I was walking down the street and craving a coffee. I've never been in there before so I decided to get a simple, small coffee with a splash of almond milk. They were a bit busy so I patiently waited. When I received my coffee and started walking towards the door, I took a small sip and realized that it was room temperature at best. A bit shocked, I walked back to the counter and explained to the first person I saw what the issue was. He literally had no reaction and ignored me. I figured he may have bigger issues going on, so I went back to the lady that served to explain and asked if she could simply make me a new one from a fresh pot. Instead, she brought it over to the espresso machine and started to steam it to heat it back up. I literally said to her that steaming it was going to change the flavor and not the best way to do it. She continue doing it, handed it back to me and walked away without saying anything. I took one sip and threw it in the trash as I walked out the door. I won't be going back there again. read more

This is my favorite coffee shop downtown. Obvious, I know, but PCJ kills it every time. They have an app where you can order ahead & earn rewards. I have grown fond of the app, not only because it's ready when I get there, but because I can see all the modifications possible (like a warm vs hot hot latte!). The coffee is great and I'm not a big coffee drinker. Their chai is fantastic too! Iced chai with oat milk is my favorite. The French vanilla flavoring is a nice add on to my latte. The coffee takes seriously their stars. There are multiple request for 5 stars around the shop. I was close to giving them a 5 until an employee walked in and went immediately behind the service counter without washing his hands. Then he opened a beverage that he brought with him and started drinking while chatting it up with colleagues. There's irony. The spot he was standing drinking his beverage to chat it up is a health department sign stating that all employees must theoughly wash their hands before beginning work. The space is a large room with high ceilings, and multiple places you could sit and do work or with others. I got my regular order of a simple black iced coffee. Visiting Wilmington this week, first time here and we wanted to try out some local coffee shops. We went to Drift, and Bespoke too but Java ended up being our fav!! I was surprised, I hate to judge a book by its cover but I kind of expected to like the more hipstery 2 of the 3 because sometimes those places have really great coffee/ techniques and don't get me wrong bespoke and drift had good latte drinks (I get some version of a flavored iced latte from every coffee shop) but we had the iced caramello leche and iced black and tan at Java and they were both addicting and the best drinks we had all week, The Caramello drink slightly edges out all others for the overall win. read more

Getting my order was a little slow but understandable(see: "windows"). Coffee was good. My main point is the staff handled the pressure well. I really like the decor inside this coffee house, but the coffee itself needs a makeover. My usual order is a mocha, whole milk with an extra shot. Excellent coffee drinks--Almond Joy espresso drink tastes like candy! This coffee spot is a casual hangout in downtown Wilmington. I had the blueberry muffin, they serve it warm! The Almond Joy coffee drink with almond milk is delicious! I loved the flavors. We sat and relaxed for a few hours and the people were nice. We walked from the parking deck by the library. I went there with my daughter and we had an awful expiernece. We ordered smoothies and waited there for about 30 minutes but there was only 1 other customer in there and not busy at all . The reason this took so long was because the employees felt the need to chit chat in the back instead of making food. 30 minutes passed and we still had not gotten our drinks so I asked the employees if we could cancel our order as it seemed they had not even started it yet. The employee screamed at me and told me that I am harming her company by asking for a refund and that I was never allowed back at that location again. Me and my daughter were very confused as to why we were getting scolded for canceling 2 drinks after 30 minutes had gone by. Eventually we got our drinks as we decided not to get a refund because it quote "causes a huge disturbance in the company" but when we drank them they were not worth the money. Overall customer service could have been way nicer and more productive. read more

We stopped this place as we were driving through NC towards Charleston. From the moment I walked in, Laurie was rude to me, while being super-friendly to the other customers (who were clearly regulars). Maybe it's that I have 4 kids? First, we ordered 4 sandwiches - breakfast sandwiches were fine, Palerno was good, bacon chicken had very processed chicken - no thanks. When we went back up to order drinks and treats, she was rude to my well-mannered 8yo daughter (to a question she asked my daughter answered enthusiastically "yes!," and Laurie corrected her saying, "yes, *please*.") My husband's cinnamon bun was good - the raspberry croissant and double chocolate muffin, not so great. My husband's iced Almond Joyful with an extra shot was fine. I should've gotten an extra shot in my tall latte because I've never had espresso *so weak*. When we went back to tell them about the latte, we were again greeted with rudeness and defensiveness. Since Laurie wouldn't make the drink better, we got a refund. And she told us that we could clear our own table. Bathroom wasn't the cleanest, either. Without the attitude, this place gets 3 stars (I liked the art, brick walls). But I didn't pay $35 to get treated like garbage. read more

I love this place. My first experience with one was when they had a shop in Virginia (that later closed). Despite the overwhelmingly great selection of independently-owned coffeeshops in the Wilmington area, I had to drink here for old-times sake. Some of their drinks are a bit overpriced, but that's no different than the mega-corporate chains and at least here, the coffee is good. Out of places in the area, I doubt it's the best but it's definitely the most chain looking one, which means it will probably stay in business for that alone. They definitely need to expand back into the other eastern states, I think it's time for people in non-coffee friendly towns to be able to have another option besides Starbucks. Plus they're fair-trade, which is always a bonus. read more

Port City Java is located in a beautiful, old brick building downtown. We were able to get seating in the raised window spot and had a nice view of the street. They poured me a decent half caf cup and my husband liked his full octane as well. We both got egg and cheese sandwiches on croissants. The cashier kindly provided me with packets of Texas Pete hot sauce. The sandwiches were delicious and filling. My husband is a scone fan, so he ordered a white chocolate scone to go. He was disappointed to have been given a blueberry scone instead. When comparing the scone to his favorite at Nova's Bakery in Charlotte, it was more cake-like in taste. Not a 5 star, but almost as good as one. We were visiting our son and this was a must stop - and my son was right - they really do put our "Spot Coffee" shops to shame - well maybe not to shame, but they really know how to make it good. Of course I got hooked on the Black and Tan - though they do tend to raise one's blood sugar a bit! The place was clean - including bathrooms, the artwork was cool and for sale, pricing was great and the service was as expected - GREAT!
