Stopped in to see this historic place!! There is a lot to see. The gift shop attendant was full of knowledge and the bartender was super friendly!! We had a drink out on their patio. It was so peaceful. We enjoyed the Potosi Golden Ale so we bought some to take home along with a couple other souvenirs. read more

Food was average at best, once it was heated properly. Two plates of Mac and Cheese were sent cold and had to be sent back to be microwaved. Chicken sandwich had a blob of Nashville honey sauce rather than being tossed. Ordered Cajun fries, but they weren't seasoned at all. The restaurant and patio have a great atmosphere, so its a shame that the food doesn't match. I'll probably come back for a beer, but I'll skip to deep fried appetizers. I love the ambiance and decor at this place. It is definitely a destination worth checking out. Be sure to ask about the history of the bar. Unfortunately the food was just average - it wasn't bad it just wasn't memorable. I'd still recommend everyone try it once. Maybe it was an off night for the kitchen. read more

We love Potosi Brewing Company! It is well worth the drive from Galena or Dubuque to get delicious beer, friendly service, and an awesome brewery museum! We discovered Potosi a few years ago and have returned several times for some of our favorites: delicious burgers, cheese curds, and other great food. As far as beers, Cave Ale, Snake Bite, and Tangerine IPA are just a few of our favorites. There are few breweries in the area where we actually get cans to-go, and Potosi is always one of them! The drive to Potosi is gorgeous since it is down in a rugged River cut town. The building is historic and has been beautifully renovated into both a brewery restaurant and interactive museum. We would recommend visiting both for the food/drink AND the family friendly museum! Furthermore, the staff are always welcoming and friendly, making the interpersonal interactions a wonderful part of the visit! And the prices are very reasonable. Make sure to add Potosi to your visit list, and be sure to come with enough time to eat, drink, and check out the beautiful building's museum! read more

Tried to make a reservation but only got answering machine. Then stopped by restaurant at 6:15 and was told it would be 15 min wait for table, that seemed reasonable. So sat at bar and ordered a beer. While waiting saw several groups which came after us provided tables in dining room. After 20 min asked about our table and finally sited shortly. Waited 25-30 minutes for waiter to stop at table but nothing. Left restaurant at 7:00 (45 minutes later) waiter never stopped at table. read more

We made the pilgrimage to Potosi on a cold and blustery late March Sunday. This place had been on my list of places to visit even before we moved back to Wisconsin. Not much in Potosi except the brewery and the associated businesses. I can see how in summer this place would be crowded with a nice outdoor patio off of the pub and the big event center across the street. We had a reservation for the one pm tour and it was full. The tour was a lot of fun mainly because our tour guide Jack? was a hoot and we could try as much beer as we wanted. Being off season we could linger in the bar before going out on the production floor (nothing running on the weekend). That part of the tour was OK - seen one brewery you've kinda seen em all. The museum was excellent. We really liked all of the history and the old memorabilia. We learned that there were hundreds of breweries in Wisconsin in the late 1800s - every small town had one. Much more than just an old beer can collection... Overall it was very entertaining and worth the drive. read more

If you are within an hour of Potosi, it is worth the drive. We got a flight of beer and then ordered a pint. The food is really good. We ordered cheese curds and bacon popcorn. Yup, bacon popcorn. I think instead of butter they drizzle bacon grease on the popcorn and bacon bits. Cheese curds were top five as well. Not too much breading and perfect amount of curd. We are going to try the popcorn at home. I ordered a burger with pulled pork and slaw and it was perfectly cooked to order. My Dad got the baked catfish which he said was really good and my father in law got his standard fried shrimp. He thought they were top five of all the fried shrimp he has ever had. Mother in law and my better half each got chicken sandwiches cooked to order. Good selection of items on the menu including vegetarian. Seriously, worth the drive! read more

