It's also my secret weapon when I need a unique last-minute gift - easy to bundle a plant or dish garden with a card and cute items for your home. Great native plant selection too! The staff is always really polite and friendly. The inside shop is very cute. I noticed post COVID the same care isn't there for plants unfortunately. I unknowingly purchased a holly that had Asian jumping worm infestation. When notified no actions were taken from nursery. I am a rose lover and went to admire their extensive David Austin collection. They do not deadhead or maintain the roses. By the end of season the majority of DA roses had RRD, a devastating disease to roses. I hope no one purchased and brought those into their rose garden. I would pass on this garden center because unless you are ok risking bringing pests/disease into your garden. read more

PGC is our neighborhood nursery. While they don't have everything we need, we find most of what we need here. And they offer a great guarantee policy if your plants are sick or a dud. Things I love about PGC... 1. The staff that works on the floor are super helpful and knowledgeable. We've probably asked numerous questions that could have been easily googled, and they still humor us every time by going above and beyond. 2. There are two resident cats that hang around and sleep on random bags of soil. It's like a where's waldo game and I love it. 3. They had very good COVID protocols set up during the pandemic and in the beginning of reopening. I really appreciated this. 4. There was a period during the pandemic that I was badly injured and had to be in a wheelchair for a bit. Not only is PGC wheelchair accessible, the employees were extremely helpful with being able to bring items to the car for me and to accommodate me as much as I needed. Most prices are reasonable. Some of the pots are overpriced but they tend to have some pretty good sales. Parking is pretty easy even when it's busy. They have a side lot as well as another one in the back. read more

First experience here pre-COVID was less than stellar: I pre-ordered a specific plant for my plant-loving-sister's birthday. I went in, told them about my pre-order and checked out. The young woman had her cat wandering all over the counter near me (keep in mind I'm deathly allergic to cats and I did tell the woman), but she made no attempt whatsoever to put the cat away/aside. The other times I've visited for garden supplies (like tomato cages, soil enriched, etc.), I've had really good experiences, even during COVID. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and for the most part, helpful. Prices are standard on some items and pricey on others, really depending on what you buy. Especially if you are looking for specialty items that you cannot find at the typical chain hardware stores, this is def a place to hit up. read more

I needed to transport some orchids and came looking for orchid pots with holes on the sides. Not only did they have them, they were $5 each! So much more affordable than the $30 pots on Amazon. You'll able to find a variety of common, easy to grow, indoor plants like dieffenbachias, pothos, and calatheas. They also have cute terrarium plants. I've been multiple times and the staff are always caring and helpful. My only complaint is that they have no basic small pots (like those you would put on your desk). All small pots are expensive home decor looking pieces. It's inconvenient that I always have to go elsewhere to buy these. They've switched to a winter set up so the large tent area housing all the indoor plants is enclosed now instead of the open concept they had in the warmer months. read more

I have bought my Christmas tree at PGC for the past few years. I began going here during the pandemic as most places were either closed or did not have many choices. They have a great selection and the prices are fair. The trees are nice and last throughout the season with the proper watering. Customer service is great and everyone has been super helpful. PGC always has some plants that have been on my wishlist! The first time I went, I had been to for other nurseries looking for a Monstera deliciosa. PGC has them in two sizes! (I'm not good with estimating pot size but I want to say 6" or 8" pot for $18, and 12" pot for around $40) I also saw a variegated maidenhair fern, which was super excited because I've never seen a variegated one before! Their indoor plant selection is not super large though - probably would not recommend f you're looking for succulents or cacti, as hey we're pretty limited. They also had other plants that are less "cool" to me, as they're more common, such as philodendron selloum, prince of orange, calatheas, and various types of pothos. I think some of the plants can be a bit overpriced, and a lot of their more finicky houseplants such as calatheas, begonias, and maranthas looked a bit crispy on the edges, possibly due to mineral deposits in the water or a lack of humidity. The other time I went, I happened to see a nepenthes (pitcher plant!) hanging above me. It was $30, and 6" or 8". Most of all, a lot of the pitchers looked healthy, especially the large pitchers. Maybe it should've been concerning that the smaller, newer pitchers had become a bit crispy? But I had been to a ton of nurseries that had either sarracenias or nepenthes, and they were all much smaller and much worse off. Overall, PGC is a bit overpriced, but always has some pleasant surprises for me in terms of plants on my wishlist. A lot of the employees are also pretty young, and friendly. read more

