I walked in and stood for a moment taking it all in and an employee came right over to ask if it was my first time there. I guess I had that look of awe. He was very sweet and gave me the run down on where to place my order and where to pick it up. I chose the Italian beef sandwich with fries and a drink and added the cheese sauce too. Stopped by today after golf to give their new Big Burger deal a try. Easy to order with the large self serve menu. Then it's just wait a few minutes for your number to be called. The meal is large, the burger has everything on it and is 'open wide' to get a bite. A pile of fries that was more than I could finish and a drink. Burger was their char broiled standard and barely fit on the roll. Overall a great buy for the $10.70 price. Only thing I would change is the itty-bitty plastic cups that you need fill for ketchup, you need about 5 of them for the fries. read more

Meeting some friends in Avondale, after a few Portillo events, I decided to invite everybody over to Portillo's, of course, because I've been craving their hotdogs for the longest time. My favorite Portillo is the one in Queen Creek. My second favorite is the one in Gilbert. This one was really cold inside. Their AC definitely works lol . OK, back to the food course we all had to try a Chicago style hotdog let everybody know that they put ketchup and ketchup on a Chicago style hotdog. Rumor has it the original Portillo store does not carry ketchup, but the store across the street sells ketchup to Portillo's customers. I love the burgers here and definitely love the french fries dipped into the cheese sauce. Sadly, we were going to go back for dessert, but we had no room left over hehehe. We will be back! I went to Portillo's yesterday for the first time in the valley -- I have eaten here before in Chicago (where they're originally from). The restaurant is huge -- upon entering, you go to the right to get in line to order. There are kiosks available to order but I opted to wait for the cashier. He was very nice and answered all of my questions! I ordered the Italian beef with peppers with a strawberry milkshake. The Italian beef was tasty but I feel like the peppers are a necessity -- without them, I don't feel like the sandwich would have had the flavor it needs. The milkshake was creamy and not too thick (so you can still drink it through the straw) with little pieces of strawberry. Yum! Give this place a shot! I thought Portillo's was pretty solid. There is plenty of parking, the dining room is very large with a huge assortment of nostalgic curios to keep you entertained. The restaurant itself is very well done. My wife and I decided we would try to see how a staple of many restaurants compared. That was a simple cheeseburger. I thought it was solid burger. It tastes like it came straight off of the backyard grill with plenty of vegetables and overflowing with melted cheese. The crinkle fries and onion rings were good as well. The only negative observations were that we went to two tables that had food debris on them and there was an employee at the pickup counter eating while she worked. Yes, I will be back. I am shocked at my experience here. First off, the atmosphere is very cool and definitely encompasses what they are going for. The interactions with staff were pleasant and the service was quick. The food itself is very on theme and that's what blew me away. I ordered the spicy chicken chopped salad and was shocked at how the flavors were combined to make it taste exactly like the inside of a chopped spicy Italian sandwich. The salad was HUGE, and even came with a side of bread - normally I do not eat the bread side because it's usually basic. Not this one. The bread was warm and very fluffy with a good chew. Wow! I'm so glad I stopped in here. Looking for a new spot to try the inviting ambiance drew me in. Once inside the 50's style theme accompanied by the awesome soundtrack of oldies had me bopping my head and singing along! Not too confusing the menu is easy to understand. I order the #3 charbroiled burger ( I love burgers!) My hubby opted for the #1 Italian beef sandwich. Our cashier Jill was a breath of fresh air. You can tell she enjoys her job. I am beyond disappointed with you, Portillo's. You used to be great when you first opened I can't even get what I want when I go in order. I was trying to buy one of the whole limited release birthday cakes and I wanted to get a whole one for somebody's birthday and all they said they had was pieces so usually if I don't get what I want you no longer have my business. Food is great everytime except the person packaging up for food delivery always forget extra sauces that are paid for. Tonight we ordered and got our normal beef and combo sandwiches. My wife loves the giardinera sauce they make. Two times in a row now, they have forgotten that. Also this time we ordered a salad and no house bread that normally comes with it. First visit, and it was not a good experience. I will say that the chocolate malt was perfect, but definitely not the rest of our family order. Staff passing back and forth, nobody calling out orders for pick up, just kept stacking them up. Staff literally dropped one ladies order on the ground as we watched them pick it back up and place it back in the bag and later hand it to her (I let her know). Manager just kept saying they were "super busy", yet half of the tables were empty, also saying they were under staffed... at least 10 people behind the counter. We stopped by at around 