I have been a client for many years now. I have gotten highlights, hair cuts and blow outs. My stylist is Sam. FYI: CASH ONLY Atmosphere: it's a medium sized warm, well lit, rustic and inviting space with a recent renovation. Work: I can really only speak for Sam. He is not only friendly and attentive but also very talented. He literally brought my hair back from the dead. I have thick, frizzy, and course hair. This means he has to spend more time on my hair and he never complains. I was platinum blonde for many years and then had to change my color because I couldn't keep up with the maintenance. I jumped around from many salons and had horrendous experiences or didn't like the plan the stylist came up with for my hair. Sam on the other hand came up with a very manageable plan. His plan centered around bringing my hair back to life, while also not compromising the color that I wanted. I love his haircuts and blow outs too. I like the wavy look when it comes to my blow outs and he nails it every time. My haircuts are usually layered and I have never been disappointed. Service: The owner Angela is always around and extremely warm and friendly just like the salon. She will walk around asking all the clients if they want food or something to drink. She takes pride in her salon and her stylists. Price: They are in the mid price range, which I think is average. Overall: The salon is worth the drive. Update: I recently moved away for school over the summer and stupidly got a haircut near my new city instead of waiting to go home and get my usual cut from Lindsay. I ended up with a terrible haircut (dreadful layers that made me look like a PS2 animated character). Anyway... I called last minute hoping to get an appointment with Lindsay before Christmas but unfortunately she was booked up! I completely understood of course, and made an appointment with another stylist named Sam. He is out of this world amazing at what he does!! He was so nice, and kept making sure he wasn't taking off too much length from my hair - but at that point I didn't care what he did - anything was better than my current cut. In all honesty Sam is a hair saver. My hair was so damaged from bleaching and box dye, it just looked like a sun dried tomato and he revived my hair to its natural state. He works with you and actually asks you what you want and explains step by step what he's going to do before he touches your scalp. He was able to turn my dark black hair into beautiful blonde hair, it took time but he definitely knew what he was doing. I wouldn't go anywhere else. I had my hair done by Megan a couple years ago when this salon had first opened and I was very pleased with the result, the staff, and the energy of the whole place! So A couple months ago I was due for a fix-me-up, walked into Positivity hair salon and WOW. What the hell happened? Lol First of all, i booked an appointment 2 months in advance and took off work just for them to call me the morning of the appointment on me because they wanted to close early due to lack of appts. (Nice) A week later when I finally got in the door, I wasn't greeted. There was nobody at the front desk. It seemed very chaotic in there. I had showed a picture to my stylist of what I wanted and she ACTUALLY told me what I wanted was outdated and unflattering. (It was just a picture of a regular highlighted blonde, so I'm not really sure what's outdated?) can you imagine? She then proceeded to call over another stylist to convince me that what I wanted for my hair wasn't nice. I would like to start with how much I Love my hair cut! I went to Sam and he did a beautiful job , he's very talented & easy to talk to. My experience at Positivity was going very well until I had to pay my bill. When I scheduled my appointment I had asked for someone because I liked her work from pictures I saw online and the woman who answered the phone said she was no longer with the salon. She said if I wanted to go to her she could give me the name and number of where she is now. Why would you send me away ?? I said no that's ok. I scheduled a cut and blow out and told $50. So I go to pay and I'm told $60 and I explained that's not the price I was given but the receptionist insisted I pay $60. Fine.. I give her my debit card and she refused to take it, no credit cards! I said well let's do debit but no debit either. I said that's not right no one told me over the phone ,I would of brought cash with me. But luckily they had an atm $6 dollars later I had my money. So I thought I was spending $50 and ended up spending $66 plus a $13 dollar tip. I asked to talk to the owner but she's unavailable until next Wednesday! Are you serious??? This was wonderful considering that I had gotten a botched haircut at another salon. The women at positivity are so nice and Jackie knows what she is doing! I have been at the same salon since I was 10 years old because I am not good with change but I knew I had to give Positivity a try. I found Positivity on instagram and decided to give it a try after seeing all of their amazing work. Jennie cut and highlighted my hair, as well as blew it out. Two months later I still get compliments on the color! Everyone is so nice and friendly. The consultation was very helpful, since I'm not very good at explaining what I want. The prices were very reasonable compared to similar salons on Staten Island. They have great products but are not pushy with them, which is a nice change from most other salons. Okay... personally I was only there twice and dealt with a young girl named Jennie. I hadn't had my hair cut in years, so I saw her. Immediately, she made me feel comfortable by informing me that my extremely long hair would only be cut as long as I wanted it. After insuring me that she would