I quite like the Potomac Garden Center, the staff is knowledgeable about the plants they have much more so than the home improvement stores that get plants in the springtime. They will also replace any plants or give you a refund on any plants that die within a year of buying them with pics of plants or a receipt. read more

This review is to compliment the Potomac Garden Center (PGC) at their North Potomac location, with particular praise for Greg. He is the person there that is the plant and landscaping expert who has been amazing helping not only me and my family (extended members, included!), but also the many folk from my community and congregation I have recommended they check out PGC. Greg (not sure what his last name is, but he is almost always there most days and available if you ask any staff person there for him). He provides excellent advice, including not only for when you want to buy plants, bushes, trees, etc. but also if/whenever you might be worried about something. If you are having an issue, bring a sample of your plant to PGC and Greg will analyze the problem for you (he has a microscope and other techniques there on site that he uses if needed in his analysis). We have extensive landscaping throughout the properties we have and I have tried to work with various centers over the years. In fact, we used to consistently go to another center in Potomac when Greg worked there before PGC smartly hired him away from them! We followed him to PGC and became a loyal PGC customer after that. It is very hard to find anyone at any of the surrounding plant and garden centers who have his level of knowledge on new and existing plants and/or if you are having problems with your existing plants, bushes, trees, etc. You may wonder why I am writing this review now with such praise for Greg in particular. It is because he recently helped my wife (who can be rather "selective" and specific, and who also praises Greg like I do) with a new project. With it being the holiday season and thinking at this time of year about what is positive and who to thank to thank for that, this review is in large part to thank Greg for his professionalism and for his help with stuff both large and small. And while, hands down/no doubt, he is a true asset there at PGC, I also want to compliment the Center overall. The staff overall are friendly, ready to offer assistance on straightforward purchases or if you need to find something you are looking for. If you go there/shop there, I would also recommend checking out the area inside they have set up as a sort of gift shop (separate from the area where they have an extensive inventory of garden supplies). That gift area seems to always have interesting items (not just garden related). Ok, I will stop here with this-- if you are interested in either filling in a corner of your property with something pretty/interesting or want to design a full scale landscaping project, I recommend you talk with Greg. The old saying goes..." you get what you pay for...." Well my friends, this is soooo true, especially when we're talking FIREWOOD! PGC, where have you been all my life?!? For years, we have been purchasing firewood from folks, chopping down their own firewood, thinking we could save a few bucks. Thinking that the firewood sold at nurseries would be waaaaay too expensive. Boy was I wrong. Last week, we decided to "try" the Kiln dried firewood at PGC. This firewood was by far the BEST firewood we have EVER used! As promised, the wood burned slowly and efficiently in our JOTUL wood stove. We were able to heat our entire first floor by just burning a few logs per day in the JOTUL. So, for the price and the outstanding quality, their firewood is by far the BEST firewood we have ever ever used! We will continue to purchase their firewood for years to come! But it gets better: the folks at PGC, were all soooo nice! Carol was extremely knowledgeable about the different types of woods to burn, indoors, outdoors, wood burning stove, open air outside, etc. she was able to help me select the Kiln Dried Firewood and we are so glad we did! Benito, the gentleman who loaded my little SUV with the firewood, made sure to completely cover the area with plastic so as not to scuff up my vehicle. Everyone was all smiles at this place! I have done business with this business for about 4 years. This is year will be the last. Such horrible customer service. There are only teenagers answering the phone and no one called me back for 3 weeks - and I called at least weekly to place a special order for annual house plants. I am still shocked that these children blocked me from speaking to ANYONE in authority, failed to take a written message and see that it was delivered, and had no idea that being 'chipper' on the phone would NOT substitute for actually helping an established past customer! Then, after 3 weeks of no callback, someone finally called back and left a message that she wanted to 'follow up' to see if I'D GOTTEN MY PLANTS?????? She said she saw a message on the BULLETIN BOARD, noted it had been there for 'a few weeks' and just wanted to follow up. Results: NO, no one had EVER called me back. I never was able to place an order with anyone and no one had offered to take my special order. When I did my research and found Mr. David Angell is the owner of the company and has an office at this address, I called and asked for him specifically - I was once again blocked by the teenager on the phone! Mr. David Angell, DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR EMPLOYEES ARE DOING TO CALLERS??? DO YOU CARE???? ARE YOU SO ANTI-SOCIAL THAT YOU HAVE INSTRUCTED YOUR PEOPLE TO NOT PUT CALLS THROUGH TO YOU???? ARE YOU AFRAID A PHONE CALL WOULD END YOUR LIFE??? RESOLUTION: I've found my plants at another vendor and will never ever 'give Potomac Gardens another chance'. 3 weeks to try and do business with them is 2 weeks more than I usually give a company with such lack of regard for past customers. I was so surprised at seeing the negative reviews that I decided I would finally create an account and see for myself if Potomac Garden Center deserved the negativity. I'm just beginning my journey into gardening (after years of believing that I can't help but kill everything I touch), and I knew that I would have to go to a garden store that would have everything I'd need to get started and plenty of experienced staff. Potomac Garden Center is exactly what I was hoping for. From the outside, I wasn't sure what to expect, but as I continued to enter the garden center, I was really impressed with what I saw. Flowers everywhere, of course, and lots of adorable spring garden decor. There were plenty of workers helping the handful of other customers in the store, and it wasn't long until I was able to start asking them all of my questions about gardening. I told them I was new and had never successfully grown anything in my entire life, and they knew exactly what I needed to get started. I bought 3 types of herbs and two neat windowsill green houses that came with these handy little peat pods, and it all was reasonably priced. I can't remember the name of the first woman I spoke to, but the second woman was named Sherry (not sure how it's spelled), and both were very friendly. They welcomed me to the area and were just as enthusiastic about my starting out with gardening as I was. I don't know why some of the other reviewers experienced bad customer service, because there were plenty of other customers in the store and I didn't have to wait very long at all. The lady behind the desk was super helpful in helping me pick out a nice one and in addition to educating me on the care also added some moss and shined up the leaves. Well-kept place with unique items but it's overpriced and their customer service (management) is terrible.

