Friendly and do walk in nail trims where we hold our small dog. She does get stressed out with dogs barking in their kennels in the back and of course she doesn't enjoy getting trimmed. her nails are black and after a year of trims never hit a quick which is great and why I don't want to do it myself. Groomed my Schnoodle for first time today. I didn't notice until we were home a while that he had a raw patch of skin bigger than a quarter on his lower underbelly. He is frantically licking it. He is also missing a small but slightly bloody nick on his rear end. This has never happened anywhere before. I took my three dogs here to get groomed (each dog had been before). I came to pick them up and left a nice tip. I later noticed that all of my dog's haircuts were choppy. I called the shop and was told that the dogs wouldn't stay still, which no one mentioned during pickup. When I called to informed them, I was told to bring the dogs back to get the haircuts fixed. After several failed attempts of trying to setup different times/dates (bringing one dog in at a time), eventually I was ignored. Still, I remained a customer and later called to get a sanitary cut for my schnauzer. I left a message on two separate occasions and on the third time I called someone answered and hung up on me. That's completely unprofessional! If my dogs were too much to handle, they could have called me to pick them up without rending service; refuse future services; fixed the haircuts; not charge me at all or refunded my money. None of those options were used. If they communicated any of this, I would have accepted it and moved on. There was no need to take my payment then later be rude. Good customer service can still happen even if the outcome is not in favor of the customer. read more

We were very pleased with Luna's visit to the beauty shop. She is 11 with poor hips and the staff were very sensitive and respectful to us telling them to be gentle. They said they lifted her out of the bath as opposed to making her jump. Not sure why there are any poor rating on the establishment because we had a very pleasant experience! I wish I would have looked at the reviews before taking her here... Dianne asked if I wanted a trim, and I said yes! Because she rolls and her hair gets a little crazy. NEVER did I expect I was going to have my dog returned 1/2 way shaved!! Not only is the cut actually SO ridiculously awful-- but it took 5 HOURS. I had an appointment set at 12:30 and she wasn't done until after 5pm!! She was kept in a kennel the entire time. When I walked her to the car she went potty FOUR TIMES!! I had my husband come and check on her on his way home from work at 3pm and she wasn't done. I had to pick her up WAY into the evening. I am so upset. I cannot believe this was $60. There's absolutely no excuses for why my dog has been hacked up so poorly. It's easily going to take a year for her hair to grow back. She also said he would be done by 4pm and didn't call us till 6pm. My dog is visibly shaken too. He was super dehydrated and really scared all night. We won't be going back...Also bring you dollar bills to pay cause they always make it awkward that you tip them so give exact cash. read more

My super hair-ball dog needed a cut. He was panting all the time 'cause he was always so hot... so off Odin went to get his first cut. He took most of the day... poor guy. And poor staff - it was quite the challenge. Since his hair had grown so long, it was knotted all over the place... his legs and ears especially. What can I say? I have a dread-dog. These guys did a great job of getting Odin all cleaned up. For a measly $55, we had a dog that was without knots in his hair - and smelled good to boot. I would say that I didn't much like the fluffy head he had (the hair was a touch too long)... but other than that, it was a pretty sweet deal. NO MASK WEARING during checkout when only 2ft away from one another...It's unclean, loud, there's no clear pricing, they only accept cash.....but don't tell you when you make your appt. There's a broken ATM machine in the entrance with a garbage bag over it..."that's been broken for over a year now and the ATM owner hasn't picked up yet"....odd....but you can get back in your car and find parking down on Hawthorne and hit up an ATM somewhere down the street and then come back and find parking again. I've been taking my 2 large dogs here for approx 7 years. In the beginning it was a one woman owned business. Although it wasn't the fanciest place I was drawn to it because the owner was very sweet, prices were great and it had an easy going vibe that was easy to get in to.....now it's become a place where they are herding dogs through like cattle. No bathroom breaks. No timing accountability. Extremely overpriced. Amber charged me $80 today to groom my large schnauzer mix when it was $65 last time, $50 before and $35 when I started going there. $80 would be reasonable if they would provide services for both my pup (bathroom breaks, quiet kennel time) and simple payment services for the client vs stating "atm is broke" "there's no room on my phone for Venmo" "and the charges...." "plus the owner doesn't want that" while I watch another customer pay one of the other groomers via Venmo directly next to me....my husband and I both own small businesses so fees and charges I'm very familiar with and empathetic but it's part of a legitimate business. Overall, just extremely unprofessional, overpriced, unclean and rude. Lastly.....no masks. I get it while you're grooming but when we're facing each other 2 ft apart...you should be wearing a respectful mask during these times. read more

