Do not buy a car from here, ESPECIALLY if you are dealing with an incompetent sales person named Heather. I purchased a car here in 2025, I live in California and I bought this car out of state and had it shipped to me. When I originally called and explained all of this, Heather told me that she's going to be very thorough and as transparent as possible with the condition of the car. She sent me a couple of videos that weren't that great of quality and when I asked for follow up pictures on certain things wrong with the car she assured me it was no big deal and sent me blurry photos to make it look like there was nothing there. I wanted a very specific car and there were very few available in the country at the time which is why I went with this dealership and ended up purchasing the car and shipping it to California. During this whole process, Heather told me that I needed every single paper notarized since I am out of state so I made an appointment at a notary and was about to pay $15 per signature (there were lots of forms so it would have cost me hundreds of dollars). A few days later the finance department called me and asked me why I haven't sent back the papers yet and I had to let them know that it's because I was waiting for my notary appointment. Gail was very surprised to hear that and said that I don't need to have any of the forms notarized... I am very grateful for that call because she saved me a ton of time and money. Heather then told me that I needed to put a $500 deposit in order to reserve the car which would go towards the final cost of what I'm paying for the vehicle. When I receive the paperwork I noticed that the $500 deposit was not applied anywhere. When I asked about it, Heather tried to tell me that I did not make any deposit and they were holding the car for me as a courtesy... Luckily I had the receipt and sent it to her, that is when she refunded me my $500 and didn't even apologize for the error. Unfortunately, it doesn't end there. When I got the car there were a lot of dents, marks, and scratches on the car that were not disclosed to me prior to purchase. On top of that, Heather sold me a car with failing tires that had chunks of the tires missing... I expressed my concern with the fact that they were trying to sell me a car with tire tread that was bordering on "yellow" (which is not a safe standard for tires) and asked if it's possible to get replacement tires, Heather assured me that even though they are on the low end of the "green" for tire tread, they are still acceptable to drive and will last me over 10,000 miles. A tire specialist in San Francisco told me these tires were failing, not wearing down since it's abnormal for chunks of tires to just fall off the tire. In the end, it sounds like Heather was just taking advantage of the fact that I am an out of state customer who wouldn't be able to see the car in person before purchasing. Very disappointing and shows how untrustworthy she is. Avoid if you can! read more

Let me first say that I once loved Portland Volvo - I purchased an XC90 and I've had a 92' 940 service here with no complaints. Jordan was the service advisor and he was great. Always called with updates, gave extremely accurate quotes, and was very friendly. Fast forward to several years later. I brought my 2019 XC90 in for routine service. I ask them to thoroughly check the vehicle for anything that may need to be addressed. Vehicle has had routine oil changes as well as fluids checked and changed as necessary. Etc. Vehicle is well taken care and we are knowledgeable on them as well. We were called back with a quote to fix everything - $8,000 - ??? Really, for a car that is well taken care of and is in the garage when parked as well. I was also disturbed at the fact the staff member laughed while relaying this information. That's very unprofessional. We had them perform $3,500 - Stating we wanted the batteries replaced, brakes - which we told them do but they didn't, oil change, diagnoses and remedy of park assist sensor malfunction. Instead, they added on windshield wipers - which we told them not to do. They also allegedly plugged the tire - with a nail in it - I told them not to fix the tire as I've had the tires replaced at Town Fair and they have a Road Hazard Warranty. Cost $150 to simply diagnose the park assist sensor issue but they didn't fix it. We stated 3-4 times the vehicle had a very annoying screech, which it took numerous attempts for them to fix. Many things were missed and others were done without consent. Service did not relay my requests accurately and the bill was nearly $3,500. My car was returned with batteries that failed their tests. Why would I want a car back without batteries that would work approaching the winter months in New England. Each time you call you get a different service member, and if one handles one job and you get tossed around they pass the buck and just say I wasn't there when you said this or that. It's very poor. You live and die as a team in this type of establishment. Any staff member can see a work order - it really shouldn't matter who handled it yesterday or las Thursday - it seems none of them can effectively communicate anyways. The Service Manager is a disgrace to Volvo and is horrible with customers. She immediately blamed us for all the issues, failing to listen to our complaints, stating she would do nothing for us, and just generally has a sour attitude and is less than welcoming. When a vehicle comes back for a third time - and had to be towed back on our dollar due to work you failed to complete correctly, a customer has the right to be thoroughly upset and enraged. After trying to voice legitimate complaints and asking if they stand by their work, I was threatened and she said she would call police. This is a fantastic way to treat a loyal customer who's spent more than $50k at your shop when you botched this entire service. They took zero accountability and never apologized. Fail. Service Advisor Brian did end of fixing some concerns, but also told me to leave when I was unhappy as well. This was after a battle - should have never been one. He's in a relationship with the Service Manager - So you can clearly tell the odds were not in my favor. Service Advisor ( Brian Richard ) is engaged to the service manager (Kristin Adams.) Feel free to fact check. Don't expect fair dealings with this conflict of interest business configuration. Staff is all for themselves and against the customer. Treated like trash after spending $6,500 in general maintanence repairs. (Not to mention the original purchase of the car as well.) I will never return to this disgrace of an establishment EVER again. Still love Volvo - now hate this dealership. Beware. End Note: Park Assist Service Alert Is still on after the third visit. I bought a Volvo s60 there I paid 28000. for the car a year ago they told me I could put a hitch on it for my wheelchair but uhaul and Volvo says that's not the case I tried to trade it back in for a car I can put my wheelchair in and Peter insulted me by offering me a Hyundai. then I tried to buy a polestar from him and he won't take one dime off his polestar that's been on the log for 5 months and will only give me 26000. for the Volvo he sold me for 28000. the guy lied to me and tipped me off. plus they have the b S dock fees here car max offered me 20000. for the car either way I'm not taking it in the ass from Peter. used car salesman tactics don't work with me. do yourself a favor and go to central Maine motors. read more

