Great little place in the southern part of Kauai, Hawaii called Port Allen Sunset Bar and Grill. Just finished going to the Waimea Canyon and wanted to find a place to eat lunch. Came across the Sunset Grill. We sat outside in the covered patio area and it was actually very nice. The food was excellent and the service was great. Our waitress was friendly and very attentive. Drive by Port Allen after hiking and this restaurant looked great on Yelp. Plenty of parking. Arrived just as Happy hour ended (6). Did see the sunset and had miles: mine one with likikoi, hubby's with Jameson Orange. Both yummy. Had the seafood curry which was packed with fish and a delicious curry. Big portion, and we shared. Let me start by saying that the grilled shrimp tacos with the wasabi aoli are UNBELIEVABLY good. Quite literally the best shrimp tacos I've ever eaten, and I love shrimp tacos. Got the teriyaki broiled chicken and shrimp. The chicken says seasoned and broiled but it's actually breaded and fried. It's terrible especially when you're expecting one thing and get another. Just feel like they should have said that ahead of time. Gave the shrimp to my sister and she seemed to like them. I just ended up not eating since if I ordered something else at that time everyone would have been waiting for me. Just don't lie on your menu. It saves everyone's time. We were promptly greeted and shown to a table in a covered patio area. Seating inside is limited to the bar as I remember. One server took care of the half-dozen tables occupied during our visit. I got the burger, which was very good, but I cannot recall what my wife ordered. We enjoyed the food, but the atmosphere was a downer for me. The general location definitely leans towards industrial, and the restaurant's ceiling fans were heavy duty warehouse fans attached in DIY fashion. One of them was making quite a racket too. From the traffic coming in and out, it appeared this was a popular spot for locals who wanted to watch the game at the bar. I gave it an "OK" rating because overall that's how it hit me. First of all, our server, Iesha was the epitome of Kauai: sweet, helpful, and so kind. She made lots of recommendations for how to prepare our catch and what to have with it. Everything that she recommended was spot on. We had fish and chips, seared aku (skipjack), and grilled aku. They were all awesome, but my favorite was definitely the seared aku. First, service was great and friendly and second, the options and specials were plentiful. I had the New York steak and shrimp with fries and enjoyed every bite. My medium steak was cooked perfectly and was tender. The shrimp were fresh and had a nice seasoning. My husband had the fresh Poke Bowl special and loved it. They'll also wrap it in plastic wrap as the lid as they don't have lids. The service was fast and good and the location is pretty good. I lived on Kauai for 20 years and found this place by accident one day when I was exploring my new home. They have, although expensive, the best ribeye steak I've ever had! The thing is massive and covers most of your plate! The French fries are my favorite ever. Though a couple of their other dishes are just so-so, most of them ate awesome. If you want a great hamburger/cheeseburger? This is it! The drinks here are great and they accommodate special requests if you ask. For example my weird dad likes to order a "martini but hold the vermouth" which always confuses the new wait staff lol. I usually have to "translate" for him and say "Bring a martini glass with your best vodka with olives". Most of the wait staff know us now and don't need the translation. Can be really really busy during peak hours though they do have both indoor and outdoor seating. Call ahead for a reservation if you need to eat at a specific time. I wish I still lived on Kauai but live is expensive these days. read more
