Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que -- The Rocket Pig Was Worth the Trip!…read more My oh my, Joe's lived up to the hype! This place was your typical BBQ stop, classic interior, simple and the smells whoa! After settling into our Airbnb, my wife and I needed dinner. We arrived around 8:15 PM and there were STILL 15-20 people ahead of us. At that hour, seeing a line told me we were probably in the right place. I planned to keep things simple: Just get a pulled pork sandwich. Then I saw the Rocket Pig. Pulled pork, BBQ glaze, bacon, pepper jack cheese, BBQ mayo and fried jalapeños. I at least showed some restraint and ordered the regular instead of the jumbo. Rocket Pig -- 10/10! This thing was outstanding. Smoky, cheesy, a little spicy, messy and loaded with flavor. My taste buds were tingling! While standing in line, we struck up a conversation with two guys from Chicago who told us people come to Joe's for the meat and the sides generally take a back seat. Since I'm definitely a "side guy," I had to find out for myself. The BBQ beans were a disappointment -- 4/10 for me. They simply didn't match the quality of everything else. My wife went with the regular pulled pork sandwich and, after getting a recommendation from one of the employees, ordered the cornbread. Winner! 10/10. Then came the banana pudding. We were told, "Don't pass on it." Melissa, who took our order, said there were only three left. DONE. Give us one! Banana pudding -- 10/10. It may honestly be some of the best banana pudding I've ever tasted. Creamy, rich and topped with crushed Heath Bar. I seriously considered getting back in line and buying the other two for later. In hindsight, I probably should have! We were also told that during the World Cup the line stretched outside and wrapped around the building, with people waiting more than two hours. After eating here, I understand why. Fortunately, our wait was only about 20 minutes, and it was absolutely worth it. Would I return? Without hesitation. But this is Kansas City, and there are still more BBQ joints I need to try! If you're visiting KC, Joe's belongs on your list. And if you like a loaded BBQ sandwich, GET THE ROCKET PIG! Food: Rocket Pig: 10/10 Cornbread: 10/10 Banana Pudding: 10/10 BBQ Beans: 4/10 Overall:

The casual, counter-service setup has a true neighborhood BBQ joint feel, and it's easy to see why both locals and visitors recommend it. The restaurant is especially known for its ribs and burnt ends, and it's common for popular items to sell out later in the day, so arriving early is a smart idea. The barbecue was outstanding. The meat was tender, smoky, and packed with flavor, with the perfect balance of bark and juiciness. Every bite tasted like it had spent hours in the smoker, and the house barbecue sauce complemented the meat without masking its natural flavor. Portions were generous, making it an excellent value for the quality you receive. The sides were just as enjoyable and rounded out the meal nicely. Everything was served hot and fresh, and the fast-moving counter service kept the line moving efficiently even when the restaurant was busy. Overall, Slap's BBQ delivers exactly what people hope to find when they come to Kansas City for barbecue--authentic smoked meats, generous portions, and a laid-back atmosphere. Whether you're a local or visiting for the first time, this is a barbecue destination that's well worth experiencing.

Some background: I've been a few times now, but never under good circumstances. The first time I was at their food truck right when they opened and they were short on a few items. When I got home the sides weren't great, but I kind of chalked it up to them not being fully ready for me. The second time I went, in contrast I was probably their last diner in their newly opened space. I had a friend with me who had just come off the plane and needed a late dinner. The food was good, but again they were out of a bunch of things we wanted to try and I wasn't blown away. Now, my husband and I made the trip over to their location in Columbus Park about a month ago during regular dining hours and had an absolutely incredible bbq dinner from start to finish. The server was amazing, the food was insanely tender and delicious, and we left so so so full in the best way possible. This was what I had heard from others and what I was expecting and I was so happy to be able to report that they do live up to the hype, and if you catch them on an off day, give some grace and try again as this local spot is worth it. Oh, and get the cheese dip with bbq in it - I forget what kind of meat that features but holy hell was that great.

