This review is about their gift shop at the entrance of restaurant. First, I'm not into trinkets but the kindness and "second mile" attitude of Carnation needs to be highlighted. She was kind, helpful and not pushy about purchasing anything. That in and of itself to maintain such a kind behavior in the middle of all the tourists should be commended. She's helpful and pointed us in the right direction to get an emergency charge for our cell phones. Stop in before or after having a meal or drinks at their restaurant upstairs. The atmosphere and oceanfront views here are absolutely worth checking out. It's a great place to relax, enjoy the scenery, and have a few drinks. Speaking of drinks, the cocktails were excellent and definitely the highlight of our meal. My wife ordered the garden salad with shrimp, and I had the chicken chimichurri sandwich. Unfortunately, the food was pretty mediocre overall. After a few bites, my wife found a caterpillar in her salad, which immediately ruined her appetite--especially considering it was a $30 salad. We normally aren't the type to complain, but we mentioned it to our waitress, Mia. She was incredibly kind, handled the situation professionally, and promptly removed the salad from our bill. We really appreciated how she took care of us, so shout out to Mia for providing excellent service despite the unfortunate situation. My chicken sandwich wasn't anything special, although the chimichurri sauce itself was tasty. Overall, I'd recommend coming here for the incredible views, relaxing beach atmosphere, and great cocktails--but I'd probably look elsewhere if you're coming for the food. read more

This restaurant is one of our favorites because you get a great ocean view at a casual spot, for good prices! I had the seafood risotto and it was one of my favorite dishes on the entire trip! Everyone in our party loved their meal. I always get the dark nipple as a drink - it's basically a piña colada. Our waitress was welcoming and attentive. It looked like this was the only restaurant with a bar at this beach so our choices were limited. Luckily, we had a drink recommendation from a friend thats been there before so we already knew what to order. We sat at the bar and had a chat with the very nice bartender. The "Brown Nipple" drink was still available so that is what we ordered. Delicious! Honestly, I could have drank that all day. But...Im not rich enough to drop $15 a drink. So one each was all we got. We didnt order any food either because I had a taste for a Puka Hot dog downstairs. This place! Great location right across the street from the beach. Get a nice cold drink and get a fantastic meal. You can listen a live music while you're there. I'm a big fan of Korean ribs. We've dined here every time we visit the island so we were expecting the dinner to be as amazing as other vacations here. Aloha! I made an attempt to eat here on a Tuesday night, and after being told 1.5 hours wait, although it looked great... we passed... and walked across the street to check out the infamous honu. Be respectful here. They are resting. Please do not approach. I was visiting from Oahu and tried a couple of places, everyone was pretty busy for a Tuesday night so my group and I were just impatient, otherwise we would have stayed for sure. There was a 45 min wait for a table for two. We waited those whole 45 min so be prepared to wait because the hostess times are accurate. If there's space, you can walk up to the bar and order from there or have a drink while you wait. We got lucky and got seated on a table facing the beach, right around sunset. We ordered a flight of beers which you're able to customize. To eat we had the surf and turf (we chose the scallops and medium rare cooked steak), and the seafood risotto. I really enjoyed my risotto but gotta say, the rib eye steak was superb even though it looked more medium than medium rare. The scallops were also perfectly cooked. To finish off, we ordered Bob's favorite ice cream: coffee ice cream, macademia nuts, coconut, and chocolate cookie crust. All the flavors complemented each other and weren't overly sweet. We were visiting poipu beach and wanted to see some sea turtles. By the time we wrapped up with the beach, we stopped in at Brennecke's for a couple drinks. We sat at the bar and the bartenders Devon and Kimo were so helpful. They got us our drinks and even suggested some of the rums they were serving. I got a lava flow, which was a piña colada with strawberry puree. Devon and Kimo recommended us to try the cacao Koloa rum. It was served neat, but really could be a rum you sip. If you happen to be at beach near Brennecke's, definitely stop by for a happy hour drink! read more