Sadly disappointing. I'm not sure why they have resorted to predatory practices, but I was charged $3,000 for an alternator replacement without an estimate provided. While this is illegal in Maine they know nobody will go to small claims court over a few thousand dollars. I would have gladly bought my next car from them if they told me my ten year old vehicle needed half of its value in repairs, but this money grab has made me take my business elsewhere. read more

I reached out to Portland Volvo online about a used vehicle they had for sale. John was very prompt in responding and was very personable. Ultimately I decided I wasn't interested and John completely understood. Fast forward a few weeks and I emailed John asking if that vehicle was still available. Unfortunately it had been sold but I continued to work with John to ultimately purchase a certified pre-owned Volvo. I found Portland Volvo to be relaxed and not high pressure. They really want you to find the vehicle that's best for you. Because of schedules, my husband and I ultimately worked with John via email for about a week while the car was being detailed, we finalized the deal that Friday, traded in our car and left with a practically new Volvo. We'll be returning for maintenance, enhancements and future upgrades! read more

Service is very misleading. Every estimate I have been given is low by 40%. They never let you know when it will be more or why. The last 2 times they have said it was complete but when I arrive they say we just need to wash it. The last time I went for a 60k service estimate $800. This is my wife's car so she made the appointment. I work by the dealership so I dropped it off. They called at 2:30 and said just needed to be washed and they also informed me that the brakes need replaced on the next visit. At the same time my wife got a text that said the brakes were critical. Around $2k estimate(so add 40% to that) they called at 3 and said my car was complete and the total was $1113.(+40%) went to pick up my car and that said ok it just needs to be washed and vacuumed. I said just give me my car. I then went to the front desk to talk to a manager man came to talk to me. Didn't really care and I said I won't be back. Also said when I get my car (Mercedes)serviced the estimate is the price unless something comes up and then they call and explain. As I was leaving he asked if he could take a copy of my receipt. I said no I am sure you can get your own copy. This place is nothing short of criminal. read more

