The restaurant is very casual as you would expect a sandwich shop to be ... somewhat similar to a Subway but a little nicer. The counter workers were all very friendly and helpful and patient with me while I made my selection. Ingredients were fresh and they offer lots of options. I visited this Potbelly several times; the atmosphere and service (for a sandwich shop chain) is good. I'm usually in and out relatively fast and the staff is friendly and personable. The food, being a chain is not 100% site specific. Wreck on Wheat is my go-to and my experience at every Potbelly I've patronized is consistent. I stepped out my comfort zone a little and went w the tuna on wheat, which is my Subway go-to and the sandwhich was dry. Unlike Subway they don't add mayo to their Tuna, at least nothing noticeable. This is just something to note as my next attempt I'll ask for mayo or maybe mustard as it was dry wo it. Not an issue just an observation. read more

I work near this Potbelly and have gotten food from here dozens of times for lunch. I always get the food to go. My order is always made correctly and the food is always ready on time. The staff is friendly and the place looks clean although I never spend much time in there and can't really speak on the dine in experience. And the most important part is the food is great! Boss decided last night he wanted to do something for National Nurse Practitioners Week. So he handed me his credit card and asked if I would help him arrange for an in office casual lunch. I immediately thought of Potbelly. I have had their yummy toasted sandwiches before, plus they serve Zapp's chips (THE best). I thought we could probably figure something out that would make everyone happy for lunch. So first thing this morning when I opened their website. I was thrilled to see they only needed an hour for a catering order. So I placed an order for two big box bundles (sandwiches, condiments, chips and cookies). The big box bundle offers a nice variety, including a vegetarian option. You can select your delivery and, boom, you are ready to go! With 2 big box bundles, I had lunch for 20. The nice delivery guy showed up exactly on time, set up my lunch, and within minutes, our group was happily chowing down. I really wanted to like Potbelly...so much so that I visited three more times after my first mediocre experience. My standards for a quality sandwich are fairly high. I appreciate crusty bread, fresh meats, and cheese that makes the whole bite pop. I've tried a few different sandwiches (Italian, Cuban, chicken salad) and also a breakfast item (bacon, egg, and cheese bagel) -- and they were all bland and boring. The bagel was pretty greasy as well. Yesterday's service also irked me. When I walked in around dinner time, I looked at the menu board as it had been a while since my last visit. One of the guys mumbled something about telling me to give them a few minutes (I think..?) even though I obviously wasn't ready. When I was ready, no one would make eye contact for some time. Eventually I was told where to place my order (I had walked up farther as no one was looking at me). The guy seemed slightly annoyed that I requested two sandwiches because he obviously wanted to continue chatting over my head about football with the man in line behind me who he knew. I also requested an Oreo milkshake and they asked if yogurt was fine. I said I'd prefer ice cream, and they replied that they taste exactly the same. I said fine. (Definitely not the same, btw. Also a super small portion for the price.) Once I chose the bread type and size, I waited an oddly long period of time...mostly wondering what to do. Eventually another guy walked up (I assume he had been on break) and asked me what I wanted on the sandwiches. He then wrapped them up and placed them at the check out. I then stood there for at least ten minutes until he turned to me again and asked if I needed to pay. Like, sorry dude, but did you see me move the entire time you were prepping sandwiches? I handed him the $4 off coupon for July and paid $17.43 for my order. I later realized that means it's unlikely he actually applied the discount (unless tax cost $4). My fault for not taking a receipt. Also, my Italian was hot. I wasn't given the option of hot or cold. I think it's ridiculous to serve hot Italian sandwiches, but perhaps that's just the Philly-native in me coming out. The sandwich was somewhat better after I put it in the fridge. Considering the average products, uncomfortable and laggy service, and steep prices for the quality, I really don't see a reason to return any time soon. read more