My mom and I will NEVER bring our dog here EVER AGAIN. Here's why: A while back, we were looking for a new dog groomer. Our neighbors recommended this place because they took their dog here, so we did too. After the first couple of times, we basically had to drag our dog in and pick him up because he refused to walk in by himself. Red flag number one. Second, it is always so hard to breathe in their space. It is so steamy it feels like a sauna and if I am having a hard time breathing, my dog's poor lungs definitely cannot handle it. The last one is the kicker and why this is the last straw for us today. It takes them WAY TOO LONG. They keep our dog in a cage, which we have requested they not do due to his anxiety, but it falls to deaf ears. Each time we request he not be put in a kennel, he is in one. It then takes them half a day to do him. It should not be that long especially in that sauna. The last few times, my mom has requested he be done within 2 hours, and it happened for the most part. Today though, there was a new sign on the door saying "haircuts take 2-4 hours". Mom dropped him off at noon. She went back at 4:30 to check on him and he wasn't done yet. She waiting in her car outside the building until 5:45 when he was finally done. That is just shy under 6 hours!!!!!!! Absolutely horrifying. He finished two bowls of water the second he got home meaning they don't give the animals access to water! Never again are we taking our dog there and neither should you! read more

I really hate to leave a one star review as years ago I took my Bernese Mountain Dog mix in numerous times for grooming and the owner did a fabulous job. Today we took our Longhair Dachshund who is from AKC Champion bloodlines in for a wash and trim and he came out very clean so initially I was happy but when we got in the car noticed the damage to his fur. I told her I wanted a show cut appropriate to his breed... I feel like the mom who took her kid to Supercuts and the kid comes out with a bowl cut. His legs look like a poodle cut, they shaved his stomach and even clipped the hair off his penis, they cut off his tail hair and his ears are very short, all the defining and endearing traits of his breed when it comes to coat are gone.... From now on it's back to mom (me) being his groomer as I did a far better job maintaining his coats cut. read more

He has always been good with nail trims but was clearly stressed out by the aggressive way she approached him and all the yelps and barks coming from the dogs being groomed. She didn't try to be gentle with him and didn't even let him sniff her hand but rather grabbed him and tried to start clipping immediately. He was noticeably anxious and instead of giving him time and pets to calm down she told us rudely to leave and come back another day which we will NOT be doing. What to do with a stray pup who's so matted and filthy he's literally uncomfortable in his own skin? Shave him down and start over, of course. Thankfully the weather was just right for such extreme grooming when I brought my recent Multnomah County foster dog to Portland Pampered Pets. They took pity on his condition, and they did what they could to preserve his muzzle and top hair so he would still look adorable for his "please adopt me" photo shoot. These ladies are top notch in my book and have absolutely earned my repeat business with future foster dogs. I didn't think his ears were fixable they were such a mess, but now they're so soft and fuzzy - kind of like Yoda. You've never seen a silly dog prance so much when he was done. He looked great, and his attitude would suggest that he knew it. My squealing with delight and making noises entirely unbecoming an adult probably tipped him off, but this little guy was working the room. "Thank you. Thank you very much. I love this place, it's affordable, $5 nail trims between grooms, and the groomers I've worked with are very sweet. But the last few times I've brought my pup in for grooming the dog that roams the place has chased my dog while being walked out to me and this last time bit at her back legs! My dog yelped a little and scrambled to get through the door to me! The lady that walked my dog out (tall with dark hair, I believe her name is Amber, but I could be mistaken), she just laughed it off and continued talking like it never happened. When I got my dog into the car I checked to see if it was more than just a nip and I was heartbroken to see that the dog had made my dog bleed! She has a small puncture wound on her left bum!! Definitely worse than just a little "nip"! I cannot believe they would let a dog roam when that dog chases other dogs and bites when their clients dogs are coming and going! Not to mention I've seen this dog chase other dogs before and seen it jumping up on the counter and barking at people! To be completely honest, I could care less about the dog jumping up, but the last straw for me was my dog getting bit! I won't be back until this is resolved. This is completely unacceptable. I ended up taking my dog to the vet and she had to get a round of antibiotics and a rabies booster shot! She is also going to have to wear a cone until it heals. For me it also raises the question, what happens when I'm not there?? Extremely disappointed that my favorite groom place would allow things like this to happen. These people work with dogs for a living for crying out loud! This is beyond embarrassing!!! read more

