We stopped by here for a quick snack while on the way home from Gainesville for the day. My wife and I have always loved Powell's Dairy Freeze! Love their milkshakes and all their food items! It has the 50's drive-in feel vibe going on. You park and they walk up to your car and take your order. Or you can get out and walk up to the window. Back in the early 1990's when I was working as a truck driver out of Jacksonville a few times a month I would stop by Powell's for lunch when traveling through Starke. Today we ordered a milkshake. I ordered the Cookies & Cream Milkshake and it was delicious!!!! The waitress was very friendly. It took maybe 5 minutes to get our 4 milkshakes for all of us. * Definitely recommend you stop by Powell's for lunch/dinner/snacks while traveling through the Starke area. read more

It is truly such a disappointment when I spend years raving about an establishment to scores of other foodies just to find out that when I return after a couple years, things have gone completely and utterly downhill. As a high-performing young person in the food industry and retail industry in the past, I usually give young people the benefit of the doubt working in a setting like this one. However, this most recent experience was an absolute sh*tshow from beginning to end. It cannot possibly be that difficult to take an order from the counter or the calculate the price of 3 items. Somehow these team members made it look like it was more difficult than rocket science, and did so at the slowest rate of any burger joint I've ever seen in my entire life. From not being greeted once, to taking 10 minutes to even get to pay, to absolutely no apology for how long it took or even a "thank you" or "have a nice night." I can count on one hand the times I've ever left an establishment without leaving a 20% tip but I've never seen a more deserving group of people to do it to. As for the food - who would've guessed that bagging corn nuggets before getting the burger it took 10 minutes to make would result in a barely warm bag of corn nuggets? More mysterious, however, was how in the world the burger wasn't hot after all that time cooking. Do yourself a favor and walk away if it takes you 3 minutes of standing directly in front of the team members who are at the counter with no greeting. Don't give them the benefit of the doubt, no matter how much you once loved it. I'm grateful for the experience to teach me to stop vouching for small town stops if I haven't been there myself recently. Here's to hoping no one I recommended this place to recently has gone, or that they had a better experience than I did! read more

We took our time coming home from Hawthorne and stopped in Starke for some ice cream- John's request (he loves ice cream!). We pulled in right up front and were assessing the huge menu board when we were greeted by our server- car service! John and I both weren't expecting that- but we ordered promptly, I saw a small split and was intrigued! I love banana splits, but it's always too much! It was the perfect amount! Pretty disappointed the last couple visits. overall my family has always loved it here. Anytime we're in Starke we always make a trip to Powell's. The last time I got a burger I asked for ketchup on my cheeseburger and was given a tomato instead. other burgers were messed up similarly. Oh well maybe it was an off day. Went back today. Wasn't helped. Finally I had to get out of my car to only find out they were crash only at the moment. The opposite side of the building (not facing the road) had several signs....the side facing the road didn't. So not only did we have to wait to not be served we had no clue they were cash only during that time. Kinda a bummer. Hope the next time they've figured some things out. read more

We stopped here on a road trip and the young woman working here was wearing a camp top so I like her immediately. She is the kind of lady you want to work for you - what a sweetheart. Everything here is greasy. It is shakes, sodas, and fried stuff. The only menu is the thing in the window that people took pics of. Basically, it's the same food but maybe prices went up if the pic of the menu is a few years old. They will combine flavors on the shakes. My kids wanted banana and chocolate chip, and they got to get both in the same cup. The food was so greasy. I cannot emphasize this enough. Any sandwich or burger is going to have whatever meat is in the middle be dripping grease. The sandwiches do have good veg in them. It's thick pieces of tomato and lots of onions and all the fixings are fresh. The sandwiches are kind of expensive, but you get all the toppings and vegetables, so it's more than what you would get for the same price at fast food. Most fast food would charge you extra to get more veg to get up to the amount. Oddly enough, I got the shrimp box and the shrimp was not super greasy. It's popcorn breaded and fried, but not super greasy. There are a bunch of flavors of shakes. My kids wanted banana and chocolate chip. They got to get one shake of both flavors. I don't know Powell's did half and half and blended or instead they put all of both the mixes for the banana in and the chips in, which is what it seems like because there was plenty of banana and of chocolate. Anyway, there are a bunch of flavors and you can combine them. Seating is four outdoor picnic tables that are under a carport thing. It is like a Sonic, but smaller. If you are looking to step back in time to when things were simpler then Powell's Dairy Freeze will take you there. A throwback to a simpler time when eating out was a treat and not the norm. What I love about Powell's is that you can either eat in your car or sit outside and enjoy the day with your family. This place reminds me so much of growing up. The waitresses may not wear roller skates but the curbside service is great. Whether you are looking for a great burger off the grill or a sweet treat Powell's has you covered. The food is fresh and hot and the service is wonderful. Plus the prices are FANTASTIC!!! My suggestion is to get a burger all the way with fries and a milkshake it will take you back to childhood. The steak sandwich is good roadside food. I would describe it as chicken fried hamburger on a long bun with onions and such. You can get the bun grilled.. The soft serve cones are the bomb diggity and only $1.90 for a large. Twist it up. And step up with chocolate dippage. Or get your sundae all-the-way. I thought Kathy was coming on to me, but it turns out that just means with everything.. Picnic tables along 301. Or jam out in your Civic. Don't forget to bring your own hot sauce. Terrible. Again. Takes forever to get your order. Undercooked fries. Cold chili dog. Bun was cold, dog wasn't warm, chili wasn't warm. Onions were cut way too big. They know longer even post their prices on their "menu" board. And what makes matters even worse is the fact that a chili dog and small fries is seven dollars; $6.85 to be exact. I took it back to them and got a refund. Girl gave me the cost of the food but SHE KEPT HER TIP. Also, it's dirty. Very dirty. I will never go back. Stay away from this place. read more

