I love this place, and I have for years! Friendly baristas, a local-friendly bulletin board, and a great location in downtown Southport. My husband always comes here for his iced coffee (this year it was Japanese cold-brew, whatever that is!) with coconut syrup. I have tried many delicious things, but opted for an Italian soda this year. As nice as it is to sit and enjoy our beverages in the cool air conditioning, it's even more fun to stroll down the historic street down to the waterfront and enjoy our drinks in one of the waterfront swinging benches. Always a good cup of coffee. Seems like they could do a little better with the food offerings (and that would give them the 5th star from me) but one of my favorite things to do is go into PCJ on a nice weekend morning and get a big Latte and stroll down to the waterfront, sit on a bench and enjoy my coffee! Coffee is of good quality and consistent and the staff is always friendly and attentive. Service is fast! One of my steady stops downtown. read more

My wife and I tried this coffee shop for the first time this morning. Don't get me wrong it was good just not that home town coffee shop that we were use to and looking for on our vacation. The pastries in our opinion was better than the coffee. The coffee reminded us more of a Starbucks than a local roasted coffee shop. Good but more corporate feel. Port City Java is a franchise coffee shop located towards the Howe Street in Southport. Serving everyone's favorite drinks (and sometimes creating new drinks that become favorites), this is certainly a place to stop. Food Quality (+): One word - excellent. Port City Java does cold and hot drinks just the way they should be done; with carefulness, precision, and flavor. They also serve cookies, muffins, and other items you might find in a Starbucks or café. My personal favorites are the Black & Tan and the Mocha Shake. Port City Java claims that they use more espresso than other coffee shops, which I believe to be true. Note that the prices are comparable to places like Starbucks, being fairly high but worth it for the product. Great drinks, great food, great place. Environment (+): After getting your coffee, you'll need somewhere to enjoy it. Luckily, you have plenty of places to go. Inside the coffee shop it's typically very quiet, even with a lot of people. There are water fountains running to add to the serenity of the shop, which are a very nice addition. If you don't want to have your coffee inside, I highly recommend going to the end of Howe St for a fantastic view of the water. With a great view, your trip will be even more worth while. Service (-): Not horrible, but the only reason I'm not handing over a 5 star (that and I just don't like giving them out often). Staff can be friendly or rude, depending on who you're dealing with. You will need to wait a little while for your drink, however, so take a seat and wait for your name to be called. After a couple of minutes (or more with a large line), you'll get your drink and it'll be done correctly. Overall, could use some improvement. Overall, I'd say I'll be coming back to this place for a long time. With great coffee and food, and a nice view, it makes it worth the drive from Oak Island to Southport when I'm on vacation. Certainly a must-go for coffee lovers. WAYYYY better than Starbucks! read more

Quaint coffee shop in Southport - it's actually fairly large and has another open room for seating aside from the coffee room. It was packed on a NYE Sunday. They have food options and good coffee. I spent hours doing work by the window for some natural sunlight. Cute little spot off the main drive in downtown Southport - will definitely stop back in when I'm in town. read more

My wife ordered a drink that wasn't what she expected, and while we never complain, we couldn't help but ask if there was another drink they could make sure that would be better. We've been to Southport several times to enjoy the town and local family. Port City Java was one of our favorite places to hang out in the morning and have some coffee and maybe breakfast. This used to be a great neighborhood coffee shop. Not anymore. Was greeted with a blank stare and the cashier said nothing but " what's the name" and my total. The wifi was not working so I attempted to tell another employee who's response was " there are a lot of people on it" the only people were two people on their phones. Meh...service is always lacking. Coffee is luke warm or burnt. Burning the almond milk in my expresso drinks has been the latest trend. I've stop hosting meetings here and have not bothered to stopped in. Prices are more than Starbucks with any addition of Soy and Almond milk. This place used to have great service, friendly people and a helpful atmosphere. Not anymore! If you order in bulk for a group or church group, you better bring some muscle. They flat out will not help you with your order. Pick it up and take it out on your own. Not to mention, the coffee was way too strong. The attitude is, here is your order, get out. Very disappointed. While on our vacation we come to the cafe in SP on our first morning. Was not very satisfied the first visit. We decided to give it another chance one evening. Decided to check the hours prior to walking down there as it is the off season and some businesses have changed their hours. The hours online said it was open until 7:00pm. We walked several blocks to the cafe arriving at 6:05pm and their doors were locked. The hours on the door said they close at 7:00pm. The two workers inside didn't even acknowledge we were outside even though they were right by the door. I felt this was poor business and do not think we will be back or recommend them to other folks. I feel that if they decided to change their hours for the off season they need to make an update online and on their door as the other businesses have done. read more

After receiving disappointing coffee at a local breakfast restaurant, we were eager to get our hands on some really good coffee. Unfortunately, really good coffee evaded us during our time at Oak Island. We both ordered Cafe au Lait (my suggestion, gulp), which were watery at best. The employees were friendly, and the atmosphere was good, but unfortunately, a good coffeehouse must have good coffee. The sign behind the counter said "we do food". The real question is just what do they do to the food? Well, I was hungry and adventurous and decided to find out. It was not pretty and super small and just downright disappointing. Got half a club wrap. Basically 3 bites. All I tasted was bread. Packet of ranch sauce doubled the size of food on the plate. Pretty sad looking. I think they have an old vending machine out back from a Greyhound terminal from 1975 that they get the food out of. read more

In town, visiting. Thought I would write reviews of places I've been to before my Vivanse kicks in and I have to actually start working. :( So Port City Java is super nice. It's so fun to watch the trend of hipster coffee joins extend to the deep south. Fun fact: as I was coming in, they were playing The Sunday's "Here's Where the Story Ends," which was the song I had my first kiss to. (Before he dumped. I keep waiting for his male pattern baldness to kick in). Everyone behind the bar gets five stars for being just the friendliest people this side of the Mason Dixon. I've been coming down to Southport on a regular basis for over 3 years now and today is the FIRST time I've been to this coffee spot. I've been missing out! Coffee was pretty good, a little pricey (about $5 for my latte), would have preferred nice coffee mugs rather than a paper mug given I sat down and stayed a while. Has a nice atmosphere, free wifi, and the employees were nice. read more
