Dr. Meredith Hayden at Powell Animal Hospital: Our Happy Bulldog Walked In, But Never Came Home We are heartbroken and devastated to share our tragic experience with Dr. Meredith Hayden at Powell Animal Hospital (PAH) on August 20, 2025. Our beloved 10-year-old English Bulldog, Macy--our sweet companion who brought endless love into our lives--had a known history of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), including an elongated soft palate, as noted in her PAH records. We brought her in that day for mild symptoms--snoring and her bark sounding different. She was wagging her tail, full of energy and affection, when we walked into PAH with her. In our opinion, what followed was a tragic series of negligent decisions that shattered our world, leading to her rapid decline and the agonizing decision to euthanize her the next day at the University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center (UTVMC). Dr. Hayden recommended thoracic radiographs (chest x-rays) to check for possible aspiration pneumonia, which we agreed to. However, Macy was sedated with a cumulative dose of butorphanol (1.8 mL total, approximately 0.77 mg/kg) and dexmedetomidine (0.46 mL, 10 mcg/kg). According to veterinary guidelines from organizations like the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA), based on our research, brachycephalic dogs like Macy require careful airway management during sedation, including readiness for intubation to prevent respiratory complications. In our strongly held opinion, the sedation protocol used here was excessive and inappropriate for her breed and condition, as it exceeded typical recommended ranges (butorphanol usually 0.1-0.4 mg/kg) and contributed to severe respiratory depression without adequate safeguards being put in place. Post-sedation, Macy's condition deteriorated so quickly it felt like a nightmare unfolding before our eyes. She became oxygen-dependent, with saturation levels only stable at 94-97% on supplemental oxygen. We had to carry her out on a stretcher less than two hours after arriving--she walked in full of life but left in critical distress, her spirit fading in ways that haunt us still. At UTVMC, Macy received intensive care, including intubation, but despite the best efforts of the vets at UTVMC, her condition worsened and we made the agonizing decision to euthanize her the next day on August 21, 2025, holding her as she slipped away forever. We filed a formal complaint with the Tennessee Department of Health's Veterinary Board (Complaint No. 202504054) against Dr. Hayden. They opened a file and forwarded it for investigation. After investigation, they closed the case on November 20, 2025, stating it "did not rise to the level of public discipline. Therefore, the complaint has been closed, but the record will remain on file in this office." While no formal action was taken, we interpret this phrasing as potentially leaving room for some internal handling (notice the key wording of "did not rise to the level of public discipline," with the record on file for future reference. We also pursued a claim with Dr. Hayden's insurer, Steadfast Insurance Company (Claim No. 9410761945), but they denied liability (shockingly) on January 16, 2026, asserting the care was appropriate based on their review. We are writing this review because we feel compelled to warn other pet owners, especially those with brachycephalic breeds, in hopes of sparing them this unbearable grief. In our opinion, Macy's death was preventable and resulted from inadequate risk management during an unnecessary sedation, and negligence on the part of Dr. Meredith Hayden. Dr. Hayden can rebut this review and our opinions in it, but what is clearly not up for dispute is that we walked into PAH with a beautiful and sweet dog that was full of life on 8/20/25. Less than 2 hours later we carried her out on a stretcher, raced her down to UTVMC on oxygen in the back of our car, and she never recovered--leaving a void in our hearts that nothing can fill. If you are considering this vet for a high-risk pet, please think twice and seek a second opinion. Our hearts are broken, and we would not wish this soul-crushing pain on anyone. We brought our cat to the clinic to be spayed. She was there @ 730AM as requested. I was told that I would get a call from the vet who did her surgery to tell me how it went and set up a pickup time. By 330PM I was concerned that there had been no call. I called the clinic and was told by the receptionist that they were still doing surgery and that I would get a call. By 5PM still no call so we decided to just go to the clinic and pick her up. The vet had no explanation for not calling us. I really think that they forgot about her and that she would have been there all night if we hadn't shown up. Poor communication, little caring, rude receptionists. I will never go there again. I would give them one star at the most. Also, they asked for my rating and, if less than 5 stars, I was supposed to contact them. No wonder they have 5 star reviews only!!! read more

I live quite a distance away. But I needed a place who took care credit. My chihuahua got in a scuffle with a big dog or coyote and it picked him up and shook him. It was an oversight where my husband thought he was inside with me and I thought he was with husband outside. Thankfully my baby escaped and he ended up with abdomen hernia and needed surgery.I picked Powell because it was closest to Scott county and took care credit. 10 days later and he is doing amazing. He couldn't had better care. I'm so thankful he's still alive and with me. At first I didn't know what make of Dr Haaig, I'm a bit sensitive. He's just to the point. I'm like it's not my regular vet and I need my baby fixed. The office staff is very friendly. read more

Yesterday I picked up the remains of my precious baby from Powell Animal Hospital on Emory. My baby of 12 1/2 years was literally in a bag along side several others from the crematory, just laying on a bookshelf behind the front desk, among other items. The thing that hurt the most was the attitude of the staff member when she handed me my precious baby. She did not say anything at all. Not I'm sorry for your loss, kiss my butt, NOTHING! I realize that this is all in a vet's normal course of business, but there was NO COMPASSION shown. While this may have been just a fur baby to some, he was loved like one of my children! So hurt and disappointed. This clinic could learn about compassion, sympathy and empathy. I will be looking for another vet for my other fur babies. read more

