Looks like there might be some corporate level 'improvements' happening here? Burgers used to be great, now a sad skinny slice of a burger patty on a soggy bun. What happened to the Italian beef? This is the second time I have received a strangely sliced bread with a lot less beef. The first time, I thought it was just a mistake, but remarkable enough that I thought to take a photo. Have heard from friends and family that some have received similar at other locations, while others say, their local Portillo's is as good as ever. Maybe I was just unlucky. read more

My review for Portillo's will be pretty much all the same. I am trying to get there to one of the ones that have breakfast but for the ones that have lunch and dinner? Well the price point is much higher, the quantity of food is much less, but the qualities still good. Pretty much I was a couple years ago when Portillo sold it off and it went corporate. This is the business model for all the owners now. So 2 1/2 stars being mediocre I guess I'll give it three because it's slightly above but it's nothing special. And this pretty pretty much holds True for all the Portillos. I have a beef and cheddar croissant . The croissant was light and fluffy, the cheddar was nowhere to be found until one or two bites at the bottom produced cheddar, and the beef was rather sparse. Still, all in all it tasted pretty good, but there wasn't much of it. And for that, and a drink I paid $11. Indicative of the times. Make of it what you will. read more

I was there in the drive thru thurs. 18th. After 7:30pm. I placed one order at the speaker to be in separate bags. Beef Large fries & Large Drinks. I had a receipt for the free fries, so at window they subtracted the cost of 1 fries, so I should still receive 2 fries with my order, but I only received 1 fries with both my meals in separate bags. I complained at pick up window that I specifically ordered fries for both meals in separate bags. She said I didn't, but I know what I ordered at the speaker, but they refused to give the fries i know i ordered unless i pay for another fries. I was so agitated, upset & furious! Stopped by to discuss and document the mistreatment i received at the Downers Grove location. I discussed and shared with the manager the rib dinner that appeared to have 25 percent missing and went on explaining the totally unacceptable mistreatment by the kitchen and restaurant management at that restaurant. I provided him a opportunity to photograph the product and my receipt. He offered to replace and I declined because I didn't feel it was fair for his store to bear the expenses of another stores problem and I placed a Togo order for the remainder. I arrived at this Portillo's as soon as they opened up this morning, very hungry earlier than normal due to an early appointment I had to deal with. Luckily for me the service was very fast, and the food was really good! The whole place was very clean I am happy to say. And I have to really say the people working there were all super friendly, and had everything ready so fast and hot and fresh. We got the Chicago Style jumbo dog - everything includes mustard, relish, celery salt, freshly chopped onions, sliced red ripe tomatoes, kosher pickle, and sport peppers piled onto a steamed poppy seed bun. The Eclair Cake is a MUST! I'm a huge fan of regular eclairs so I could not pass this up! And you must get the Cake Shake!!! I'm still dreaming of it as I write this! What in the heck happened to their hotdogs and Italian beef?! I grew up in Portillo's. They used to be incredible! The hot dogs, without ordering a jumbo, were very thick and filling. Their Italian beefs came with adj us sauce. The hotdog I got today was smaller than some junior hotdogs you can get at jewel. The flavor was very lacking. They stopped putting the signature cucumber on the dog. The dog was pail in color compared to most Vienna hot dogs. The Italian beef had maybe 1/3 the amount t they used to have . It barely covered half of the smaller sized hun (compared to old buns). The quality and quantity since they sold out. It has steadily gone down hill. They used to be an amazing chain.... Now they are no better than fast food. Plenty other places way better to visit in Chicago. read more

Love Portillo's but they can't seem to get custom orders right. We were in the drive thru. One hot dog normal, one hot dog w/o onions, 2 large fries. That's it. We finally get to the window and the guy brings us a bag and a drink. I ask if that's ours cause we didn't get a drink. He goes and checks and says sorry it was a mistake and reconfirms our order. So the food will always typically taste good, that's how it's been designed. But quality and price seem to make me come here less and buying fewer items to try n stay under $10. I used to get two hot dogs, but they seemed to have poor tasting toppings and not really fill you up. Also would get a double bacon cheeseburger but even that thing would just fall apart in my hand. About a month ago I had a Beef/Sausage Combo at the Portillos in Bloomingdale. The sandwich was terrible. The sausage was not the same as it always had been for the past 20 years. Dry, poor seasoning, etc. The bread was not the same. When Dick Portillo owned the joint, the bread was fresh and had a little toastyness. So, for a few weeks I didn't go again, but today, we decided to give them another try. This time, we stopped at the Porillos in Villa Park. I ordered a combo. Unfortunately, it had the same bad sausage and the same bad bread. Well, I spoke to the manager and let him know that it was not the same as when Dick Portillo owned the place. I told him about the bad sausage. Now, I never complain about anything. I just eat it and go on with my life. But this time, I have to say something. These corporate clowns are going to run this business into the ground. I won't go back to any Portillos ever again. It is just not the same. I read Dick Portillos book and he would not like what his restaurant is becoming. If the owners (Berkshire) want to charge a buck or three more, I will pay it. After having a bad customer service experience at another business this morning, these guys gave me some hope for the customer service experience that this country has always been known for. Yes, it's Saturday night on Labor Day weekend and it's going to be busy. This is just something one has to expect and understand. But what saves the operation is when there is accountability and acknowledgment is expressed to the customer. This is also common sense, not just good business practice. The guy behind the window was busting his ass trying to get out all the orders so kudos to him. I appreciated him saying sorry, and when I said "it's okay," he said, "no it's really not ok" and threw in some free fries. Had a nice chat with the young gentlemen outside updating me about my order too. Thanks for the staff for doing hard work for little pay. We appreciate you. read more

Decided to come in for dinner instead of battling traffic, adorable location! I love seeing different locations because they are always unique but the food is always amazing ! Laura took our orders and was very pleasant but when I asked what was in the fruit cup she asked the manager Warren... he replies "berries..." I ask what berries my daughter is allergic to blackberries... I get well it has blackberries, raspberries and strawberries. I ask if it can be made with only strawberries again stating my daughter is allergic and he has an attitude with I guess as an answer. Never once have I had an employee at Portillo's be so rude. It's a simple request if they couldn't oblige he could say no and keep the attitude to himself. I used to frequent this portillo's out of conveniance and have since given up... and craved cleaner facilities. The place is dirty looking, the ribs are always burnt (in a bad way), if you order cheese fries 10 times, you'll check your bag 9 of those 10 times and not find any cheese and the other 1 time the bag probably won't have fries or cheese. I remember going to the original dog house on north ave in Villa Park with my dad. Since the Portillo family sold the food has not been as good as it was. I'm sorry to say the new policy to not accept United States currency at there drive-up window is the last straw. Fries are good but for a place "known" for hot dogs, these left me wanting for something better. The bun is great and the toppings have the right amount of spice but there's just too much of everything for the size of the lackluster dog underneath that pile of condiments. Yesterday evening I had a taste for a beef, just a plain beef, no peppers, no fries. When I got the sandwich home it seemed fine at first, nothing to write home about, but, all I wanted was a beef sandwich. When I got to the final 1/4 of the sandwich, the meat was cut thick and tough as nails. I chewed, and chewed, but the flavor was unsatisfying with the meat too tough to break down. I finally gave up and threw the last 1/4 away. I have found that because of CoVid19 some of the smaller shops have raised their prices or have reused their grease. Portillos, which is a big corporation that probably received PPP$ has no excuse for using the ends of a cut that was too tough to chew.
