A smaller version of the downtown store. It is still a good sized bookstore. It's located in the mall but with an exterior entrance. It's easy to get in/out of and there's plenty of parking. It's not the same experience as the downtown store, obviously, but it's a great bookstore all the same. One cool thing I noticed was that you can demo board games here. There are tables set up for you to try out games before you buy them. This is really priceless because how many times have you wished you could check out a game before committing to buying it? read more

If I learn about a new book I go to Powell's site to see if there's a copy at the Cedar Hills location because you can easily park here, run in and grab your book. Here's the problem: none of the books I'm looking for are ever here. They might be downtown but downtown isn't convenient. That said, a lot of the things I want are at the location called Local Warehouse. Is it that hard to stock one copy of Flaubert's Salammbô at one of the three stores? Maybe it's just my taste and I'm irked that Burnside is the only location with a copy of Andrey Platonov's Chevengur while Local Warehouse has twenty copies. Ew buoy. read more

Selling your used books at Powell's in Cedar Hills: Totally disorganized, the way they do things, ELON MUSK could have come up with this idea. Get some employees fired, open the counter only three days a week with the result that customers have to wait one or two hours in line, while a slow employee checks your used books. They tell you to go and look around in the store while the slow employee checks the books. Once the books are checked it is not uncommon that the customer did not return yet to quickly check out so the line can move on without delay. Then the employee calls though the PA system that is mumbled and no one understands what he's saying that "Mark" needs to come back to the counter (the example I observed). This was repeated three times and after about 10+ minutes "Mark" finally showed up. In the meantime 20 people waited in line and the employee waited for those 10+ minutes for "Mark", just standing there doing nothing. Customers have to stand, there is not a line of seats for people holding books, I wish the incompetent person who came up with this system would have to stand there for two hours with a box of box in his/her hands. If there is no response to this review below then Powell's just don't care, but many people in this long line perhaps would like to have an explanation of Powell's insane system. read more

This is a smaller version of the Powell's city of books. I like to call these stores *seeds*. This book seed is totally worth the stop. They still have tons of books, and seating areas that were comfortably full of people enjoying all reading materials. I talked to three associates, they were all very friendly and as helpful as possible, and while they didn't happen to have the book I was looking for, they were all very kind with their time in trying to help me. They have games, books, magazines, gifts, and wearables. It's a great stop I'd highly recommend. read more

Half a year later my kid bought this price last week we found out it's 15.99 book that sell NEW on amazon for $7.50 Congrats for a thousand percent profit you made from locals. Oh, let me count the ways: --it's serene; the reading area with natural light, plants and wooden Adirondack chairs is one of the best reading spaces I've discovered in a bookstore; I can easily spend an hour in this space reading newly purchased books or lingering over which book--well, books--to buy --ease of parking --ease of moving around the store without the crowd of the downtown location --ease of talking to employees for assistance --ease of paying --ease of selling back books --awesome puzzles, gift ideas that are easy to find Mostly I like the space and pace of Powell's. I love bookstores! If I could, I would work in a bookstore! I love the feel of books, I could never convert over to a kindle or nook! The Powell's in Beaverton is not close to being as big and quirky as the the Powell's on Burnside, but in some ways, I love the Beaverton Powell's a little bit more! Maybe it's because it's closer to my home in the 'burbs! Maybe it's because the parking is so much more convenient! Maybe it's because I've gotten to see a few of my favorite authors upclose and personal! I've gotten to see Christopher Moore, Audrey Niffenegger and Patricia Cornwell in Beaverton, OR of all places! Their author signings are always well organized, efficient, well run and just plain fun! The most recent signing I went to, was this past Monday. I found out through my Patricia Cornwell facebook fan page, that Patricia was actually in Portland. I had to find out if it was Portland OR or Portland ME...once I figured out it was definitely Portland OR...I had to do a bit of detective work to see if she was doing a booksigning...and yes, she was! I got to Powell's shortly after 5 to get a ticket for place in line for booksigning. I secured a great seat. After that, I wandered around the bookstore, till it was almost time for Patricia to make her appearance and speak. All the authors that I have seen here, are really engaging and enjoyable to listen to. read more

I love Powells and have been going there regularly for over 30 years. They used to be over by Washington Square for many years (and of course the downtown store on Burnside) until they tore that little mall down. If they don't have the book you want in one of their locations it probably doesn't exists. Great online search tools to help find what you are looking for. I prefer Powells to the other chain bookstores because Powells is a local business. The staff is always great. Very comfortable reading areas and they sometimes have interesting guest speakers. read more

