Beans were very sweet with lots of meat. I love the gritty atmosphere - please never change it. The smoker is behind the counter and adds to the fabulous atmosphere. I'm not going to pretend I'm a KC BBQ expert, but as a visitor I thought this spot offered some of the best BBQ I've ever eaten. The restaurant itself is bleeding with history. The walls lined with articles and rewards, LC's "office" exactly where I assume he left it in the dining area, a beautiful portrait of him looking proud and wise overlooks the entire restaurant. The pit master cut through a thick layer of smoke in the air with precision and no wasted movements. The vault-like BBQ stacked to the top with various meats. A line stretched into the doorway. This place is the real deal. I went with the combo platter, which included 6 ribs, my choice of two meats and a side for $25. It was a heaping pile of food and the price felt beyond justified. The meat was so smoky and so good. I absolutely loved their sauce and was glad I got two extra to dip in. I usually like my BBQ dry, but this sauce was like a drug I never had before. Perfectly sweet, spicy and acidic. I couldn't stop eating it. The service was friendly despite it being almost time for them to close. You can feel the heat when the smoker doors open -- I can't imagine it being the easiest environment to work in. These people hustle. I'm not sure the next time I'll be in Kansas City, but the next time I'm there, one of my first stops will be at LC's. read more

First time here.... Small BBQ restaurant. Customer service is zero frills, inside is smokey AF and low key eating inside is a potential health hazard due to the smoker being inside. We were in KC and were recommended to immediately go to LC's for lunch. Upon walking in, we were greeted by LCMs granddaughter and owner of the restaurant. She gave us great recommendations and suggested the burnt ends and baked beans. The food was made fast, the sauce was amazing, and I loved the area they had set up decorated for LC's memory. Traveling from Texas to Iowa and wanted some Missouri BBQ. Found this place because of the 4 star reviews. We showed up right before they opened, they already had 6 people waiting for them to open. We ordered the mixed plate...short end ribs, beef burnt ends and chicken wings. We got one side of baked beans. Rating each meat: burnt ends 9 out of 10, short end ribs 7 out of 10 and chicken wings 1 out of 10. BBQ sauce is very sweet. Everything is covered in this sauce. The burnt ends out shined everything else. The wings were probably cooked a couple days prior and reheated. Overall, I would go again but would stay away from certain meats. This is the classic hole in the wall BBQ establishment. It's not the cleanest but it's not filthy either. The BBQ is very good and the prices are very reasonable but the amount of BBQ sauce applied or given with each order is Skimpy. There is no sauces on any table so if you love to try the different sauces available your out of luck unless you're willing to buy a bottle which they proudly offer. You can buy a very small BBQ sauce with your order for about 65 cents with the tax. If you would like to try let's say the spicy sauce then you will have to buy a full bottle. I wasn't happy with the sauce situation and will probably not come back. Most Barbecue places have ample sauce options for you to try and enjoy with your meal. Not this place! The owner replied saying that additional sauce is available at the counter if you ask. I did ask and was told that I had to buy more sauce. This bothers me more now because they seem to be undercutting the meals quality. Maybe they need to tell the person behind the counter because I was told that I had to buy any additional sauce and I did buy one because frankly my barbecue meal needed it. read more

LC's is a small, dim, and HOT restaurant with a sort of stickiness in the air. The menu is simple but a bit difficult to make out. I ordered a three mixed meat platter with of ribs, brisket, and pork burnt ends. Plus I added sausage. The ribs were a slightly charred on top and the meat didn't slide off the bone or have an easy chew like a well cooked rib should. The sausage had a strange texture and I'm not sure it was even in a casing. I left it alone after one bite. The brisket had a nice smokiness and was sliced very thin, almost delicious style. In retrospect I think that's good because I imagine it would not have been tender otherwise. The port burnt ends were a mess and I didn't really finish them either. LC's was a bit sloppy to me and I can't recommend and certainly wouldn't return for myself. read more

I was first introduced to burnt ends at LCs years ago. I was always a fan until today my sister and I split a $34 three meat combo (beef burnt ends, half chicken and turkey). The chicken was only a breast and a wing (where's the leg and thigh) and like the burnt ends was burnt beyond being edible. The turkey was ok. My sister said it tasted like lighter fluid and some pieces were a darkish gray?! The beans were good and the potato salad ok. 5 stars are very rare for me, I wish I could do 4.5. LC's is legit Bar B Q, looking at the pit the itself, you know you are in for treat. Because of the out of the way location, we had trouble spotting the place, but we looked a few blocks down the road and there was a huge plume of smoke, and we knew we found it, we just followed the smoke. I'm sure that pit is as old as the building, even the awnings are stained with smoke. We had the brisket and burnt ends, which we took to go, so I didn't eat it until I got back home to Omaha. I will make that 3 hour dive just for the BBQ, it was that good. So sorry Jack Stack and Gates, I have found a new love. The decor is old style diner homey, nothing fancy at all, but the food is off the chain! I don't want to seem like I'm romanticising one type of bbq experience over another, so I'll start there. This is the second bbq spot we've gone to on our week in Kansas City, and this is a spot that felt more low key than the other place. Not many people inside--it was almost 1pm when we walked in. Seemed like a couple locals, a couple tourists like us, and smoke. A lot of smoke. Not the kind that you see but the kind that i can still smell on my clothes an hour later, that smells like i was actually on my smoker at home. My kid and i went in there and had a plate of beef burnt ends (they serve pork ones too). It came with three slices of bread. Two were on the bottom of the meat, which is the best slice of bread. There's no better slice of bread than the one that is under bbq. Period. We also got an order of onion rings, which were really good but we honestly only had a couple of them. Because the meat was the main event. I spoke to the cook afterwards and said you could give me 20 briskets and i couldn't come close to what you just made. He was modest and just said he'd been cooking a long time. Felt like every bite had some bit of the tangy sauce, rub, burnt goodness, rendered fat, and just a touch of sweet. We didn't add any sauce or anything. We can only vouch for the beef burnt ends. They also had rib tips, short ends, long ends, chicken, etc. Soft drinks, Gatorade, beer. Lady at the counter was very kind and helpful. We'll probably go to a couple other spots while we're here, but i can't imagine we'll have a better bite read more

