Each year my wife and I snowbird from Redmond Oregon to Surprise Arizona. We stop in a little town called Hawthorne NV where there is a Port of Subs at a convenience store . Lots of people are loading up on their subs. I knew that Bend had a Port of Subs near the Pickleball Zone off of Empire Ave. Thought I would give it a try. I had the Turkey , Bacon and Avacado sandwich. I had a large sandwich on Garlic Parmesan bread. I added olives, spinach, lettuce and tomato with the avacado spread. Their foot long sandwich isn't as big as other sandwich chains. The meat quality is ok. The bread was tasty. I will stick with my favorite cross town sandwich shop, Cheba Hut. read more

3 things Had dropped my vehicle off in the area so walked here to eat and kill time. The music was so loud I felt like dancing, but I didn't go there to dance, plus it was a track, maybe not everyone likes the selected music. Annoying after a few minutes. Turn it down PLEASE!!!!!! Secondly when did Oregon get away from hair and beard nets being mandatory, the gentleman making my sandwich had full hair, chops, eyebrows goatee. Which is great, good hair genes, however it was unkept, a mess, no grooming. So it looked sloppy and like an end of life hair could detach at any moment and fall into my food. I am not picking on or making fun of this man, but to be preparing food for people, yuck.....I almost walked out. 3rd I ordered a med meatball. I ate it in house so in the time it took me to walk to a table, it was ugly. The bottom bread was soggy and the top bread was so hard when you tried to bite into it, the contents were unwilling purged from their short term home and onto the paper which previously kept all the chaos together. I will say the flavor wasn't bad and they do have a tasty oregano shake I requested. But within moments it was finger food even leaning towards spoon territory. Now one of the perks of being a Door Dash Delivery driver is the opportunity to discover things you've heard of, and to try them for yourself. Back in December, when I was Door Dashing in Bend Oregon, I picked up a delivery at this sandwich place I'd never heard of called "Port of Subs". The first thing I noticed immediately when I walked in the door was the heavenly scent of some of the most amazing fresh baked bread I'd ever smelled. The staff was professional, friendly and prompt with my order (which is something I found to be the norm in Bend.) I knew that I would be returning here later to try one. At the end of my "shift", I did indeed return, and I got myself a roast beef sub with bacon, pesto, mayo, onions, and provolone cheese. I took it to go, and ate it when I got to my parent's house. To say that this sandwich was a world class sandwich experience is an absolute understatement. Everything I chose to have on that sandwich was as fresh as it could possibly be. The roast beef was hearty, full of bold beef flavor, thick cut, and very stacked onto the sandwich. No skimping here! The bacon was balanced perfectly, thick cut, smoky and just the right amount of salty. The pesto was absolutely fresh tasting, and the pine nuts in it gave the sandwich a taste and texture that was amazing, with the basil giving it a fantastic flavor. The onions were crisp, full flavored and not slimy in the slightest. The provolone was nice and melty, and had a creamy smoothness to it that excited my tastebuds. Even the mayo was slightly elevated by everything else on the sandwich. But the real star was the bread, that immaculate white bun with that amazing fresh baked smell and taste. I am absolutely kicking myself for not photographing this sandwich, which was nothing short of a masterpiece! I find myself still thinking of it and measuring it against every sandwich I've had since then. This store has great people working up front, very friendly, almost like they are friends! They make a great sandwich, met the owner while getting a sandwich, as I drive a snow plow for the state, she asked me if one of her employees should leave sooner than later because of projected snow fall in the mountains, that the employee has to cross! Our normal review would be 5 stars. And has been every time We have visited... which is very often. This review is for today... We arrived between 430-5. There were no cars and no customers inside. We really weren't greeted. A disgruntled looking young man came out of the back and just asked what we wanted. Right off the bat he was off putting. He was banging things around and just looked like he was pissed to be there. The station was messy... there was even the end to a portion of meat left in the slicer that he just picked up and threw back in the cooler. There was cheese slices on the slicer.. lettuce l around. For not having any customers... you would have thought maybe they would have cleaned up. He pretty much man handled the bread while Cutting and just threw the meat on the sandwiches. I'm the end, he had to ask us what we had ordered so he could Ring it up. And gave my husband macaroni salad not potato as he ordered. He even questioned whether. To go sandwich that was on the counter was ours! Crazy! Very disappointing service and appearance. We know this isn't the norm.. we will be back. But wanted you to be aware of the restaurant today. My go to sub in Bend. It's basically twice as good as Subway for similar pricing. I always order online, and they have never messed up my order in about 20 times. This place is so good. We go here almost once a week for a filling and delicious lunch. The bread choices are delicious, this month the pepperoncini bread is so good. The staff is fun and they take care of you. We ended up buying the cookie and brownie trays to celebrate our teams birthdays and anniversaries for the month. We usually do cake or cupcakes and always have leftovers. The brownies and cookies didn't last long and the team loved it! The #5 is my go to, toasted. The ingredients are fresh and so is the bread! Oof. I hate giving bad reviews but... I'm making an exception this time. I went to their and I ordered a Chicken Noodle Soup. And I have to say, it wasn't that good. The carrots were in that disgusting mixture of soft on outside, crunchy on the inside, and mushy on the even more outside. The broth was extremely salty and tasted sort of like chicken-ish beef. It wasn't crowded (No surprise. It's Tuesday.) but it looked clean. A little on the meh side for the drink area. But still weird. At least my cookie was great. First time going to this place today. I was impressed by the cleanliness of the restaurant, and the fresh products. I really liked that they slice the meat to order, that's pretty cool. I got the #1, and it was really good. Nice selection of add-ons like pepperoncini, parmesan cheese, red onions, olives, avocado (for extra $), etc. Overall, the sandwich was delicious, even down to the fresh bread. HOWEVER, the ONLY reason this place lost those 2 stars from me (And I'm pretty easy to win over) was the staff........ No one greeted me when I walked in at all. Not even a cheerful, "Welcome to _______!" As you would hear walking into Subway....... The entire time I was setting up my order at the counter, NO ONE smiled. Not one single smile!!!! They didn't really even look at me.... It made the experience awkward and a little intimidating for me. I felt like I was a nuisance to them, and all I wanted was a dang sandwich. Hey, owners! If you're reading this, PLEASE talk to your staff about customer service and press this issue big time! It changes the whole entire experience. To be completely honest, I'm not really in a rush to go back in there because it didn't feel welcoming. If they're miserable at work, then your customers are going to walk out of there feeling miserable too. I'll give it a try in a few months, and see if the staff has perked up at all. In my opinion, Port of Subs is a better version of Subway. I like that they cut the meat and cheese in front of you. I almost always get #18 toasted with cheddar. It's the sando that comes with roast beef and turkey amongst all the random fillings, and its filling and good. Its a good, quick option for lunch. read more
