Came here with B and J. B and I shared the Dive Bomb Dark Ale and the Hop juice. The Hop juice was nice, fruity and light. It was not hoppy and not bitter. Dark ale was very bitter but it was still good. The reason why we came here was all because of Takenaka. Yes they have partnered with food trucks in the area and the food truck would drop by and operate on site at a specific time. Usually on weekends. They only have very few limited patio seats and nothing else. This craft brewery is super small and on top, parking on site is limited. Well there are free streets parking. read more

After lunch, we decided to check out a brewery that we haven't been to yet: Powell Brewery. We dropped in on a holiday Monday (around 2:30pm). It wasn't too busy when we first arrived but more people came through. There's room for 23 people. We've been to a lot of breweries in town; this one had the strangest playlist. They had 6 beers on tap along with a cider (bottle only). There was also some merchandise (posters, beer jelly, growlers and t-shirts) and a small food menu; hilarious, that there's a microwave hot food ($10.00) option. Happy hour deals seemed solid (only valid from Monday to Thursday). - Flight ($7.00) - we went with the blackberry belle berliner style ale, old jalopy pale ale, ode to citra pale ale and dive bomb dark ale. Our favourite was the blackberry ale but the rest were ordinary. - La Belle ($10.99) - gin & wine barrel aged sour farmhouse ale. This is a limited edition bottle. According to the worker, it's a sour for "sour connoisseurs". It's a small but cool, laid back spot to have a few drinks. One of the cheapest breweries to grab a pint. read more

Looks like they've finally upgraded to a newer venue, with actual seats. This place was once located a few blocks away, but it was basically just a brewing area with no tasting room. Just like Mark H. says, gotta drink 'em all, like Pokemon. Parking is available in the small lot out front. There are also spots in the side streets after business hours, but be sure to park on the same side of Powell. The nearest crosswalk is a block away, and this street gets awfully busy. I haven't played street Frogger like this in years. As the place is new, everything is nice and shiny. There are a couple of couches for those waiting for a growler refill, and bar seating (maybe 24 seats) for those wishing to try a paddle of 4. The room is mostly painted drywall and plyood, which makes it feel like someone's cabin at a ski resort. Flights are a bit more than nearby P49 at $6 apiece. As of the time of writing, there are 8 types of beer, so one can wipe out the inventory in 2 paddles. One nice thing about the menu is that it lists the bitterness (IBU) as well as alcoholic volume, which is nice for those who aren't as adventurous. One thing that stuck out is that the brews here are centred at 5-9% alcohol. Nothing weak, but nothing too strong either. Another thing to keep in mind, if some of your friends can't handle too much of a liver beating. Having tried all of them, things here are a bit more on the hoppier side. Ales make up the majority of the selection. There wasn't really anything I didn't like. Can't really go wrong with this place. read more

Powell brewery is a small, quaint, "no-nonsense" (in a good way) type place. I visited on a Sunday night with 3 friends and I quite liked how it had a "calm" vibe inside so we could chill and talk and not have to yell over each other. I think the warm wood decor was also a nice touch. We shared 2 flights ($6 for 4 tasters which I think is a very reasonable price). I liked how they had snack options for super cheap (a bowl of rice crackers for $2 or pepperoni sticks). Always nice to have something to much on amiryyte?? Sure they're not the most *premium* of food snacks... but it's nice to have the option there if you so choose. PB isn't that convenient to get to unless you're driving... so be warned its best to have a DD! If you're like me and obsessed with convenient-parking-only, you will be happy about the ~8 spots out front. So great. Overall I really liked this place and would come again with a small group. I think it would be cool to bring a game to play next time like Uno or Monopoly deal. Cool place to pass the time and chill :) read more

This brewery is awesome! The ambiance is great - well lit, gorgeous wood furnishings and a really cozy feel. I like that we can also look at the brewing area through the large glass window at the back. It's an added bonus that this place is dog friendly too. The service was really awesome - the young guy behind the counter helped me pick out 4 beers for my flight based on my feedback, and he hit it out of the park. He even came by later to see how I liked it, which was really appreciated. Plus, the beer was so good! I'll definitely be coming back. read more

Keeping up with all the new craft breweries opening in town is like Pokemon. Gotta drink them all. I was searching for breweries on the Yelp app and noticed this new listing with no reviews. They just opened in this new space on Sept 24. Walking in, it kind of felt like someone's really cool dad's mancave with retro couch and furniture and wooden bar and tables. The observatory type window into the operations is entertaining. Flights of 4 are $6 including tax which doesn't win on value (P49 remains king), but really enjoyed the Hopdemonium IPA followed by Ode to Citra Pale Ale the most. Growler fills are $11.50 except high ABV ones (IPAs) are $13. Staff are cool. I'll be back. read more

