Really, what's not to like about this local longstanding hardware store. I try to make a conscious effort to purchase here, especially this time of year where I can buy my mulch, planting soils and gravel. The store is fun and has just about everything you would need in a pinch. Customer service is awesome, the young person helps load all these bags of product into my SUV and when I tried to give him a tip, he refused, saying they don't except tips. I took that the right way in terms of, it's what they do and it's built into Beaumont culture. Anyway, I love and support this local store whenever possible. read more

If I can support a locally owned hardware store over one of the big box stores, I like to do so. Do It Best Hardware has a few locations in the Portland area but they're nowhere as big as Home Depot, Lowes, Ace, etc. They're literally nowhere as big as well. These are pretty small stores, yet they somehow managed to fit in almost everything I've ever looked for. It does feel crowded, and the aisles are quite narrow, so perhaps that's their secret. The staff has been hit or miss in terms of how knowledgeable they are about projects, but they've all been very friendly. Street parking only. Dog friendly. read more

I come here often for various home improvement needs. I have purchased a few power tools (beware you cannot return once the box is opened). Today in particular I had a phenomenal experience with James -- I brought a tub spout diverter in which had been causing a leak. Despite not having the part I needed to actually fix my problem, James took the time out of his day to give me advice on how to remove the previous silicone sealant and give me a run down on the part. He directed me to George Morlan for the actual diverter I needed, but without his guidance and advice I would have had to spend hundreds more on a plumber. Instead, I learned something new, found another local business I really enjoyed going to, and got to experience the joy of fixing a problem myself. This is your old school type of neighborhood store where customer service still rules the day and the staff is there to help. Most have worked there for years and years. When I owned a house in Grant Park, this was my go-to hardware store whenever I needed an item and also needed to learn how to replace or fix something. In the large box stores, I wonder aimlessly. Here, I am greeted immediately and instantly guided to the item in need and instructed on what to do. Wow. Wish every store was like this! Doesn't matter if it's a small project like replacing a lock or a larger project like refinishing a piece of furniture, they have the answer and the tools. Now that I downsized to a condo, my house repair needs have been greatly reduced. But whenever I need something, I still go back to Beaumont Do It Best for the exceptional service and instruction. read more

Stopped in to purchase a pair work gloves. While there, requested to use a restroom and was told they "don't have public restrooms". I have shopped here a number of times while completing our home remodel. I am not the "public", I am a returning customer. I expect a business of this size to respect their customers and provide a restroom when needed. If the concern is their restroom being used by non-customers, a coded keypad could provide access for customers. In the future, as I did this day, I'll make the longer trip to Home Depot, where customers are respected rather than shop at this hardware store. Very poor customer service! read more

I have gone to Beaumont Hardware forever. It's one of those amazing smaller stores that somehow always has what you want. There is always someone at hand to help you find it, and a line to check out might mean, maybe one person, but probably not. Last weekend, I went to Target to get Christmas lights. Huge parking lot, full; Christmas stuff in the farthest corner of the immense store; largely bare shelves, lights no one else wanted, for good reason; long line of exhausted people slumped over their shopping carts trying to get in a little nap as they waited to check out. Today, we realized we needed a new tree stand. I decided to try Beaumont Hardware. They had three kinds, in different sizes. And, of course, lots of lovely lights. read more

When I moved to PDX 6 years ago, I went here every day for weeks. ... needed lots of stuff: hooks, garbage cans, a mop, those felt things for under furniture, light bulbs, furnace filters, etc, etc. It is a family owned business - so you feel good shopping here- they have it all and are very helpful when you need to ask a question or advice. Yes! A little hardware store that thrives and is not in fear of the big orange box taking over. Then again, in this neighborhood, there's nowhere to put one. I love the great customer service you can get at little stores like this and being that I have been here at this store almost every other day since moving up here, it is great to see smiling faces and assistance when needed. They are quick to help and quick to get you on your way. I need paint? They got it. I need electrical outlets? They got it. I need a spring? They got that too. Plumbing, gardening, door stops, eye hooks? Yes to it all. It's a small place but they pack it all in there. You're not going to find a lumber department, but you'll find everything else. I've been a loyal customer for 10+ years. Staff is always helpful and pleasant. There's a couple of Vets who really know their stuff. Occasionally, a very young employee will make multiple guesses at a solution; just say you don't know, but an A for effort. They carry out compost, top soil, etc. to your vehicle. Awesome bolts, screws, washer, etc. selection. Sometimes I'll overhear customers complain that they could get the same item for less at Home Depot. Do I really need to explain why this is so? I've not had too much experience with hardware stores, but the experience I've had is largely negative. I'd walk in to a massive store where seemingly only one person was working, they'd ignore me entirely, and I'd be lost and entirely clueless. Good times. That was not my experience yesterday! I walked in to the small, but sufficient stop that was equally full of staff and customers. An employee gave me the friendly 'watcha lookin' for?' Glance and I told him I needed drywall screws. He took me right back to where they were, talked through the options, showed me what was most popular and made sure they'd work for what I needed, and I was on my way. Given how full of customers (not to mention all the high reviews) this place was, it's clearly no secret that it's a great hardware store. It might be a bit out of my way, but it's certainly the only place I'll be using from here on out. read more

