I've driven past Porky's BBQ countless times on my way to Moonrise Ridge Mercantile and finally stopped in -- what a mistake it was waiting so long! The brisket sandwich was lean and amazing, the fries and the mac and cheese was absolutely perfect. The owners came out personally and brought us their ribs to try along with their grandma's recipe pasta salad -- both excellent. The char on those ribs was spot on, perfect consistency in every bite. Stopped to visit family in oOak Grove and they took us to this hidden gem that is only open on weekends. By far it was my favorite BBQ spot while in Missouri. We bought the meal with some of each meat. The ham, sausage and pulled pork were excellent. Ribs and turkey were very tasty as well. I enjoyed their Mac-n-cheese. I actually bought an additional side of it for the table. You ordered at the counter and served yourself with drinks and other needs. We came here as a large group with a few kids and about 5 adults (though one person did not eat the meat). We ended up getting a few options for dessert, including cheesecake and the red velvet cake. All were very tasty, though we were sad they were out of the peach cobbler. The sampler plate was very generous and had all different types of meat and there were different sauces that we could choose from at the side as well. They also provided a bag of burger buns for us to use. For the price of around $65 plus tip, the amount of food, drinks, and desserts we received was very good and we were glad we came here to get a taste of Missouri bbq, which was smoked l, dry, and had unique sauces. It's one of those places that, if you live close you think it's decent, worth your Friday, Saturday, or Sunday (during the limited time it's open). Burnt ends, shrug. Pulled pork, shrug. So, if you read my reviews on BBQ restaurants you will see I can be pretty finicky. But it's really not that hard. Keep the place clean. Service with a smile. Serve the best food you can. If you do well on those three things then I appreciate the effort and I will let others know. Porky's crushed it. I've driven by dozens of times and it's usually closed. This is because they shut the lights off when they run out. Pretty simple. Well, I FINALLY got to give them a go. First impression. Dining room was clean. Updated. And has BBQ themed decorations that make sense. Think John Wayne meets Chris Kyle. Also, there's a sign on the wall that tells you to throw your paper goods away when you're done. Not that this shouldn't even need to be said as that's what my momma taught me to do. I assume the sign is there because not e erroneous had a momma like mine and they need directions. Ordering was easy. The menu board was clear. Prices were fair. So ordering was as simple as that. The person taking my order was pleasant and patient. I ordered the large sampler that comes with three sides. Two are a must have if you a trying a BBQ restaurant for the first time; beans and potato salad. The third was my wife's choice...pasta salad. I ordered macaroni salad and both the employee and my wife "gently ]" (as only a good wife and her new best friend will do, corrected me. Ok, Ok...I get it. The food: The large sampler comes with ribs, pulled pork, brisket, turkey ham, and something they call Cajun sausage. The ribs were tasty, tender, and pulled clean from the bone (tip of the hat for a place that takes the time to properly prep their ribs). Could use a little more rub for my taste but not a complaint...more of an observation. The pulled pork was incredible. Just the right amount of bark, moist, and it was pulled vs. chopped. Kudos! The brisket followed suit. Nice pink smoke ring and very tender. The hame was sliced thin and delicious. Smoking hame can be tricky because it can get too salty quickly. This was not the case here. It was really good. The turkey was very good too. Even my wife, who doesn't eat turkey very much, said it was really good. My only complaint is the Cajun sausage. It's not to my liking at all. It's more of a large hot dog that has some kind of weird jalapeño injection or something. No smoke at all. It's a hard pass for me. Would love to see them offer traditional smoked sausage. There is no doubt these guys would get it right. There us sides were above expectations too. I suppose they might buy it pre-made. If so, they did a phenomenal job of hiding it. But they sure tasted like they were home-made. The beans were a little ho-hum when I first tasted them. Almost pork and beans vibe going on. But the longer you held them in your mouth the obvious smokiness comes on and there is a distinct BBQ sauce flavor that comes marching through. It was awesome. The potato salad had large chunks of potato and it is a deviled egg & mustard combination that fits me perfectly. I didn't eat any of the pasta salad but my wife did and she definitely approved. I admit I'm a bit of a BBQ snob. When a joint doesn't get it right or even try I will call them out. Unfortunately, there are too many of those these days. But not Porky's. This out of the way place with "get it while we have it" hours really deserves to be recognized. Fair prices, great service, clean restaurant, and phenomenal food. What more can you want? I finally got around to trying this spot and it exceeded all expectations! This is destination BBQ. As the name implies, this is a great place for pork. The pulled pork has excellent flavor. The Cajun sausage has nice texture and flavor. But then there's the ribs. I'm usually more of a spare ribs guy and so when I say that these babyback ribs might be the best ribs in KC, that's saying something! They're thick, meaty, the perfect texture, with a nice rosy smoke ring, and an exquisite bark. They're just so rich and perfect. The Turkey has good flavor. For me, if there is a weakness, it's the beef cuts. Stick to the pork and Turkey dishes! The beans are meaty and fantastic. The white cheddar make is hearty, gooey, and perfect. The pasta salad goes heavy on the pickles but is nice and refreshing. This is a great space with excellent service and fantastic food. I almost always get carry-out at this little restaurant because we don't live very far. They are only open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday so a person has to keep that in mind. Their pork baby-back ribs are, in my opinion, the best around. Their side dishes and sandwiches are pretty tasty too. So sad... Porky's was my "go-to" 4 bbq in KC: as q39 is a bit of a trek, and always very busy. However, with this economy driving up $$$, $40 for 2 sm sandwiches shared beans, bag of chips and 2 drinks is 2x what it used to be. Furthermore, the serving size and quality has noticeably diminished. I sincerely don't believe this is on the family, but outside circumstances: small business is being squeezed to a brink that makes the hard working person unable to succeed, as they once could in this country. I can only hope that sanity returns to this country and good people (such as those operating Porky's) can return their business to the quality and fair value it once was. read more