Oh Powell's! Books upon books, upon more books! Venturing into Powell's and it has something for everyone. Smaller than the original location, this one ain't too shabby! Lots of info help from the staff or use one of the computers to look up items. A colorful children's area and nicely organized as well as clearly marked aisles help a lot. The magazine section is nice and can for the most part find what I am looking for. My favorite part is all the different nick nacks, as well as cards, stationary, toys there is to just browse or purchase. I mainly use Powell's as a resource to see what books are out and on sale, then purchase them or also to see what guests they have coming in to speak as well. One thing is that they do not seem to post or note if books are sold out and they have no stock available as I have had to ask about two different times. Great destination in Portland. I could easily spend several days here. Great deals and selection of new and used books. It's always at the top of my list of things to do when I'm in Portland. Kid needed a book for school. I could have used Amazon and had it next day (minus the driving and COVID risk), but I figured hey, I should order from Powell's. So I do. Then I see they're open only open 5 days a week. Fine -- I'll wait until they open on Wednesday and go pick it up. I arrive an hour after opening. Is the order fulfilled? Nope. Will they run and grab me a copy? Nope -- I have to go get it myself. The associates at Cedar Hills are vaguely less rude than at Burnside, but I'm still not in a hurry to return. read more

Mini compared to the flagship downtown but still a great place to have in Beaverton. You can find anything you want here and there are plenty of spaces to sit and read. Powell's is a must when you come and visit Portland. I've been here a few times now and can sort of make my way around without getting lost (there are a tremendous amount of books!) . There are books for just about anything. For example, a friend mine is really into manga and was blown away by the huge selection of books available. It put every other bookstore to shame with their selection. I find that the selection of books changes each time I visit as there are both new and used books available. It's very easy to unwind and spend a lot of time in this store. If you love to read, you must visit Powell's City of Books! read more

Even though this is the Cedar Mill location and not as large as the Downtown location, I feel that this Powell's does a good job of emulating the same kind of atmosphere as it's more famous location. The store is organized in much the same way, with plenty of racks and options for books, and I was able to find a decent amount of for sale books that were still in good condition. There is also a quiet reading area in the center of the store that is usually occupied by people sleeping, but could be used more effectively as a reading area. The children's area is also kid- friendly, and there is also a good assortment of children's books. Overall, the staff were also very helpful and knowledgeable about locations of things, and I was able to quickly find what I was looking for when I asked. A nice little place to go if you don't want to fight the crowd at the Downtown location, but this one is definitely just not as iconic as the other store. read more

I've been a patron of Powell's for well over 30 years, and have traded books dozens of times. Employees are usually delightful, in all the locations. But I am now doubtful to return to Beaverton's location. The woman "helping" me at the sell books counter was so unbelievably rude and curt to me the entire transaction yesterday. It was so extreme to the point I imagine she thought it was actually a requirement in her job description. I'm not a "snowflake" by any means, but I feel management should be aware they've got someone in the buying area that seems to pride themselves in trying to make CUSTOMERS, the reason YOU have a JOB, feel bad. Maybe something about that should be in their job description. read more

Don't sell your books at this location. As another reviewer has mentioned, there is one young woman in particular who is extremely rude and dismissive, acts like your books are nothing special (check the store shelves, Miss -- these are great), and gives very low credit. I brought in excellent literature hardcovers (Everyman's, Modern Library, LOA, etc.), none of which they had on hand before I walked in the door. Similar copies of other titles by the same authors (Mann, Nabokov, Kafka, Melville) were priced at $12-$15 or even more. The sad thing is that I was trying to have this be a win-win for both me and my hometown bookstore -- but now find myself not wanting to go back. The Burnside location seems to have better buyers and a better vibe, at least the last time I was there. read more

Powell's is one of the best things about living in the Beav. I could easily spend mid-three figures there every time. In case you have never been here, imagine a bookstore the size of a Costco. The pricing is fair--not cheap, but fair enough, and I will gladly pay it to keep this institution close to hand. Employees are universally helpful and intelligent. The selection of books is just amazing; my knees would wear out long before I were to finish a deep dive into their stock. Baskets are convenient, and the variety is enormous. As you'd expect from readers, the other customers tend to be very polite. You'd never confuse this with Fred's or Wallyworld from a clientele standpoint. I don't know what's going to happen to the little mall it's in, which seems like a kind of forlorn place, but given that new businesses have moved in I don't think it will suffer the fate of Bugatti's. It better not. I will be a Powell's customer as long as I can get to the store. read more

This location is a smaller location than the original bookstore in the Pearl District, but it's still quite amazing! Located in Cedar Hill shopping center, there is plenty of parking spots. There are two ways to enter the bookstore, one in the outside and also inside the mini mall. Powell's not only have tons of books but also lots of gifts (socks, mugs, board games, etc). While this branch is not anywhere close to as big as the one downtown, usually that is a good thing, I mean most places this would still be the biggest bookstore in town. All that said they are big enough to almost always have what i want. That is why I say it is usually a good thing. Big enough to have what I want without having to run all over the downtown site... though that can be a good thing to...sigh. I really like them both for different reasons. This one is "nicer" and has more comfortable chairs. Both stores have staff that remind me of librarians, serious but helpful. Its located in Cedar Hills Crossing so if you get hungry lots of restaurants around but no coffee shop inside. Also lots of free parking, See what I mean how do you pick a favorite? Oh they seem to have lots of Author Readings here though maybe its just there more open layout so I see them. read more