5 stars for the SUPER helpful staff - anyone I ask seems to know where to find exactly what I need. They are all willing to take me right to where I need, talk to me about options, and help me select the right item for the job. 3 stars for the organization - but that is probably subjective. I've never been in a well-organized hardware store, and this is no exception. Aisles go both parallel and perpendicular - some stuff is co-located, some stuff isn't. My failed building maintenance career thoroughly equipped me for screwing things into commercial drywall, no problem. The GF's lath and plaster, with a chimney behind part of it? Stupid Ikea shelves. The hardware store nearest Chez Wooga is thoroughly unimpressive, so we decided to hit up Beaumont on a Zipcar errand day and the park was knocked out of. Or something left a park to knock. Whatever, totally awesome experience. There's a small parking lot, super helpful since this part of Fremont is stupid with yuppies and strollers. I walked in, explained my sitch and was taken right to where I needed to go. A type of anchor was explained to me (some genius came up with that mofo) and when I said I'd need a masonry bit to go with my concrete screw I was told they usually include one in the boxes and if he could find one he'd give it to me. I have a free masonry bit now. I have no idea what I'll do with it once this stupid shelf is up, tho. Maybe I'll take it back so someone else can use it. Rather: two, and Bucky the White had that obesity gene we've all read about, for instance in Parade Magazine or Breast Feeding Plus magazine. He was spry but a little chunky, relative to Rusty the Brown, and I wondered if this might provide an important basis of an experiment, affording me direct experience with a health issue that's top-of-mind. With Rusty as a control group, I'd fed both a large quantity of sweets, and eventually Bucky succumbed to obesity. The experiment lasted several years, and when Bucky passed he was huge. I had to cut the cage open to get his stiff corpse out of Rusty's way. This is where the good people at Do-It-Best come in. I arrived, grief-stricken, and they gently steered me to bolt cutters and a gardening spade. They were very kind. My ex (again: one of them) asked that I bury Bucky, and I remember it was an Indian summer, 1997. While she sobbed behind me I dug a shaft into the baked earth, and she choked back tears about how "it always happens in threes." For historical context; just that week Princes Diana and Mother Theresa had also passed away. It was very sad, and she was correct. These tragedies always happen in threes. Outstanding Service - why places like this still exist. I just left this hardware store with exactly what I needed. It wasn't a big deal, but that made it an even bigger deal for me. Today's experience really served to punctuate the great service I always get at this store. I just needed a bolt. The younger, taller guy that works there - sorry, didn't get his name - helped me find what I was looking for. BUT everything they had was either too long or too short for my application - and I don't own a vise, a saw guide and a hacksaw - SO he cut a bolt down for me to my exact specifications (and cleaned up the threads). Mind you, this was a $0.47 sale. But that wasn't a problem, he sent me home with the item I needed. Like I said, I've always gotten good service here, and I could probably tell some tales about other purchases that might be more impressive - like the US made shovel I bought there back in 2007 that I've used and abused that's no worse for the wear - but if you're going to go out of your way to make me happy on a $0.47 sale, I have to give you a shout on Yelp! I was lucky enough to be in the neighborhood, driving by this store, complaining about my broken fan in my trunk when I noticed the sign "hardware" and skidded to the side of the road (well, without the skidding). Soooo glad I pulled over. 1. They fixed it (although I was not sure it was fixable) 2. For much less than I expected (I had just been debating "should I toss this broken p.o.s. or pay the big bucks to fix it because I love it more than people should love things") 3. Within about an hour (I was still a couple blocks away) 4. With a smile and sympathy for my love of my 1980s appliance (which is, apparently, par for the course, because when I brought some treats back to thank the man, I was told that people always bring him goodies) Wow, love at first repair. read more

Though I'm a fan of local stores in my neighborhood, this hardware store typically always lacks what I need. When I have a home project (where you end up typically making at least 2-3 trips to the hardware) I always come here first because it's about a mile away from my home. The past few projects I've done, I've always leave here irritated because some of the staff here don't know what they are talking about or maybe I'm the one who can't explain what I need (probably the latter). 80% of the time, I end up having to make a mad angry dash over to Home Depot to get what I need. This last time I was at Do it Best, I actually found a staffer that was REALLY helpful. I brought in my cartridge for my bath faucet, she took the time to clean it with a dental pick, made some recommendations for next steps for my project and even gave some advice to try some cheaper things before I end up just replacing my whole cartridge. After a couple of tries and watching some YouTube videos, I saved myself a plumber trip and the fix only cost me $35 with my Chinook Book coupon. I'll for sure come back to Do it Best again, but I'm pretty sure out of pure laziness and hopefulness, I would come back anyway because it's in close proximity. At least the next time my hope will be much higher! read more

I'm always working on some kind of project so in turn I goto lots of different hardware stores and this is the very best DO It Best Hardwear I have been to, and ive gone to lots of them. They have an okay to moderate selection of items for being in a small space. However what really sets them apart from other places would be the staff, they really know what they are talking about so this would be a good stop for someone out of there comfort zone I think and if they don't sell what you need they will always suggest a few places you can go to find what you need. read more

When I arrived the person I spoke with had just left to lunch, and no one could find the specific part they said they had on the phone. The employees there offered no help, and one tried to shift blame to the fact that the part I needed was hard to find. Thanks. Their companies were a lot like "the local hardware store." They knew how to talk to customers, work hard to find the best products at the best prices, how to act with integrity and nurture customer relationships. My dad took great care of his employees and I grew up knowing he was a respected businessman -not for his power, but for his honesty, hard work, and kindness. You will encounter all of these attributes at Beaumont Hardware and experience the great feeling of supporting a local business. They have a great variety of products and never run low on helpful advice. Sometimes I just hang out in the fasteners department and reminisce.
