I loved this place. We made the trip from Southern Maryland to Bluefield to watch my little cousin's women's basketball game. When we left her practice, she said she wanted to go to Portabella. It has a nice-sized parking lot, and when you get inside, it's a quaint spot, with the brick interior walls painted a deep red. There is a dining area upstairs - one ascends a spiral staircase to get there - which my cousin-in-law checked out. Our waitress was very sweet and witty. She was also an excellent server. We got fried mushrooms for an appetizer, and the garlic knots. The mushrooms were small, but tasted like fresh mushrooms, which is what matters. The batter that surrounded them was crisp; maybe they could have used a little more seasoning, but they were still pleasing. The garlic knots were delicious. They were more small rolls/buns, freshly-baked, with an exterior ranging from pale to golden brown, with the slightest tinges of deep brown here and there. These were really yummy, and were served with a marinara sauce, into which I also dipped my mushrooms. Our meals came. Everyone enjoyed what they got, ranging from a calzone to a stromboli to a chicken gyro. Their servings are ample; the calzone and stromboli my family members got were the smalls on the menu - and they were sizable. My own choice was the spaghetti with sausage. Upon the waitress's recommendation, I got the meat sauce. As salads in the U.S. usually feel like work to me, I opted not to bother. The waitress asked if I'd like extra garlic bread instead, and as I am a huge fan of bread, this was a wonderful and welcome suggestion. The spaghetti was delicious and satisfying; I am a big eater, was absolutely starving when we got there... and was absolutely full when we were done. We had the Fried mushrooms (best enjoyed in years,) Greek pizza was outstanding, every ingredient complimented another. The crust is pretty unique, envision New York and Chicago style combined. Also split the Tour of Italy (a pasta sampler,) the sauce was a bit sweeter than traditional Italian gravy, yet was still enjoyable. The owners are very personable and hands on. Decent spot to grab a bite if you are close by . I'm not sure it is worth going out of your way to eat here . But it's definitely a decent spot . Spacious seating , and friendly servers . Parking is quite odd , being there is very little parking , and the other parking option is parking across the street , on the street , and walking across the road ,which can be tricky if you have more than one small child in tow . We had reservations for lunch for a party of 15. We were all from out of town so did not know what to expect as I had taken a stab and found the restaurant online. We were completely blown away! Our table was all ready when we arrived. Our server was really charming and pleasant and attentive. The food was just amazing! We all loved our dishes and were very very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the homemade food. The homemade tomato sauce is EXCELLENT. Lasagne is the best I have ever had. All loved their selections of pastas, calzone, pizza. The chicken salad was crazy - fresh chicken on nice greens IN A BIG OL CRAZY bowl made from pizza dough. All portions were huge. I called to order food today and I ordered the basket sampler, and the Italian nachos. The lady who answered the phone was very rude, and unprofessional. She not only spoke short, she had a very noticeable attitude with her words. So I of course gave the same attitude I was receiving. When my boyfriend went to pick up the food, she advised him "I better watch my mouth, because I got an attitude with her on the phone". I just laughed it off when he told me what she said. So when we sit down to eat, the chicken was tough and the chips were hard, even after I let it sit in the cheese sauce for a couple minutes. Food is small town, rural America good. It probably won't be up to standards if your experience goes beyond Olive Garden. With that said, I still enjoy their pizza and love the garlic knots. Parking can be limited when they are busy. Staff politeness is absolutely hit or miss. They do offer delivery so you can avoid both of those issues. read more