not go any higher than a certain length, she then proceeded to cut about 4 inches higher than that. Okay, I wasn't complaining too much. Yes, it bothered me that I walked in with hair at my waist and walked out with hair at my shoulders, but my hair had not been cut in years. And truth be told it was a GREAT haircut. The problem I had was my next visit. I asked for an ombre- my dark brown hair left alone with pink fading into purple. when I told her this is what I wanted she said no problem and asked if I wanted some pink streaks up in the front by my face, I immediately said no and said I didn't want that much bright color up so high in the front by my face. She said no problem and proceeded to do my hair. She kept asking her coworkers how to color my hair... I thought it was odd when she started lightening my hair about an inch from the root. I hadn't dyed my hair in over a decade, it was all new hair- I didn't understand why she was starting so high- but I kept my mouth shut because I figured she knew what she was doing. Big mistake... Big, big mistake... Needless to say I found out when she was talking to her coworker that what she did was a "rooted ombré" which I would never have asked for, nor would I have known what it was to ask for it. If I didn't want a couple of pink/purple streaks in the front, why would I want an entire head of pink and purple hair, with an inch of dark brown hair at the root? I basically paid about $200 to walk out of there with what looked like a head of pink hair that I dyed 8 months earlier, with my roots coming in. Also, I should mention that as a teenager I dyed my hair constantly, so I am aware of the impossibility of finding a permanent dye in those strange colors. I know that they fade and run, I know all of that... But I also know that when you apply dye, ESPECIALLY a semi-permanent dye, you leave it in the hair for more than 3 minutes, she lightened my hair for like an hour and then left the pink/purple on for no more than 3 minutes before rinsing it out. I knew that these colors were a big step, so I figured I would have them on the last 2 inches of hair, so if I happened to come to my senses in 3 months and hate it, I could just chop it off. If I did that now...I would have hair up to my ears, 2 weeks after spending $200 at this salon to do this to my shoulder length hair, I was spending $50 at Sally's for brown hair dye, to dye my hair the exact same color it was when I walked in there, by that point, it was orange, purple and green where the pink faded. Sally's will be getting a 5 star rating by the way. I will say this... That girl could cut hair. If you want a good cut, go... But there's a reason some people cut hair and some people are colorists... Don't try to do it all. Hell, I could never cut like that, or color like that... I'm glad that I read through all the reviews here on yelp because someone else stated that it was cash only...so I called back to ask what method of pmt they accept and they said it then. I told the lady who answered, (Connie, who was the only nice part of this whole thing), that they should let new customers know that and she apologized and said whoever took the appointment should have done so, absolutely. I have never been more happy with my hair than I have been since coming here. I made an appointment for a color, cut and blowout with Sam. I had cut my own hair and messed it up. I didn't have extremely high expectations going in because I had always been disappointed at other salons, which is why I went ahead and tried to cut my own hair. Anyways, the lady I spoke to on the phone was very helpful and told me I'd be in great hands with Sam. When I got there everyone was very welcoming. Sam offered to hang my coat and even brought me water. He was so great the entire time. He cut my hair little by little and showed me what I would look like every time to make sure that I didn't go shorter than I'd like. In the end my hair was so perfect. Was looking for a new salon and stumbled across this place. I have long hair, and when I saw all the pictures of services they provided to women with long hair I was sold. Sometimes stylists just feel like the can't make certain things happen while keeping the length. Jackie gave me the exact cut I wanted; fullness and layers while remaining long. Hair looked great. The place is decorated very nicely but it is very small. They make it work, but the space was packed. My cut and blow out was only $40! I will return. They have a parking lot but it was packed too. I know that it takes anywhere from 2-3 months to get an appointment with a hair stylist that is why I called 2 months in advance to book an appointment with Angelica for May. I knew my appointment date is coming up so I called the salon to confirm the date. The receptionist picked up and told me that the hairstylist does not work there any longer!!! What does that mean.. my appointment disappears? She offered A new hairstylist for the following week but I want someone with experience. I asked if she can book me an appointment with Megan but since she's been working there The longest she said that it is not possible. The next available appointment is in the the end of July. I went here a couple of times. I heard about them from many people who rave about this place so I was confident I was going to get exactly what I wanted. So here are the positives: my hair stylist was really friendly and they did the right thing, for example my stylist was running late and gave me a free deep conditioning for waiting. That was really professional. The hair products are AMAZING! My hair was dry from a previous salon and in two visits my hair was back to where it once was. Lastly love the blow out What I didn't love: my very first consultation was