I want to give an extremely honest review. I'm not the kind of person who would write a bad review for an establishment without just cause. For the past almost year we have had our two dogs under the care of Powell Animal Hospital and we really enjoyed it there. Dr. Haig, can come off kind of harsh, but I have always respected his no-fluff honesty. Dr. Peterson has been an absolute joy as well. Both our dogs Beau and Janie really like them. Our rapport with them is why I had my absolute trust in them to care for our dogs while I went on a family vacation. I dropped my pups (Beau and Janie) off with them on 3/9/18 and they would be staying with them until 3/19/18. I was extremely anxious about leaving them because it would be my first extended stay away from them, but I really trusted that they would be in good care with Powell Animal Hospital. I called almost every other day to check in on my pups, 3/10, 3/12, 3/14, 3/17. Each time I called I was assured that Beau and Jane were doing extremely well, being well behaved, and eating/drinking well. I felt so relieved and all of my anxieties were put to rest, until I picked them up. On March 19 I picked my dogs up. When I arrived they retrieved Beau first. He was still wet from his complimentary bath, looked tired, but was otherwise happy to see me. I loaded him in the car and came back inside to get Janie. The receptionist says to me "someone has spoken to you about Janie right? She's a medical discharge so you're going to have to speak with a vet before you leave." At this point I was completely confused and thought they must be thinking of the wrong dog. The look on all the staff's faces said it all. Nope. They were talking about my Janie. The kennel manager Tammy tried to explain to me that Janie had a "little incident" in 3/12/18 just two days into her stay, she scaled the ~8ft open top kennel and fell to the concrete below busting her lip, breaking many of front nails, but luckily no bones. I was ushered into an exam room, because I was clearly becoming visually upset (they still hadn't brought my Jane to me yet). Dr. Carr who I had never met prior to this is apparently who treated Jane. She spoke to me in the exam room and assured me that Jane was fine. I kept asking her why was I not called? Why wasn't this mentioned to me one of times that I called following? How was she able to scale a kennel without anyone noticing?? She was very dismissive of my concerns and apologized for the miscommunication. This was not a miscommunication. This was a lack of communication. When they finally brought my Jane out to me, apparently they had rushed through her nail trim (that or trimmed damaged nails that they shouldn't have) and her nails were bleeding pretty prolifically. I ended up covered in blood. Our vehicle seats were covered in blood. I got to my car and couldn't help but sob and hold my Janie. She relies on me to keep her safe. And I felt like I could trust Powell Animal Hospital, but I was wrong. I went back the next day to retrieve my dogs medical records and speak to Dr. Haig. He was floored at the situation as well and didn't understand why I wasn't told about the incident either. Not only did I call the DAY it happened (according to medical records I called just a couple hours after it happened), but again twice after and no one mentioned it AT ALL or mentioned her healing lip or how they changed her to a different kennel. NOTHING. Absolutely no communication. I at least felt assured after speaking with Dr. Haig that Janie received the treatment she should have. They didn't just let her fall and not pay her any mind. I am grateful for that. But it pains me that honesty, one of the qualities I appreciated the most from Dr. Haig and PAH, is not what I received during my dogs stay. Overall my feelings towards Powell Animal Hospital are just pure disappointment. I trusted them. And I feel deceived. I have 3 major issues with Powell Animal Hospital and how we were treated. 1. The incident with Janie falling from the top of an ~8ft kennel, busting her lip, damaging her nails, and the lack of communication of said incident to me. I should have been notified or it should have been reported to me when I called checking in. 2. The haphazard and harsh trimming of Janie's nails when we left. This was just horrific and completely uncalled for. Their vet techs need to be better. Do better. 3. The lack of customer service that they offer at PAH. All they said to me was sorry. All I got was shrugged shoulders and an "oops". Oh, and two Kong toys. I'm absolutely appalled and flabbergasted that they didn't even suggest a refund, even a partial one. Especially considering I paid $60/night for 10 nights (yes that's $600) to essentially put my dogs (at least Janie) through a very traumatic experience. PAH has lost my respect and I would suggest others to be weary. read more

I took my dog there for a visit, and the place seemed great. I scheduled him in for a grooming, little did I know my bundle of joy was cut on the stomach and behind the ear from the groomer. When I called the next day to let them know, I was given a response I never expected. The lady who answered the phone seemed to act like this was something that normally happened. She indicated normally the lady who grooms the pets lets the vet know she cuts them to be checked out. I advised that my husband picked him up and noticed the large gash on my small dog when he got into the truck, and no one proceeded to let him know this happened. It has been a while since this incident and he is still healing. We were offered a free vet visit / medication that we had to go back to complete. The vet seemed to blame the dog for getting cut, stated "you weren't still." This is a 4 month old puppy, he hasn't ever had a full groomer before and I thought he would be safe at the vet. I was clearly wrong. We were never offered our money back or anything besides the visit. I will never take my dog back here!! read more