Asked about the food, gal said they go through 40-60 Footlong Steak Sandwiches a day and people love those. Great prices Friendly folks They have curbside service - meaning they will come to your car to take your order! And PLEASE tip the folks! This place starts out good but has gotten a lot more disappointing, Recent changed type of fries, I love there olde ones, Items out of onion rings, lettuce and ketchup, how do you run out of ketchup at a fast food place, the service only 4 customers and still takes 30 min to get order, little blonde there not to friendly, ask for a ranch since out of ketchup and say you get 1 free and have to pay for extras, NP but when we do eventually get them they are only half full, they forget chili on my chili dog last visit, left out a large fry this time, fried steak sandwich and double cheeseburger two fries and drinks $30, There peanut butter shakes are great though read more

Powell's is a great place for dessert if you want ice cream. Aside from that, I would look elsewhere. The food is decent at best. It's typical fast food. It may be better than BK or Mcdonald's but that's not saying much. I still go here to support local business but that's mainly it. They're food is great- and I love our small local businesses- but I've been coming here since I was a toddler and have never experienced the rudeness that I received today... The sophomore (noticed the "Class of 2025" shirt) with a ton of piercings in her ears should maybe learn some people skills. We were visiting friends in Starke and stopped by this roadside ice cream place. I have stopped by there a number of times through the years. My friends had never been there before. We all ordered an ice cream cone. They serve food as well. We ordered some corn nuggets. The ice cream was OK. Not as good as some I've had but the corn nuggets were good. You sit outside on picnic tables. No inside seating. The bathrooms, which were on the outside, weren't too clean. My young companion refused to use the facilities. Finally stopped into the home of the "foot long steak" (the sign has weirded me out in the past), and I have to say I'm now prepared for my second trip. There aren't really any parking lines painted and there aren't any menus other than the ones posted on the building, so although a waitress comes straight to your car, if you've never been before you might as well get out and walk to the window. The shake menu had about ten flavors, I went with chocolate. Then there is the food menu - burgers, dogs, corn nuggets, okra, fries, grilled cheese... you get the idea. I got a burger all the way (lettuce/tomato/pickles/mayo) and was very content. They do have a few picnic benches under a covered wing, so you don't have to eat in your car. Really nice staff (I don't know if they take credit cards - the people in front of me were all fishing for change) and like the others have said the milkshakes are DELISH. I've been here a few times now... enough to know that if you live in Starke.. you know what this place is. If you don't.. well, it's a throw-back to those old times of a drive-in joint. I still love Powell's. It holds a special place in my heart since my parents used to come here when they were dating and I've been coming here since I was a child. It looks exactly the same which is part of the charm. Old school! I took my now husband there when we were dating and he is hooked as well. They have the best soft serve ice cream I have ever had. The chocolate is my favorite. However, I still go back to my dad's favorite, the Pineapple Sprite Milkshake time and time again. YES It is the best. Hands down. And you cannot beat the prices. Cute little drive up ice cream shop. The ice cream is soft serve and very reasonably priced for our 4 kids!! They will dip it in chocolate or sprinkles which they loved. Mom and I got shakes...