I had checked out the menu online and was hoping for a half salami & cheese sandwich with a cup of beer cheese soup. Strike one was that it turned out to be about 90 degrees that day. I still would have gone for the cheese soup, however we were traveling with our dog so we hung out in the beer garden and learned that you can't order off the restaurant menu outside. They did have a grill set up, offering chicken, burgers, sausages and pork chops. Eventually we ordered a pork chop sandwich topped with caramelized onions, which was much better than I expected, and a good value at $6 with a bag of chips. Even if we had been able to order off the restaurant menu, we learned that they recently took the salami sandwich off the menu. First I tried the Good Old Potosi brew. Not quite my thing. Next I ordered an IPA and it was a great beer, but when I ordered a second one later, Snake Hollow IPA, it was a totally different beer, so I'm not quite sure what the first beer was. Delicious mystery beer, for sure. The museum on site is worth the $5 price, especially since you get a free small beer with your admission. TONS of Wisconsin beer history, and then some. read more

Great brewery with a lot of history in the middle of an unassuming city! The museum and cave was a pleasant surprise. The beer is really good with a lot of variety. The restoration of the building is beautiful with great stonework. We really enjoyed the museum. You can see things on the ground floor for free, and it is $5 for those twelve and over to tour the museum on the second and third floors - but that admission price gets you a 12 ounce beer or root beer. The root beer is delicious, by the way, and you can buy a growler of it. We had lunch, I had a burger, which was delicious and prepared perfectly, plus a lovely pretzel roll. I really enjoyed their ESB beer, which is apparently only available at the brew pub. Highly recommended for beer lovers. read more

"A long time ago, in a brewery far far away they brewed an IPA ..." They brew a lot of other things too, all of which taste mighty fine. Belgian Trippel, IPA, and a Czech Pilsner. Mmm mmm. Potosi brewing is both a brewing museum that covers many of the breweries that made Wisconsin beer history as well as a nice restaurant. They make an especially good pretzel. We also enoyed a pulled pork quesadilla - sounds weird but it tasted good. Do you remember Rahrs?, Adler Brau? People's? You will after you visit here. And don't go away empty handed, they brewed more for you to take with you. read more

First time here on our way home to Iowa. Wasn't sure on what beer we wanted and we Able to sample a few before deciding what we wanted. Irish farmhouse beer was amazing! The pretzel was really good, nice crust and super soft inside. Cheese curds were must try and did not disappoint. We were a party of 6 so it was a nice variety of food for everyone. We highly recommend the rueben. Also the bathrooms were very clean. Will definitely be coming back here again when we are in the area. read more

Neat place, great museum, good beer. We did the self guided brewery museum first. That's four floors worth with a couple of floors offering multiple rooms. Aside from the outstanding memorabilia, which touches on all US brewing as a whole, there's a great deal of history to be learned here. Brewing as a whole is widely displayed and described in detail. Part of the tour specifically deals with the history of the Potosi Brewery. I never realized how long the company had been in business and the cave was impressive to see. We weren't dinner-ready when we stopped in so we dug into a couple of app's instead. The pretzel bites and cheese curds flowed well with the two drafts I tried..Holiday Bock and Gandy Dancer. Bock's generally aren't my thing but their Holiday hit the spot. Great taste..light in volume. Gandy is their porter and it's decent, nothing over the top. Oh yeah..had to try their root beer for good measure. Good stuff! All in all we were very pleased with our visit. I made the annual pilgrimage to my mom's hometown of Tennyson, which is just right up the road from the Old Potosi Brewery. It never disappoints. The historic building has a lot of significance to the area and is now serving as the village's anchor, allowing it to not slip into obscurity like other Midwestern towns this size. The beer they originally served was not to dissimilar to carbonated Mississippi River water. This, along with changing trends in beer as well as the economics of the brewing industry was the reason PBC closed in the early sixties. The buildings and facilities fell into disrepair where they were almost demolished. They had sat idle & empty for decades until some visionary entrepreneurs rescued this treasure from the wrecking ball. The food is great, inexpensive, the beer is great and improving and it has a nice feeling of nostalgia without being garish. It is a museum after all so I guess that's the point. Our experience was pleasant. The chef came from the kitchen to tend to the floor. Apparently they weren't expecting a Badger tour bus pull up. He sold me on the Rueben as I am on the quest for the worlds best. He steered me right as it is the best #rueben I've had in a long time. Quite possibly the best ever! Great place to stop at when driving through Potosi. I did the self guided brewery tour and went through the rooms filled with memorabilia. Some stations had various buttons to press to hear more about their history, which I found to be very cool and informative. There's a gift shop room where you can buy beers to go and other items as souvenirs. One of my favorite non-Potosi souvenir item was an old beer can from the 70s-80s. They have a large barrel filled with various beer cans to choose from for free. I can't wait to turn mine into a planter. There was another area that had seating to dine in with a great view of their cave. This area was probably one of my favorites. Very very cool! I ordered a couple of appetizers, the cheese beer soup and jalapeno poppers. The beer cheese soup was delicious. I just had to try it, considering it's made in-house with Potosi beer. The jalapeno poppers were yummy as well, but rather than breaded they were wrapped in bacon. They have great seating at the bar. I must say, they have some of the biggest and comfiest bar stools I've ever had the pleasure of sitting on. Potosi actually makes one of my favorite beers, the Riverside Raddler. It's sooo good and I highly recommend it if you like fruity light beers with less hops. It's a grapefruit Hefeweizen style beer. Great place, great service! The live outdoor music was a great addition to the day. read more