With all the new craft breweries and burgeoning beer culture exploding, Powell Street has been a reliable staple on the Eastside since 2012. The former nano-brewery's relatively new location (originally located four blocks east) has a vintage charm to it with the plain wood finishes and basement feel. As for the beer, I did my best to try most of the bunch. The Ode to Citra Pale Ale was quite crisp and delightful in its fine taste. You'll most likely be familiar with the award-winning Old Jalopy Pale Ale as a tasty, no-nonsense drinking pale ale with abundant citrus and floral notes. The Hodemonium IPA has a nice, subtle bite to it and isn't too hoppy with its robust flavour. The White IPA (aka WIPA) was very good, easy drinking, and crisp. It had a very subtle hop to it and I really enjoyed its golden quality. The Azacca Ale was light, refreshing, very easy drinking, and smooth, if a little slight. I was curious to try the Double IPA and was pleasantly surprised by the refreshing hoppiness to it. I really dig Powell Street's no-nonsense line up of basic yet well-made beers from a very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Also, I enjoy the old school Duff Beer/Moe's Tavern style mugs. read more

Came to Powell st with my fiancee.. started out our day of brew hopping. This place has a small lot. 8-10 cars it can accomodate. The location is really clean. Nice set up. Can accomodate big parties. We came in at about 1230ish and noticed that it was empty. We were greeted by 2 gentlemen inside... both seemed friendly.. but when we asked questions... we got short answers and felt like they ddnt want to explain anything further. We got our flights $7 for any 4.. and of the 4.. the only one that was a treat was their ipa.. hopdemonium..I think it was called. There was lots of foot traffic filling growlers but no one really hanging out there. Wonder why.. I'd go back to get growler fills.. but not hangout. Thanks powell. read more

This was our first trip to their new location, and I gotta say these guys are doing some great things with beer! I'm glad they moved to a larger location, as the last place - though cute - left a lot to be desired in terms of seating availability. Now there's plenty of seating (table sharing is encouraged during busy times), and a big window through which to watch their brewery operations. The beer is still good, and they will give you a little taster to try before you commit to a whole pint. This is definitely on our "must do" brewery list when we're in this part of town! read more

I came here with a big group and even though PSCB is one of the larger craft breweries it was still hard to get us all in there. The flights were priced well at $7 and the pepperoni sticks were the cheapest of any place I've been to. Selection was fairly good although I found that each individual beer had a lot in common with the one I had tried before. Staff were very attentive, polite and the Amarillo Sour beer was one of the better sours I've had (certainly better than Main Street's sour). Because of its proximity to all other breweries, this is certainly worth a stop on your crawl nights. read more

My wife and I popped in to PSCB to sample a few beers yesterday, and we ordered four tasters each. The gentleman behind the bar recommended the Grisette which my wife duly ordered. She didn't like it so she inquired as to whether she could try something else instead, and the gentleman refused. Now there was nothing wrong with the Grisette, but the bartender recommended it and my wife didn't like it. This is a brewery - is it really worth quibbling over four ounces of beer? Plus we tipped enough to pay for another whole taster! Which reminds me - never tip before you leave the establishment. Next time we'll go up to Parallel 49 instead, it's super cheap and despite the crappy decor, it always has a great atmosphere. read more

As a master carpenter I'm truly offended my the lack of care and effort of the fit and finish of the place, I'm REALLY hoping you were working with a chairty that employs blind carpenters, thats the only reason i can come up with in my mind for the quality of workmanship. i hope the lack of care dose not spill over into the sterilization of the vats and brewing equipment. BUT after quite a few good sessions in there I can say for a fact their beer is exceptional, very clean, distinct, and honest, good rotating tap selection. read more

I can't entirely decide how I feel about this place, but overall I liked it. The tap room has essences of clean design meets hipster chic meets grandma's living room. The immediate tap area and bottle fridge is filled with a mix of antique furnishings and what I can only assume to be local artists art hanging on the newish drywall or wood covered walls. The other side of the room is more standard in modern styling and filled with high top tables and bar stools to enjoy your brews, and then a small peakaboo window into the brewery along the back. The flights were some of the better priced ones during my trip, coming in at only $7 for 4 x 5oz pours. I'm happy to say the beers were pretty tasty as well. I want to first shout out their Contradiction Sour. My experience throughout various tasting stops was that no one was willing to make a bold sour. Everything seemed so tame and subdued, but Powell came correct with some good sour and funky flavours coming to the table. Beyond that sour, my other favourite was the Ode to Citra Pale Ale. Citra hops have really come to the forefront of juicey pale ales and Powell has done a fine job on this beer. I was especially happy to grab a 650ml bottle to go for less than $6 as well. In fact, I wish more Vancouver tap rooms would embrace the 650ml bottle distribution and focus less on the growlers, but that's a whole other regionalized issue. In the end, I definitely think this place is worth a stop, and found it to be a happy conclusion to Day 1 of my various beer tourings. read more

