plenty of parking and once inside plenty of tables inside and out. Cool vibe to the place, not a dive bar but not to fancy either...friendly and inviting. Greeted when we walked in and also when we left. Not to many staff as it wasn't very busy so not sure if the bar would of become packed/busy how the staff would of handled it. We came for the crawfish as it is crawfish season, waitstaff took our order and we had our food within 10 mins. They do have a full menu if you have someone in your group that doesn't want crawfish. Crawfish price today was $7.99 per lb, corn and taters are extra. Hot and seasoned very well...great flavor. The only thing I can complain about is the fact that they don't have sweet tea, now they do offer sweet tea made per glass using cold unsweet tea and simple syrup but I passed....sweet tea is never good when you take unsweet and add stuff to it.. Overall seems like a nice place to grab drinks, has trivia every Wednesday and happy hour and food specials throughout the week. We came for trivia (Wednesdays 7pm) one week but found that all the tables were reserved which was really annoying. Why wouldn't you save a few tables for walk ins? Anyways, we went somewhere else that night and came back next week with reservations. Our friend was able to make the reservation the day before we went. Food We ordered the chicken tenders w/fries and Caesar salad, both were good. The salad came with a good amount of grilled chicken but I wished there was more lettuce. Wednesdays food special is a steak or chicken for ~$10, I didn't try it but was tempted lol. Drinks I tried the Mexican candy shot, $5, it was good! Trivia On Wednesdays they have trivia night, 8 rounds, 5 questions each, with a picture round at the end. My friends seemed to go pretty often but it was my first time, and they commented that it was a lot harder than normal. Either way, I had a good time. Service Our waitress was great! This review pertains exclusively only to my Wednesday Night trivia experience. Been to at least 8-10 Wednesday trivia nights and can whole-heartedly say it's a lot of fun. They start at around 7pm or just after and would highly recommend calling in advance for a reservation for a table indoors unless you're cool with sitting outside. Parking can be pretty tight so definitely recommend getting there early... like 20-30min early. Or at least have someone get there early to snag a table and wait for people who aren't staying for trivia to leave. In terms of food/service, it can definitely be slow because they're definitely understaffed for the amount of people who can show up during these nights. But since trivia usually runs for over 2 hours and people are mostly just there to have a good time and have a few drinks and food, I personally didn't mind. Servers are friendly despite running around doing everything. My trivia group usually gets a pitcher or two of ziegenbock which is happy hour priced until I think 8pm? It's always a good time. The chicken tenders and fries have been the only food items I've gotten. They're standard, but great fuel for trying to churn out answers to the trivia questions. Came here with a bunch of girlfriends for their Christmas Bingo in December. It was a blast! I hear they also do trivia nights regularly. The Christmas setup was amazing! Each corner was setup for a cool photo-op with a phone holder and light ring! Definitely make reservations ahead of time. They were completely booked out. Our server was great. She would come by often to check on us and grab our drink orders. The Christmas themed drinks were fun but looked better than they tasted. I loved that they had non-alcoholic themed drinks as well. When the Jalepino poppers turned up I was disappointed as they were pretty lame..... 6 poppers for $7.0. I wanted to drink up and go and eat somewhere else, but my partner wanted to stay and have pizza. Based on the Jalepino poppers I didn't hold out much hope on the pizza. Staff is nice but service was quite slow. Had to ask for water multiple times and the food took a very very long time to actually get to the table. The food itself was a hit or miss. If you're coming here to eat, definitely go for the pizzas. My husband got the Enron pizza and said it was solid. I got a sandwich and did not like much. The fries also were okay. Porch Swing is one of the "less Washington-like" bars on Washington. Make sense? Meh, well let me see if I can explain. I've been coming here for years, and I appreciate both Porch Swing and Front Porch for its simplicity. It's laid back, meaning you can - and should - venture out on a beautiful day wearing sandals/flip flops; throw on some sunnies, a ball cap and bring your dog. Keep it casual. During crawfish season, it's a great spot for Saturday/Sunday day drinking, offering up mudbugs from noon-7pm (or til they run out). I actually enjoyed a couple of pounds of their crawdads a couple Saturdays ago and thoroughly enjoyed 'em. At around $5 a pound, spicy and decent sized, I'd certainly come back again. They also offer it on Tues/Thur 6-10pm. Come the fall/football season, Monday's are a busy night due to the two-dollar pints and .25-cent wings from 5pm til close. Service at the bar is typically average, but if you snag a seat outside, the ladies sure know how to take care of your group. Drinks and food are non-stop. Music, well, I'm not a big fan of the selection patrons pick for the electronic jukebox; I guess it's more reason to bring cash. There's lots of parking, more than other bars in the area, but it always fills up fast.