Manipulative and abusive. Called the Volvo Service Center this afternoon to ask for assistance as my heads up display was no longer showing the speed limit. I get a same day appointment and went in at 3pm. As I'm heading over, my check engine light comes on. I talk to the customer service rep Joel Hall. I'm told diagnosing the problem is at no cost. At the 1 hour mark, Joel comes over to me in the waiting area and explains that the engine light came on because my car's software needs to be updated AND because there is a leaky valve. Joel says it's all a quick fix. He doesn't have a quote yet which I find odd because I've only ever worked with prepared professionals. I'm getting a sick feeling in my stomach so I go up to the counter again to clarify that I'm not being charged. He then goes on to say that the first hour is free and then it's 169 an hour... but if the full hour isn't used then it's only 80. I'm stunned, wondering if there was something I missed. I then try to go back over the issues with my car with Joel so I can better understand. He cuts me off and says, "I feel you don't trust us... you're going to love us." I said, "Of course, I don't trust you- you're a car dealership." Joel comes back over to where I'm waiting 10 minutes later with a quote in hand- telling me that the software update is 200 dollars and that it should have been done while my car was still under warranty but it wasn't... and that he's a stand up guy who will only charge me for labor (169 per hour). Joel then goes on to say that nothing can be completed today and that I have to come back which makes me wonder what they've been doing for an hour. He goes on to say, "you wanted the 90,000 mile service also which is an additional 300." I informed him that I never asked for that and that he knew I never asked for it. Joel said "oh yea... this is the problem when we don't have customers sign off on things first." Very smooth, you can tell he's done this kind of thing before. He tried to demand I pay but I got loud and called the dealership shady. I said that I wouldn't be paying a dime... and that if it's going to be a problem then I'd be happy to include the police. Joel then tried to cover his own butt saying he'd speak to his manager and get the fee reduced. I told him that nothing needs to be reduced or waived because I never asked for anything in the first place... and that whatever problems he created for himself are his own doing- not mine. I then demanded my car and Joel said it would be a few minutes. I said ok, he walked off. A short time goes by and I head over to the counter to ask for my keys and my car again. Joel says it will be a few more minutes and it occurs to me that I can't trust these people at all so I went into the service bay so I could put eyes on my car. Joel and his manager roll in like they're going to do something but they're liars who have realized they've been caught and keep their mouths shut which was probably best. I get in my car and leave. Food for thought.... manipulating someone into believing they agreed to something they never actually agreed to... for your own personal gain.... is gaslighting, narcissistic, and abusive. Our family was driving from Connecticut to Maine when our 2011 XC90 started making a funny sound. At the halfway point, we called Portland Volvo to ask if maybe they could take a look. This was Friday at around 3 pm. Lisa from the Service Dept. answered the phone and was extremely professional and sweet, but informed us there were no open spots that day. She suggested we leave the car overnight and maybe someone would get to it on Saturday. She even suggested a rental car dealership nearby. Nervous that we were going to do more damage if we tried to drive it home to get it looked at, we followed her advice and were surprise when she called early on Saturday to tell us that they squeezed our car in, and discovered the problem. Lisa had all our paperwork taken care of when we arrived (just as they were closing), there was no push for service, and we drove away relieved and grateful. Portland Volvo saved our short weekend vacation and treated us Flatlanders just as kindly and respectfully as I'm sure they do their regular customers. Highly recommend. read more

I purchased a brand new XC90 from this dealership and it's been one mishap after the next, with zero consistency or accountability when it came to serious errors made. Service has been similarly lackluster, and sleazy, with misrepresentations about what my service coverage actually consists of. After spending 50k with these jokers, I'm left feeling epically screwed over. I will never, and I mean never, do business with this dealership again. Need a Volvo? This place is the worst Volvo service experience that I have ever had the displeasure of tolerating. Where to begin...I have had a check engine light coming on for almost two months. I called the service department and was told that it was nothing to worry about and it would probally go out on its own. So I delayed service until it needed an oil change. I brought it in today and was told that the check engine light was due to faulty leak detection pump that was stuck open. $500.00! I had dropped my car off in the morning and waited to be shuttled to work. I waited and waited for another customer tht was supposed to show and we were to be shuttled together. I arrive to work 30 minutes late due to the wait. I had talked to the service department several times about needing to pick up my vehicle before 3pm as I had an important errand to run after work. I was assured that it would be done by then. I called at 230 to ensure that the shuttle would pick me up at 3 and was told that the car would be done at 4 and they could pick me up. 330 came and went and no shuttle. I called and called with the same excuse they would be there. I told them that my work closed at 4 pm and I would have to wait outside in the rain and 46 degree weather if they were late. 4pm came and went. I stood outside in the cold and rain until after 430! I saw their shuttle driver drive past me 3 times! Once again I called and asked why they could not see the clearly marked sign they kept driving past. I finally get to the dealer ship at 450pm. I attempt to use the ladies room but there is no toilet paper in either stall. My card is declined because of the large balance due. I cannot call my bank because they are closed. I have to write a check with my painful right hand that has arthritis and has been exposed to the cold elements for more than 35 minutes. I go to get into my car and my seat cover is half off, the car was not vacuumed or washed. I have been to plenty of volvo dealers around the country and it is always a luxury experience. Not here.. I finally leave the dealership at 508pm and still have an hour drive home. I have missed my important errand that I needed to run which was to deliver releases of information to my daughter's new providers. She has a terminal illness and has come to live with me for palliative care. Now I am also late to get home to her because of this inept service department. I also missed a Hannford's to go pick up because they closed at 6pm and I never got home until 620 pm ( 12 hours after I left this morning!). Hannafords is upset with me. I had to cancel my order because of this!. I will never return to this dealership and I do not reccomend it to anyone! If there was a way to give zero stars I would! I hope the owner sees this because I would like to talk to them. read more