Stopped for dinner after camping at nelson dewey. I had my pups with me and we got a patio seat outside. Food and beer was super good. Only down side is the flies a little much for the people i was with, im used to flie because i am half frog and didnt mind them. My dogs tried to eat them. If you find yourself anywhere near the southwestern corner of Wisconsin and have even a slight interest in microbrewery beer or brewing history, this place is a "must see". We came here expecting to make a quick stop for beer, but ended up spending several hours touring the National Brewing Museum and tasting Potosi beers. The lower level of the museum is free and gives the history of Potosi Brewing, which was a large regional brewery prior to its reincarnation as a microbrewery. The rest of the museum has all kinds of beer history, tons of historic cans/bottles and signs, and an amazing collection of videos of old beer commercials. If you are old enough to remember Schlitz, Blatz, Carling Black Label and the like, it'll bring back some memories. The brewery brews an impressive range of microbrewery beer. My favorite was the Hopsmith Imperial IPA. It's very hoppy, but with enough body to nicely tame the bitterness. If that's not your kind of beer, they have a lot of other choices, from light to dark, hoppy or not, and even some citrus, pumpkin, tangerine or coffee flavored brews, at least seasonally. read more

We were on our way to Balltown and then found out the restaurant we were going to was closed. (Note to everyone: with staffing issues, call restaurants you don't normally go to make sure they are open.) So I found this great find on Yelp. Only a few miles further but well worth the drive. The inside is amazing with beer signs and a beautiful bar. Lots of history here and if you get a chance, go through the brewery museum. I was pleasantly surprised and so happy we ended up here. Good variety of beers and a great menu. We started out with beer battered cheese curds. The best I think I've ever had. No frozen ones here, they were the real deal The rueben was fabulous. Tender lean chinks of corned beef with rye bread grilled to perfection. I was pleased that the bread did not get soggy throughout the meal. My pet peeve when it comes to ruebens. Sides included choice of salad, Mac n cheese, beer soup, sweet potato fries, curds, coke slaw etc. read more

Pretty decent brewery tucked away in a faraway rural corner of Wisconsin. It's about a 25 minute drive from Dubuque with nothing else really around, so this place gets a lot of locals. The "downtown" area of Potosi is quite odd, almost like something out of Deliverance, but once you walk into the brewery, that feeling goes away. Beer ahead. The brewery itself is a little kitschy in decor (they pride themselves on being a historical "landmark"), but again, just keep forging ahead to the bar. They've got a decent selection of brews - our favorite is the Snake Hallow - and some friendly staff. The food could use some serious work (app portions are ridiculously small and also not that tasty), but again, we came here for beer, so let's just focus on that. It's worth a trip if you're really into beer and you're in the area. If neither of those apply to you, don't go out of your way. read more