I have been to the main Powell's Books downtown location innumerable times. It is my favorite bookstore in the United States. This location in Beaverton is not anywhere as large as the downtown location but it is still a solid bookstore. They did not have several of the books I wanted at this location but they did have them at the downtown location and could get them in a few days. I decided I would just go downtown and pick them up myself since I was going to be in the area. I was a bit frustrated that there were multiple copies of certain books at the main location but not one at this one. It wasn't just for one book but for three books I wanted. But I went to the downtown location and got them. The staff here were very helpful and were more than happy to help. There also is a map of the store and it's set up which can also help you to find your way around. Checkout has always been faster here than at the main location but that is because there are fewer customers here. If you're in the area and want to kill a few hours this place is great and you don't need to worry about parking since there are plenty of places to park. read more

I still remember a few years back when I was living in Sellwood and drove to Tigard to Powell's only to find a sign on the very closed doors that the store had moved to Beaverton. Who the heck lives there? Well, I do now.Almost. Bethany. Some people say its the same, although we cling to our Portland address because, well, we can. Having a Powell's ten minutes from my house makes everything better. I love Powell's. The parking was a little tough today but we vultured and scored a spot. Then Princess and I spent two very happy hours spending her Dad's visa gift card that someone gave him as a work bonus.When I told him where we were going he handed it over. I have a new strategy, I load up my Amazon wishlist on my phone and then we go looking in the stacks for the books we want, lots of which we found used. We emerged two hours later with two big bags of enough books to keep both of us happy for at least the next couple months. Hit Black Rock on the way home for caffeine (me) and a snickerdoodle (her) and now we are happily ensconsed on the couch with our reading materials while soup bubbles on the stove. My only glitch in today's plan? The stupid sun is out,wtf???!!! The staff at this Powell's are always kind and helpful, it was easy to find a place to sit, there are baskets placed strategically around the store in case your arms get full (ours always do), and they have great gifty stuff besides books.Oh, make sure you check the shelves for yellow stickers on the covers, those are sale books and sometimes they are waaay on sale. We got two $8 youth books today for $2.99 each.Sweet! The whole sun thing? Well it is Oregon. Go figure. Sunny or not, a perfectly lovely afternoon for me and my favorite little reader. read more

Powell's in Portland is a destination. It never gets old winding your way through the color coded rooms and getting lost in the labyrinthian building on Burnside. But, if you just need to, you know, buy books, this suburban location is swell. On my list, were a year's worth of American classics for my teens' 9th Grade English and AP English courses. And it was great that the Literature section stocked both new and used items for each book on the list. Unfortunately, there are no student discounts, but I felt the books were all in good condition and reasonably priced. This Beaverton store is large in comparison to your average local bookstore and it is airy and light. The staff was also helpful pointing me in the right direction. read more

I have a confession... I'm a book addict. I can buy children's books, young adult, adult...everything. If I walk out of a store with a book in my bag, I am generally a happy girl. This Powell's is the "baby sister" to the one on Burnside. Tucked away in a mall that has definitely seen better times, this Powell's still has all the charm of the bigger store. Oh, another note... I am an out of towner... don't hate me if I mess up details. This store only has one level but uses the room it has to it's full advantage. Inside is a book lover's dream. What seems like every book you could possibly want from art books to YA to gardening to mysteries... it has it all. I only walked around the store 2 times but managed to confine myself to a $50 limit. Sure, all the books are for my classroom but I was seriously giddy as I left... good books will do that for you. I prefer Powells over B&N. powells seems more spacious and thoughtfully layed out. The store has a great selection of books and interesting non-book merchandise as well such as portland mugs and tshirts and dr. Who stuff (i heard this is popular in oregon). This location has a smaller selection than their burnside spot, but more than enough for most people. And parking is free and abundant. read more

This is the second location. I loved this one back in the day. I love coming here and going to the vintage videogames/toy store in this mall. But since the Pandamic the mall has died. Powells is still great to shop at. This one's not as big as its ho.e store but still fun to go through. I spent 2 hours in here and spent maybe 100 bucks. Well worth it. read more

I actually prefer this location over the downtown location. Far less people, but still the same stuff for the most part. Better parking, nice shopping center. The staff seems to be nicer here. I can get lost looking at the doo-dads they offer here. My boyfriend thinks I'm crazy, because it's mainly a bookstore, but they have so many other awesome things. read more

This Powell's Books is a much more convenient location than the one in Downtown Portland. Parking alone can make it worth while to check out this location. It is also HUGE. Very nice to have a huge bookstore, with an amazing variety of used books, in all sorts of different conditions. In this case, size does matter. Because of its huge draw and being known as a "Used Book Store," you have a wide selection of titles to browse through. I daresay, there is a larger selection here than there ever was at the Borders in Salem, which only sold new items. I have browsed through here a number of times. Unfortunately, I always spend far too much. Every few spaces I see another book that I absolutely -must- read. Or read again. Or give to someone to read. Or just gaze at the cover art lovingly. Regardless, they also buy used books. Duh. But beware...you can't just walk in with a cart load of books and sell all of them, even for a buck or a quarter. Very quick attendants flip through your stacks and discard tons that are in too bad of a condition, that they have too many of, or just aren't interested in. So don't expect to haul your trash here....they want quality books they can resell. Definitely worth going to. read more