rushed and as a result instead of my medium brown hair I left almost black. I went there a second time and wanted them to lift my hair. I have lifted my hair in the past so I know it possible but when I tried to explain it she didn't get it and instructed me to do highlights. I did them despite the fact I didn't want them because she made it out to be the only way I could lighten my hair. I did it and although it looked slightly lighter my roots were still very dark. People could hardly tell I had lightened it. When you go in thinking your gonna get out one way and get a totally different result after spending almost $200 it's disappointing and frustrating. Lastly and mostly the cash only rule. Reality is when you do your hair the price is never exact so even if you took money out you usually are short. So when I made my first appointment I was never told cash only, so when I presented my card the receptionist looked at me like a crazy person. She was slightly rude and made me uncomfortable. "Conveniently" they have an ATM. It's not that I would never go back. But I am going to another salon to get my hair to a slightly lighter level as my stylist here has difficult knowing what to do. read more

If I could give negative 10 stars I would. The owner is a nasty person who should not be in this business if she doesn't understand customer service. I went there got my hair done and paid $300. I asked for a dark ombré and left with just a few peek a boo highlights. They told me they couldn't achieve it because I have a red undertone. I went back 3 weeks later and asked for a color correction. She achieved the color I wanted. Two days later I washed my hair with the shampoo and conditioner she told me to buy, and my hair turned reddish/pink. When I called the salon the owner told me she couldn't do it anything for me or refund me because she "doesn't know what I do outside of the salon" which is bullshit because your stylist told me to use a shampoo and condintner that I used. The owner told me she could give me a complementary glaze. Sorry but a 40 dollar glaze doesn't compare to 600 dollars in a 3 week span. read more

I received a gift card to this salon for a blowout and a haircut. I made an appt for this past Saturday at 3pm with a girl who not sure of her name but starts with an A. I walk in the receptionist asks my name and tells me to have a seat. Place was pretty empty for a Saturday two men stylists and one girl. The girl who I'm guessing is supposed to do my hair stops doing her clients hair and goes over to one of the guy workers who then comes over to me and asks if I would rather him do my blowout because she is busy. I felt that I was put on the spot and not to offend him or wind up waiting an hour I said ok since it was just a blowout. This review is not meant to be negative toward him so I won't mention names. He was very nice and professional, although I don't think has much experience with hair especially long hair like mine. I told him my hair frizzes at curls at the root and when the blowout was done it was frizzy and curly and the underneath of my hair was still pretty damp, again he was nice didn't want to say anything as I could go home and fix it myself. Now the fun part, I give my gift card to the woman and she tells me I can't use it Bc I only got a blowout and not a haircut. I explained I didn't want the cut and she can throw out the gift card I don't mind losing out on the cut since I have my regular stylist. She tells me no I have to get both. I tried to explain how idiotic that is since I'm getting less of the service and they are making out on the deal. She obviously wasn't getting it and tells me come back with it when i want a cut. I couldn't be bothered at this point so I give her my debit card for a 40.00 blowout that my 12 year old son could have produced better results and she tells me they don't take debit. I had 20 cash on me and she tells me they have an atm. At that point I asked to speak to owner who was unavailable. I refused to use atm and pay the fee when I had a gift card. I gave her a choice to take the gift card or the 20 cash. She took the gift card after 20 min. I WILL NEVER RETURN HERE. Other than the pretty decor this place was a nightmare. I've been coloring my hair for the past thirteen years now, and this is by far the worst salon I have ever been to. They are rude, snotty and there is absolutely nothing "positive" about this salon. I made an appointment three and a half months in advance only to be rescheduled days before my appointment with a new stylist, who in my opinion, had no idea what he was doing. I came in and asked for my ombre to be touched up with a few foils in the front. From the second I sat in the chair, the stylist did nothing what I asked for. After the first process, my hair was very dull and looked as if it hadn't been dyed at all. There were no foils applied to my hair (which I specifically asked for) and my hair appeared yellow. After they noticed I was unhappy, they applied a second application... all throughout, everyone made me feel extremely uncomfortable. I again asked for foils, and rather than foil, the stylist painted thick thick chunks of blonde an inch from my root. For the few foils that were applied to my hair, an entire inch of root was left out at the top. After the second application, I had an entire head of YELLOW hair with an inch of root!! Having sat in a chair for seven hours, I didn't want to seem overbearing or be any more uncomfortable than I already was. To boot, I was charged $240!!!! I was so upset and reached out to the salon the following day, and they sent me and extremely nasty letter stating they would refund the bill but are canceling all of my future appointments because of my "negative energy".