I just bought a used car from Portland Volvo. I had seen the vehicle on line at cargurus.com and had started negotiation with the dealer that had the vehichle--Kia of Saco. In the middle of our talks that dealership was sold and the vehicle ended up at Portland Volvo. When I was sent up there, I discovered that the price on the car had increased by a few thousand dollars. I called and talked to Tom who reluctantly agreed to sell me the vehicle at that price if I drove it and like it. I got there and had been assigned Hallie--the only female on the floor. Personally I prefered having a woman work with me --she was great. I didn't drive out with the car because because their finance manager--Jason was out that day. He called me the first thing the next morning and got the deal done and he got me a great rate. He was a super guy. After I got the car home, I thought there was something funny going on with the front seat. I brought the car in and they told me they would have to get apporval from the manager as to what to do next. Though it took them about 4 days to get back to me, they finally checked it out and it turned out everything was fine. I thought that was good customer service. Overall the experience was good. I will say that the used car manager was not exactly warm and fuzzy and didn't even smile when I walked into his office to thank him. I think he needs to brush up on his people skills and smile at those of us who can only afford to buy a car for less than 13,000. My impression of him is the only reason I wouldn't give Portland Volvo a higher rating. read more

We just had a really good experience at Portland Volvo. Our salesman was Ralph D'Angelo. He's old school, which we liked. He focused on the pros and cons of the cars. He was patient with my wife's test driving - five cars! He took the time to understand how we use the vehicle and was good about making sure we understood how each choice would meet or miss the mark. We were looking at both new and used options. In the end, we bought a manager's demo XC60AWD T6. It's only been a couple of days, but so far we love it. My buying experience at Portland Volvo did not have any flaws.I despise buying cars as a rule; 35 years of showroom antics will do that to you. Portland Volvo is not the biggest dealership, but I found their straightforwardness to be refreshing. I was glad that we had Ralph as our salesman, too. I'd seek him out again if I were buying another car. read more

My wife and I purchased a new XC 60 T6 last week from Portland Volvo. The day after the purchase we were hit with a snow storm. As always, I cleaned the snow off of the entire car to get it ready to travel 15 minutes to a local restaurant to pick up food. When I turned into the restaurant the cars wipers stoped working. Upon getting out of the car, I could hear a motorized sound making 3 consecutive noises. I got back into the car and switched the wiper control up and down to see if it would help remedy the situation. After doing this 3 times, I could tell there was a mechanical defect. I drove back home without the use of the wipers in extremely treacherous winter conditions. The visibility was horrific as the wipers were inoperable. I made an appointment the next day to have the wipers looked at. I was told by 2 service representatives and the sales representative that I had caused the issue by uses excessive force. I find this to be absolutely unacceptable. I have driven in snow storms for over 20 years and had a 2020 XC 40 for the past year and a half and have never ran into any issues with not removing snow in the appropriate way in order to allow the wipers to move with ease. My family has done business with Portland Volvo for over 20 years and this has left a very bad impression. Blaming the customer for something they did not do is unacceptable. There was an obvious defect in the car and the dealership was insisting that this happened because I did not remove snow from the windshield. This has been a very disheartening experience and I can only hope that other customers are not treated in this fashion. It has painted a very negative picture of the dealership. read more