I usually don't write bad reviews, and I never write a review based on one visit and this is no exception. I've had catered sandwiches from this location, I've gone multiple times by myself and with groups around lunchtime, busy, moderate, and not busy. The last time was NOT busy. I had all the time in the world, chose my order, stepped up to the cluttered order area, waited for my prompt. When it came, it was barely audible with no eye contact. Wasn't sure if the gentlemen was talking to me or someone on the line. I gave my order and was prompted for bread type, which was also barely audible, so while I was trying to decipher what was asked, the sandwich maker repeats his question (in 2 seconds), but in a rude and condescending tone, as if I was somehow holding up progress when there's no one behind me in line. Down the line, a lady asks which sandwich I'm waiting for plenty loud and with eye contact, so I answered within the requisite 0.5 seconds. Then I had a question about my sandwich related to a food sensitivity and was quickly corrected that the sandwich being worked on was not mine, as if I had accused them all of a crime. The second star goes to the cashier, who was informative and pleasant. As stated, I base reviews on multiple visits to get the true feel of a place. Previous visits were not significantly different. I kept returning thinking they just had a bad day. Well, no more repeating the same thing expecting different results. Potbelly downtown is out. That's a shame because I liked the sandwiches. I just refuse to condone bad service and rude behavior. read more

Heck, I've even been customer of the week (back in July) - I'm straight up famous in this place. The BIG Italian is what you should go with. I finally got over to check this place out today. It was finally sunny & warm with no rain. Me and a Co-Worker decided to walk over and get some lunch. It was about 1115a on a Tuesday and so it was not too busy yet. I've eaten at the Reston, Va location and found it to be good food. I had the Wreck, a great and meaty choice. Easy to order, easy to pay, good quality and value for the price. My Co-worker was not so fortunate. He was double charged on his credit card. He caught it after he saw the Service Rep scan his card twice. They said it should come off his charge the next day. He was not pleased and said it was a very poor first impression and he would not be going back. read more

Did a mobile order from this location. Made a mistake on the order and had to call in to fix it. The staff person I spoke to to make the change was nice and the order was changed properly on pick up. My order was ready on time, in a sealed bag, and in the mobile pick up area. I did not have to interact with anyone. What one other Yelp reviewer noted is true about Potbellies around the country and not just this location. If they are busy and you are not ready to order, then they may ask you to let the next person go till you decide. How each store asks varies on degree of politeness. However, most customers, not just at Potbelly, but most placed I've been have the common sense to let the person behind them go next if they are not ready and especially if it is busy without having to be asked--it is common sense and common courtesy. Of course they is aka ways someone with a large family and small kids that goes up when it is busy and takes forever to decide what to order. Another reason I like to mobile order when possible--don't deal with service people or other customers who may be rude. This store looked clean and safe when I picked up. New eateries near where I work is exciting. New eateries about 100 feet below where I work is even more exciting. I love a good deli sandwich as much as the next person, so I was excited to try it out (I've also never been to a Potbelly before). --Food: I've eaten here three times for lunch and once for breakfast already. Yes, I know it's been open for 4 days now. Let it be. What I've had so far: - Pizza Sandwich on Regular, chips, and a fountain drink. There was a soft opening special event where this lunch combo was only $5. This was my first sandwich at a Potbelly's and it had pepperoni, meatballs, capicola, mushrooms, cheese, and marinara sauce. It was good and the toasty-ness of the bread makes it all better. I will say that there wasn't much in the way of meat, so I'm not sure if this is normal for this sandwich or not. The chips, while good enough, were just name brand (Zapps and Lays) chips and not inhouse or anything like that. - Turkey and Swiss, add Bacon, with mayo, hot peppers, and onion. I got this on a Big just to see the difference and it's a couple inches longer I say. (Forgot my measuring tape at home). I really enjoyed this, with the hot peppers and bacon being the star. Maybe not the most meat again, but I thought it was adequate, and overall very tasty. - Small Chili. Their chili is made with "ground beef, kidney beans, onions and bell peppers, sweetened with a touch of molasses". While good, I found it a little too sweet, but I think it's all personal preference. - Ham, Cheese, Egg, Mushroom breakfast square. The squares are small but the price reflects this and overall a very tasty breakfast option. I really like the bread and to me it outshines any bagel or muffin type sandwich you can get. - A Wreck. This is my favorite thing so far. This bad boy has salami, roast beef, turkey, ham, and swiss. I added bacon, onion, hot peppers, and a touch of mayo. I also got this on Big bread, and I left thoroughly satisfied from this. It wasn't overstuffed but I could taste all of the individual items and had it all tied together with the spiciness of their hot peppers, toasty bread, and underlying bacon-y flavor. Big fan, will get again. --Cost: A regular size sandwich costs about $5.50, a big is $7, and things like Bacon are about a $1 extra. Hot peppers and normal condiments are free. Reference menu if you want the full breakdown, but all in all, not really that much more or less than Subway. I will say though if you get a big sandwich with bacon and pretty much anything else, it'll put you over $10. Reasonable given the area, so take that as you will. --Atmosphere: This Potbelly opened in Gateway Plaza, a new building that finished the bulk of its construction in mid 2015. It's a new building, and this Potbelly is done pretty nicely. There is a decent amount of seating given the location, but I hear it gets super busy at main lunch time. I have a late lunch so I luckily don't have to experience this. The actual place is pretty laid back and comfortable though, and I like the high chairs that some of the high tables have. Maybe a little loud. --Service: Hmmm. So here's the thing. The employees are all really nice. They're all willing to answer questions and provide a friendly experience. The obvious standout though is lack of experience and consistency. You can tell that some of the line staff isn't super familiar with the menu items yet, and while it doesn't bother me, hearing them ask each other "does this go on this one?" is noticeable. Like I said, doesn't bother me, but you can tell most people are new to the franchise. I also had an interesting situation where I ordered a Big Turkey with Bacon one day and it came to about $10.50, and a Big Wreck with Bacon the next and it came to about $9.30. The Wreck should have cost more, so I'm not sure which one was rang out incorrectly, so I don't know if I was overcharged for one or undercharged for the other. Ultimately didn't matter, I received a tasty sandwich either way, but they definitely got this wrong. They do have plenty of good things going for them though! Most of the staff is super friendly, unlike some of the places around here. No names will be mentioned, but I would far rather make small talk with employees at Potbelly than some places around the corner or across the street. They also seem happy to explain how it all works, because honestly I was a bit confused at the layout and what station does what (meat and cheese, toppings, etc). I have no doubt that everyone will get better, since afterall they're only been open about a week now. --Overall: Being able to take an elevator down to this Potbelly's is nice. Really nice. I enjoy their toasty subs quite a bit more than Subway and Jimmy John's. Hopefully with more time and experience the inconsistencies will be ironed out, but so far I'm very pleased with my experiences here. If you work in the area, definitely check it out! read more