But there's really no excuse to let patrons stand at the door for 10 minutes without getting acknowledged that we walked in. There were three empty tables and every server walked right past us and didn't even look at us, almost like if they ignored us we'd just leave, and I would've left if I wasn't trying to get our out of the country relatives who were in town the "best bbq in kc" . I had to say something to an employee just to sit down but the service didn't get much better, we felt slow and ignored most of the time. THE FOOD WAS AMAZING!!! Gotta be some of the best BBQ in the country!!! If you're a BBQ lover you gotta give it a try I just suggest going during off hours in the late afternoon on a weekday..

Good BBQ, Great Service -- Just Didn't Wow Us…read more When you're in Kansas City, you have to eat BBQ! After an incredible meal at Joe's KC, we decided to give Jack Stack Barbecue a try. First impressions were excellent. The restaurant is beautiful and definitely has a more upscale atmosphere than your typical BBQ joint. I ordered the brisket and burnt ends with fries. Both meats were good -- tender, flavorful and well prepared -- but neither really left me wanting more. There was nothing wrong with them; they just didn't have that memorable factor I was hoping for from Kansas City BBQ. My wife ordered the loaded baked potato with burnt ends. Her opinion was similar: good, but probably not something she would order again. Our server, Adam, was excellent. He was friendly, attentive and offered several recommendations. He suggested the cheesy corn bake, which sounded fantastic. Unfortunately, that one missed the mark for us. It reminded me more of mac & cheese with corn mixed into it than the creamy corn casserole I had imagined. Overall, this was a good meal with excellent service in a beautiful restaurant. I can understand why Jack Stack has such a following, but for us it just didn't have that "I can't wait to come back" factor. I'm glad we tried it, but next time we're in Kansas City, I think we'll continue exploring some of the other BBQ legends. In hindsight...maybe we should've tried Gates! ‍

No, this is more of a sit-yourself-down kind of place, instead of being a make-your-way-to-the-bar-for-yet-another-drink kind of place. But they serve up some Joe's Kansas City BBQ, so you know they've got a reason to pull you in. Nothing says Kansas City quite like smoked meats & fabulous sauces, so get comfy & sample a Z-Man. There is plenty else on the menu, but if you're vegan or vegan-ish, then good luck or maybe have a cheat day. The BBQ is fantastic and Ice House has added their own bar & grille twists, so you have options beyond smoked meats. Seating is pretty good, and with both a wraparound bar and table service, there are plenty of options. As is the norm these days, there are screens in all directions, so you just don't miss a single moment of sportsball if that's your jam. P&L is a jammed up place when events are happening, so if you can find yourself a spot to sit and enjoy, then that's a win. County Road offers that and more, and it's only real knock is the service levels, which can be slow at busy times. But hey, if you have a seat and maybe a drink, then wait just a few extra minutes for servers to plow their way through the bar crowd. Definitely worth it for the BBQ alone.

We didn't get any drinks until almost being there for an entire hour. The server came and told some lie about how the computer reset and the kitchen lost our order, AS other tables who were seated after us got their food. The server said he had to "re-take" our order. Then the food came out really quick after that. The manager did not apologize or acknowledge our experience. Every time we asked the hostess what was taking so long they just said "it's because the server has tables outside." We went outside while waiting for our food to see no tables were even occupied outside. The food wasn't that good at all. They didn't offer any compensation for the mishap. The server failed to split the checks correctly. And to top it all off the live music was turned up waaaaay too loud to where it wasn't even an enjoyable atmosphere. We were all visiting and were told this place was good. They weren't even busy, lots of staff just standing around. I don't appreciate the business model of lying to your customers instead of taking accountability. Coming from someone who has worked in the service industry that was an absolutely disturbing experience for spending $450 on food. I am also adding that I emailed the owner as he asked me to below this review and it's been almost a week and I haven't heard anything back from him. Update 9/18/26: it's been a full week of emailing back a fourth with the owner and the only way he tried to fix this review was offering me an "outside patio" table. This restaurant does not care for their guests whatsoever. I tried to be nice and think $450 of service for it to come out 2 1/2 hrs late and the food below standards for KC and this is a common issue you see growing with this restaurant. If you get Alfonso as a server ask for someone else. He lies to you and is not professional. He should have notified management and offered some kind of compensation after what my party went through.