The car had a ton of swirling from a previous bad buff job (black car) but their detail guy was able to make it perfect when I came back to pick it up. In fact, Portland Volvo provides the best customer service experience I've ever had anywhere. That's not a hyperbole. Staff are knowledgeable and clearly care about the product they're selling; which makes a difference. I've always felt like I've been treated fairly by their service department and they have gone above and beyond every time I've needed to bring my car in. Heat was not working so we asked them to replace blower motor. They asked for VIN number days earlier to order part. Disclosed a prior mechanic diagnosed car weeks earlier. Show up to appointment there is no part. Show up at 10- 10:15 AM. Dealer insist on diagnostic despite asking to replace blower. Over 2 hours later we ask for a status, technician says they can't read diagnostic codes on dash and its going to take at least 2 more hours. We ask them to finish up because at this point its just ridiculous. Get hit with a 300 dollar bill for diagnostic test.... I asked Kristen A if she disclosed the diagnostic charge to my wife prior to insisting on diagnostic. She said the cost is written on the door. She also asked if I was a technician over the phone because I questioned the methodology. Kristen said it could have been a short... Why on earth would I pay you 179+ for a diagnostic for a short fuse.. And by the way its not a short.. She said we shouldn't have used a dealer for this type of pricing, that they pay 100k a year for a special certification. They also charged us 89.88 to tell us the steering join is rusted and would need to be replaced. I feel bad for all the folks that just blindly accept people like this. At the end of the day we paid for a service which wasn't disclosed. Almost 4 hours in the shop for a simple problem that wasn't fixed... Car mechanics get a bad image from issues like this. This is disgusting and disappointing. Be warned. read more

I am a longtime Portland Volvo customer. I have never had any prior complaints. Recently, I took my car in for an inspection sticker and mentioned to them that I'd like the sticker in the corner instead of over 5 inches in my field of view (which was the placement last year). When I picked up my car, the sticker was in the exact same spot as last year so I asked them to move it into the corner. It was late in the afternoon, they were busy, and the service person was clearly annoyed with my request to reposition the sticker. He got in the car and started to drive away with my purse in the car without even saying anything to me. I called out to him and asked for my purse, which he handed me out the window. After I waited about 25 minutes, I approached the desk to ask about my car and a different service person told me they were waiting for a new tire. I did not have any tire work done. Then they explained that they had popped my tire when driving it into (or out of) the bay and they were getting me one new front tire. I had paid for an alignment that day and I figured you have to hit something pretty good to pop a tire so I asked for another alignment. They told me I didn't need that. When I got home, I learned that you should replace two front tires vs. one tire because different tread depths lead to less stability. When I called back to ask about this, they told me that was not the case because my 4 tires were somewhat new. I did reach out to Corporate Volvo and asked them to look into it. They came back and told me (this is a direct quote: They did move the location of the sticker. You had told them that customer you were pressed on time and the service writer did clip the tire on a curb trying to rush the vehicle back out to the service drive by mistake.) Then they told me (another direct quote) that Portland Volvo will not be participating in anything further for this customer. I guess, because they perceived that I was in a hurry, it was my fault. I asked Volvo corporate for the name and email address of the owner of Portland Volvo and they told me that they did not have that information (really?). What do you do when you are mistreated at a dealership (other than take your business elsewhere in the future). I'm just really surprised that no one will engage with me and at least address my question/concern about replacing just one tire. I'm not sure what has happened in the service department there, but it's definitely not the experience that I am accustomed to. Hopefully, the owner will be notified of this review and consider redirecting the service staff about their interactions with customers. read more

