Praxis is an artist collective & community space located in the heart of the Mission. Everything in the shop is handmade locally. The space is both a working studio & store front. Such a beautiful shop. I love the work that is put into this place, it's very real, earthy, and very unique. There are many different varieties that can pretty much match any style one might have. The customer service was great, Erin can pretty much sew anything it seems like. She does her homework.lol. I found a beautiful yellow dress that flowed for days. At first I thought I couldn't spend the money, and I thanked her for allowing me to look around. I walked out. I just couldn't get that beautiful, rich yellow flowing fabric out of my mind. I turned around after several blocks, heading back to this quaint little corner shop. I was pretty much running back, thinking to myself someone else is going to get there hands on that beautiful piece. I came in and I told her, I have to try it on. I put this dress on, added my own belt to the waist and I felt like this dress was meant for me, it fit like a glove. She even took a photo of me in the dress, maybe you can see it if she links it to this review some how. Despite just celebrating it's 10 year anniversary, this shop truly feels like a hold-over from an older, more relaxed part of San Francisco, located in the deep heart of the Mission District. The owner, Mary, makes what she pleases for the front of the shop - currently on offer are new swim suits and flowly, psychedelic jumpsuits perfect for rollerskating down at Ocean Beach or in Golden Gate Park. If you need something tailored or custom made she can do this too, and there just isn't anyone better. Each piece will fit you well once she gets her hands on it, as she has such a good understanding of how fabric should flow and specifically how to put something technical together. The shop is also a community hub, adding to the vibrancy of the 24th St. corridor. Hard to imagine SF without this gem of a shop! read more

Praxis is a treasure of a store/space. Among the soulless boutiques that The Mission has filled up with in the recent few years, Praxis is a bright sunny spot full of so much soul, you will dream about it for days after your first visit. Everytime I can't help but buy something. Everything that is sold here is magical, hand made, completely unique and of lovely quality. Lacy undies and beautiful flowing dresses (and mini ones) and sparkly bikinis and soft skirts. I am not even girly, and I love the stuff Aerin and her team of talented seamstresses make. And for now, it is all very very generously priced. I think there are also sewing workshops and craft nights and I am absolutely going to make it to one of those soon too. I love this place! I've gotten a couple of pieces of handmade clothes and also got some help putting in a zipper. All of the clothes are made in the back of the little shop, and a lot of them are made from recycled/salvaged materials. So, you can feel extra good about getting clothes here. Plus, the designs are super simple and wearable and the fabrics are beautiful--lots of great patterns, laces and textures. AND, when you thought it couldn't get any better, all the clothes are very reasonably priced (especially considering that they're made right there) AND if you're really in a bind, they'll consider a sliding scale. Plus, on Dia de los Muertos, they were doing make-up, and a super sweet girl painted some flowers around my eyes and made my day. I also needed some help putting some zippers into a jacket last weekend, and they were all very helpful, but didn't do it for me--which made me very happy! They basically just got me started and then showed me how to use the zipper foot and then let me do it myself, which is exactly what I needed. This wonderful GEM of a place opened right around the time I left the area to move to Oakland. Recently I was on the street and was tearfully reminded of how special it is, while learning that Viracocha was closing, as well as the Dark Room, after many other longtime artsy and community-oriented places had shuttered. The tenets of the store and its practices come through in its vibe, but for the densest of folks there are also missives posted on the walls that basically mean: live low on the hog, reduce (and reduce and reduce but if not then reuse and recycle), care for the earth and your fellow people, and be nice to yourself and others. And spread the good word. There are all kinds of unique garments here repurposed and upcycled from others, and sizes vary and alterations are possible. I always find at least one thing I want on every visit. In addition to clothing you'll find a nice assortment of vitamins, supplements, ointments, and other super-curated "hippie drugstore" items. The people working here and running the place are crazy-nice and offer none of that holier-than-thou hipster 'tude, even when faced with the [?]-than-thou hipster 'tude in front of them. Nice work, ladies! Honestly, I think EVERY RETAIL STORE IN THE WHOLE WORLD should operate and run like Praxis. The world would be a seriously better place. The folks at Praxis can do anything and they are really nice about my DIFM approach; they have made me a lovely custom shopping bag as well as complicated double layer blackout curtains for a curved ceiling track. I love this shop, and every time I go in, I leave feeling a little lighter and better about the world we live in. So many shops try to imitate what Praxis does with sincerity. I've gotten things for myself here, several times when I've needed a random household product and didn't want to have to trek far out of my neighborhood to get it, or purchase it from a big chain. I've also found some really nice gifts for friends here, made all the more special by knowing it comes from such a wholesome source. Praxis is a shining bastion of ethical commerce in a the morass of inhumanity that is the retail industry. Plus, the clothes are well made, super cute, and affordable. I love that they stock a variety of items that based directly on the requests of the people who come in to the store. This is my first Yelp review. After finding Praxis through Yelp it's the least I can do. The owner ( Erin? I'm sorry I'm terrible w names) graciously and kindly walked me thru my first sowing project. I made a curtain for my bathroom and had never used a sowing machine. I brought the cloth but borrowed everything I needed, and despite several clumsy screw ups on my part the project came out great. Praxis is an incredible community driven space. Bulk items! Crafting! Painting! Knitting! Sewing! Community connections! Praxis is a lot of things. Its small and always changing, and open to community input. Its focus seems to be: the less we have to ruin our environment and ourselves= the better. DIY, reuse old bottles, learn to sew, buy in bulk, pretend to care, etc. Its a community space for sharing DIY ideas, projects and selling some bulk items and local crafts. Its all here, it just depends on when you're there and what you contribute. Need a painting lesson/ tip/ buddy? There's an artist always there! Want to share your craft or teach a lesson? Do it! Need a sewing lesson? There's people that want to teach/ share their resources. Same with knitting and gardening and any other idea you may have, there's people to talk it through with. The other day I bought 3 dresses made in the shop, some bulk items and some locally made beauty/health products that smell awesome. Its a fun place that looks very different everyday, and even if you don't craft DIY, it is worth checking out their products from time to time. Their clothes / accessories locally crafted from (usually) upcycled scrap material are just getting better and better! My $20 handmade dress was quite the sexy steal. read more

Do you need to sew and don't have a sewing machine, come here and do it yourself or ask for help Regina or Aerin, two absolutely wonderful ladies who are living their dream. I wish I could give this zero stars bc we have tried multiple times to come here and they have said they close at 7 and both times we have come they have been closed. If you want to close earlier than 7 that is completely fine but do not say you will be open until a certain time if you are not. We've wasted a lot of time trying to come to this place and I will never suggest it to anyone in the area read more

Praxis is an all around cooperative community suitable for anyone. When you walk in you are greeted like you have known them forever. I enjoy the workshops and classes they offer, which are donation based and very easy to understand. They do everything from artistic crafts to sewing, gardening and organic foods, to cleansing the body and soul. They have an eclectic array of awesome sustainable gifts, I love the things handmade by Praxans.