The food was really well made and tasted great. The salads were definitely fresh. We had a great view of the beach and the breeze made the open design very cool on a hot day. Our server was a delight. Very knowledgeable and super attentive. Our only issue was with the hostess. We were a party of five, so it took a few minutes to seat us. Two six tops came open and we were the only large party. She got upset because she was going to seat us close to the bar but we asked her for the one next to the windows. Plus I wanted to be right across the street from the sea turtle viewing area on Poipu beach! We were seated right away and our server was great. It was only a few minutes until happy hour specials were over and she was able to get our drinks and apps order in! Our goddaughter who has celiac was with us so we asked about gluten free options. We got edamame for her and loaded nachos. Since they had a Father's Day surf and turf special, my hubby got that. I ordered the korean short ribs, the kids ordered burgers and a shrimp rice bowl. All the food was pretty good except the steak my husband got had no seasoning on it nor any type of char. The Korean ribs were tasty but a bit chewy. Had a very poor experience here with my family. I will say first that our server was great and that's why there's 1 star here, but everything else was a letdown. The ambiance was fine. We were seated by the window and it was very windy so do make sure to bring a hair tie. I heard that the sunset is nice at the tables but we ate food at 6:30pm so it was dark. For five people, our bill totaled to $300 and that was before tip. They told us it was Taco Tuesday and so 3/5 of us ordered tacos. We should have checked the price ahead of time but it was $35 per plate. The plate included two tacos and a side of salsa, a side of extremely salty pinto beans, and some stale chips. The fish was unseasoned and my family mentioned that these were some of the worst tacos they've ever had. My sister ordered a Caesar salad with shrimp. It was $13 for 5 pieces of shrimp and all of her lettuce was bad. The croutons she told me had come out of a bag. She didn't finish it and acknowledged she maybe shouldn't have ordered lettuce whole in Kauai. But still, a disappointment. I got the seafood risotto and I was pretty happy with it. The scallops and shrimp were good but I wasn't a huge fan of the ono fish, but that's just personal preference. Overall though a huge letdown for the family who had asked me to write this review following an extremely unsatisfactory experience. My mom found this place and was told it was stellar from this "everything Kauai" Facebook page. So just a fair warning to always come to check Yelp before taking any of their recommendations there. read more

Update: 5/24/25 Another visit to Brennecke's. From our experience at Brennecke's, the service is still great and the food is still very good. The consistency of great service and food is still present.. Ahi soba salad - 5/5 A very refreshing meal. Perfectly seared ahi over a bed of cold soba noodles. The sauce was soy with sesame oil, with maybe sweetened rice wine vinegar. The presentation of this salad is very impressive and very tasty! Korean Galbi - 5/5 A Very good selection. The Galbi meat was marinated perfectly unlike other places where they broil the shorter ribs and drizzle Galbi sauce on it. The short ribs were savory, tender and delicious! A definite recommendation! Fish & Chips - 5/5 The fish fillets were generous in portions. They were battered and fried to a light crisp texture. The fish fillets were tender, not dry and hard. The fries were crisp outside and soft interior. It's best to try and finish the fries before it cools off. From our experience, Brennecke's has been consistent in serving very good quality food and providing excellent table service. If you're in the Poipu area in Kauai, give Brennecke's a visit for breakfast, lunch, cocktails or dinner. read more

