I stopped in on my way to the Black Hills. My cousins had told me that the winery was closing at end of the year. And, yes that is true. What a beautiful winery and gift store. I bought a lot of bottles to give as gifts to all my cousins who live in SD. I love the Plum Wine! So delicious. I also bought some bags of their local coffee beans for my cousins. I love giving gifts! Of course I couldn't take all my purchases on the plane, lol. Customer service is super helpful and nice! Highly recommend pulling off and stopping at the Winery & the sister property Minor Brewery next door! The food was fantastic, you can order the same menu at either place, the winery was BUSY but food came out quicker than quoted! It was difficult to find a table inside, it was raining so alllllll the tables outside weren't being used, so as long as it's nice outside there's plenty of seating! There are free wine tastings for up to 5 wines, and you can purchase the bottles of wine & their customized gear! Everyone was so friendly. They have a great large layout inside to check out everything and not feel crowded. Plenty of parking in their lots out front! They also have a small general store next door for any needs! read more

This is a super unique place for eats and drinks, great atmosphere, location, and options. Everyone in here was super friendly and helpful which was great because I walked in not knowing what the place was about, their billboards were just super intriguing. We decided to get some food before sampling their wines and after a kind of long wait, the sandwiches were amazing. They used their own strawberry rhubarb jam which would have convinced me to buy a jar if I wasn't flying the next day. The salad was also great but the kids pizza was just good. We then went on to try the wines, 5 free samples out of an extensive list of options. I opted for the less traditional flavors like pumpkin and rhubarb which definitely didn't make my list of favorites but still happy I got to try them. Stopped in for a free wine tasting with family while visiting Hill City. They are know for their snarky named "Red Ass" wines (rhubarb and berry wines) but have a good assortment to try out. We tried both the raspberry and strawberry wines with rhubarb and they were pretty good. Both wines had a great rhubarb bite that really shined threw the flavor profile. Staff were fun and friendly and enjoyed teaching us about their wines. The wine tasting was fun and there was no hard sell to buy anything afterwards. It basically boils down to their confidence that you will want a little more to enjoy after your tasting, and it works! After finding a few favs we bought a couple bottles and glasses and enjoyed the afternoon on their patio. A great way to end our visit in town. read more

The building and ground are very nice with beautiful views of the nearby black hills. They have a nice retail area whwrebyou can purchase tee shirts, wine glasses and wine themed memorabilia. They also have several tasting bars with ample room and plenty of serves so we had no wait. I liked that they let you try 5 wines for free. There are many signs and ads for Prairie Berry Winery in South Dakota. This popular regional winery has mostly fruit wines with a few grape styles. It's hard to grow traditional wine grapes here, but they use local fruits for a different experience. Parking is abundant but split on two levels. The winery has a nice look and feel with a large open interior perfect for year round visits. The interior has a tasting bar where you can sample five wines. I chose the fruit wines which run from dry to sweet. The taste is subjective but do not expect a classic French or Italian style. They use mostly berries and rhubarb to create other styles. Overall the fruit wines are nice. It is a nice way to showcase the local options. However the prices are similar to nationally available wines which may be more friendly. Those used to traditional wines may be surprised but that could be a good thing. This is a fun stop for older tourists visiting the Black Hills. You can taste and buy the various wines and have a nice night at your hotel. It's good to taste first since the wines here are different. However the great staff and location make any stop nice. read more

We stopped at the winery for lunch and some wine tasting. I had the roast turkey sandwich on pumpernickel bread. It was best sandwich I've ever had. I paired it with. A glass of their Red Ass wine, it was very good! The wine tasting was fun and I found several I liked well enough to take home. All the wait staff were very polite and personable. I mean who doesn't love wine?! I was so excited to try the Black Hills of South Dakota Red Ass Rhubarb wine apparently a favorite. They offer free wine tastings (5) per person. Red Ass was good but my favorites were: -Gold Digger: (white) -Lawrence Elk: (red) -Pheasant Reserve: (red) Raspberry Honeywine: (red) The people were very nice and welcoming you can also order a wine flight if you'd like. They have a kitchen and I ordered some delicious charcuterie that complemented well with our wines. Portions size for charcuterie serves 4-6 so keep that in mind! Wines ship all over the U.S. in case you want to take case of 12 which I saw plenty of people doing. I only bought 3 bottles but I'll definitely order some soon. You definitely have to make a pit stop here if you're in the Dakota's. Miners brewery is next door so that was also a plus! read more