This place was amazing!! We are from NY and was there for the weekend at the Ashland resort. We decided to go out for dinner and saw great reviews on trip advisor. The cheesy garlic sticks a must try. Delicious! My bf had the sausage pizza roll and I had the eggplant parm plate. The serving portions was big ( could feed 2 people) prices was cheap and everything was great. Staff was super friendly.. The food can be pretty good at times but the fact that they got some highly fuckin rude ppl who answer phone and take orders basically provide a shiity customer service knocks this business horribly in my opinion. You place a delivery and they dnt get it right and when you call back to let them knw, attitudes like no tomorrow but the delivery lady was so sweet tho exclude her from this. Speaking of which I never get a receipt which I still forget till after I go thru the bs of a wrong order they done me wrong once like this it was late told me they cldnt fix it it was late get up with them when they open once I did they told me there was no proof I was the one ordered it cuz they ddnt give me a receipt. I have been to this place a few times. Always for carry out. The first few times the food was good. I always would get the steak sub. Now, every time I get the sub it's poorly put together and soggy. I decided to try something new, so I ordered a large supreme pizza. It was soggy, the vegetables were cut into huge portions and placed on the pizza (didn't even taste like they were cooked), there was hardly any sauce, and the crust was so soggy that when I went to pick up a slice all of the toppings fell off. Ummm, wow. Was a little disappointed. I live out of town & my stepdaughters had been raving about this place. So we decided to try the one at the Mercer Mall. The food is mediocre. But staff is quick, courteous & friendly. Several menu items have the same names as Olive Garden with the same entrée. I I am a native to the area & am aware it's a very nice place since nothing similar is close by. But, I can honestly say you can get better in the area. Fantastic service! Teana Overton, our waitress was friendly and thorough without hovering. The food was wonderful; they don't cut corners here: the bread is homemade and I loved that our food didn't sit under a heat lamp, it was brought to our table as it was finished cooking. Although everyone's order didn't come to the table at the same time, the quality of each dish was superior and we appreciated getting it as soon as it was ready to eat. My review is very similar to a lot on here. Good food, lousy service. It's unfortunate, because the quality of food is normally the problem in restaurants. After driving 5 hours to Bluefield to visit family, I decided to take my son out to eat at Portabella. I had not eaten all day and was starving. We arrived at the restaurant around 6. There were about 4 other families/couples eating. I asked if we seat ourselves and was told 'yes'. I walked toward the window seat so my son and I could have privacy and somewhat of a view. The waitress told me we could not sit there because she has arthritis and was not able to walk our food up the steps to the window. I looked over at the family sitting in the other window seat and looked back at the waitress. She then stated I could sit in the window seat, but would have to get my own food because she was not able to walk up the 3 or 4 steps to deliver our food and drinks....Strike one. For appetizers, I ordered the mozzarella sticks. She said, "No. You ain't gonna want those. You're gonna want the garlic cheese bread'....Strike 2. Unless I ask for suggestions, I don't want a waitress or waiter to tell me what I want. I wanted the window seat and mozzarella sticks and didn't get either. I also wanted diet coke not regular....Strike 3. I eventually received the diet coke after I realized she had given me regular. 3 strikes, yet she maintained the attitude that I should be grateful she was my waitress. SMH. I hope management will read these reviews. I feel Portabella could succeed in Bluefield if the service improved dramatically. read more

I literally created a yelp account to write about this restaurant. Hair in my salad, the shrimp scampi was all salt and garlic to the point I had to drown my tongue in drink to get the taste out of my mouth, and I waited on my own table (flagged down someone for a drink, utensils, and a box to throw the food away). Nobody acknowledged that there was hair in my food other than a passing "sorry". Worst food experience I've ever had. I was waiting for Gordon Ramsay to scream "shut it down!". Gross. read more

If you love Italian, portabello's is NOT the place for you. A classic Alfredo, how can that be messed up, flavorless sauce and hardly any shrimp. The burgers, don't get me started, let me just say this, mcdonalds is 1 mile down the road. The burgers are dry and tastes like they were microwaved or cooked on a George Forman. Service was shit, had to remind the waitress to bring my wife's drink back. I suggest the villa by walmart or Olive Garden, don't waste your money here. read more

I come from a big city that moved to this small town. Being from the city your use to having so many things to choose for Italian food. Well since I have went to portabellas if they had the same places here like it does a city I would still choose portabellas. The staff of friendly and smiling. The food is awesome and they have Italian, subs and burgers and more. So there is always a mixture of things to choose from. Plus if your use to having a real Philly steak in this town portabellas is the best. No effence is no philly by all means but it is the best steak in the area. read more

It's like a hidden gem, very friendly staff and good atompshere. The bruschetta, pasta and shrimp were perfection. We still haven't eaten our to-go desserts but I have no doubt they will be great! Don't miss this place if you're in the area. read more

I was ignored when I walked in to purchase my take out order. I waited approximately 5 minutes, and only received service when another woman walked in to pick up her order. I was then asked to wait some more so the other woman could be rung up first. Fist come first serve and equality is not part of their policy and procedures apparently. read more

This location at the corner of Princeton Ave. and Bland St. in Bluefield, WV gave me a reason not to eat there. I walked in to make a take out order and asked the owner what their rating was. She said 5 out of 10, but, she would rate it a 10. I said in NC, ratings are from 70-100, and conspicuously posted for the public to see. She said what rating. I said sanitary rating from food service inspection. She said hers was in the kitchen. I asked to see it. She said she needed a ladder to get to it. I said it was required by law to be on display for the public to see. She said hers was in the kitchen and she never had a problem with it being there. The question I asked should be on any persons mind whenever they are consuming food prepared by a third party. Her smart ass answer was NOT appreciated and reflected poorly on her. I would NOT recommend this eating place to anyone! This owner should reconsider her position on food service safety and the welfare of her potential customers! read more