The selection seems pretty good at PGC but this place offers no actual guarantee of the plants being sold. While they tout a "one year guaranee", this is actually not true. Yes, the plants can be replaced if returned within one year, but if the replacement plants also die, as mine did within three months, there is no guarantee on those plants. So if your replacement plants also die, you are out of luck and out of plants. Also, the staff has zero authority regarding returns, credits, etc. -- they must contact corporate headquarters for a decission! Amazing. I've shopped here for 15 years, but not anymore! Staff needs to be trained better. The North Potomac store has a food truck on Wednesdays through Sundays according to the sign on the road in front of the entrance. When I called this Sunday I was told (at two different times) that the food truck was there and operating. When I arrived, the sign was out on the road, but the food truck was not open. I was then told, the operator didn't show up today. We'll, couldn't someone tell me that before I drove all the way over there? I had planned to buy some plants, but decided against it. I love this place. Yes they are a little pricier than a box store! But you get what you pay for - the quality/variety of the plants and the great advice make the slight uplift way worth it. I was really surprised at the negative reviews but then I realized that most are pretty old, and a few years ago I was not as impressed with PGC. Every single time I come into Potomac Garden Center I leave happy. And with way more than I go in there for! From the friendly and knowledgeable staff to the adorable cat running through and greeting the customers! Not only is the place absolutely gorgeous, If ever I have a question the staff there never seems bothered by how stupid my question might be! Even the cashiers are so friendly and it is clear they are eager to learn from those who know about the plants and chemicals. I always see them paying attention and asking questions right along with me in order to glean as much of an education in this as they can! I will always recommend Potomac Garden Center to my friends! Unfortunately had a really bad experience here - we raise Monarch caterpillars/butterflies, and we usually just get wild milkweed every few days. We've been doing this for over 20 years. We had a long trip coming up during that time this year, and found that Potomac Garden Center has large milkweed you could buy. After inquiring about what they use on the milkweed to keep the pests off (there were zero bugs on them, which was kind of strange), they said they use a chemical that gets rid of aphids, but it completely safe for the caterpillars. Sounded good - until we brought the plants home and put the caterpillars on them. Every single one died within just a few days of being on the plant and eating - they stopped moving, and eventually turned black. We lose maybe one caterpillar every few years, and we lost every single one we put on those plants. Very clear that whatever they put on their plants, it is absolutely not safe for caterpillars. Very saddened and disappointed. read more

