We were so glad to find a Portillo's on our vacation. We had visited them in Florida a few years back and really liked the food. This one in Champaign was just as good. I got the Italian beef with sweet & hot peppers with the gravy on the side (I don't like my sandwich falling apart on me) and french fries. My husband got the hot dogs, which came dressed with a dill pickle, tomatoes, and hot peppers, and a side of onion rings. We also splurged with the yummy-looking desserts (strawberry shortcake and lemon cake) in the cooler near the register. Everything was so good. The beef (which there was plenty of!) had so much flavor even without the gravy. The bun it was on was hearty enough to hold it. The hot dogs tasted good quality. The fries were good (not at all greasy), and the onion rings had such a good flavor, not overly breaded. The desserts were a perfect ending. The restaurant was very clean (including the bathrooms). There was someone cleaning something (including the walls) the entire time we were there. I wish we had one closer to where we live here in Ohio! read more

I've been eating at Portillos for over 30 years. I tell everyone about them. I don't know if times are tough or what but it's not the same. Or maybe it's just the location. I ordered a big beef. And it had close to the same amount of beef a regular had on it. When I ordered the kid that was at the register seemed lost. How do you want your beef. To me there's three options. Dry, wet, or dipped. I said wet he said so dipped. No just a little extra wetness. So you want it on the side no. Just wet. So on the side. So I had to add my own gravy. Why do I have to make my sandwich. Cause if I did I would've put a lot more beef on it. While looking up restaurants once I got settled in at my hotel, I was surprised to find that there was a Portillo's restaurant in the city of Champaign, Illinois. With it being one of my favorite restaurants back in Chicago, it completed my search for a restaurant. I ended up ordering online via Uber Eats delivery being that I was comfortably settled in for the day, plus watching college football. Portillo's Champaign had a 4.4 rating out of (1,500+) which was the assurance I needed that I would have a quality experience. On the menu, I was interested in ordering either the Plant-based Garden Dog, or the Breaded Whitefish Sandwich. Out of both, I ended up choosing the Plant-based Garden Dog, which is highly a favorite of mine at Portillo's. Whether it be Grubhub or now Uber Eats, I love ordering online because it is convenient. Much praise to the Uber Eats delivery driver, Alexis, for arriving with my order in a reasonable time, as well as meeting me in front of the hotel as requested. And Alexis also confirmed that it was me grabbing the order, which I cannot thank him so much for. My mouth salivated as I took pictures of my order to share on yelp. The Crinkle-cut French Fries were the first item I started with eating and oh my they did not disappoint! While my eyes were peeled to the Georgia Bulldogs vs Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets college football game on television, my fingers were grabbing French Fries by the second to eat. As a lover of the Plant-based Garden Dog, these eyes of mine lit up prior to taking my first bite. A bite that left me satisfied as my tastebuds were met with the delicious garden dog and its toppings while at the same time poppy seeds fell from the bun. I swear! I can eat a Plant-based Garden Dog each week and still be satisfied with it like I never had it before, tehehe. Now for dessert, the Chocolate Cake Slice was the cherry on top to a satisfying dinner ordered from Portillo's. I would be lying if I said that my mouth was not salivating prior to sticking my fork inside of it. And each forkful of that moist chocolatey piece of heaven left my mouth salivating along with a devilish grin on my face; there was no chocolate left behind, I swear. I was excited to try out Portillo's for the first time, as all my Chicago-area friends were raving about it. I got one classic hot dog and a chili cheese dog, both of which were great. This food was AMAAAAZZING!!! I loved all of it aside from the BIG jalapeños they put on the Italian Beef. The sandwich was good but there were so many peppers my lips were on fire lol. But I would definitely order again just minus so many jalapeños. The Chicago dog, no complaints! So excited to be able to order delivery for a belated Christmas gift! When I called the way from Chicago, this location picked up and I spoke to Tim about this delivery for my brother in law. He's a Kiwi(New Zealand fella) and needs to have this hot dog experience now for a holiday gift. I just wish I could have added a gift card to my online order, then he could order it again next time. First Portillios I've been too where it would be considered messy/dirty . It was not crowded yet the raw where the napkins, ketchup and utensils are was littered with ketchup cups, napkins straws. Shocked at some of the bad reviews on here! My experience was pretty good and was like any other Portillo's in the Chicago area. That said, we stopped here on the way to Chicago for Italian beefs. I got my normal, italian beef, with hot peppers, cheese, and most importantly, dipped. I also did a strawberry check as there's never disappoints. Before we even got in we were greeted by someone who I actually think was on break, then again by someone inside. They asked if we wanted to be indoors or outdoors, guessing because of COVID because most locations are self seating. While walking to the line, there are dots in place so you can practice social distancing. Stopped by the bathrooms, and although the stalls were extremely small/mapped funny, they were clean. Food was good, as well as the service. I'd stop by if traveling to Chicago via car again. read more