I felt a little bad for not spending as much time over the holidays before leaving for the Island with him (alone time), therefore, I decided to throw a cute little date night with him and we did a sampler tasting at this Brewery together. Of course I don't drink, therefore, he did most of the tasting. I did have a finger lick of each and I am more into the Light IPA. The place is small and seating is limited. I laughed when I saw the sign which read "Sharing Your Table Is Awesome." It is kinda sad when you have to tell Vancouverits that it is okay to share, however, this is just us. In Portland you don't even have to ask. 9 out of 10 times you just join someone's table if there are seats available. Sad we have to remind Vancouver to be social, however, the sign was still funny none the less. The guy I am dating decided to pick a table with a view of the actual brewery. It was like whale watching. We got excited when we say a hipster walk in the brewery doing something. Like I said, it's like whale watching. The people running the brewery (til) were super friendly and sweet. I chatted with them for a good 5 minutes when my mom went to use the can. They do have some snacks, very being the magic word. The snacks are okay but more like light bits to fill and absorb the beer. Prices were very reasonable. The samplers were $6 each. We came here at around 2 pm-ish, however, it got busy really really quickly. We had a good brief conversation with the couple next to us as to when it is appropriate to take down your Christmas lights. read more

Oh, right, this is a review of a brewery. So I suppose I should mention the beer. Even if we threw out everything above, this would still be a five-star review based on the beer alone. If it was a filthy hovel with no redeeming features and they served this beer, I'd still only be able to go down to 4 1/2 stars. So go, try all their beers and find your favorites! On a craft brewery tour, PSCB was our 3rd stop. The tasting room is small with very limited seating. The food options are also very limited. But one is here for the beers and PSCB does have several great beers and of course the growler fill option. I am a double/imperial IPA guy and enjoyed both the OPDEMONIUM IPA (8% and 88 IBU) and the RIGHT KIND OF CRAZY DOUBLE IPA (9% and 150 IBU) though even I found the latter a wee bit too hoppy...my fault as I was aware it was a 150 IBU. read more

I love this place. The beer is great, the tasting room is awesome, and the staff are friendly. I usually have the stout and its one of my all time favourites. My partner loves their saison. If you are looking for an exciting venue with stunning decor, this is not the place for you. However, if you are looking for excellent beer, do not hesitate to get over here. We upwards of a dozen breweries while visiting Vancouver, and this spot had the best lineup, top to bottom. That's saying something, too, because there is some fantastic beer being brewed in Vancouver. The Pilsner and smoked lager were true standouts, especially considering how difficult those can be to get right. Their test beer was an oat APA that quickly quelled my skepticism--about my favorite of the bunch. All the beers were well thought out and well crafted and presented without an ounce of pretention. The number of growler fills we witnessed during our short visit is a testament to their quality. read more

The new taproom is a nice upgrade over the previous location. The previous room was charming, but really only a couple of stools. The new room has a nice modern feel with a bunch of share tables. I generally drink the Hopdemonium IPA and Citra Pale Ale and enjoy the White IPA whenever it comes around. Every time I've been, there's a 5-10 person lineup out the door so it can get fairly busy. I believe the Hopdemonium is worth the wait though. Will definitely keep coming back for more! read more

I just came from Powell Street today and was beyond disappointed by the poor customer service. A group of seven of us went for a birthday beer tour. A few of us were not drinking and doing the designated driver thing. It was obvious from early on that they were not happy we weren't all ordering beer. Then one of my friends, who has not been sleeping well as she's been caring for her father in hospital closed her eyes while sitting on the couch. The manager came over and rudely told us she had to wake up or leave. We explained that she was not drinking, had not passed out, as he was insinuating. Even after explaining the situation of her sleep deprivation he continued to say that she could not close her eyes in his establishment. Meanwhile, there had been a rowdy group in earlier who were singing, dancing and causing more of a disturbance for other customers than my friend sitting quietly on the couch with her eyes closed. I understand and respect that he doesn't want drunk people passing out in his tasting room, but he could have handled this situation with a lot more respect and humanity, instead of acting rudely based on assumptions. Had he come over to check that she was ok, approached the situation with care and concern as opposed to aggression, it would have been quickly resolved. Instead my friend was offended and we left without finishing our drinks as we felt unwelcome. We will not be returning and will not be sharing positive feedback to anyone in our personal and professional circles. read more

I love their dark wheat beer. Looks like a porter but tastes and feels like a light summer wheat beer. They seem to have more beer varieties compared to others and they're happy to let you try them all before filling your growler. Their sour is also quite unique. It's nice that they have a few parking spots out front. Only thing I didn't like is the furniture/interior design. But I'm only there to fill-up and go. read more