I called yesterday to see if they had time this week to give my cat a lion cut. The woman on the phone promptly yelled to someone else, "You got time for a lion cut this afternoon?" before returning back to our conversation and saying I could bring him in at 4:30. I wasn't expecting to take him in so soon, but I agreed and she took down his name, so I figured I had a set appointment. Fast forward to 4:30. We arrive, check in, and drop him off. We're told it'll be "a couple of hours" and that they'll text us when he's finished. I was confused, as that seems like a pretty long time for a cat to be groomed but nervously agreed and went to walk around the neighborhood for a bit. We came back 1hr. 45 later to check in and see if he was finished. To my surprise, they hadn't even started. He had been sitting alone in a cage for nearly 2 hours. One of the women said she was going to have the other girl help because my cat was "giving her the stink eye." He is seriously the most well-behaved, chill cat on the planet--even our vet says he's the best they've ever seen. He will just sit there and let you stick a thermometer up his butt with no complaints. She clearly hadn't even tried to cut him yet. Once again, they said they would text when he was done. Another 30 mins later we finally get a call that we can come get him. When we showed up, she handed him to us with only the bottom half of his body shaved... and the top half still fully fluffy. He looked absolutely ridiculous. I looked at him and said, "What is this?" The woman insisted it was a lion cut. I have no idea who taught this woman, but it most certainly is not a lion cut to only shave his back half while leaving the rest of him fully unshaven. To top it off, he was shaking and literally had half of a poop sticking out of his butt. This is a cat who peed in the bathroom sink rather than on anything in the house when I accidentally bought him the wrong litter. The poor thing was traumatized, needing to go to the bathroom but trying to hold his poop in the whole time because he's so good--and all for a half of a haircut?! We cleaned up his butt and insisted she fix his haircut. Needless to say we will never be coming back to this place. It's sketchy, dirty, unprofessional, and they clearly don't care for the animals' well-being. Don't tell me to bring my pet in at 4:30 only to leave him locked away for 2 hours before you even touch him. DO NOT BRING YOUR PET HERE. read more

Portland Pampered Pets is a great neighborhood business! We have a 13 lb. terrier chihuahua mix, Daisy. She goes to see the ladies at PPP monthly for a bath, trim and nail clipping. During the summer months she gets her hair cut short too. They do a great job with all the trimming and bathing and also really make her feel comfortable. We have been to other places, but usually Daisy comes home seeming a bit traumatized. After her visit to PPP, she just trots out happy as a clam. Also, they know we live close by and are so accommodating with timing- they just give us a call when she's done. We drop her first thing when they open in the morning, usually, and she's out really rather quickly. They also keep a mellow vibe going, even if there are a few dogs there. Their personalities are really low key, and kind, dealing with the doggies. That is important to us. It seems to keep the dogs pretty relaxed. Even our "not so social" dog just pretty much relaxes- when I get there, she's lying down in the kennel after she's done drying. Also, it is inexpensive! I have been to a couple other places in town, that are double the price. Honestly, after groomings at both of those places my dog seemed overwhelmed, exhausted and freaked out when I got there to pick her up and the behavior continued when she got home. She just hid under the bed. I would have been willing to pay the extra if she seemed to have a better experience, but in fact it was quite the opposite!! Regarding the shop, it is simple and functional. It's not the W hotel. But they wash dogs, so guess what? It's going to smell like wet dog. We love Portland Pampered Pets and are so glad to be able to patronize a great local business. read more