I had a good time at Prairie Berry Winery. I had good wine at Prairie Berry winery. I didn't have terrific wine at Prairie Berry, but I wasn't expecting it, so it's ok. First, parking is very easy and convenient. When you walk in, the space is really, absolutely beautiful. We signed up for a tasting and wandered the place a bit before our time came up. Gorgeous merchandise and very well laid out. There's a food stand in the back with cheese and charcuterie and such, but we didn't partake of those. Once our time came, we had a wonderful time tasting wines. Most of them were way too sweet for me, but we did find a few we liked and we also found a few we knew would make great gifts for folks back home. Getting wine shipped was super easy, and these folks know what they are doing, she knew which counties in Florida wouldn't allow it. Dang, that's specific and impressive. Overall, a good time, worth a visit. Is it the best wine you've ever had? Not if you're a wino like me. But is it fun and interesting and worth supporting a small business? 100% ! read more

Great FRUIT winery. If you are used to California wines, please not the different region you are in and what can grow here. They are great at making fruit wines but these are SWEET! However, you are given 5 complimentary tastings which is amazing as many are not used to this wine making process and this gives you the opportunity to try them. I am a traditional wine girl but believe there is a space for Praire Berry wines. A spritz with the Gold Digger or Red Ass wine was perfectly refreshing and not too sweet for me. Our amazing server, Lucy, gave us a sample of the mulled wine that was made with the Pumpkin Orange wine and it was super tasty, I bought a bottle! Overall, nice relaxing vibes and friendly service. The complimentary tastings make it an enticing visit and if you are passing through I highly recommend a stop- you may love it! Weave reservations for wine tasting on a Friday afternoon since that's their policy during COVID-19 and we were able to immediately start tasting when we got there. Our server was so sweet and we loved every recommendation she made. After our tasting, which consisted of five wines each, we ordered two glasses and the Artisan Cheese Board and grabbed a seat on the patio. We loved the fruitiness of the wines we chose and the Rosy Ass Rhubarb was my favorite. The cheese board was awesome -- we loved the each of the three cheeses and the fruit jam that came with it. I was really pleasantly surprised by Prairie Berry Winery! After seeing all of the billboards for it around the area, I didn't really think it would be that impressive but I was proven wrong! Currently because of COVID, they are requiring reservations for wine tastings which is where you get five tastings for free, but we were able to get a walk-in tasting within five minutes of arriving. It seemed like we just lucked out though so I wouldn't count on getting a reservation by walking in! If you can, schedule one in advance! Our tasting was great and we learned a lot about it the history of the winery. Most of the wines were fruit wines which is super interesting and definitely one of the things that makes this winery unique! I actually loved almost every single wine we tasted. They have a little cafe where you can grab some snacks to eat outside on the patio while enjoying a glass or bottle of wine which I highly recommend! I'm not sure I'll ever find myself in South Dakota again, but if I do I'll definitely make another visit to Prairie Berry! And I will most certainly recommend anybody passing through the area to stop here as well! read more

This place is beautiful in a picturesque setting. The winery is HUGE. Tons of space to walk around and explore. I was a little disappointed that none of the giant billboards advertise that you must have a reservation for a tasting. Once you arrive and park, then you see the signs that tell you reservations are required for tastings. So when the next tasting wasn't for another hour and 45 minutes, I was a bit upset. I have been to hundreds of wineries in the country and have never encountered one that required reservations, so I was annoyed and I'm not sure why they have this policy. They do offer a flight of 3 wines for $7 so, I felt like this was an ok alternative. I didn't get to taste 5 for free but I got to try a few. The server was really nice and answered all of my questions about the wines. The food is very on par with a nice winery and the outside sitting area is beautiful, with vines decorating the view. The wines I tried were ok. (See picture) I wasn't super impressed with any of them, but perhaps if I do a tasting I'll find something I like. read more

My husband and I had a lot of fun at this winery. Our sommelier was Chad and he was great. The winery offers 5 tastings for free. My husband and I each chose different wines so we could try more than five. We prefer sweet wines and they have quite a few. We ended up getting a Rosy Ass, a Gold Digger and two Catawbas. One of the Catawbas we plan on turning into a slush using the slush mix that we purchased. We knew that we wanted to buy the slush mix after some guy came around offering tastings of a slush made with Catawba......it was SO good! If you are trying to avoid too much sugar they do have 4 wines that are lightened up and have no added sugar. I tried one, but it was two lite for me. This is a great place to check out.......everyone was just so darn friendly and fun! read more

After touring around the area all day, this is a perfect stop for a break. Miner Brewing Co. and Prairie Berry Winery are two in one stop. The beer and wine are very tasty. It is fun that you can walk between the two locations. The ambiance in both locations was great. One caveat, we ordered food from the food truck at the brewery. This time last year, I was on my honeymoon sans my husband (military training). One of my best friends drove up to Custer with me for a few days and we stopped here for a beverage. We love the "open campus" idea between here and the brewery. It's a beautiful location and we lucked out with great weather. Staff is friendly and helpful, and we ended up taking home four bottles.