Had the best ono fish with pineapple coleslaw and my husband had the prime rib sandwich special. Both were very good. Our waiter Chase was excellent, personable and attentive. Ambiance was great. Been here 4 times now and love it. Have to add went a second time while during our visit to Kauai and had the Tuesday Tacos. Fish for me and carne asada for my hubby. They were good, but very pricey. Unfortunately, the Mai Tais were very week. We told our server and she said if we wanted stronger ones we have to order a different kind of Mai Tai. We said no. Lucked into a spot at the bar for dinner and we were able to enjoy friendly conversation with others who were waiting for tables, while getting get good service from the bar staff. I had the dinner special and even though I can't remember what it was now (should have written the review back on 10/16/25), I do know it was really good and several others near me, ended up ordering it after seeing my dish. This review is just for a kids burger meal that we got to to-go. The little one was hungry at the beach and this is conveniently located across the street within walking distance. Also a plus that no shoes or shirt were required for my to-go order, lol. The kids burger meal is actually sliders and we asked for cheese to be added. The food came out super fast (faster than the Puka Dog line outside that usually wraps around the building). The burgers and fries were fine, standard and kid-approved. Nothing fancy, no complaints. Nice casual spot right across the street from Poipu Beach. Have eaten here a few times previously and it was very solid. On this visit I had the most amazing salad- the summer salad is so good! It had watermelon, dragonfruit, goat cheese, macadamia nuts...that salad along with the coconut shrimp appetizer made for a perfect lunch after spending the morning hiking and swimming. Went here for my cousins birthday dinner, as we had been before and gotten yummy food. We had a reservation for all eleven of us, and they got us in on-time and provided excellent service. Our waitress really went above and beyond! Many many dishes were amazing, including: poke tacos, poke bowl, coconut shrimp, seafood risotto, soba with ahi, and the edamame. I ordered the crab cakes, but I wasn't super impressed. There was a lot of seasoning and not enough crab flavor, in my opinion. My wife loved them. My family has been crabbing since I was little so I have a high crab standard! My mango madness drink was incredible, though not super mango, more just like a pina colada. The lilikoi and mango margaritas did not taste like their fruits, but the lilikoi lemon drop and lychee martini really did. The Mai tais and tai chis were also enjoyed by my party. I'd definitely return, just wouldn't order the crab cakes again. They brought out a giant slice of mudslide deliciousness and sang happy birthday for my cousin too, and really made the evening memorable! read more

10/27/24 Stopped by Poipu simply to check out the beached turtles at the shore of Baby's Beach (I think that is what it's called because it's very shallow and protected by lava rocks on one side). I have always been curious about Brennecke's so Hubby & I decided to get a quick bite before heading back to our condo. We took a chance to walk in because we were quoted an hour wait if you wanted a seat overlooking the famous Poipu Beach. (Reservations are apparently highly recommended, it was somewhat of a "duh" moment for me). The lovely host suggested the bar (which was 1st come first serve). Score! Van was our server, friendly, cordial & attentive. Hubby ordered his chianti & I opted to get the Tempura Sushi for us to share. Surprisingly, the dish was ready in no time at all. The presentation on the tempura sushi was beautiful. In its usual fashion, wasabi and pickled ginger on the side accompanied the dish. It's perfect to share either as a main or an appetizer. It was tasty & savory, I liked the crispy fried exterior. Hubby's chianti is a bit light, medium bodied. There's free parking nearby, it can get very crowded in the summer months because it is also beach parking. The restaurant is on the 2nd floor accessible by stairs & elevator. There's a bar in the center & TVs play sports/news. There's a puka dog by stand on the first floor along with a merch/store that sell hats, shirts & other knick knacks. Short & sweet, great visit, would like to return to try other menu items & (note to self: make reservations), sit front & center to have the spectacular view of Poipu Beach. read more

The location is amazing (right across the road from a great snorkeling and turtle-watching beach and elevated so you get a great view of the water and/or sunset) and the service was pretty good. The food, however, was bland and overpriced. We had the fish and chips and sliders. The fish was a small portion, tasteless, dry, and served with the kind of fries that come right out of a frozen bag. It tasted like there was no salt or seasoning on either. The sliders were very basic. The "famous" Mai Thais had a decent flavor, but they were nothing special and they were very weak. The bill was over a $100 for one adult and two kids. Overall, I might go there again for a beer at the bar to watch the sun set. But that's about it. Brennecke's could be so great, but it seems like they need to do a total rework of their menu to bring the food up to expectations, given the price point. read more

Even though the dining room was slammed, our server took the time to provide some recommendations. We started with some homemade coconut shrimp and since it was Tuesday, we ordered some tacos. Food-wise, the offerings were solid and fresh. Drinks were a little weak, their signature mai-tai was not memorable but still drinkable. Location-wise, Brennecke's can't be beat.