I've been to this Portillo's three times now. The place building and food for the most part is what you expect. But the service is really lacking. Each time the order takes much longer than it should. This most recent visit is a perfect example. There was no one in line. The I ordered a couple of Chicago dogs with no onions or peppers, and a drink. I walked down to the pickup window where there were no customers waiting for food. Ten minutes later they delivered my dogs...with onions and peppers. This isn't the first time they've messed up the order. They just don't care at this location. read more

Heard a lot of good things about this place. The dining area was larger than I was led to believe. We had the old standards cheeseburger and Portillo dog. Both were good however, the fries were cold and soggy, obviously not made fresh. Our order was prepared quickly and delivered by a very nice lady who was cleaning the floors. Usually you pick up your order when your number is called. This may sound weird in a restaurant review but give credit where due. This lady never stopped cleaning the whole time we were there. There were only two tables with customers so not busy at all. But she continued to wipe and sweep and mop! If I had a restaurant I would love to have employees like her. read more

We made it back twice before we had to head back to the south. Delicious, consistent and I appreciate how wonderfully we were treated. The first time we stopped, the lady (I can't remember her name) who was attending to the cafe, gave my daughter Frozen coloring pages, crayons and a small slice of chocolate cake. The second time we went in, Tim set aside a booth for us and hooked us up with ketchup, napkins, utensils, a Portillo's hat, and crayons and paper. I wasn't expecting that at all. Portillo's hasn't lost its charm and in fact, they've upped the ante. Midwest wins, hands down for friendly service! Thank you! My hubby and I are from Illinois but we've been living a life of food depravity since we've been living outside of the Midwest. On our recent trip back home we were so pumped to stop at Portillo's....it's been at least 5 years. Now I don't know about you, but often I tend to "romanticize" places that remind me of home and when I revisit them later, it isn't always the same. I'm very pleased to say Portillo's is still amazingly delicious! Each location has a theme, this one is very Americana with a military theme. The music is a cross between ragtime and hot jazz, harkening back to a simpler time where a good meal and conversation could solve anything (told you I romanticized things). It's definitely a fun environment, the food servers create a rhyme that corresponds to your order number, "Number 39, it's your time to dine." I certainly appreciate how clean everything is too, especially the bathrooms. This is consistent in all the locations I've been to and that's saying a lot. The food is fantastic, it's classic Chicago-style food. You have everything from hot dogs, burgers, Italian beef, fries, salads, cake, shakes, etc. Go inside to experience it (versus the drive thru) and talk to your people instead of staring at your phone. I truly think this place is overhyped! I was so excited to finally try this place, and was expecting to be blown away. I ordered the Italian beef (of course) with a side of fries. The Italian beef was good, but was somewhat bland. The best part about the sandwich was the peppers. I did enjoy the tenderness of the meat, too. The fries were way too salty! I don't usually complain of something having too much salt (usually it's the other way around and I complain of lack of flavor), but they definitely went overboard with the salt. My friend got the same thing, but she also ordered the chocolate cake. Now THAT was divine. It was so rich, moist, and decadent. I regret not ordering a whole slice for myself! We went during the Golden Ticket giveaway to try the meals here. I've been to Portillo's before and had their italian beef so that was what I was aiming to have this time around. I got the italian beef with sausage and cheese fries. We got chocolate cake as well. The italian beef with the gravy has a great amount of seasoning and worked really well with the italian beef! My bun wasn't too soggy. It was great :). I loved the sausage in it too (It had a nice kick to it) but it was a lot for me lol. I ended up removing the sausage midway through the sandwich and found there was a substantial amount of beef left! So yummy! The cheese fries were delicious. Perfectly crisp fries and yummy cheese sauce. The chocolate cake, I heard, has mayo in it...this cake was so moist! I liked the frosting. Overall, the staff did a great job because it was SUPER busy and they were very friendly. Seems like it'll be a hit. I tried the random tamale that they also serve as well and this was yummy. ok.long story,,,long time Portillo's fan . many times in the past rode motorcycles to Chicago 120 miles one way to eat there. Now ,,,Champaign, IL store until lately? Until the sell-out, it was fine. Few months ago, late afternoon, placed an order. A man meets us at pickup, tells us where we have to sit, leads us to booth in the middle of a bunch of folks in the center of the restaurant and seats us. This is not our thing as we normally like,to do our own seating by a window. No reason Or rhyme to do this. Then he brings our food. Checks on us? I like window seating as far from people as we can get . Fixed income so are we expected to tip this person or what? left angry and confused. Last week, wanted lunch with wife again . Line to order stalled with about 12-14 people . One cashier having a problem. Employees milling around in that area, no one even looking at her. We waited about 5 minutes, line didn't budge. We left, went down the street and ate. Immediate service. Yes, we are older and are on a fixed income.