I took my dog to get his first official grooming ever. He is a boarder collie and is very sensitive to surroundings and people. Chelsea helped me out today and was so awesome! She took time to get to know my pet, his needs, and my wants. She was patient and friendly. My dog has supper sensitive paws and had never had his toes cut. She trimmed his toes and they look great. I am one of the crazy animal owners who doesn't want her dog crated. Chelsea was totally understanding and worked around my specific needs. I am really angry with myself that I only checked the ratings for this place on google. When I walked in and saw how rundown it looked and that it smelled badly, I should have just turned around and left. But I gave it a try due to the great reviews on google, and like others have noted, don't expect them to be done in two hours even if they tell you they will be. They told me they'd call me in two hours but did not, and when I finally gave in and called three hours after drop off, they said my dog had pooped on herself because she was scared of the dryer and they had to rewash her! My dog goes to the vet and has scarier things done, and has never made a mess on herself. I told them they could leave her wet and I'd just dry her when she got home, but they apparently went ahead and forced her into the dryer before I could get there to pick her up. At that point, she still wasn't ready. As I watched two of them brush her and trim her nails - not even on a table, mind you, just holding her up in the air - they were very rough with her and cut one nail too short enough to make her bleed. Then they blamed me for not cutting her nails enough! So unprofessional. Her nails had been cut at the vet six weeks prior and I've never needed to cut them more often than that. Finally, they walked her to me and she was literally cowering away from a much bigger dog who was running around loose. I've never seen her cower at another dog, so I have no idea what might have happened with that, but it didn't look good. At last, she was in my hands (with a leash totally covered in fur) and pulling desperately to get the heck out of there. She doesn't even do that at the vet! They charged me less since it took so long but then kept the change assuming it was a tip. My dog was a shivering mess for most of the rest of the day. Do not take your animals here! read more

They are very good at what they do. I've read a couple unfavorable reviews here and feel bad for those people experience. Apparently Samson complexes aren't that difficult to get over after all, especially when the summer heat makes you want to carry around your own personal a/c unit with you everywhere you go. So the pooch got his tresses chopped, a canine form of a/c involving shaving his belly to maximize heat transfer to that lovely cool grass when he flops down on the ground & hand scissoring everything else down to a mere 1 inch. We had put it off as long as possible due to multiple horror stories from our other doodle friends (Oski's a goldendoodle: half standard poodle & half golden retriever, 100% muppet) where they came home looking like foo-foo poodles with pom-poms or shaved down so much that they looked like gigantic newborn mice. They scissor cut him exactly the way we asked her to which is a doodle cut (sort of a modified poodle "puppy cut": all the same length along the body, leave the face alone, trim but no naked tail, & no tight poodle feet). She cuts a lot of the doodles in SE so knew exactly what we were talking about. Sometimes the dogs have severe mats in their hair that extend down to the skin in some spots so they have to cut them really close everywhere unless you want shaved patches on your dog which would be interesting to say the least! She's really good about telling you that upfront because she doesn't want you to be surprised either. All this including trimming their nails for a mere $50. We know people who were charged $90-100 in town for cuts they hated & back in the emerald city it starts at $100 for a electric razor cut. Yes, it takes them a while, usually 4-6 hours but he's a 75lb dog, they're hand scissoring his entire body & it's not like they cut him the entire time. Sometimes the dogs get antsy & need a break from getting groomed so they stop, let them chill out in the kennel & work on another dog for awhile. So if you're stressed about getting Samsonized, give them a shot. They'll definitely listen to you & treat your pooch well. And as they say, a photo is worth a thousand words so bring in a pic of what you want your dog to look like so everyone will be happy in the end. read more

Groomer Chelsea gave my little mutt an adorable cut!

I brought my tiny chipoo pup here a couple years ago for his first groom and was disappointed that he wasn't ready until 4 hours after his appointment time. This signaled that he was tied/caged up for quite a while despite having an appointment. I had a much better experience with another groomer down the block and took him there instead, up until they closed earlier this month. I called today and they were able to squeeze him and my other dog (just a bath and nail trim for her) in which I appreciated. The cut was eh, and both dogs had a strange film on their eyes. Maybe the shampoo? The prices are reasonable for sure and I think the treatment was ok but nothing wonderful. Also they're cash/check only! I'm on the hunt for another groomer because my dogs are my babies, but I think they deserve a fair shot. They could also work better for someone whose dog has less complicated fur :) read more