The National Brewing Museum is fantastic. There are three floors of things to see and even the building it's housed in is fascinating. There are televisions which play old commercials. I can't get the Hamm's song out of my head! There is a restaurant attached to the museum. We were told it would be a forty-five minute wait, but I don't think it was more than fifteen. When you walk in, there is a Plexiglas window on the floor showing a creek running under the building. I ordered the brisket melt for dinner. The description said "slivered onions" which makes me think of those tiny little onions that McDonald's uses on their burger. This had way, way more than that, so I just scraped them off. Unfortunately by doing that, I lost most of the tasty BBQ sauce. So, if you're not an onion fan, order this without! I also wish there was about double the meat. The saving grace was the side of cheese curds I got instead of fries. They were outstanding! They were beer battered and I could actually taste the beer. My husband got the Reuben and there was meat falling out of it. It was huge. He chose sweet potato fries and he said his meal was delicious. He also tried a flight sampler. I really liked the IPA. I thought it tasted like some really good grapefruit juice. I tried the tangerine IPA but that one was just too much - too sour - for me. I really enjoyed their root beer. Really great stuff! They have a great gift shop. We got a growler filled with The Good Old Days (or Good Old Times?) which was a pilsner. Super tasty. We got a gift box, so the growler (filled) with four pint glasses was $24! The glasses alone could have cost that. The root beer 4-packs were $3.95. Left with a couple of those, too. I had looked up tours on the internet before going and (as usual) I was trailing behind my husband when we got there. Instead of paying $12 per person to tour a brewery in 90+ degree heat, he paid $10 for us to tour the museum (self-guided) and we were given tickets for two free pints and one for a glass of root beer. This was a great place to visit in a beautiful part of the country. If you're in the Dubuque area, make a stop in Potosi! read more

From the start, it was a cursed visit. As soon as we walked in the door, a nice lady began a LONG speech about the museum. Frankly, we were hungry and just wanted to eat! So as soon as we could, we detached ourselves from her and headed to the restaurant. We were told that we would have to wait 10 minutes to sit down, which was strange, because we could see three tables in plain sight that were unoccupied. But maybe they had other people waiting, so no problem. Ten minutes later, no-one had claimed the empty tables, so the waiter or floor manager cheerfully steered us to one of the empty tables without explaining once why we had to wait 10 minutes for something that had been open the entire time. A little mismanagement, perhaps? When we placed our order, we were told that the restaurant was out of not one, not two, but three entree items on the menu! So, I just decided to keep it simple and order a cheese burger. The waitress asked me if I wanted to upgrade to the "Good Old Potosi Burger" which was more expensive. I told her no, just a simple cheeseburger would do. So when we finally get our meals, what do I see? A "Good Old Potosi" burger! Grrrrr.... There are good things. Two things, to be exact. 1) the holiday bock is tasty. 2) The building has been restored beautifully. Maybe we just stopped by on a bad day. My guess is that the place was under-staffed and unprepared for the holiday crowd. But the bottom line is that any good things were canceled by the poor customer service. The first time I went to the Potosi Brewing Company was during the 2009 Potosi Oktoberfest 100 bicycle ride. I was really impressed with this place, the restaurant is in the old Potosi Brewery, built on the natural springs (you can even see wild hops growing on the bluffs). And the fact that the National Brewery Museum is located here is fantastic! (Nice to see it in a small town, no big beer business pushing in) After the bike ride, I decided to come back for dinner. The food was wonderful, a traditional, hearty, home-grown menu that really compliments the fantastic traditional and new beer selection. When we were leaving, we met the mayor of Potosi, who told us about the inception and building of the PBC and museum. You can really feel the pride and heritage at the Potosi Brewing Co., this history behind this place is fascinating! I've gone back several time and have had a great dinning experience (two of which were for a UW-Platteville graduation dinner and for my birthday last September). I hope to be back soon. The museum is very interesting too, especially if you are a beer buff. The collection of memorabilia is quite impressive - a must-go if you are in the SW Wisconsin Mississippi Valley. Good ol' Potosi - the brew that began the legacy that is Potosi Brewing Company. I happened to try this beer amongst a few others when my boyfriend and I visited this brewery last week. It is crisp, fresh, and made only with 100% natural spring water (flow straight through Potosi!). The highlight of our tasting experience was a particularly expensive oatmeal stout that was made using whiskey, and it was honestly delicious. We've tried many beers of that nature, and that stout may have been the best one I've ever tasted. They have an area that you can walk through for free to learn everything you could want to know about Potosi brewing. There are a few interactive exhibits that guide you through the history behind their company and the hurdles they overcame during Prohibition. Overall, I would recommend making a trip to Potosi if you're in the area. They have a restaurant that is said to be one of the nicest in the area (as told to us by locals), but we did not eat there. The National Brewing Museum is also located in this building, so you can have two pretty fun experiences in one place. Keep it up, ol' Potosi! read more