After pulling out 22 years of overgrown plants in our front yard, we decided to go to Potomac Garden Center for the plants we needed. There we meet Gilly. She was very knowledgeable about the plants and tree that were on our plant list/plan. We walked the grounds and she help us decide which plant would be best for where it was going in the yard. Sometimes, it was a better selection than what was on our list. After the selections were made landscapers came from Potomac Garden Center to plant everything. They did an excellent job. There are plenty of other garden centers in the area and they are more friendly and willing to answer any and all questions you have. It's a shame that after our experiences, we have decided to shop at a garden center in Damascus instead of this one despite living 2 minutes away from this one. Recently I have been very into gardening and this place was recommended to me by a friend. So I decided to go and see what all the fuss was about. I was very interested in growing a medical herb plant like we used to grow in Soviet Russia. We would then give these herbs to the government and they would do whatever they wanted with them. I remember me and my cousins would sneak a couple grams of this herb for our own use. Those were the days sitting back in Russia playing hockey and drinking vodka with some of our special herb. Anyways when I was trying to get help the workers were very nice and helped me find what I needed. Sadly there was a language barrier (as can be understood) and I ended up walking home with Lilly of the Valley. I decided to infuse my plant in Russian Fruit Cake like we used to do in Soviet Russia. I became very ill and had to self medicate myself with Novacane and Xanax. These drugs did nothing and I was sent to the hospital immediately. Luckily my superior immune system could take anything I have ever put in my body (special thanks to the Soviet government). Overall this was a very enlightening experience that I recommend everyone should try once in their life. read more

I purchased several arborvitae trees from Potomac Garden Center. I had a great experience because I purchased the trees at a great price, and the person who delivered the trees (Chad) was quick with the delivery. Chad also did a great job hauling the trees to my patio, and when he was done he asked me if I had any questions. I will do more business with this nursery. I am a long-time customer here and I have been very happy with the friendly service and selection of flowers/plants. But this year, I walked in and was not ever greeted, but instead shooed out if the back where it is now empty. Not a single person offered to help me. The selection was still fairly good unless you are looking for indoor tropical plants they had very little. read more

Here are the facts - you decide: I planted a few flowers in the front of our townhouse unit, which were still there two days later. Then, the PGC mowers came through one morning, and upon leaving our house about 15 minutes later I saw some of the flowers were cut down to about 3 inches, and one was pulled out of the ground. I immediately called PGC and was told they would take care of it. Three days later, I received a call from PGC stating that deer had eaten the flowers and they are not responsible and will not do anything. In my view, I was highly disappointed, but sadly not surprised, that the company would not stand up and take responsibility for a few flowers worth about $10, retail, but dodged it by blaming deer. read more

I used to love the store by Kentlands, but it has changed a lot in recent years and I often drive to the Urbana store because the customer service is better and friendlier. My main concern is with the pricing. I purchased several plants at their labor day sale, except the sale prices were not in their system and I had to return to the store later to get the discount. A few weeks earlier, I purchased some herbs and their prices were also not in the system and the price the cashier was going to charge me was much more than that listed on the sign. There have been so many times that I have been charged a price for a plant which is different from that listed on the table where they are located. The pricing issues are so frequent that I don't think they are accidental. Also many of the shrubs do not have any price tag and you have to be careful when selecting a shrub because they are often very root bound. read more