Still one of the best local spots for bbq on the southeast side of KC. They sell out if there is a football game so order early. They have an excellent pulled pork and smoked ham sandwich. So if you're from Missouri I don't feel they have ever had good bbq. Meat is mushy and steamed. Once and a while you find a bbq where it's smoked into ham. This was one of those places . It was dead on a Saturday which makes me suspicious of all these great reviews. No one cares for ham more than a couple times a year. I have tried 3 of this type around here and never before in my 59 years. I was always afraid that if I drove east on Colbern past State Route 7, I'd end up in a lake or fall off the edge of the Earth, which would absolutely suck because the cellphone reception there is terrible. As it turns out, there is no lake or end of the world at the end of Colbern; there's just a small BBQ joint called Porky's. Porky's is one of those family-owned restaurants where the father, mother, and son come in every day and eventually grow bitter and angry from the repeated process of slicing meat for members of the general public. While they cook their beef perfectly, it ends up tasting quite bland. Unfortunately, their BBQ sauces don't add enough interesting flavor to compensate. They offer above-average baked beans (although not as good as Fiorella's / Jack Stack), with giant clumps of beef brisket wads floating around like roving asteroids. There are plenty of dessert options, none of which I ordered because they all seemed to be variations of "Costco cheesecake with smashed up candy crud on the top of it." They do not cook / offer french fries, which is quite disconcerting. I believe this is mostly due to their kitchen being the size of a coat closet (albeit a very clean coat closet). When I ate there, the father and son food preparation team seemed upset they had to spend another Friday cramped together with the cashier, the wife (she was wife of the husband, not the son. That would just be gross). The positive side of working in the world's tiniest kitchen was that our order was filled within two seconds, possibly less. In summary, this is a good place to eat if you're in the neighborhood, the neighborhood of "way out in the middle of nowhere." I guess I can see justifying leaving State Route 7 to eat there, but that's as far as its radius should reach. Nothing very interesting here, just standard BBQ. Oh wait, they have a bunch of giant ceramic humanoid pigs. I guess that's interesting, in the sense that the pigs are promoting a BBQ joint. That's like going to an abortion clinic and being greeted by a bunch of large, cartoon fetuses screaming "Tee hee, abort me!" read more

This is our favorite ribs place. I was completely bummed when someone chose to drive their car thru the front door and they were closed for awhile. However, the fact that they reopened and I got a birthday lunch here was a highlight. The slab of baby back ribs are to die for and I'm usually not really a rib girl. I have recently gone mostly vegetarian but these ribs will conquer my vegetarian ways! I really like the cole slaw too. Disappointing since we detoured off of I 70 just East of Kansas City at the recommendation of Kansas City Magazine's " Top 10 BBQ" list. This is the first time we have had average bbq in The Kansas City area. Minimal flavor in the Brisket, bland potato salad (for $6.50/ serving) stale tasting bun and shockingly neither the iced tea nor the barbecue sauces were made in house. Sorry to have wasted the opportunity to enjoy the normal outstanding BBQ we typically enjoy on our way through Kansas City. Small old building that used to be an old grocery store. Pretty clean and well taken care of. The kitchen is IMMACULATE!!!! Not a spot in the whole place. Bathrooms were pretty clean, men's smelt a little. The pulled pork is really moist and decadent. I had to ask for buns, bcuz they don't serve bread. All the sides are sold separately. The ribs were burnt and dry, the potato salad is excellent. The BBQ beans are great. It's an ok place to eat but seriously leaves you wanting. Everytime i am in KC I have to try a new BBQ joint. We had lunch here today. It is a pretty typical hole in the wall BBQ joint from a decor perspective - fine with me. Put the money in the food! We had the sampler platter with turkey, ham, pulled pork, brisket, sausage and Pork ribs. The sides were beans, potato salad and coleslaw. I had some of all the options and it was all. The ribs, pulled pork and ham were the meat standouts. The turkey was moist and tender. I thought the beans were just one step or so short of Jack Stack. The potato salad is a tad sweet, bt very good. I think they get most everything right. I would definately go back. And go back again I did, just a week later. It was as good the second time as the first. I am officially a big fan. I put them at 4.5 stars. If I liked their beans as well as Jack Stack (they are good, just not as good I'm my mind) I would give them 5 stars. Love this BBQ. I drive 25 minutes to pick it up, driving past all lees summit BBQ places. The owner is a chef who cares about his craft, as he will not serve leftovers from the day before, and reheat them. Because of this, they run out of certain meats in the evening.
