This was the first time we've tried Burney's Southport location, but we have enjoyed the croissants before from their other locations. While visiting Oak Island, we hopped over to Southport and stopped at Burney's for a gingerbread croissant and an apple fritter. The croissant was very good, easily 4 stars, but seemed a little smaller than what we've had in the past. I got to try a bite and liked that it wasn't over-the-top sweet. The apple fritter wasn't as good. It was huge, but didn't seem totally done in the middle and the edges weren't as crisp as they could be. I threw half of it away. The apple fritter rated 2 stars. For this trip to Burney's, it's a 3-star experience. In fairness, we always think of croissants when we think of Burney's so perhaps trying an apple fritter wasn't totally fair? read more

THE BEST APPLE FRITTER I have ever tasted! I am glad Apple fritters aren't meant to be pretty- that leaves more for my friends and me when we are vacationing! It has the perfect amount of moisture and is never to dry! Delicious, just-right sized pieces of fresh, perfectly cooked apple and just the right amount of cinnamon- Just writing about makes me want to leave Nebraska right now and head for Southport, NC! We come here every time we're on vacation and it's never disappointing! On this trip, I tried a German chocolate cupcake, and the icing was outstanding, but the cake to icing ratio wasn't great. The next day, I asked them if they could make one of their cup parfaits with equal layers of the coconut icing and chocolate cake and oh my gosh... I think I gained 5 pounds instantly! There were so many choices! The croissants were filled with creams of all sorts of flavors. We weren't sure what to get as it was our first time there, and the employee just cut up a croissant right then and there to help us taste and we were hooked. Very affordable for a small budget too. I kept my hopes in check before visiting... because I love croissants, donuts, cronuts, cruffins etc and didn't want to be disappointed. I definitely was not! This is a cute bakery that had very friendly staff. The croissants are small and super affordable. I got 2 to try- buttercream and gingerbread. Both were so good, I stopped back after exploring the area to get 6 to bring home. The cream cheese one is like a pudding that tastes like the center of a cheese danish. They also sell other baked goods which I'd like to try... but it would be hard not to order the croissants! They are similar to a glazed donut with a filling, not like a puffy airy croissant. But there's still that croissant flavor and a different texture than a donut. I've had the big traditional croissants elsewhere that are filled and these aren't similar. You don't get that extra buttery flaky aspects. So, I think if you have an open mind, and enjoy desserts, pastries, donuts, etc, you'll be happy. The sweet treats served here are absolutely delicious!! These are the best desserts I've ever had, the croissants and donuts are so soft and freshly baked. The staff are sweet and friendly. We stopped by in the morning, around 10:30am on the Monday before July 4th and it was packed, clearly they are a favorite around here. There is very limited seating, only a couple tables in a small side room, but that's alright, most people just get a bunch to go. They are reasonably priced, we got all the desserts in boxes for around $30. We will definitely be back any time we come to the area! read more

Went there just to see what they had, they had all kinds of yummy treats. The donuts are good, the long John's are a bit dry, but if you like that then they are on point. The croissants are amazing so are the cannoli's. The guy at the counter was so accommodating, he explained everything. The store is so cute, the displays are nice. read more

Burney's bakery was a religious experience for my parents and I. My father ate his entire big scoop of icecream. My mother's apple cinnamon scone wasn't dry at all, and was delicious and fluffy. I got an individual slice of cake from the fridge and the buttercream was immaculate! We sat down and enjoyed our treats in a small adjacent seating area. As we left, the owner himself, Mr. Burney, gave us a hot glazed croissant fresh out the oven, free of charge. It was fluffy, flavorful, and had just the right amount of sweetness. Service was very friendly and the prices are excellent. Safe to say this Bakery has won over our hearts, and we'll be coming back during our next beach trip. read more

Ordered a birthday cake from here for my husband's birthday. They were so helpful when ordering (I was so indecisive). I ended up creating my own order instead of one of their specialty cakes, but I may try that next time. I got a yellow cake with buttercream filling and fudge frosting. It was a little over $24 for an 8 inch 4 layer cake which is a great price, and the cake was phenomenal! When I picked it up, they were making their signature filled croissants and the gentleman working suggested I try one warm-- ended up buying a couple of those too for breakfast the next day!! I stopped into Burney's because I was craving coffee and decided to stop at this cute little shop! So glad I did! Located on one of the main streets in Southport, this little shop draws you in with its cute exterior. I am not a person who likes sweet things and definitely not in the morning. However, when I went to order my coffee I had to stand in front of the bakery display cases and I could not resist! Every kind of treat you can imagine sweet and savory are available but the chocolate eclair is what stole my heart. I am not sure what kind of black magic they must do to get such light fluffy layering and the right amount of chocolate to melt in your mouth - but I hope they keep doing it! The staff kind of reminded me of a Seinfeld soup episode but I find that endearing and fun! (But know what you want when your get to the counter HAHA). I have Personally not tasted the many delicious treats that this wonderland of goodies has. However, my staff love when I pick them up and bring them to them. Yesterday, I went to get 2 dozen stuffed croissants. There are several different fillings that you can choose but they wanted plain, cream cheese, and chocolate. They are beautifully done and I noticed they even have a pina colada flavor. The bakery is open style where you can see the bakers and artists making their product right in front of you. I think kids would love that. They have a very small dining area if you choose to eat there, an k e cream section, and plenty of cakes and cupcakes. They only had one cash register and I did have to wait for a while to get checked out. Staff was friendly and I can see why people cherish this place. read more

So disappointed in this visit. They were out of croissants so we opted for cupcakes (2 chocolate/2 vanilla and a red velvet). The writing on the case says $1.19 for vanilla/ chocolate and $1.99 for the carrot/red velvet. Tell my why when we got up to the counter it was $19.75.....Not to mention the gentleman that helped us gave us a cupcake that had the wrapper all pulled down on one side and a fingerprint in it. Then when we asked to exchange it out for another one politely the man literally said no and kept moving. Even on a ridiculously busy morning, and situated along the parade route, Burney's staff was pleasant, helpful and patient. We just wanted iced coffee but changed our minds when we saw the warm, stuffed croissants. It took us a minute to decide on our order and the iced coffee had to be specially made, but they didn't miss a beat and served us with huge smiles. My friend recommended this place and we almost made the mistake of leaving without stopping. On our way home we decided to get some for our ride and I'm so glad we did! Due to the current pandemic they are restricting it to four people inside at a time. All employees had masks and were super friendly. Everything looked so tasty! We ordered a huge cinnamon roll, two regular glazed croissants, one chocolate, one raspberry and one apple. If I had known it would only cost me $7 I would've ordered every flavor!