8pm on New Year's Eve and the place was totally empty of guests, but the well-staffed kitchen seemed busy, presumably with to-go and drive thru orders. Having never been before, we went for the classics. I had the Chicago dog and it was perfectly fine. Not bad, not at all remarkable. Probably wouldn't get again. My boyfriend tried the Italian beef but made the rookie mistake of getting no peppers. I'd go for this one myself next time but definitely with peppers and extra gravy. Was edible but a bit dry and lackluster without toppings. The fries and milkshake we shared got a thumbs up from both of us. Fries were crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and perfectly salty. The shake tasted just like a Hostess ding dong/ho ho and I, as gross as this may sound to some, really enjoyed having chunks of cake to chew on, even if it was a bit difficult to get through the straw. Fun to try but would opt for a seasonal flavor of cake shake or a different dessert altogether in the future. The restaurant seats a surprising number of people and, given that they sell branded birthday candles, my guess is that this is a popular spot for a kid's birthday party, which seems like a good idea to me. This Chicago-style hot dog chain does not have a presence in my home community so I wanted to take advantage while in the area. The location is off I-10 in the western Phoenix suburb of Avondale. The place was very spacious with a fast food diner atmosphere. Separate counters were set up for online/catering orders, dine-in orders, and food pick-up. Besides hot dogs, the menu also carried char-broiled burgers, salads, and sandwiches (beef, sausage, chicken, and fish). With the Portillo's name, I had to order hot dogs which I did with the #2 Famous Five Combo. Two hot dogs, small french fries, and a drink made up this combination. The all-beef dogs were dressed with the classic Chicago toppings of mustard, relish, onion, tomato, celery salt, pickle, and sport peppers. The french fries were the crinkle cut variety while my drink was a sweet iced tea. Even the bun was Chicago-style with poppy seeds present. Being originally from the Midwest, these hot dogs brought back memories of road trips to the Chicagoland area. They tasted exactly how I remember a Chicago dog to be. The fries didn't add much as they were ordinary, but that's not why you visit this brand. It's too bad for me that the nearest Portillo's branch is roughly 90 minutes north in the Buena Park area of Orange County, CA. read more

After ordering online in order to get the promotion, I waited over 20 minutes and finally asked order status. Not one employee asked me if zip needed help as they were on their cellphones on the food line. Ask for a manager as the employee gave me the "deer in the headlights" look and offered no help. I love this Portillo's. The manager here is so nice! He makes it a point to instruct the workers to make a pseudo grilled cheese sandwich for my picky-eater son even though it is not actually in the menu. This is a pretty large Portillo's when compared to others I have been to. It includes a separate diner sort of area annexed to the main dining room which gives this particular location a unique vibe. They have all the other typical historic-themed items decorating the walls and area up near the ceilings to add to the overall ambiance. The wait has never been long any of my visits to this location. The hot dogs are amazing. I get the jumbo all beef dog with everything though I remove the sport peppers myself. I do find that if I try to ask for my dog customized, this location tends to give me a hot dog missing more than I asked to have removed (hence the removal of one star). Even though this location seems much less busy than the Tempe and Scottsdale Portillo's locations, the employees at not paying attention to what is going on out directly in front of the register and beyond. The last time I was there, someone stole an entire full-sized chocolate cake from directly in front of the cash registers whilst I was standing there waiting for assistance/to order. That was not a good feeling to witness. I did report it to the manager, but the guys who took it had already been put the door for a minute or two before anyone came to the counter to report it to so I am pretty sure they likely took the loss on that. Hot dogs usually have a snap to them. Their hot giardiniera sauce pairs great with their food. I particularly like it to dip fries in. The giardiniera sauce is creamy with a kick. Ample seating is available inside. Decor is old advertising signs and memorabilia. There is a diner feel. Service is usually fairly friendly. Catering is available. Update 11/2023: Hate to say it but the staff here has become pretty hostile and awful. We visited with a large party, spending nearly $200 during a slower time of the day. When ordering food it was made very obvious we were an inconvenience to them by ordering too many hotdogs. Our total wait was quoted at 25 minutes and actual wait time was about 37 minutes. That's not even the worst part.. as we were leaving, one of the staff members on the floor felt it was appropriate to say expletives towards us because we didn't put all the chairs back exactly where they belonged after eating. For what it is worth, I did file a survey with the restaurant but have had no response. This is just a buyer beware. The food here is still good though. I recommend the drive thru and no more than 5 hot dogs before they start getting mad at you. read more