My coworkers and I stopped by today to get lunch today and it was such a weird experience. The employee taking orders barely spoke loud enough to be heard, and when I asked if I could add turkey to my sandwich he gave me the ugliest look and said nothing. My coworker who ordered after me said that employee was rude to him when he asked about what he could add to his sandwich. The employee adding toppings also seemed to have a giant attitude, but again, not sure why. When she handed me my sandwich, I said thank you and she just stared at me. The employee who rang me up was OVERLY nice.. When I went to eat my sandwich it was made wrong. I paid $15 for my meal and wish I could take it back. Won't be back. read more

Just tried this place for lunch. The food tastes amazing and everything seems fresh. The people working the line though don't seem to know what they're doing. They got the type of bread I wanted on my sandwich wrong, and the topping that I wanted were also wrong even though I repeated what toppings I wanted to the guy three times. The price is a little steep but for the quality of food you get it's worth it. FINALLY a decent lunch spot close to where I work!! I've had salads and sandwiches from this place, and both were satisfying. I can recommend the wreck on wheat with hot peppers. The line was out the door but moved quickly during the lunch hour. They also have awesome cookies!! And an option to order a ginormous ice cream cookie sandwich for when you're feeling reallllly glutinous. The only reason I knocked off a star is because parking can be annoying. When I got back to work and opened it up on the first half I saw one slice of ham and one slice of roast beef, and a tiny edge of a slice of turkey which is almost no meat but I ate it and it was tasty but definitely needed more meat. Then I opened the second half and there was one slice of turkey covering less than half the sandwich! 3 slices of meat on a 9" sandwich is unacceptable to me and for that reason I will not be going back. Sandwich was very good, staff not so much. The man who was taking orders made eye contact once or twice and didn't say anything and finally said "I'm ready." I ordered a large sub and wanted two extra toppings on one half of the sub. One lady was putting the toppings on and another man came over to say "you know you could have just ordered two smaller subs and then got your separate toppings." I'm obviously very aware of that and chose to do it this way for a reason. I was not asked "how can I help you today" or "what can I get you" just "I'm ready" before placing my order, no one smiled or was friendly and I felt uncomfortable, like none of the staff wanted to be there and being treated like I was incompetent. I'm aware I could buy two subs but it's cheaper to split one big one and get the same amount of sub which is why I did it in the first place.