I have a cousin named Jake, and Me and Jake have spent countless days together while he's smoked and BBQ'd legendary meats. Everyone has that uncle or cousin who once or a few times a year there are get togethers that everyone will pull up to have fun but really...it's because of their mouthwatering Grill mastering meat smoking skills that everyone remembers. THATS LC's!! It's not everyday you come across BBQ like this. It's not the Gourmet restaurant whose dishes are well plated and where they make sure everything is well round (nutritional wise)....its better than that. It's the plate you fill up at a Family BBQ where you can't stop eating and you keep going back for more and more and more...the sun is out (maybe the clouds have rolled in because of the summer heat), you've probably ate 1-2lbs of brisket, ribs, and pulled pork, your off a few Cokes and Dr peppers, you've tripled back to the meats with no shame and now your sitting in a lawn chair squinting and looking around at the grass/trees/clouds/kids/water/dogs, you kinda of turn around slightly in your chair without wanting to move much because your so relaxed but you've got to keep an eye on how much meat is left and if anyone is goin back to it because you've got to pile up a mean plate to throw in the fridge for the night and next day or two... there's not a single thing you'd say was wrong with the meat but Jake or Unk or your boy thinks theres something they could've done better yet you know for a fact "bruh that's the best BBQ I've had"..... If LCs was closer I'd be here over all the others in the city no lie!!! OMG, this place blew me away a second time after many years apart. The burnt ends are one of a kind, really nice bark and super tender and juicy. It blows other BBQ places out of the park with their burnt ends and ribs. It's as if the smoker they used is a smoker pressure cooker because the flavor is like no other. We were excited to visit the legendary LC's! There was a short wait to order and another for our food. No big deal. The atmosphere here is fun. Everyone was excited to be having BBQ at LC's. We had a short end of ribs, half and half burnt ends, brisket, beans and slaw. We were told that this was the place to go for a FANTASTIC burnt ends and great brisket. I agree. Those are the only things that I would have again. The ribs were burnt and dry. The beans were soupy in far too sweet. The coleslaw was lacking and bitter. Vernon's were the star of the show. The beef and the pork burnt ends were both magnificent! Totally worth the trip and worth a repeat visit. The brisket was the sliced, very thin, but it was tender and delicious--swimming in sauce, which was also wonderful. The staff at LC's was helpful and kind. Looks like there were smoked once and then cut and served rather than cooked again in the sauce and allowed to burn and crisp up a bit on the outside while staying tender. First KCMO experience did not disappoint. Holy smokes. Tasty, smoky, sweet, rich, satisfying. Generous portions, friendly staff. I ordered pickup and the process was so easy. Parking is easy. Even the bottles of soda are just the right ice cold. 10/10 would recommend. Run here and don't think twice. The kind of local establishment that makes you want to get out and experience new things. We def don't have bbq like this back in NorCal. The food here is proof that American Traditional Cuisine is worth preserving. Really solid BBQ at reasonable prices in an unassuming location if you're willing to subject your lungs to the smoke inhalation in this place. Other reviews have said similar things here, but I really have no idea how these people work at this location day in and day out without getting emphysema. If I could do my visit over I'd have picked a closer table to the door to get some air, but overall I was pretty happy with everything we ordered at LC's. Ribs were fall off the bone tender and well seasoned. The turkey sandwich was smoky and flavorful. The burnt ends were just the right amount of burnt while still being juicy. I appreciated the super casual atmosphere and the fact that while this place was busy, it wasn't a wait in a long like type of situation. The beer situation is also super casual, just grab whatever you want from the refrigerator. As others have noted, walk extremely carefully into and out of the bathroom if you need to use it during your time here. It is super slippery, and I saw more than one person almost totally wipe out during my visit here. read more

I grew up in Independence, MO but moved away and settled in SoCal after a 20 yr USN career. We took every opportunity to visit my family back home and ever time the boys had to go to LCs. The boys are in their 20s, but still demand I order cases of sauce and bring home burnt ends when I go back home.