I give the parts department, specifically, Alan Kovaly and Bill Herold-Porter one star for their lack of etiquette and level of disrespect. I called to ask if I could return some cross-bars. When attempting to explain my request over the phone (two calls, one call to each of them), they each continually talked over me. It was to the point during the first conversation with Bill that I stopped what I was saying to ask if he could hear me (thinking I potentially had a bad cell connection), for him to respond with "oh yeah, I hear you". During my visit to the dealership to have them teach me how to remove and replace the bars, Bill continued to talk over me. I was sharing how upsetting it is to be talked over and during that very conversation he did it again. I would definitely not recommend buying from the Portland Volvo Parts department. I give 5 stars to sales and service. All the guys in the service department have been great to work with. I was in the process of making a deal on a Ford F150 with CoDy Seguin, who after I contacted him in writing (e mail)and asked if he had any interest in selling me the truck was turned over to Ralph who got caught in the middle .I started talking with CoDy on July 2nd . I spoke with Ralph and he had to tell me that the truck I wanted was sent to the auction there must not be any internal comunication.Then I was told that Tom would have the truck brought back for me if I was sincerely interested .I stated I was and would bring my trade in on the 10th (waiting on CoDy caused the delay) I was then that they sold it at the auction and realized Tom's word means nothing and as he repersents Portland Volvo.means thier word means nothing. Although the salesman I spoke to was friendly enough, when I was ready to talk numbers he basically refused, saying that they use "true pricing" (which, according to him, means they don't inflate prices so they can negotiate down. Instead, they list their cars at the "true value of the car") Interestingly, the car I wanted had been listed at 28,000 the day before and then reduced to 24,000. Portland Volvo (PV) was somewhat helpful in dealing with me purchasing a used vehicle from them remotely from the west coast. However several regrettable things happened: A. The shipper PV contracted was unable to give any shipping dates or insurance information. I searched for a shipper myself only to realize the shipping cost would be twice what PV suggested and would take much longer than originally promised. Bottom line: PV, check your sources and don't misinform your customers B. The vehicle was priced roughly at KBB retail, but I am not sure what was "retail" about it. Example: completely filthy air filter, dirty engine compartment C. The salesman I dealt with originally quit or was let go in the process. After that I got to speak to a gentleman named Mike who yelled at me uncontrollably over the phone and used sentences like "you have 60 seconds to speak" when I suggested that since we can't find a shipper, I'd like to revert the purchase (of a vehicle that never left their lot). bottom line: Mike, do yourself and others a favor and get a job that does not involve customer service. All and all I got a vehicle from PV, it's in reasonable mechanical condition, but lacking on upkeep an with damage resulting form it sitting on random outdoor lots prior to and during shipment. read more

I have to agree with Deborah W. Very condescending. Tried to a buy a car here a few years ago and the experience was so terrible I'm writing about it now. Sounds like not much has changed. Got the runaround for 5 days. "We've got the car that meets your requirements." Yay! Then came the truth...way over my price range, hidden upfront costs buried in the paperwork, you name it. I recently purchased our second vehicle from Portland Volvo and first used vehicle from them . They were upfront and honest w the purchase and we have had no trouble w the vehicle that we purchased. We also get all of our service done at PV for our Volvo xc90 and have been treated fairly. Any problems were resolved quickly, usually w a free loner vehicle. I would recommend purchasing a new or used vehicle from PV to anybody. If buying a used car do your homework via the web so you can appreciate the values that are offered at PV. read more

Portland Volvo management is horrible. They are rude and haven't a clue about customer service. Who argues with a client and prospective car buyer? It's all about their bottom line price - the customer is always wrong??? When you are buying a $35-50k vehicle, one would think the customer would be treated with respect. You simply can't do business like this without repercussions - why Mainers have tolerated these jokers and kept them in business is beyond me. Good riddance, I say. I love my Volvo but will certainly not get it serviced here anymore, as for buying a vehicle there, not a chance!! read more

We had an exceptionally great experience dealing with Portland Volvo Service. Joel, our service writer, went above and beyond, he demonstrated a high level of professionalism to diagnose our problem. Rather than throwing parts at our car, he spent the time to diagnose the problem which turned out to be much less of an issue than we had anticipated! His style was like a physician treating a patient and not the disease. He demonstrated concern in not performing unnecessary diagnostics but had his technicians go right to our areas of concern. Our vehicle spent the night there, and we were given a loaner car to drive home. We drove 70 miles to visit this specific Volvo dealership, bypassing our local Volvo dealership, because of their reputation for a great service. We have read some of the negative reviews but don't understand where they were coming from because we have received nothing but exceptional service from this dealership and in the future we'll return to purchase a new vehicle from them.
